Chuck Huebner, 79, has dedicated his life to his country. The result of 40 years of service between various military branches and government departments resulted in a lifetime of stories recently published as “On The Road Again.”
The book is chock-full of rsthand accounts of adventure. Growing up as a farm boy in upstate New York, ying in ghter jets during Vietnam, driving Pope John Paul II in Alaska and getting accused of being the Zodiac Killer are just the tip of the iceberg.
“My friends, relatives and I would tell stories from over the years,” Huebner said. “Someone told me ‘you ought to

Education pioneer and longtime El Dorado Hills resident Margaret Fortune recently announced her candidacy for the open El Dorado County Board of Supervisors District 1 seat.
Fortune enters the race having spent her career building and leading a network of public charter schools dedicated to li ing up the academic performance of underserved students across Sacramento and San Bernardino counties, advising two California governors on education policy and operating an organization with 460 employees and a $52 million budget.
MARGARET FORTUNE
“We need more ‘let’s get this done’ from our elected leaders, more cooperation and better decision-making,” said Fortune. “I’m running because I, like most residents, love the community spirit and amenities of El Dorado Hills and want to see our community ourish.
“That includes bringing seniors more housing opportunities they can a ord and that let them downsize if they want without having to move away. We must protect our open space, ensure public safety, improve wild re prevention and response, and it’s

EDH teen takes an important message to D.C.
Noel Stack Managing editor
Marisa Bricca doesn’t shy away from a challenge
— even one as daunting as the federal government. This summer the El Dorado Hills teen lent her voice to a very personal and important cause, funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research, as part of the 2023 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Children’s Congress.
“Arriving in person adds strength to JDRF’s voice and mission,” Marisa told Village Life.
“I thought it was important to go there to challenge (the) government to fund T1D research and to help people who are not fortunate enough to a ord insulin and supplies. Going meant making a di erence and helping all diabetics.”
Marisa was diagnosed with T1D at age 7. She was joined in Washington, D.C., by more than 160 other youth
from across the country who have the same disease.
“I learned that having community — people I can help and people to rely on — is very important,” she shared. “I met many type 1 diabetics
who I plan to stay in contact with for a long time.”
Marisa spoke with Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s and Sen. Alex Padilla’s congressional aides and Congressman Tom McClintock’s chief of sta to discuss a proposal
to get more funding to lower the cost of insulin and for the Special Diabetes Program. The program’s reauthorization act was introduced earlier this year. “They all seemed receptive and I hope SDP
passes and that the insulin prices are lower,” Marisa said.
“The trip opened my eyes on how our government works,” she added. “I got to sit in on a senate meeting and JDRF representatives spoke. I thought it was really cool to be able to have a voice and speak out for programs that can improve the lives of all diabetics.”
A er she nishes high school, the Oak Ridge High School senior said she plans to study biomedical engineering in college and pursue a career that helps those with diabetes.
“The new technology that has come out in my lifetime like the insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor has drastically improved my life. They both help me control my blood glucose levels better,” she said. “I spend less time managing diabetes and more time living my life. I want to add to the advances and be able to make a cure for type 1 diabetes possible.”
Students asked to submit ‘stars and stripes’ essay
News release
The Charlotte Parkhurst Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Folsom sponsors the 202324 American History Essay Contest for all Folsom and El Dorado Hills students in h through eighth grades. Students in public, private, parochial or those who are homeschoolers are eligible to submit their essays.
This year’s essay topic touches a musical note familiar to almost everyone. On May 14, 1897, John Philip Sousa, the great American composer and conductor known for American military marches, played his new march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” This song would become the national march
of the United States on Dec. 11, 1987.
Students participating in this essay contest are asked to imagine it is 1897 and they are a newspaper reporter for The Philadelphia Times. Their newspaper editor has asked them to write an article about the song being performed that day. The article needs to talk about Sousa’s life and the story behind the song. It is the rst performance of the song, so the article needs to include thoughts about the music and how the audience reacts to what is seen and heard that day.
Students will need to submit essays for judging by Nov. 1, 2023. All participants will receive a certi cate of participation. One essay at each grade level will be selected as the chapter winner.
Winners at each grade level will receive a bronze medal and their essay will be advanced to the California State DAR American history chair for further competition opportunities. For more information on this contest go to folsom.californiadar.org, where all documents about the contest can be downloaded. Submissions will be accepted electronically only. Email essays to AmericanHistoryEssay@gmail.com.
To learn more about the Charlotte Parkhurst Chapter of DAR and honoring and preserving the legacy of potential revolutionary ancestors in your family email charlotteparkhurstdar@gmail.com or the visit the chapter website at folsom.californiadar.org.

write a book’.”
After years of hearing the comment, the Cameron Park resident finally put his words on the page. “On The Road Again” is the result of five years of work, beginning in 2018 and completed in May 2023.
“Mostly I did it for family and friends (to preserve) my history,” Huebner said about his motivation for writing the book. “(It contains) a lot of things I never talked about much … I had to do a lot of research. I had no notes; it was just all from memory.”
The name of the book itself is inspired by a story from his time alongside President Reagan. After joining the Secret Service and serving at a location in Portland, Ore., Huebner was assigned to then Gov. Reagan’s security detail during the 1980 election.
Country music artist Willie Nelson had released the song “On The Road Again” in the same year and Reagan was a big fan, according to Huebner. It became tradition for the pilot of their plane to play Nelson’s song after taking off from cities along the
she continued. “We achieve these goals through leadership and action. That’s what I’ll bring.”
In addition to her business experience in the nonprofit sector, Fortune has been an education advisor to two California governors, Gray Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. She was the chair of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, a commissioner on the First 5 California Commission and a trustee on the California State University Board of Trustees for eight years.
Fortune’s parents were educators and she went to school with them as a child. She wanted schools to be better for underserved children in California, so Fortune founded Fortune School, a network of 12 public charter schools, serving 2,200 students located in Sacramento and San Bernardino. She has built nonprofit schools from the ground up, while growing her team to 460 educators focused on a mission to prepare low-income students for college starting in preschool through 12th grade. Fortune founded an early college high school in partnership with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Cosumnes River College where in 2023 100% of seniors graduated, 82% were accepted to a four-year college and over a third earned full-ride scholarships.
campaign trail.
His book was made possible through Barnes and Noble’s self-publishing service B&N Press and is available for purchase at Barnesandnoble.com.
Huebner’s wife, Karyn, served as the book’s editor and is listed on Barnes and Noble’s website as the author, something that makes Huebner laugh. He also cited the availability of the internet as well as the public nature of the presidency as his saving grace when piecing together his stories.
“You can go on the internet and put in just a general concept like ‘President Reagan, Grenada’ and you’ll come up with a whole list of (resources),” Hueber said.
Now that his book is complete — all 459 pages of it — Huebner has begun his newest project in retirement, home winemaking. He currently is the mentor coordinator of the El Dorado Home Winemakers Club and tends to his own vineyard, conveniently located in his front yard.
Known as a problem solver, Fortune was asked by Butte County’s school superintendent to help re-open seven schools that had burned down in the Camp Fire. Volunteering in the wildfire relief effort to help the children of Paradise get back to school moved Fortune to stay engaged in wildfire prevention. She was elected to the El Dorado Resource Conservation District Board in 2023.
A graduate of University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor’s in political science, Fortune earned her master’s in public policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo awarded Fortune an honorary doctorate for her contributions to the field of education.
Fortune, 51, has lived in El Dorado Hills with her wife Anette for nearly a decade. Anette grew up in a small town in Germany and is adjunct faculty in child development at Folsom Lake College.
Fortune is running for supervisor for District 1 to serve the community where she and Anette have made a happy home and found friends with common values. She loves living in a community where people care about friendship and family. Her goal is to build on the tradition of solid leadership so the communities in District 1 continue to thrive.

Chefs will love the updated kitchen with granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, an eight-burner gas range with hood, dining bar and an abundance of cabinetry plus a pantry cabinet. Adjacent to the kitchen is a formal dining area with a charming chandelier.
To the le of the formal dining area there is an o ce with built in cabinetry. The home has three bedrooms and two full bathrooms downstairs as well as a laundry room with storage and a sink.

The ranch’s other permanent xtures include three 500-gallon propane tanks, a commercial-grade propane generator and a 1,500-gallon below-ground, cement water storage tank and its own well. The property is self-sustainable and can operate independent of the grid in an emergency for several weeks or inde nitely with adequate propane gas supply.
The property’s hilltop location provides spectacular views of sunsets over the Sacramento Valley horizon in the west and sunrises over the Sierra Nevada to the east. Its elevation of approximately 2,300 feet provides the ideal climate necessary to support a variety of commercial crops, vineyards or livestock and an abundance of trees. From the deck, watch the local wildlife. The area was inhabited by Native Americans into the 19th century and the occasional arrowhead, cooking utensil or grinding rock can still be found. The property has a small creek and a dam reputedly built by Chinese immigrant miners during the Gold Rush.

in March 2023, Sizemore mentored Kisilewicz, o ering advice about acting and life.
“He was such a great actor,” Kisilewicz told Village Life. “And he gave away so much free knowledge.”
Now Kisilewicz is paying tribute to his mentor with a show near where his acting journey began. Prior to Sizemore’s death the two had been planning to star in a play together. Kisilewicz said reading with Sizemore “lit me up” but the pair didn’t get further than words on a page before a brain aneurysm took the 61-year-old’s life. Kisilewicz pursued the project despite the tough loss. “Teeth,” written by Rick Rocha and A.L. Cook, opens at Cal Cap Black Box Theatre in Rancho Cordova Friday, Sept. 8. Actor Michael Cram, known
for “Flashpoint” and “To Catch A Killer,” stars alongside Kisilewicz in the “drilling” dramatic comedy.
“It’s really funny … a play like you’ve never

their own devices.
“Michael is fantastic,” Kisilewicz said. “He’s a very committed, good actor.”
Kisilewicz got the acting bug thanks to a failing grade in high school drama. He asked teacher Janet Henke how he could improve. “Audition for the school play,” he said she advised.
Kisilewicz, who now calls performing on stage “magical,” recalled groaning at her words — he was a basketball player, not an actor — but he heeded her advice and landed the part of a knight in “The King’s New Threads,” a student-written play based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” “I was hooked,” he admitted. “On stage I can’t get in trouble for being myself (and) I didn’t get nervous.”
He later played Mr. Kraler in the ORHS production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” and by then had decided to pursue an acting career. A er graduation he auditioned for a chance

FINANCIAL FOCUS
Own a business? Consider these retirement plans
If you own a small business or are selfemployed, you’ve always got plenty to do, but you can’t forget about the days when you’ll be less busy — that is, when you’re retired. How can you prepare for that time of your life?
One key step is establishing a retirement plan for your business or yourself. And thanks to the 2022 SECURE 2.0 Act, you can now receive tax credits for opening and administering a 401(k), SEP-IRA or SIMPLE IRA. These aren’t the only plans available for small businesses or sole proprietors, but they are among the most popular. Let’s look at each of them:
A 401(k) o ers several key bene ts: First, any earnings growth is tax deferred, and your contributions can be tax deductible. (Taxes are due upon withdrawal and withdrawals prior to age 59½ may be subject to a 10% penalty.)
If you choose a Roth 401(k), your contributions aren’t deductible, but your earnings and withdrawals will be tax free, provided you meet certain conditions. And a 401(k) o ers a variety of investment options. If you have workers, you’ll need to consider whether to o er matching contributions, which are tax deductible to you, up to the limit of 25% of compensation paid to eligible employees.
But even if you’re self-employed, with no employees other than your spouse, you can establish what’s known as a “solo” or “owner-only” 401(k). In 2023, you can put in up to $22,500 as an employee, plus a catch-up contribution of $7,500 if you’re 50 or older, for a total
public classes on a wide variety of home gardening subjects throughout the year, including lectures and/or hands-on demonstrations. We sta a help desk at our o ce where people can call about gardening problems and also walk in with samples of plant problems. We have information booths at county
the Sherwood Demonstration Garden, which has 16 themed gardens and is open to the public March through November on Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
As you can see, there are many areas of home gar-
of $30,000. Plus, you can contribute an additional 25% of earned income as an employer, up to an overall employee and employer maximum of $66,000 (or $73,500 if you’re 50 or older).
A SEP-IRA may be attractive to you if you’re self-employed or if you own a business but have few or no employees. That’s because you must contribute an equal percentage of your own compensation to every eligible employee. In 2023, you can contribute up to $66,000 or 25% of your income, whichever is less.
A SIMPLE IRA is easy to establish and administer. As with an SEP-IRA, earnings in a SIMPLE IRA can grow on a tax-deferred basis. If you have employees, they aren’t required to contribute to this plan — but you are. You must match up to 3% of employees’ contributions or provide 2% of their annual salaries, although you do have some exibility. If your business goes through a rough patch, you can temporarily decrease SIMPLE IRA contributions to 1% for up to two years out of the previous ve. Your contributions to your employees’ accounts are tax deductible, but in in terms of building resources for your own retirement, a SIMPLE IRA may be less appealing because of its contribution limits, which are relatively low compared to a 401(k) or SEP IRA. In 2023, you can put in up to $15,500 or $19,000 if you’re 50 or older.
You should consult with your tax advisor to determine which retirement plan is right for you. Your nancial advisor can also help you explore your options. And the sooner you put a plan to work, the better.

Gov. Newsom appoints new El Dorado County judge
Odin Rasco
Staff writer
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the appointment of 10 new judges across the state Aug. 18, including one who will preside over El Dorado County Superior Court’s Department 8.
Hana Balfour, a Democrat, will fill the vacancy left by Judge Dylan Sullivan, who served on the bench for nine years before retiring in April. Prior to her appointment as judge, Balfour had been appointed as Court Commissioner for the county, according to a press release from the court in January. While serving as commissioner, Balfour specialized in cases involving
juvenile dependency and delinquency, guardianships, child support, domestic violence and civil harassment and traffic.
Balfour has served on multiple committees regarding court improvement, including the establishment of the Sacramento Family Treatment Court, a model drug treatment court in the nation. She has testified before the state legislature regarding dependency-related legislation and has organized multiple continuing legal education programs for dependency practitioners.
Prior to her time with the county court, Balfour was an associate at the law office of Dale S. Wilson from 2000-06, and managing attorney there from 200622, according to a press release from the Governor’s Office. Balfour received her juris doctorate from McGeorge School of Law and is a member of the Traynor Society, having graduated with honors. She received her bachelor of arts in political science from the University of California, Davis, where she was also an All-American gymnast.
Balfour will preside over the court’s Dept. 8 at this time but may move to another department if a replacement is found, according to a county court representative.

“I walked away crying but I got in,” Kisilewicz said. He studied there for two years before launching his career — at first posing as his own manager to land auditions. “You really have to do whatever it takes,” he said with a smile.
Since then Kisilewicz has had roles on stage and in several movies, including “A Party Gone Wrong,” “Notorious Nick” and “Twisted Little Lies.” The film “Gimme My Money” is in production and he has a role in the upcoming film “Degenerate,” slated to star Emile Hirsch.
After “Teeth” finishes its run in Rancho Cordova, the play moves down to Los Angeles for a limited engagement. Kisilewicz said he hopes to also take the show to NYC.
After that, and once the writers’ and actors’ strike concludes,” Kisilewicz said his goal is to “star in a lot of movies.” He said he’d love to perform on screen with Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke and continue working with his contemporaries like writers Cook and Rocha.
With confidence and movie star charm, he concluded, “I have no doubt that I’m going to have a good career.”
Performances of “Teeth” take place at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Sept. 8 & 9 and 15 & 16, and 3 p.m. Sundays, Sept. 10 & 17, at Cal Cap Black Box Theatre, 9845 Horn Road, Suite 100, Rancho Cordova. For tickets and more information call (916) 706-2000 or visit calcapblackbox.com/teeth.
A dentistry that aims to be a home away from home
home.
“We know all of our patients. They’re our friends,” said Dr. Stanec, who works alongside his wife and office manager, Elena, in his Cameron Park office. “The experience in our office is very personal. We’re very small and greet each patient by name when they walk in. It’s a comfortable, homey place to have dental work done, and we like it that way.”
Dr. Stanec has been in dentistry in the Cameron Park area since 2002. As a kid, he was “always into science and math” and loved the idea of owning his own business. “I ran a lawn-mowing business as a kid — always had some kind of business going — so becoming a dentist and owning my own practice just made sense,” said Dr. Stanec. Dr. Stanec did his undergraduate work at Cal Poly,
San Luis Obispo and then attended dental school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He graduated from Northwestern in 2001 and says that, although he was born and raised in San Jose, it was a natural draw to open his practice in the foothills. “Elena and I love this area. We had a lot of family and friends here and thought it would be a great place to raise our kids.”
In his office, Dr. Stanec offers a full scope of general and cosmetic dentistry with expertise ranging from porcelain veneers and dental implants to crowns and bridges and more. Unlike many other dentists, Dr. Stanec doesn’t employ dental hygienists or other technicians but does all of his dental work himself.
“I spend a lot of one-on-one time with my patients. It’s fun for me to do the work myself because I get to spend more time with my patients and hang out with them and really get to know them. It makes it fun to do what I do,” said Dr. Stanec.
Another advantage of keeping his practice small is that, because he sees every patient one at a time, Dr. Stanec can be very thorough and immediately answer any questions that come up. He is also able to really respect his patients’ time. “I am almost always early or on time,” said Dr. Stanec. “My patients know that, so they’re usually early or on time for their appointments, too. It’s a win win for everyone.”
Dr. Stanec is located at 3955 Cameron Park Drive — in Cameron Park. His office is right near the Goldorado Shopping Center, directly across from the new Walgreens on Palmer Drive, and is very conveniently located for all of his patients. The move is just one more way Dr. Stanec shows his commitment to providing the best possible care for his patients.
“I look forward to going to work and getting to see who’s on the schedule every day,” said Dr. Stanec.
“I love the work that I do and am proud to do really quality work. Originally I’d planned to be a little bigger, but then I realized I liked it this way. I really enjoy my patients and
this way I can get to know them well.”
For more information or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Stanec, visit drstanec.com or call 530-676-6500.
