Oak Ridge coach’s suspension stands

training day

Oak Ridge High School cross country and track and field coach Bob Wright’s suspension was upheld Friday by the El Dorado Union High School District Board of Trustees Wright was suspended by the board June 29 after he didn’t fill out a use of facilities permit for a May 23 race organized by Jesuit High School distance runner Matt Strangio. Wright has coached at Oak Ridge since 1996. At the trustees’ Aug. 25 meeting supporters of Wright spoke for two hours in favor of lifting the suspension. Superintendent Ron Carruth at the time said the board — who voted 5-0 to suspend Wright — would consider everything said by Wright’s supporters. Three days later Wright said the board informed him they had decided to uphold the suspension, which excludes him from coaching for the entire 2020-21 academic school year.

EDH Community Emergency Response Team ready to go Sel Richard Staff writer

A

group was recently faced with a scenario in which members were to enter a collapsed building to rescue injured victims. El Dorado Hills Fire Department’s first Community Emergency Response Team was off and running. Although CERT training is new to El Dorado Hills, it is based on a program initially developed in 1985 to build a volunteer force for Los Angeles area earthquake disasters. By 1993 it became a national program, adopted by FEMA, to aid in disaster relief, preparedness and community awareness. Originally launched last November, the EDHFD program was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. A much smaller class was formed in June to ensure appropriate social distancing. In three weeks the eight trainees completed more than 20 hours of hands-on training for Level Three — entry level certification. For their final exercise June 27, trainees were required to gain entry and extinguish a fire, survey the interior of a building,

CERT members learn basic emergency skills during their training sessions. The team will continue to train so it can appropriately respond should a disaster strike the community. triage, move and provide care for injured patients. “It’s very real-world stuff that your fire department does,” said El Dorado Hills Fire Inspector Bryce DeWitt, adding that each team member acted in all roles: caregiver, incident command and observer.

DeWitt has been working on the local version of the program for the past year. In Level Three, trainees focused on awareness and preparedness, compiling their own 72-hour kit to provide survival or shelter-in-place supplies n

A recent COVID-19 update from El Dorado County Public Health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams to the county Board of Supervisors included the prospect that in the next few weeks, more businesses will be allowed to open, if only partially. As of Sept. 3, the county had seen 988 cases of COVID-19 since the first case was reported March 20, including two deaths, and the number of cases reported each day appears to be declining. Williams encouraged people who have symptoms or who have been exposed to others who might have the disease to get tested. Williams said the state is renegotiating contracts for community testing sites, aiming to double the state’s testing capacity and reduce turnaround time for results to 24 to 48 hours. Other changes at the state level include moving to a tier framework to evaluate the level of disease transmission

Youth leaders thrive at camp Meghna Sehrawat Hands4Hope Youth Board Treasurer

o matter rain or shine or global pandemic, Hands4Hope put on an amazing leadership camp with 63 youth in attendance. The camp was themed Retreat Island and had both a safe, in-person component plus virtual workshops and team-building activities. The Hands4Hope Education Team, along with the Youth Board Executive Committee, planned and hosted two camps — one for middle school leaders and one for high school leaders. Traditionally, camp is a time when all the high school and middle school leaders come together to learn more about each other and how to lead their peers through the stages of service learning. The Hands4Hope Leadership Camp happens once a year and is usually held for multiple days at Coloma Resort in conjunction with Coloma Outdoor

Discovery School, but this year looked a little different. The camp hosted youth leaders from 12 local middle and high schools, with 51 leaders attending the in-person, half-day retreats and an additional 12 youth leaders joining in for the virtual Zoom workshops. The hybrid camp kicked off with an in-person day camp, featuring leadership training, team-building and character development activities. Due to the pandemic, the training day followed state and county guidelines, requiring masks and social distancing. The venue was the Labyrinth, a local retreat site owned by the Reed Family in Diamond Springs. The property set the tone for a peaceful, creative and engaging environment. Leaders participated in learning a wide variety of tools. Youth were taught about their specific roles as leaders and how to go n
