Let the dust settle DEAR ANNIE: My wife and I are a retired elderly couple living in a ranch-style home. Over the last four years, my wife has had some health issues and is limited in what she can do. I have been more or less a caregiver, doing all the chores around the house, such as cleaning, washing clothes, cooking and shopping. Her daughter, who is my stepdaughter and over 50 years old, has been asking to help us with the housework. So, this past week, we asked her to clean a dining room for us by dusting; washing windows; cleaning woodwork, a china closet, a buffet and a dining table; and sweeping the floor. I noticed this morning that the buffet looked unclean. I took a baby wipe and just went along the edges, and it was not clean, and the baby wipe was very dirty. I asked my wife if her daughter had cleaned the buffet. She said yes and that she applied Pledge. Should I approach my stepdaughter, who has a temper? I paid $50 for her work. Should I ignore it or tell her about my finding? Maybe I should just do the work myself. — Dusty Buffet Table Dear Dusty: It sounds like your stepdaughter might not be the best housekeeper in the world. At the same time, you sound very particular about how cleaning is done. Don’t say anything to your stepdaughter. She obviously tried, and her mom is not doing well. Just don’t have her clean again. ——— Dear Annie: This is an open letter to the women’s nightwear industry. Give us feminine pajamas. By us, I mean petite women under size 5. You make beautiful feminine nightgowns — that could go on the dance floor — but pajamas that look like we are going to work in the mines (or sleep in them). They have the same old men’s shirts with piping around and down the button front and

patch pocket. Where are the laces, ribbons, bows, baby buttons, ruffles and frills? Anything that shows we are female and sexy? We want necklines that are imaginative and decorative, that show we are women but not sluts. We want sleeves that keep us warm and are pretty, not just ser-

viceable. We want bottoms to keep our thighs from sticking together when it’s hot, and to keep us warm when it’s cold. And do camouflage the bigness of them — maybe just below the knee to mid-calf with lace or ribbons. And enough fabric to span bigger bellies comfortably. Even at 77, I want to look feminine and sexy for ME, let alone a partner. Use your imagination, and provide us pajamas we will be proud to wear. — Petite Lace and Bows Dear Petite Lace and Bows: Perhaps a quick online search could help you find special-sized, feminine PJ’s. If you still can’t find them, well, here is an opportunity to start your own business of sexy, feminine PJ’s for petite women. Yes, even at 77!

Parents wary of online date Dear Annie: I am a 27-year-old man who needs help. Recently, I met a guy via the internet. We hit it off and have a lot in common. In addition, he lives in the same state that I do. I’ve seen pictures of him, so I know what he looks like. He even gave me his phone number. I want to call him so we can stay in contact. The problem is that I’m on the same phone plan as my parents, and they are the type of people who prefer face-to-face meetings

and are wary of meeting people over the internet. How do I get them to understand that not all people you meet on the internet are bad people? — Different Generation Dear Different Generation: You are not going to get your parents to change their minds about the internet; and, to be quite honest, their fears have some merit. There are some really bad people online. At the same time, there are plenty of wonderful individuals who have met their future spouse online. Don’t worry about convincing your parents. Just live your life and be smart and safe, and consider paying for your own phone plan. ——— Dear Annie: Last year, on Sept. 5, 2019, to be exact, a reader wrote in about intermittent fasting and how it has changed her life. I discovered fasting after reading her letter to you and have had much success in losing weight and staying healthy. I would like to tell “Healthy and Happy” thank you. — Grateful Dear Grateful: Congratulations on your weight loss. Thank you for your letter, for sharing your success and for giving “Healthy and Happy” a shoutout. I am hopeful that “Healthy and Happy” will read this. And, in that same vein, I’d like to thank all of my readers who are willing to share their lives — the good, the bad and the ugly — with strangers. You never know the positive mark you can make. ——— Dear Annie: Due to COVID19, my siblings and I were not able to see our very elderly mother for more than two months. When her birthday came around in May, we created “Happy Birthday” signs and taped them to our cars. We then proceeded to do a drive-by parade, while beeping our horns and hooting and hollering and waving at her. My siblings’ ages run between 65 and 57 (there are seven of us), and we all have different health issues. So, this

drive-by benefited us all, and we got to see and celebrate our 94-year-old mom #AloneTogether. — Happy with a Parade Dear Happy with a Parade: Thank you for your letter! What a wonderful way to celebrate your mom. You can also do this for children’s birthday parties, graduations or really any special occasion that you want to enjoy company while celebrating safely.

Finding joy in having a friend Dear Annie: I am a 47-year-old married woman with two teenagers. I have a good marriage, although my husband is a difficult person to live with. He has mild OCD, is moody and has a temper. He is driven at work and, though respected in our community, is never romantic or thoughtful. He would never cheat on me, but he takes me for granted. I have tried to talk to him, but he refuses to see a therapist. So, I have gone myself. This has been helpful, and, to his credit, with prompting from me - as advised by my therapist — he has made some positive strides, particularly with his temper. Also, I have found fulfillment in a small business I founded and run, which keeps me busy. Overall, I am reasonably happy today, apart from when he is in a bad mood. I intend to stay in this marriage because we have kids and because I made a vow, and, ultimately, I love him. The problem is that I have secretly developed a crush on a male friend, who is married with kids as well. He and I have been friends via mainly our church for many years, though we also chat at community events. Nothing inappropriate has happened between us, but he often texts me during the workday, or at night, cute links or jokes - nothing inappropriate and usually very humorous, about things we have discussed or topics in which he knows I’m interested. I welcome

the attention and look forward to his messages. This has been going on for several years. I believe he has a stable marriage, but his wife has mental health issues, such as depression, agoraphobia and mild alcoholism. I know these weigh on him, though he never discusses it with me. I suspect he enjoys my “company” also as an escape, though he is ultimately devoted to his wife. Still, I sometimes find myself daydreaming, “What if?” My question is whether I should force myself to end the friendship and stop the texting. On the one hand, I feel guilty, enjoying the virtual company of a man who is not my husband, and a married man at that. But on the other, his warmth and friendship are very valuable to me and bring me needed joy, especially on tough days. I would feel great sadness to end things, particularly not being able to explain to him why. — Torn in Ontario Dear Torn in Ontario: It is OK to have a friend of the opposite gender who makes you laugh and brings you joy. You both sound like you are devoted to your spouses, so there is nothing wrong with having friends. However, your recent development of a crush on him likely has more to do with your current marriage than with your friend. Don’t take a dramatic stance and run away from your friend because you have feelings for him, but rather run to a good marriage counselor and try and fall back in love with your husband. Marriage is work, and we get out of it what we put into it. The therapy you underwent gave you the tools to find acceptance and fulfillment, and your husband started to work on his temper. Continuing therapy could offer you more tools to not feel guilty for finding joy in friends. Having a happy wife might let your husband loosen up a little and begin to laugh with you. Finding joy in life is so valuable. Sometimes, you just have to work on finding — and keeping — it.
