Honoring a hero

The community turned out to show their support for fallen El Dorado County sheriff’s deputy Brian Ishmael’s family and the EDSO Honor Guard Saturday as Sierra Vista Winery’s Hero Run 5K fundraiser, postponed for months due to COVID-19, was finally able to take place. While the 5K couldn’t take place as originally planned, attendees were able to stroll through the vines, wine, dine and dance — all in honor of one of EDSO’s finest, Brian Ishmael. Event manager Lynzee Schram, retired California Highway Patrol officer Stu Elliott, EDSO Lt. Jeff Leikauf and Sierra Vista owner Jim Czachorowski, from left, photo above, hold a custom-built thin-blue-line wood flag that is also a challenge coin holder. The center of each star is decorated with .40 caliber casings, the same caliber of ammunition used by law enforcement. Elliott handcrafted the flag for the silent auction; one of many special items donated to help raise funds. Sierra Vista created two special wines for the event — Fallen Hero White and Fallen Hero Red, named not only for deputy Ishmael, who was killed in the line of duty Oct. 23, 2019, but also for the grapes used to make the wine, perfectly fine fruit left behind when it fell to the ground during harvest. To honor Ishmael’s badge No. 1689, the winery will donate to the Ishmael family $16.89 for each bottle of wine sold and $168.90 for each case sold.

After an hour-long discussion on defining the role of the county’s Human Rights Commission, the El Dorado Board of Supervisors voted to have staff and members of the board draft a new ordinance that will clarify the commission’s mission. Previously Supervisor Lori Parlin recommended updating the Human Rights Commission’s bylaws and creating a formal process for issues brought before it before putting any issues on its agenda. The commission subsequently held meetings during which members discussed potential changes to bylaws, a draft work plan and its role in the county. Included in the discussion, and as currently stated in the ordinance establishing the Human n
