Signs placed in the box office windows at the Regal Cinemas movie theater in Placerville notify moviegoers of a temporary closure.

Placerville’s Regal Cinemas closes n Theater may reopen

Christmastime Dawn Hodson Staff writer

The Placerville Regal Cinemas closed Sunday night. A sign posted on the ticket window Monday morning informed unknowing moviegoers

of a temporary closure. The closing had been planned for some time, according to a spokesperson for Regal, but the theater may reopen around Christmas if there are new movie releases. The Regal Cinema outlet in El Dorado Hills remains open but apparently its turn is coming. On Monday Cineworld CEO Mooky Greidinger said all its theaters would close Oct. 8, which includes

536 Regal movie theaters in the United States and 127 Cineworld and Picturehouse locations in the U.K. Cineworld is Regal’s parent company. However, there’ll be no more lining up at the El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce office on Main Street in Placerville, waiting for a chance to be one of the 75 groups or organizations to be chosen to put up a Christmas tree along Highway 50 to brighten up the season. Don’t worry — the trees will still go up, just like they have for decades, with groups putting personal touches on the trees — but to avoid COVID-19 helping

the Grinch to ruin the season, the chamber has switched to a lottery-type system to choose the lucky winners. And if for some reason a group is not among those chosen, don’t fret: This year there also will be seven adoptable trees offered for a donation of $500 per tree. Call the chamber at (530) 621-5885 between Oct. 15 and Oct. 29 to adopt a tree. To enter the lottery, submit an application online between Oct. 15 and Oct. 29. No applications will be accepted in person. The chamber soon will be publishing a link to its website (eldoradocounty.org) to facilitate n
