Last week the Buckeye Union School District launched its hybrid-learning program, sending students back to the classroom on a limited basis and with strict health and social-distancing protocols in place. Republican women’s group seeks a positive voice Sel Richard Staff writer “I can be angry; I can sit around with my girlfriends over drinks and talk about how frustrating this is or I can see if there are other women who are interested and maybe want to get our voices heard,” said Jennifer Yoder, president of the nascent El Dorado Hills Republican Women Federated group.

Begun through a private Facebook post by Yoder in late August, the group burgeoned to more than 916 members in about a month. Although her original plan was to serve El Dorado Hills, it was soon apparent that there was interest throughout the county.

The majority of members are between the ages of 39 to 54 with 54% residing in El Dorado Hills.

The group is now a designated chapter of the California Federation of Republican Women, a 95-year-old state organization. Rita Ferrero, Heidi Hannaman and Kristen Roeder are covice presidents with Robin Le Marquand serving as secretary and Cathy Simko as treasurer.

Yoder cited her main reason for forming the organization lay in education. “I feel like there’s definitely a liberal bent to our schools and I’m seeing that in my own children. That wasn’t sitting well with me,” she said, referring to students who disclosed that they were called out for having a Blue Lives Matter flag behind them while on a Zoom class meeting even though one of the teachers sported a Black Lives Matter emblem on a bulletin board. “I just don’t think that has a place in our kids’ education. I don’t feel like there’s a balanced approach.

“Law and order and education are my two hot buttons,” Yoder continued, going on to express

or patients of Dale Stanec, Jr., DDS, going to the dentist feels a little like going home.

“We know all of our patients.

They’re our friends,” said Dr. Stanec, who works alongside his wife and office manager, Elena, in his Cameron Park office. “The experience in our office is very personal. We’re very small and greet each patient by name when they walk in. It’s a comfortable, homey place to have dental work done, and we like it that way.”

Dr. Stanec has been in dentistry in the Cameron Park area since 2002. As a kid, he was “always into science and math” and loved the idea of owning his own business. “I ran a lawn-mowing business as a kid — always had some kind of business going — so becoming a dentist and owning my own practice just made sense,” said Dr. Stanec. Dr. Stanec did his undergraduate work at Cal Poly,

San Luis Obispo and then attended dental school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He graduated from Northwestern in 2001 and says that, although he was born and raised in San Jose, it was a natural draw to open his practice in the foothills.

“Elena and I love this area. We had a lot of family and friends here and thought it would be a great place to raise our kids.”

In his office, Dr. Stanec offers a full scope of general and cosmetic dentistry with expertise ranging from porcelain veneers and dental implants to crowns and bridges and more. Unlike many other dentists, Dr. Stanec doesn’t employ dental hygienists or other technicians but does all of his dental work himself.

“I spend a lot of one-on-one time with my patients. It’s fun for me to do the work myself because I get to spend more time with my patients and hang out with them and really get to know them. It makes it fun to do what I do,” said Dr. Stanec.

Another advantage of keeping his practice small is that, because he sees every patient one at a time, Dr. Stanec can be very thorough and immediately answer any questions that come up. He is also able to really respect his patients’ time. “I am almost always early or on time,” said Dr. Stanec. “My patients know that, so they’re usually early or on time for their appointments, too. It’s a win win for everyone.”

Dr. Stanec is located at 3955 Cameron Park Drive — in Cameron Park. His office is right near the Goldorado Shopping Center, directly across from the new Walgreens on Palmer Drive, and is very conveniently located for all of his patients. The move is just one more way Dr. Stanec shows his commitment to providing the best possible care for his patients.

New face ready to keep Cameron Park special Jana Rossi Staff writer There’s a new face at the Cameron Park Community Services District office. Jim Mog recently joined the district as the new CC&R compliance officer.

“I am here to understand, help and educate as well as uphold the investment of neighbors in the community,” Mog said. “Our community is unique. I want to take a walk and say hi, build relationships, meet the neighbors and have an open dialogue.”

Mog said he is excited to work for the community he loves. Originally from Southern California, Mog moved to El Dorado County with his parents in 1978. He describes himself as a “proud El Dorado County resident,” attending Buckeye Elementary School, Camerado Springs Middle School and Ponderosa High School.

After graduating Mog decided to join the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office’s Reserve Deputy Sheriff Program.

It was while waiting to get into the

reserves that he detoured into architecture design and ended up at Western Sign Co., where he worked for 28 years. There he developed codes and design guidelines for signs throughout California and all over the world.

Mog said he views his new position as more of an educator and would like to educate the public prior to issuing citations.

“El Dorado County has been my home. I adore it and respect it,” he shared. “I want to keep it a special place.”

Mog replaces Kate Magoolahan, who left the CPCSD to spend more time her family. Magoolahan worked at the district for two years, modernizing the antiquated paper heavy processes by implementing a soft ware program to manage work flow.

“A lot of progress has been made at the district over the last couple of years and I am happy to be a part of bringing the district forward and making good changes,” Magoolahan said. “It was a pleasure to work under Jill and the staff is great. I will miss my coworkers.”

During these times of uncertainty, one thing has been certain — the amount creativity needed to navigate through COVID-19.

Pleasant Grove Middle School in Rescue came up with a creative way to support local businesses while still keeping future fundraising opportunities intact. The school’s PTO used to host traditional Dine Outs, where families head to a designated local restaurant and enjoy a meal. A portion of their purchase then goes back to the group.

“We have been supported by many businesses over the years, including Papa Gianni’s, Los Pinos, Pizza Factory, Fernando’s, Bubba’s, Burger Hut (all in Cameron Park) and even Folsom’s Chick-Fil-A,” PTO President Kris Meyer wrote in a letter to parents.

It looked as though COVID-19 would put an end to those events as the shutdown threatened to close local restaurants for good, but Meyer and Principal Vera Morris came up with a COVID friendly idea — encourage families to pick up dinner. The ingredients for the Reverse Dine Out plan were ready with the first event held at a Cameron Park favorite, Papa Gianni’s.

“Selecting and reaching out to Papa Gianni’s in Cameron Park was a no brainer,” shared Meyer. “The food is delicious, the owners are wonderful and our last actual Dine Out in March 2020 was with Papa Gianni’s right before the shutdown, where they donated a sig-

nificant portion of the proceeds back to our PTO. We are thrilled to give support back to them.”

Pleasant Grove eighth-grade mom Avis Jolly added, “Papa Gianni’s has been a long time and wonderful supporter of the community, including Pleasant Grove Middle School. So when the PTO organized the reverse dine-out we had our take-out order ready to go. It felt good to support a long-time, family owned business and it tasted delicious, as it always does.”

“The Dine Out was much appreciated,” said Papa Gianni’s owner Frank Perri. “We do what we can to give back to the community and we appreciate the support from the community.”

Pleasant Grove has been a consistent supporter of local restaurants since COVID-19 shut down everything in March.

“For Teacher Appreciation Week, last May, PTO purchased $10 gift cards to our local restaurants and distributed them to all of our teachers.

Additionally, we have (used) local restaurants when providing any catered meals to our staff,” shared Morris.

Meyer even contacted a Pleasant Grove mom who has been a strong supporter of the PTO, whose father owns Gordito Burrito near California State University, Sacramento, to have a recent teacher and staff appreciation lunch catered.

“Our local restaurants usually give us so much and we want to help them survive this,” Morris said.

Veterinarian Barnes bids farewell paw-rade style Jana Rossi Staff writer After 45 years of caring for his fourlegged, furry patients, Dr. David Barnes hung up his stethoscope and retired from his practice at Goldorado Animal Hospital in Cameron Park.

“I have mixed feelings,” Barnes shared. “I’ll miss the community and my staff, but especially my clients. I love to see a member of the family brought in that I can treat for cancer or other issues and make them feel better.”

Dr. Barnes saw patients until the end of September but Saturday, Sept. 12, he bid his community farewell outside his office while a parade of cars drove by to see him off. Barnes said his retirement plans will center around his wife and 11 children.

“I want to spend time with them while I’m still young enough to enjoy my family,” he shared.

has many stories to share, he chose one that stood out in his mind about a large German Shepherd. The dog’s owner thought the pup had a stomach full of rocks.

“Why do you think his stomach is full of rocks?” Dr. Barnes said he asked the woman.

“Because I throw rocks for him and it sounds like clanking when he runs.”

Although Barnes said he didn’t hear clanking, and by all accounts the dog appeared to be feeling fine, he took an X-ray. Sure enough, he ended up removing 22 stones, 3.5 pounds of rocks, from the dogs stomach. Lesson learned: “Not everything reads as textbook.”

Dr. Stacy Michaelis and Dr. Megan Miller, taking over the practice, said they are sad to see their mentor leaving.

“We are sad to see him go and appreciate the mentorship. We look forward to continuing to provide the same level of care.”

while Matthew stayed local, graduating from California State University, Sacramento, and then somewhat following in his father’s footsteps — he went to work as a California Highway Patrol dispatcher; his father is a former CHP officer.

Fast-forward to Aug. 2, and life as the Clarks knew it was about to dramatically change. A fun day at Folsom Lake turned tragic for 31-year-old Matt and he found himself on the other end of his dispatcher job, calling in his very own 911 emergency and understanding all too well the ordeal he was now facing. Taken by an air ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, his prognosis was grim — severe spinal cord injury and loss of use of his arms and legs. The one bright spot is that Matt suffered no cognitive issues.

Today, Matt is characterized by the medical community as a quadriplegic but his sister Kate is adamant, “If anyone can get through this, Matt can.”

COVID-19 has added to the Clark family’s grief, as they have been unable to be with Matthew during his darkest days, but they are grateful for the

District 1 Later District 1 Supervisor John Hidahl also addressed the controversial project, explaining that his preference is that the El Dorado Hills Community Services District find a way to acquire some portion of or all of the 98 acres and turn it into a park/recreation facility that fits the community’s needs.

“That would be the ideal solution,” he said.

The incumbent noted that it would be improper to publicly denounce and guarantee a “no vote” on a project that’s making its way through the process while he’s a sitting supervisor. Such a statement could be considered bias, Hidahl said, and that could mean he would have to recuse himself from the vote. “That’s the last thing I want to do.”

Briggs went further in his opposition to Parker’s Central El Dorado Hills Specific Plan proposal. The 341-acre project site with about 1,000 homes proposed encompasses three separate parcels: a section of Serrano’s Village D1, which overlooks the archery range; Ridgeview East across the archery range on the west side of El Dorado Hills Boulevard, also known as Pedregal; and Serrano Westside, the area that includes the old executive golf course.

“Parker doesn’t have a right to come in and just push houses and then ask for more,” Briggs said, adding that housing under construction along Bass Lake Road — a two lane road — should not have been approved.

The former District 4 supervisor, who moved to El Dorado Hills in 2015, instead proposed pushing future housing developments closer to Latrobe, south of Highway 50.

But Hidahl, an El Dorado Hills resident since 1978, noted that growth is important to the community, especially in the areas of workforce and senior housing. He also said he’s “very encouraged” by the mixed-use ideas coming to El Dorado County as such proposals

District 2 without hurting the rural nature so many residents appreciate.

“The problem is, we’re not business friendly,” said Turnboo, a small business owner for 47 years.

One industry El Dorado County needs to revive is logging, according to Turnboo, who suggested a cogeneration plant in the county could be a windfall.

Much can be done to grow the county’s business base, said Pimlott, who advocated better support for the local business parks, especially in El Dorado Hills. But the county has one major hurdle: “We’ve got to invest in infrastructure to attract more businesses.”

That infrastructure includes broadband. With people working from home now more than ever, a strong and reliable internet connection is critical, Turnboo said.

Briggs proposed another solution: “I think we need to stop building houses and flooding the schools.”

Both candidates stressed their complete support for the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement and also agreed that the county needs to do more to prepare residents for and protect property from wildfires.

They also shared that a highlight for both — Briggs during his eight years as the District 4 supervisor and Hidahl with his 30-plus years as a community volunteer on boards and committees — is working with the county’s senior population. Both committed to maintaining and, when possible, improving senior services.

The candidates also advocated better services for El Dorado County’s homeless population. Briggs said he supports programs that address the causes of homelessness — alcoholism, drug abuse, etc. Hidahl said he stands behind the “housing first” model, getting the homeless into stable housing first and then addressing their needs to ensure they don’t end up back on the streets.

He touted the successes of the El Dorado Opportunity Knocks collaboration, confidently saying, “We’re making a difference.”

Much can be done at the local level to ensure El Dorado County does not become the next Paradise, the candidate maintained — supporting the local fire safe councils, pursuing state and federal grants to clean up at-risk properties, working with PG&E to keep power lines clear and continuing to implement the county’s Vegetation Management Ordinance.

Pimlott acknowledged one of the biggest battles for homeowners — maintaining affordable homeowners’ insurance — is a tough road.

Turnboo pitched the idea of El Dorado County becoming self-insured but Pimlott said he’s not interested in creating more bureaucracy, noting that one catastrophic wildfire could bankrupt the county. The 17-year Cameron Park resident instead proposed holding insurance companies’ “feet to the fire” to ensure residents get/keep reasonable coverage.

If adult children were living at home before COVID-19, they are still there and if they were out of the house, they have moved back. Children living at home are keeping Mom and Dad from selling and moving someplace else. A study published in July

by Pew Research Center found 52% of adult children between the ages of 18-29 are living with one or both parents. That’s 26.6 million young adults.

Folks move more frequently in an open, free and prosperous economy and less so under fear, economic stress and mandatory shutdowns. The psychological and prolonged financial effects of a restricted economy and closed schools may turn out to be worse than the virus.

When this pandemic is behind us don’t expect a huge surge in inventory. Sure, the number of available homes will increase but young adults will be slow to move back to the cities, California’s chronic housing shortage will likely get worse and retirees will turn down the active adult community lifestyle in favor of remaining in their own homes and neighborhoods.

The turnover rate of homes has been declining since the 1970s when the average family changed homes about seven times during their lifetime. Before COVID-19 it was down to five and I suspect less in the future.

Remodeling and additions are more economical than selling and buying another home. Americans will also be slow to trade in today’s low-interest mortgage for one likely higher in the future. Living in one home for a longer period will likely become less of a phenomenon and more of the new normal.

Rebecca Endres serves as the Director of Marketing for Kniesel’s Collision, Inc., a family-owned group of automotive body shops with multiple locations throughout the Greater Sacramento area.

Rebecca received a B.A. in Economics from CSU Sacramento, after which she served an insurance claim representative for over 10 years. Entering the collision industry in 2008 as a marketer, Rebecca joined forces with the Kniesel’s team in 2014. In addition to her role with the Kniesel’s organization, Rebecca volunteers as the Secretary for the Shingle Springs/Cameron Park Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Vice Chair for the Placer Food Bank.

Empty Bowls Supper fills need in a new way ers/volunteers as well as hold their stock. It is just about fully opened. Earth Angels’ next goals are to fence the property, build a smoker for the fish and add a number of other crops.

T

he fall tradition of Empty Bowls is here and the Empty Bowls Committee has planned new ways for community members to participate during this pandemic year. The committee hopes to match the $30,000 raised last year.

The Empty Bowls Supper will be held 4-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. John Sanders of Old Town Grill, a wonderful chef and humanitarian extraordinaire, will make a delicious, three-course dinner for Empty Bowls.

Guests can dine al-fresco at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds or take the meal to go.

Menu choices: • Stuffed pork chop with apple almond stuffing served with horseradish mashed potatoes and Fair Market vegetables (or) • Chicken parmesan with penne pasta and Fair Market vegetables (or) • Eggplant parmesan with penne pasta and Fair Market vegetables All meals will start with a field green salad with apples, pears, jicama and feta paired with oregano

The Upper Room Dining Hall in Placerville has been serving 300 meals per day to people in need since COVID19 hit. This is quite an increase, more than double its usual amount.

This includes providing

meals for Project Room Key located at a Pollock Pines motel and housing homeless folks at high risk of COVID-19. The Upper Room is working with the El Dorado Community Foundation and a new nonprofit, Housing El Dorado, to expand its services to develop and operate winter housing for more homeless people in the community.

Bowls will support Earth Angels of Ghana for a second year. Its goal has been to build a farm to feed the needy, while teaching people how to farm. Thanks to Empty Bowls 2019, the organization has just about completed a fish farm with a nursery and hatchery that will grow thousands of fish. The group will host a variety of mini/virtual events along with fundraising appeals. Later in October and November community members will get to see the wonderful music of Achilles Wheel and Coloma Celtic and dance in their homes.

The committee will also revisit prior Empty Bowls events, see how services are provided at the Upper Room and visit Earth Angels in Ghana and the Andean Alliance in the Sacred Valley of Peru. Empty Bowls supported Andean Alliance for four years and will review its work to build greenhouses in the highlands of Peru.

Women offered grants News release Women who serve as the primary earners for their families and seek financial assistance to continue their education or receive training can now apply for the Soroptimist Live Your Dream Education and Training Award for Women.

The Soroptimist Club will provide two cash grants to its award recipients for up to $2,500. The winners will then advance to the Soroptimist Sierra Nevada Region level where recipients could receive up to an additional $5,000.

Recipients can use the Live Your Dream Award to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training.

This includes tuition, books, childcare, carfare or other education-related expenses.
