In addition, the letter attests to the destruction of records relating to the investigation less than a month following the issuance of the report. “Most distressing of all, however, is the admission by the current grand jury foreperson, Marisa Nickles, in an email to District General Manager Kevin Loewen dated July 17, that ‘[a] ll records related to the 2021-22 grand jury investigations have been destroyed,’” the letter revealed.

El Dorado Hills Community Services District board members accused the El Dorado County Grand Jury of subpar performance in a draft of its formal response to an investigation regarding the CSD’s management of Landscape and Lighting Assessment Districts.

Hansen took exception to the jury’s reference to con flicts of interest. “This definition by the grand jury is fiction,” he reiterated. “They made it up. There’s a dis agreement, not a conflict of interest.”

Joann Weber was named the 2021-22 Classified employee of the year.

“This is a work of fiction,” declared board member Sean Hansen, calling the report “obnoxious and egre giously wrong.” Though the CSD disagrees with 10 of the report’s 13 findings, Hansen admits two are interesting. “For example, LLADs sharing in revenue for field rental program ming … it’s a good idea,” he conceded.Theother finding the CSD approved of involved the impact of outsourced contract services on LLAD assessments to which the letter noted could be in the favor of the LLAD members. The CSD agreed all information concerning LLADs is not consolidated on the CSD’s webpage for LLADs.

With her twin kling brown eyes and mis chievous grin, it’s no wonder Joann Weber is a hit in the Brooks Elementary School lunchroom — and the feeling is mutual. Just shy of her 87th birth day, Weber is overjoyed school is back in session, often greeting the chil dren by Webername.began her 22 years in the Buckeye Union School District at Brooks Elementary as a playground monitor and has enjoyed jobs at Silva Valley Elementary, Rolling Hills Middle School and Blue Oak Elementary. “this is a work of fiction.”

For years Joann Weber has delivered lunch and a smile to Brooks elementary school students. the 86-year-old said she loves her interactions with the kids.

“…the district expresses its dismay at the slipshod man ner in which the grand jury conducted and concluded its investigation,” the 16-page letter reads. The term “strate gically forced ignorance” is being suggested as a possible edit. “Both the oral testimony and the documentation provided by the district demonstrated the inaccuracy of many of the inquiries made by the grand jury during its investigation.”ReleasedJune 30, the grand jury report focused on calculation of assessment amounts, the appeals process, rental income credits and possible conflicts of interest between the CSD and LLADs.

“What the statute says is that a request can be made for all non-privileged materials on which the grand jury relied in rendering its report,” noted CSD legal counsel David Tyra, who pointed out that there is no prohibition in the code against the destruction of records. “The time period from the date of the report to the recognition in communication to GM Loewen that stated that the records had been destroyed — that was a less than 30-day time period. That seemed odd.”

DoubleCoffeeShotBar is the newest addi tion to the Sienna Ridge Shopping Center in El Dorado Hills. Open since Aug. 6, husband and wife owners Brendan and Kat McCarthy searched the county for the perfect spot to share their love of food and drinks with their new neighbors.

The new space is approximately 6,500 square feet, down from La Borgata’s 10,000 square feet plus exten sive patios which, Karoline conceded, has been chal lenging to staff particularly after COVID shutdowns. owners Mark and Karoline Platt have never shied away from piling more on their dinner plate — proverbial dinner plate, that is. Not only are they in the midst of renovating the site above Pottery World in the Montaño De El Dorado Shopping Plaza to relocate Sienna from La Borgata, but the couple has just opened a brand-new restaurant in the El Dorado Hills Town Center, South Fork Grille.

Patrons sitting at the luscious custom bar top depicting a pearlescent cobalt estuary can enjoy cocktails named after South Fork river rapids such as Troublemaker and Hospital Bar. Most entrees run $25 to $32 and include a selection of burgers, sandwiches and salads, as well as the ever-popular fitness special.

The concept is named after the South Fork of the American River, which runs through El Dorado County. And whereas Sienna is a wine-country inspired brand, offering more intricate sauces and preparations, South Fork Grille skews to a more casual vibe.“It’s really fun and playful,” Karoline revealed.

Employee of the Year.

Weber grew up in Roseville, gradu ating from Roseville High School in 1953. She met her husband Daniel while he was stationed at McClellan Air Force Base. A few months into their courtship, he asked Weber what she was doing on Dec. 27. Weber replied she was doing nothing, surprised when his next question was, “Do you want to get married?” After informing him that Catholics in California don’t having weddings on Saturday, he gave her the choice of waiting until June.

Weber soon branched out to dancing at Four Seasons and Snap Fitness, as well as the Placerville Veterans Memorial Hall. And every Friday night Weber scuffs and brushes at the Ballroom of Sacramento.“Ididn’teven know there was any thing such as line dancing,” Weber declared. “I just thought I’d shut my daughter up for a while and go. And, man alive, you can’t keep me away from it.”While Weber is both young at heart as well as in physique, she is quick to point out her good fortune. “I’ve been blessed with good health and I am grateful for that,” she noted. “I walk two miles every day with my dog and I keep busy. I know the structure in my life keeps me going. I start the day with a positive attitude because I get to see the kids. And I’ve got awesome neighbors and greatWeberfriends.”alsowelcomes new challenges, having recently asked her grandson to get her some piano tutorials. She swears her labradoodle Murphy loves it when she is banging out the boogie tunes. However, she confessed, eating healthfully is not her strong point. “I like a lot of the stuff that’s not good for you,” she said with a smirk. “I still like my Pepsi and I like my cookies.”

Her candidness resonates with young and old alike. “The kids adore her,” enthused Brooks librarian Kari Spero, who counts herself as lucky that Weber is part of the staff.

The Jackson Elementary PTO held its annual Ice Cream Social last month. This year 25 students from fourth and fifth grades sold crafts they created in an effort to be official It Takes A Village sponsors for the upcoming Walk With Austin TRYathlon.Atotal of $1,481.86 was raised during the two-hour event, garnering not only donations, but attention to a worthy cause.

In addition to crafts, Handel’s Ice Cream was there to help raise funds and cool the crowds off by offer

Sixth-grader Kaitlin Strawm and eight-grader Stephanie Estrada, both from Marina Village Middle School, helped their friends and neighbors, the Slade brothers — Jackson (fifth grade), Jonathan (fourth grade) along with older brother James (seventh grade) — create and sell Perler bead keychains as well as scented candles made from donated soda cans. The friends said they would head straight home from school each day to work on their project, which Kaitlin said took about a week, with a bit of a learning curve. They used measuring cups to warm the wax in hot water and, once in liquid form, they would pour the wax into the various soda cans, adding scents such as vanilla, cinnamon, pumpkin and ocean. Luckily for the group, Kaitlin’s grandmother makes candles and was able to donate the different scents. Once com pleted, the group walked door to door in their neigh borhood and had already raised $700 prior to Jackson’s event.Fourth-grader Lucy J. Rosetti told Village Life she spent about three days painting rocks with her mom. Her creations sold for $5 each and shoppers had their work cut out for them; it was tough to decide between hatching chicks, calico cats, blue crabs and even the

ing three of its most favorite flavors: chocolate, mint chocolate chip and Graham Central Station. The Pink Ice Cream Cart Co. was prepared with everything from snow cones to missile pops and Authentic Street Taco was dishing out tasty dinner fare from the widely recognized food truck.

The second annual Walk With Austin TRY-athlon is scheduled on Oct. 1 at EDH Community Park. For more information visit walkwithaustin.org/events.

In 2019 Walk with Austin became an official non profit organization created by parents Holly and Adam Reininger. Their ongoing goal is to provide fun opportunities for children with disabilities after their son, Austin, was diagnosed with an extremely rare dis ease with no known cure. The Reiningers have since made it their mission to help other children with dis abilities and their families.

Stephanie Estrada, Jackson Slade Jonathan Slade, Kaitlin Strawm and James Slade, left photo, sell candle creations and Perler bead keychains at last month’s Jackson Elementary School fundraiser benefiting the upcoming Walk with Austin TRY-athlon. At right, Lucy Rosetti holds up some of the painted rocks she made to sell.

Lakeview Elementary School students were welcomed back to school with a colorful new mural.

Lakeview gets long-awaited beautification

ued. “I remember getting chills the moment Lora and I stood in the amphitheater as she showed me the draft of her design. It was a perfect combination of paint and vinyl.”

Principal Kathy Miracle explained how Lora Watts of Project Luma began working with Lakeview more than three years ago when the need for school beautification met Watts’ passion for designing art and adding color to schools.

Elementary students and parents were greeted by a sunny new mural on the first day back to school.

“I remember getting chills the moment Lora and I stood in the amphitheater as she showed me the draft of her design. It was a perfect combination of paint and vinyl.”

Bermudez and her husband, Alexis, spent count less hours this summer to complete the long-antici pated mural project.

Although the mural was planned to be completed in 2020, fundraisers were put on hold after the chal lenges of COVID-19 hit. Generous partners later stepped up to bring the mural to fruition. First the school secured fund ing through its PTO and Lakeview also received a grant from Raley’s.

“Lora (Watts) generously donated her design fee for our mural, which made the project possible,” Miracle explained. “We were also fortunate to employ a tal ented artist and Lakeview staff member, Lana Bermudez, who was excited to accept the difficult job of painting the mural.”

“PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) President Tyson Bunch and I had simultaneously discussed our hopes of creating a more welcoming environ ment,” Miracle explained. “After spending hours bouncing ideas around, Lora generously created amazing options for us.

“The result is absolutely breathtaking,” Miracle added. “Our 2022 Lakeview SOAR Mural will be an attraction at Lakeview for many years to come.”
