The demeanor on the field this season is dif ferent for the Trojans, who welcome back many starters. The team doesn’t waste a single second on the practice field, whether it be senior quarterback Maddox Varella working on routes with returning receivers Sebastian Sutton, Tyler Guthmiller, John Hayward and more or in defensive drills where guys like Connor Dasmann, Dwight Martin III and Hall are giving the game everything they have, looking for any way to gain an edge. Last season Varella arrived at Oak Ridge about two months before the season began and was in a stiff quarterback battle. He earned the starting job after coming off the bench and leading the Trojans to a 28-27 comeback win over Elk Grove in the third week and never handed the keys back; fin ishing the season as the passing yards leader in El Dorado County.
The proposed roundabout at the Bridlewood Drive and Bass Lake Road intersection continues to gain traction with the recent approval of $744,400 in funding by the El Dorado County Transportation Commission.“Thatisjust barely enough for the environ mental studies and the design,” noted Director of Transportation Rafael Martinez, who pegged con struction costs at an additional $1.5 to $2 million. The project is not yet approved, although Martinez said the funds will allow the commission to consider the roundabout for inclusion into El Dorado County’s regional transportation plan as well as its capital improvement program as a forthcoming project. The recently approved capital is an allocation from Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality state funds. “This would improve quality of air because you can keep the traffic moving as opposed to everybody com ing to a stop,” District 1 Supervisor John Hidahl explained as to CMAQ applicability. Martinez assured CMAQ is only the first of several state and federal grants the department plans to pursue. “All of those are heavy into alternative modes of traf fic implementation such as roundabouts, bike lanes, pedestrian paths, sidewalks,” he said. “This would be a perfect candidate for a greenhouse gas reduction grant.”InaJuly 20 meeting with Bridlewood Drive resi dents, the roundabout was presented by the DOT as a solution for traffic calming in a location where other typical implementations are unwarranted. According to state guidelines, traffic and accident volume do not currently justify measures such as stop signs, signal ization or even left-turn pockets at that intersection, Martinez explained. “That was hard for them to hear,” he conceded, adding he was, however, encouraged by a smattering of attendees willing to entertain a roundabout. Bridlewood resident Ron Cassity complemented Martinez on his presentation to the community. “He had a lot of material to present in a short time,” Cassity said of the meeting attended by approximately 100 neighbors, both online and in-person. “He did soPhia torres

Trojans ’ varsity squad back with a vengeance Thomas Frey Staff writer As soon as the 2021 season ended, the Trojans got to work — ready to improve after a dismal 3-7 record. “Everyone knows how it felt; it sucks,” senior Jake Hall said. “I think it’s the worst record we’ve ever had in Oak Ridge history. 4. Your suggestion to “layer” the organic waste in the yard waste can is impractical. No one wants to take existing yard waste out of their already full bin to layer stinky organic waste.

2. Every other week will not work. I have already seen comments (and personal experience) on increased smell, maggots and ants. This is not healthy.3.Compostable bags/green certi ed bags are not reasonable. They cost extra, leak and tear apart, thus becoming unsanitary.
6. Keeping a kitchen container is what we did to store kitchen scraps. So that works, but not by using a bio bag that tears apart.
TEDITOR:oEl Dorado Disposal: I am aware you have already received comments about the new Organic Waste Collection System. I thought I would add mine. 1. The system was ill conceived by the California Legislature. Although they had good intentions in helping to reduce gas emissions, the present program will do little to reduce actual, measurable emissions, compared to the headache and cost on the part of the residents and the waste processor.

There have been more sobering reminders of life’s fragility of late. A woman from my former mothers’ club died this summer from cancer, even more quickly than my own mother did a er diagnosis. I hadn’t seen this old friend in person in some time, but “devoted mother” is always how I’ve thought of her. Her youngest son has yet to graduate high school and I know she would have done anything to be there to support him. Then, only three days later, a local girl, a strong soccer standout who was just weeks from starting high school, was taken a er a terrible accident. Her family felt buoyed by the outpouring of community support during what could have been the loneliest, scariest time. I hope the family continues to feel supported and seen in the months and years to come, that the feeling of being li ed up by their community never fades. As I’ve been reminded yet again, rst in hints and nally as hits that refused to be ignored, life is about community in a broad sense. It doesn’t have to be a large gathering of people or deep connections with every single person we interact with. Community is to be in communion, or connection, with another person. It could be as small as a smile, an encouraging word, a laugh together in the grocery line over some shared funny experience that bonds us with a stranger for a moment. When we are at our loneliest, lowest times in life, reaching out a hand, and also accepting one, is what gives us strength and hope that things may not be the same as they were before, but we will be OK because we are not alone. 1. Organic waste must be disposed of weekly for health reasons. The “easiest” way to do this would be to place the organic waste in colored plastic garbage bags, in the weekly garbage can. One could use a “green” or other color for organics and the regular white bags for other garbage. Once they arrive at your facility, use sorters to empty the organic waste bags to the composter collection.
CRIB NOTES
7. Most of the items you indicate are not to go with organic waste are already being processed in either the “recycled” waste or separately in hazardous waste. I am noticing that now hardly anything ends up in the weekly garbage can. I already have a medium size garbage can that is never full. With your new rules, I will consider reducing the size to a small container. I am a professional chemical engineer and don’t just want to whine without some ideas or food for thought. Here they are:
Iused to think living to the average lifespan of 80 was a given. I suppose it was the optimism in me, but it was also a sign of my naïveté. I felt robbed when my Grandpa Jack of Herculean strength lived to be only 84. It was hard to think a Superman of a guy like he was could ever die. One of my sisters’ and my favorite superhero memories of him was the time he emerged from swimming in the Paci c Ocean with seven or eight jelly sh stuck to his skin. From the beach my sisters and I asked, “What are those?” to which he coolly replied, “What, oh these?” and brushed them o as casually as if they were ants. Meanwhile my older sister was stung by one jellysh during the same trip and spent the next 12 hours in a feverish stupor. In our minds our grandfather was the strongest grandpa in the world and any of us would have bet he’d live to be at least 100. My 70-year-old mom was vibrant and still working full-time as a Realtor up until one month before she died. Again, I was stunned into humility, smacked with the reminder not to be so naïve; that age-old wisdom our elders would always say about being grateful for each day because tomorrow isn’t promised was true a er all. As a younger person my thoughts on death had been somewhat greedy, I realized. The very day of my mother’s funeral another El Dorado Hills mother who was young enough to be my mom’s daughter died suddenly. I realized that day how lucky I’d been to have had my mother for as long as I did, to have a mother who saw me into middle-age adulthood, when so many others, so many children, like those of that woman, lose a parent so young.
2. You and the composters are the garbage experts, so you should do the handling. It’s healthier and more manageable for smells.
3. If you refuse to allow my above suggestion, then provide a separate container for weekly pickup of organics. The other (existing) garbage could be picked up less frequently (either every other week or even monthly). I am aware that other cities (such as Livermore) utilize separate containers for organic waste. You should allow plastic bags for ease of handling and smell reduction. 4. The state should consider utilizing its “excess” funds to buy the organic bins. I am con dent that a more manageable, healthy and cost-e cient system could be developed. I encourage you to do more investigation and be willing to improve this onerous and unhealthy process. Major mistakes on homeless camp YEDITOR:oujust can’t make this stu up. The board gets close to approving a homeless camp and has to start over because Supervisor Wendy Thomas forgot that she owns a number of properties on Broadway but didn’t recuse herself. But that’s only one problem. Next the supervisors want to place this homeless camp on Perks Court leading onto Missouri Flat Road. A member of the Diamond Springs Fire Board testi ed that there are already too many automobile vs. pedestrian accidents on Missouri Flat. How many homeless being hit will be enough? We know the property is an old gas station/auto repair facility. Steel gas tanks are buried in ground and will need to be mitigated as a EPA cleanup site (unless it becomes a Super Site). How many millions will have to be spent to clean it up? Not to mention the roads that would have to be improved. This project was supposed to be nished before this year’s re season started. Missed that one! The sheri has proposed using the property next to the jail, putting in tiny homes (6-foot by 10 foot – suggested by Supervisor George Turnboo). The homeless have testi ed before the Human Rights Commission that their main concern is safety from rape, the and beatings. Cold and hunger came a er that. The Health and Human Services assistant director thinks his “clients” won’t be comfortable being so close to the jail. Really. Using Volunteers of America as the supervising agency is good but putting them at such a disadvantage as being responsible for pedestrian safety when their clients are o campus and maybe using drugs or alcohol is ridiculous. And let’s not forget the safety of the kids at Herbert Green Elementary School just down the street. VOA should insist that this center be placed by the EDC jail for the safety of their clients. Michael Raffety Village Life correspondent Late spring conditions enabled the El Dorado Irrigation District to fill all its alpine reservoirs. As of Aug. 2, water supplies were still relatively robust. Above 7,000 feet in altitude Caples Lake was 88% full, Silver Lake 88%, Echo Lake 94% and Lake Aloha 63%, according to EID data. Lake Aloha is the shallowest of the alpine reservoirs. Jenkinson Lake at about 4,000 feet altitude is 73% full, holding 29,970 acre-feet of water out of a maximum of 41,033. Jenkinson Lake is still receiving 14 acre-feet daily inflow from Camp Creek, which is a pre-1914 water right. The continued flow is a result of the loss of ground cover from the Caldor Fire, said EID Operations Director Dan Corcoran Aug. 8. “The district remains well positioned to meet 2022 customer demands,” Corcoran reported. He added the dis trict is “ready for continued dry condi tions during 2023 if necessary.” EID customers have used 15% less water than in 2021 and 10% less than 2020. “Late summer and fall demand projections decreased due to consistent conservation. Growth in new homes in the county has averaged 1% annually,” CorcoranCustomers’said.conservation has resulted in an updated carryover projection for Jenkinson Lake of 24,750 acre-feet, 60% of Directorcapacity.George Osborne noted the lake’s minimum carryover is 23,300. The State Water Resources Control Board curtailed some use of Weber Reservoir and Permit 21112 water rights. Nevertheless, Corcoran wrote that there is “no material impact to dis trict operations from the curtailments.”
Graphic courtesy of the EDC Department of Transportation A roundabout is proposed at the Bridlewood Drive and Bass Lake Road intersection to address safety concerns.
The Camp Creek tunnel feeding Jenkinson Lake and the Alpine reser voirs along with a 22-mile system of flumes and canals are pre-1914 water rights and not subject to regulation by the state water board. Folsom Reservoir, which hit the 90% mark in early June, has declined and is forecast to be 55% capacity this month, as the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation releases water from Folsom for Delta outflow requirements. That means EID is planning for low reservoir elevations in the fall. EID is not using its Bureau of Reclamation allocation. It is only using its Permit 21112 water rights. It is holding onto the 4,000 acre-feet in Weber Reservoir to sell to Westland Water District along with calibrated water savings from replacing the Main Ditch with a pipeline. EID recently completed a $42 mil lion stainless steel “straw” into Folsom Lake with submersible pumps that can be lowered or raised to preserve the cool water pool for fish releases. On Aug. 8 the EID board unani mously approved a six-year, $469,000 maintenance contract with Rockwell Automation. It is a preventative main tenance contract for the 4,160-volt variable frequency drive for the four submersible pumps. “The contract is needed due to increased safety concerns about the 4,160-volt equipment,” wrote Jess Leanos, EID electrical process control supervisor.Thedistrict has used Rockwell for three decades. The annual cost is $78,000, of which $47,500 is main tenance and the balance is insurance, noted EID General Manager Jim Abercrombie.“Wecan’tlose a day,” he added. The insurance portion means Rockwell will be on call, such that if the system goes out on a Friday night the contractor will be there to make sure the pumps have power Saturday.
Lining up at defensive end is Connor Dasmann, who led the Trojans in sacks with 9.5 and tackles for loss with 14 last season. In the 28-27 win over Elk Grove, he battled against Stanford University and California State University, Sacramento commits to fin ish with 12 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and a huge fourth quarter fumble recovery. “Connor has a motor that never stops,” Hall said. “He’s always go go go on the field.” Hall led the team in tackles last season with 79 and the fierce linebacker also forced two fumbles. “Jake’s outstanding,” said head coach Casey Taylor. “We expect big things from him this year.” In the winter Hall took to the wrestling mat where he and Connor Dasmann made it to state. Then on the track in the spring, he was on a 4x100 team with Martin and they were one race away from making state. Not only will Hall and Martin be defensive teammates, but they will both have responsibility carrying the football at running back. “Dwight is the guy who makes some one miss,” Hall said. “He’s fast and athletic.”Nextto Hall at linebacker will be Collin James, who finished with 41 tackles; more than half of those came in the final month of the last season. “We have our two starting linebackers Collin James and Jake Hall coming back from last year,” said Connor Dasmann who plays in front of the linebackers defensively. “I definitely have trust in those guys behind me.” The Trojans open on the road Aug. 19 at Cosumnes Oaks.

The five up front are big, especially juniors Zane Roeder (6 feet, 4 inches, 305 pounds) and Ethan Dasmann (6 feet, 5 inches, 275 pounds). The remaining starters look to be Aidan Beck and Cade Fair while Bryce Meggers or Elijah O’Meara are compet ing for the fifth spot. That size is key in a league like the Sierra Foothill League — the tough est in the Sac-Joaquin Section that regularly produces Division 1 talent. And size is also key in practice at Oak Ridge, where the competition is strong on both sides of the ball. “Our defense is insane,” Varella said. “Swaggy (Martin) is a lockdown cor ner so he’s always giving our receivers a good challenge. Jake (Hall) is a hell of a linebacker. He plugs the holes, reads defenses and Connor (Dasmann), he’s going to be outstanding. It really teaches me I don’t have all day in the pocket. I’ve got a good 3-4 seconds and I gotta get rid of that ball.” Martin last year tied for the team lead in pass deflections and interceptions as a cornerback. As a running back, the track star averaged 9.6 yards per carry. “I think we are gonna come back harder than ever and we’ve got a great team this year,” Martin said. “We’re just really physical and we are fast and quick. You won’t see us get scored on a lot.”

As the roundabout would provide at least one entrance to the future El Dorado Hills Community Services District Bass Lake Regional Park, the county has asked the EDHCSD for a $300,000 contribution, which was briefly discussed by the CSD board at its June meeting. An alternate access point proposed by the CSD at Silver Springs is a four-way stop, controlled intersection.Boardmembers were reluctant to approve the contribution, considering their outlay for the parkland purchase. “It was supposed to be a regional park by the county,” noted Director Sean Hansen. “I’m just dumbstruck by the fact that we had to buy property from the county to provide a regional park that they committed to providing and they’re not putting dollars into the park. “The county has $250,000 of our residents’ money to allocate to this so it should have been a wash,” Hansen continued. “We already paid for it so we’re offset 50 grand. I’m good with 50 grand.”Theitem was withdrawn from the agenda.“Ina perfect world, I’d love to see two roundabouts, one there at Silver Springs because one of the main con cerns is speed,” opined county Planning Commissioner Jon Vegna at the August El Dorado Hills Community Council meeting. “If you had a roundabout there and a roundabout at Bridlewood, that would significantly slow down the traffic but keep people moving.” “It’s a big concern for the Bass Lake area,” insisted Area Planning Advisory Committee Chair John Davey, men tioning the potential of 600-1,000 park ing spaces in the future park. “That’s more than there are residents there so that’s a big impact to circulation and safety.”Martinez reports the roundabout will be slightly bigger than the intersec tion itself and, in a best case scenario, construction would begin in 2024. If enough funding is not secured, the proj ect would be shelved while staff pursues other grants.

whether or not the appli cation window is show ing and also offers a push to talk “walkie-talkie” mode. “It doesn’t matter what program you launch, it detects when your micro phone is being used,” said Dhoot, explaining that although many compa nies offer mute buttons, MuteMe is the only one that touts a double mute feature that works even during talk-to-text func tions.“There’s a lot of research out there that says tech companies are actually listening to you even when you hit the mute button — like applications that tell you that you’re muted while you’re talking, which means it’s still listening to you,” Dhoot warned. “Not only is it listening to you, but it’s broadcast ing your audio to their servers. We double mute you seamlessly. It gives you that extra sense of security.”Davis,Dhoot and their wives were all working from home when they began tossing around ideas for a mute but ton. “For us it was an indicator,” said Davis of his family. Davis lacks a dedicated home office and wanted a way to let his wife and children know when he was in a meeting.Dhoot’s concerns centered around transi tion ease. “I needed a quick way to mute and unmute,” he said, admitting that he has often been caught tak ing notes and scrambling to unmute when asked a question.InSeptember 2020 Courtesy photo MuteMe ensures no more embarrassing slip-ups during video and audio conferencing. At the Aug. 2 meeting of the El Dorado County Board of Education, Adam Clark took his oath of o ce and was sworn in to his new role as trustee for Area 2. Clark lls the vacancy le by former member John Lane and will serve approximately four months to complete the term, which will be up for election in November. “We are glad to welcome Mr. Clark to this position,” said Board of Education President Heidi Weiland. “It was abundantly clear during his interview that his heart is dedicated to our students and community. We look forward to working with him for the bene t of El Dorado County.”Clarkis currently an attorney for the El Dorado County O ce of the Alternate Public Defender and works on juvenile delinquency cases, giving him a unique insight into the issues children in El Dorado County face. He is a graduate of El Dorado County schools, having attended both Camino School and El Dorado High School. Clark earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from San Francisco State University in 2003 and graduated from the University of the Paci c McGeorge School of Law in 2007. He passed the California Bar Exam and opened his own practice inHe2008.and his wife Christina are raising their two children here. “I want to do my part to serve my community, advocate for the rights of children, and promote the welfare of El Dorado County on the whole,” the new trustee shared. “I am honored to welcome Mr. Clark to the El Dorado County Board of Education,” said El Dorado County edcoe.org.tionofthebeElcommitmenttiseManansala.ofSuperintendentSchoolsDr.Ed“Hisexper-andlong-standingtoservingDoradoCountywillatremendousassettostudentsandfamiliesElDoradoCounty.”Formoreinforma-aboutEDCOEvisit
Dhoot, who has a history of concocting inventions on his home 3D printer, spooled out a prototype. He and Davis launched their rst iteration on Kickstarter, raising $150,000 in just three weeks. A er raising an additional $150,000 through Indiegogo, MuteMe was approached by Staples, which agreed to distribute their buttonHowever, nationwide.Davisadmits the product was not a success. “People didn’t know what it was,” he said, explaining that staples.com is a separate entity from the brick and mortar stores. “At the time, ground trafc wasn’t great either.” Nonetheless, the MuteMe button was enjoying prestige as the second most popular technology product on Kickstarter at the time and in January 2021, Shark Tank reached out. A er a grueling application process involving months of video submissions, the MuteMe segment aired Oct. 15, 2021, season 13 episode 2. “We got an o er but it was for too much of the company,” Davis revealed. By now, people were searching for the product on Amazon. “We got recruited to come on Amazon through Launchpad,” said Dhoot, admitting that they weren’t quite ready for that kind of exposure. “We didn’t have inventory; we were having challenges with our supply chain. You hesitate because it’s a big deal. You want to be sure your product is solid and ready to go.”Those challenges came in the form of skyrocketing freight charges as well as a chip shortage, which hit them four days before a major order. Facing delays from retooling for an alternate chip, the decision was made to have the manufacturer ship the device without rmware. “We unpackaged 20,000 devices, put the rmware on and repackaged them,” recounted Davis. It took 80 straight days, with friends and family pitching in, to accomplish the feat. They have since written programming for three families of chips in anticipation of future shortages. Although the startup has racked up more than $1 million in sales in under 18 months, Davis is quick to point out that success has been expensive, with legal fees and other outlays. But the future remains bright, despite many potential users returning to o ces. Not only are many still working from home, but MuteMe has seen a rising demand in o ce use. “We want to be a company that has products which support people who work from anywhere, not just at home,” insisted Davis.MuteMe is live on Amazon and recently launched a travel version, the MuteMe Mini, at half the price. The company also o ers custom engraved products, already elding orders for companies like Intel, Microso , Xbox and Facebook. Plans for future versions of the button are in the works, with features such as camera control, hand raising, speaker volume and ending meetings. A wireless product is slated as well, as is a door sign and a branded microphone product. For more information visit muteme.com.
