Yummy Dumplings
Make no mistake, this humble Cameron Park hole-in-the-wall is a hidden treasure. Yummy Dumplings more than lives up to its name, offering traditional, handmade Chinese dumplings, pot stickers and more.
3950 Cambridge Road, Suite 6, Cameron Park (530) 387-7551
Childhood friends from Canton, China, co-owners Ivy Mai and Trista Chen began bringing authentic Chinese fare to the community in 2019 and has built a loyal following. Nini Lin, Mai’s mother, originally brought her dumplings to Davis years ago.
“Nini wanted to bring the dumpling culture here to let people know more about Chinese food,” explained Mai. “Dumplings are traditional Chinese food and that’s why we always make them by hand and not with a machine.”
Savory and plump, the dumplings are satisfyingly succulent and come in a variety of flavors. Mai’s favorites are the pork and chive pot stickers and the shrimp and chicken pot stickers while Chen gravitates to the kimchi pork pot stickers. Made
by Mai daily with fresh vegetables, the little bundles of delight are served with an aromatic homemade sauce that is a family secret.
“Best dumplings in Cali,” wrote one Google reviewer. “I lived seven years in China and these are as authentic as it gets for USA.”
Another reviewer agreed. “Yup, for sure the best dumplings and pot stickers this side of the Sierras!”
Customers also come for the house chow mein, sesame chicken and general chicken, as well as the spicy Mongolian beef or the BBQ pork bao. The generous serving sizes will surely sate many a hungry family.
Always ready to whip up one more batch of dumplings, Mai and Chen are gratified by the response from the community. “The people here are so friendly; that’s for sure,” shared Mai. “We just always try our best — the best service and the best quality.”

Flavorful Grape Recipes
to Take Summer Gatherings to the Next Level
FAMILY FEATURES
Summertime celebrations with friends, family and neighbors are a perfect way to enjoy the sunshine, warm weather and camaraderie. To satisfy a hungry crowd, though, you’ll need recipes fit for the occasion.
Turn to a versatile signature ingredient like Grapes from California, which can be used in dishes of all kinds from refreshing salads and entrees to flavorful condiments and sweet desserts. Grapes are crisp, juicy and sweet, making them a fantastic addition of flavor and texture for a wide range of recipes. Whether fresh, sauteed, roasted, grilled or even pickled, grapes make it easy to take meals to the next level.
For example, you can start the festivities with grapes as an easy, portable and healthy snack perfect for summer days or use them as a juicy addition to this all-in-one Honey-Lime Quinoa and Grape Salad that’s ideal as a light appetizer or a meal all on its own. Follow it up (or pair it) with a summertime staple – hot dogs – given a sweet-tart twist from pickled grape relish that takes these Sweet and Tangy Pickled Grape Hot Dogs to new heights.
Dessert can’t be much easier than Creamy Vegan Grape Ice Cream as a dairy-free alternative to traditional summer sweets. Oat coffee creamer and pureed grapes are all you need to create this delicious frozen treat. Simply freezing whole grapes also makes for an easy and healthy frozen dessert.
Visit GrapesFromCalifornia.com to discover more summer entertaining inspiration.

California Outdoors Q&A
Interstate 80 bats
Q: Why do bats live under the I-80 Yolo Causeway near Davis instead of a more natural setting?
A: It is pretty amazing that around 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats choose the Yolo Causeway as their home. There are several reasons why they do so, says Yolo Basin Foundation Program Coordinator Corky Quirk. First, Mexican free-tailed bats like heat and temperatures under the Yolo Causeway are warm and stable. The asphalt and causeway deck provide additional warmth. Second, the bats can keep relatively safe from predators by nestling in the causeway’s expansion joints and crevices. However, the causeway isn’t totally protected. Predators sometimes hang out under the causeway to prey on fallen bats, especially during birthing and juveniles’ first flights. Peregrine falcons may also show up to hunt bats in the air. Third, bats choose the Yolo Causeway as their home because of its proximity to food. There are foraging opportunities nearby and the adjacent wetlands and rice fields are a good source for insects. The causeway is also just a short bat flight away from farm fields and orchards in Yolo and Sacramento counties.
Habitat loss may also be a factor as urbanization has reduced natural roosting locations such as hollow trees. In fact, the Yolo Causeway may have attracted bats from other areas by providing a safe, warm roosting place. For more information on the Yolo Causeway bats visit the Yolo Basin Foundation’s website.
Crab casting
Q: Can I crab using a rod and reel with a trap attached to my line?
A: No. This style of trap, commonly known as a crabhawk or crabjaw trap, is sold in many places and our wildlife
officers have encountered anglers using them. However, they are not legal in California because they are not listed as a method of take for saltwater crustaceans. California Code of Regulations, Title 14, section 29.80 lists approved methods of take for crabs which include taking by hand, crab loop traps (snares), hoop nets and traps.
Airbow hunting
Q: Can I hunt in California using an air gun that shoots arrows via pressure?
A: No. The device you’re referring to is often called an airbow, which is essentially an air gun that shoots arrows. An airbow is not considered a firearm and does not fall under the definition of a bow or crossbow outlined in California Code of Regulations (CCR), Title 14, section 354. Game mammals and birds may only be taken in California by methods listed in CCR, Title 14, sections 311, 507 and 353. Because an airbow does not fall under any of these sections, it may not be used to take game animals in California.
Lobster claws
Q: Is it true that California lobsters don’t have claws?
A: Yes, it’s true. The California spiny lobster is a species of lobster that does not have claws. In fact, there are far fewer clawed lobsters than spiny lobsters, says CDFW Environmental Scientist Jenny Hofmeister. Out of all the lobster fisheries in the world, there are only a few that target clawed lobsters. Most lobsters are spiny like the species that live in California. However, as the name suggests, California spiny lobsters are covered in spines. This feature presents its own unique challenge for scientists who work with the species. Scientists don’t have to worry about claws when handling lobsters for conservation purposes, but they do have to watch out for their spines!
California’s spiny lobsters are a rocky reef kelp forest species found mostly off the coast of Southern California in shallow waters to a depth of about 300 feet. For more information watch CDFW’s Introduction to Lobstering video or visit the department’s recreational lobster fishing web page.

8 TIPS TO CARE FOR YOUR HORSE
Summer can be fun, but it also presents many challenges for horses and their owners. Although we’re approaching Fall, there are many hot days still to come. High temperatures and humidity can take a physical toll on horses as their large muscle mass and comparatively small body surface area makes it difficult for them to cool themselves. Coupled with the potential of drought affecting water and feed supplies for horses, summer can be downright hard without the right information and preparation. Here are some tips to help you and your horse through those challenges of the season.
1. Stock up on feed and store well — store under cover to ensure it’s not affected by the weather. Keep high-fiber pellets to supplement the diet if needed.
2. Check for signs of heatstroke — profuse sweating or no longer sweating; high respiration rate; dry, hot skin that won’t return when pinched; high rectal temp; and, lethargy or distress.
3. Ensure continuous access to fresh water
4. Provide plenty of shade opportunities
5. Ride only during the cooler times of the day
6. Care for your horse after the ride — hose them down and provide a salt block to replenish electrolytes.
7. Provide fly protection — sprays, fly catchers, and masks. Remove manure regularly to avoid fly attraction.
8. Use only light fly sheets to cover your horse
