Class is in session ... sort of n Local school districts announce their modified back-to-school plans Jana Rossi & Dylan Svoboda Staff writers Almost since that fateful day in March when schools were abruptly shutdown due to COVID-19, teachers, students, parents and school officials have been in a holding pattern. Last week the Rescue Union School District and the Buckeye Union School District announced their plans for the 2020-21 school year — though officials acknowledge these plans could change at any moment. The RUSD Board of Trustees last month, after much debate, settled on a hybrid model with students alternating between the classroom and virtual learning. RUSD students will be split into morning and afternoon shifts to allow for social-distancing
requirements. Parents will have the option of enrolling their students in the hybrid system or going Mtn.Demo-Vill Life_Post entirely virtual. Sophia Fire scorches 35 acres early Sunday El Dorado Hills & Folsom fire departments News release The Folsom Fire Department responded to a vegetation fire on Sophia Parkway, near Empire Ranch Road and East Natoma Street, at 12:55 a.m. Aug. 2. Personnel from Fire Station 39 were first to arrive and found a fast-moving grass fire heading uphill toward homes in El Dorado Hills and the Hildebrand neighborhood in Folsom. The origin of the fire was mid-slope and moving in several directions. They began extinguishing the fire and requested additional resources to contain it. More than 20 fire engines responded from Folsom, El Dorado Hills and Cal Fire to extinguish the blaze dubbed the
Sophia Fire, which burned more than 35 acres. Several chief officers were also requested to manage the separate divisions established specifically due to the access between Sophia Parkway and the homes at the top of the ridge near Beatty Drive in El Dorado Hills. Three water tenders were used to assist. Due to the incident occurring at night, air resources were not used. The fire was contained within a couple hours and no homes were damaged. Multiple tactical channels were utilized due to the quantity of resources and the different radio frequencies used during a multi-jurisdictional, multi-county incident. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still being investigated. Crews remained on scene for several hours extinguishing hot spots.

In partnership with the Serrano El Dorado Owners’ Association, the El Dorado Hills Community Services District and El Dorado County Fish and Wildlife Commission, 250 big mouth bass were recently released in the Serrano Village Pond. “The intent is to give children the opportunity to get outside. With the virus we want the children to enjoy the outdoors,” said Dennis Byrne of the Fish and Wildlife Commission. Officials stress the importance of using barbless fish hooks when fishing around the pond. A tragedy unfolded last month when an El Dorado Hills couple and their two young boys were killed in a fiery vehicle crash off Latrobe Road just beyond the Amador-El Dorado county line. Nicholas Streit, his wife Alisa and their sons, Christopher, 5, and 2-year-old Tyler did not survive the crash that occurred just after 2 p.m. Thursday, July 23; all were pronounced dead at the scene. Nicholas, the driver, reportedly was trying to cross double-yellow lines on Latrobe Road, traveling northbound, when a vehicle coming in the opposite direction caused him to veer as he tried to return to his lane, ultimately losing control. The vehicle carrying the family of four flipped several times before coming to rest in a field and catching fire, according to the California Highway Patrol. The resulting blaze spread into vegetation but was doused by firefighters after consuming just under 4 acres. Latrobe Road was closed at South Shingle Road for several hours as the investigation into the devastating incident continued. A motorist traveling behind the Streits reportedly provided details to CHP officers regarding what led to the tragedy. It was unknown what speed the Streit family vehicle was traveling at the time.
