Getting behind the wheel confidently Dear Annie: I have three grandchildren, and they’re all approaching the age where they’ll be learning how to drive. Our adult children are now 48, 44 and 41. Some years ago, when they were learning how to drive, I came across John Violette’s “Contract for Drivers,” clipped it, and stowed it away. Unfortunately, it’s very yellowed and illegible now. Would you be able to print it? — Tutu from Hawaii Dear Tutu: I am glad to print these wise words and implore teen drivers — and all drivers, really — to remember that they are operating a literal ton of steel, often at incredible speeds, and life can change in an instant. Be safe. “Contract for Drivers” By John Violette It is understood and agreed that having a driver’s license and driving a car are privileges. Any privilege has to be earned, and it must be earned on a continuing basis. This means that driving privileges may be revoked due to an infraction of the following rules: 1. Breaking the driving laws or abusing a motor vehicle can result in the loss of driving privileges, even if

we learn about it from a source other than the police. You never know who may be observing you. 2. You will strive to maintain the grades, conduct and attitude at the same high level as when we first granted your driving privileges. 3. No one else should be allowed to drive a vehicle entrusted to you. This means you may not lend your vehicle to friends. 4. If you are ever in a condition that might render you less than 100% competent behind the wheel of a car, phone us. We will come get you. This will not result in the loss of your driving privileges. 5. You are never to be a passenger in a car in which the driver should not be driving. A call to come get you will not result in the loss of driving privileges. If you cannot reach us, call a taxi. We will pay for it, and there will be no punishment. Signed this ______ day of ____________, 20_ _ . Dad: ______________ Mom: _____________ Newly Licensed Driver: ___________________ Dear Annie: Tell “Mortified” that I, too, have those embarrassing pop-up memories. I think we all reflect more on our past and wish we could change

some of those actions. Most of the time, the memories are of very minor incidences that for some reason or another are stuck in our minds. I know I’m a good person with no criminal past and I’m kind and thoughtful. I know my husband and I have raised our children right because we’re so proud of them and their accomplishments. Friends, family and even patrons from their business tell us what wonderful young men we have raised. So when I have these memories, I try to remind myself of all this. The other trick I use is to try to remember the occasion. What were the reactions of others? I also try to recall ANY occasions when someone else did something embarrassing. I can’t recall any. We are so focused on ourselves that we hardly notice other’s actions unless it’s something serious. Thanks to “Mortified” for letting me know I’m not alone. — Mortified, Too Dear Mortified, Too: It’s quite amazing: Now that you mention it, not a single thing comes to my mind when I try to think of something embarrassing that someone I know has done. Isn’t that telling? Thanks for the revelation.

Dear Annie: With this pandemic and people out of work, this might be a good way to get a few people back to work AND to save a ton of money. Both small and large businesses need to purge their mailing lists. I get mail from places I may have sent for a catalog years ago but haven’t done business with them for many years. I have even cut off mailing labels and returned them at my expense to companies asking to be removed from their mailing list, but I continue to receive their mailings. And yes, I am registered with www. catalogchoice.org and https://www.dmachoice.org. Think of all the trees that are killed. Think of all the extra trash in the landfills. Purging the list could be as simple as reviewing their records and deleting all addresses of people who have not done business

with them in some number of years. Or, perhaps send a postcard asking if the person wants to continue receiving the mailing. If so, they call the company. If they do not hear from the customer after a period of time, then they should delete the name. Let’s stop the waste. Purge! — Carol Dear Carol: This is a smart idea. And it would be fantastic if your plea reached the eyes and changed the minds of the bigwigs in a position to do something about this from the top on down. As it is, your letter includes two great tips — Catalog Choice and DMAChoice. One more resource to add to that list is Opt Out, which prevents companies from sending you unsolicited credit card and insurance offers. To use this handy service, visit www. optoutprescreen.com or call 1-888-567-8688. The company notes that deaf and hard of hearing consumers can opt-out by calling 7-1-1 and referring the relay operator to 1-800821-9631. Dear Annie: When I read the letter from “My Mom’s Death Is Causing My Friend Grief,” I just had to write. I experienced a similar incident with my brother’s mother-in-law, “Carol.” My father died several years

ago, and after the funeral, Carol took me aside to ask for my thoughts on why her youngest daughter was angry with her. I was an emotional wreck that day, having just buried my father, so I didn’t have the wherewithal to walk away. So, I endured Carol’s lamentations for well over an hour in total disbelief. I told my therapist about this incident a few days later, and he said it sounded as though Carol suffered from a classic case of narcissistic personality disorder. NPD is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance. They are usually oblivious to the feelings, wishes and needs of other people. When I heard this, it was as if a lightbulb went off in my head: It explained so much about Carol’s behavior throughout the years! I have found that knowing (or suspecting) that someone who has hurt you may have NPD can help lessen the negative impacts of their behavior. — Dale Dear Dale: Thank you for this insightful letter. Knowledge really is power, and I agree that sometimes simply having such a context for someone’s behavior can help you to not take it personally. I am so sorry for the loss of your father.
