Training center taking shape

The sounds of hammers striking nails and tractors navigating across dirt pathways are music to El Dorado Hills Deputy Fire Chief Dustin Hall’s ears.

The entire department is celebrating, actually, as construction progresses on the long-awaited re training facility on Golden Center Drive in the El Dorado Hills Business Park, with phase 1 scheduled to open in May 2023.

“We’re de nitely excited about it coming along ... and right on time,” Hall told Village Life.

Phase 1 includes a streetscape with twostory and three-story residential Class “A” live re training structures totaling approximately 10,000 square feet and a 1,600-square-foot

outdoor classroom with storage and bathrooms as well as a water reclamation area plus grading, paving and utilities groundwork for this and future phases.

Hall said the facility has “real-world application” for re ghters in El Dorado Hills. The burn structures are built into the hillsides, creating ascending and

descending challenges, and have staircases, rooms and balconies similar to the community’s homes. Burn rooms

Bryce Bazor’s life, legacy celebrated

Friends and family gathered around the El Dorado Hills rock Thursday night to share memories and to mourn the loss of a life taken much too soon. Eighteenyear-old Bryce Bazor, an Oak Ridge High School student and baseball player, lost his battle with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, Oct. 12. He had been ghting the disease, with the entire community rallied behind him and his family, since his diagnosis in July 2021. Oak Ridge JV baseball coach Wes Clanton addressed the crowd while standing in front of the rock painted in Bryce’s honor. The Oak Ridge baseball team stood by his

Easy access to library thwarted

Some Serrano neighbors are questioning the recent appearance of a sign at the pedestrian gate near the library parking lot denying access across the short strip of dirt that has been trampled by pedestrians.

“It is used by students — grammar school through high school — traveling to school, neighbors walking to the library, the HOA o ces and the hiking trails, as well as people walking their dogs,” nearby resident Craig Daniels told Village Life.

He described his neighborhood as homes of about 25 years old and speculates the gate has existed for most of that time.

Daniels noticed the sign last month, much to his chagrin. “If obeyed, this would require pedestrians to double back to the main entrance of our village and then walk to the library along Silva Valley,” he noted.

Since 2007 Serrano Country Club and Parker Development have enlisted the help of its membership and resources to support First Tee Greater Sacramento.

Over the years they have hosted more than 1,400 kids and teens for various events and raised more than $250,000. In addi tion, high school youth have benefited from equipment donations.

Thanks to their assis tance, they have provided funding to support First Tee Greater Sacramento in four major areas:

• College scholarships awarded to participants who may be the first in the family to attend col lege and who need finan cial support

• “Golferships” that allow kids and teens who otherwise could not afford to participate

• Support of the California Eagles program for individuals with dis abilities

• First Tee School Program for Elementary Schools for kindergarten through sixth-grade stu dents, teaching life skills and basics of golf in their school PE programs.

Currently this includes 11 schools with more than 5,000 local youth.

“This relationship with First Tee has exceeded our expectations,” said Bill Webb, one of Serrano Country Club’s found ing First Tee Committee members. “We started out expecting to raise enough money for a scholarship. We are so proud of the generosity of our members. What

better way to benefit, not only the lives of young people involved but also the community where we live”

Serrano First Tee Committee is one of the club’s committees that report to the board. Through sub-groups, each event is led by one or more of the members and people/financial needs are assigned. A tal ented and creative com mittee along with a very supportive club board and general manager has driven our growth for the last 16 years. With guid ance and support from our Greater Sacramento group, and from Serrano developer Bill Parker, the group has impacted more than 5,500 participants per year.

“At First Tee, we’re building game changers by empowering kids and

Serrano

teens through golf,” said Angie Dixon, execu tive director, First Tee Greater Sacramento. “We are grateful to Serrano Country Club for recog nizing the importance of the First Tee program and its ability to offer benefits by enabling kids to build the strength of charac ter that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges. They have set a wonderful example for other clubs to give back to young people in their community.”

This year the mem bers of Serrano Country Club continue to create pathways and support for First Tee. They are com mitted to raising $82,000 through nine events as well as funding three additional Title 1 elemen tary schools in the Folsom Cordova Unified School District in the fall.

“Year after year, we are seeing the positive impact First Tee has in

“We want to create a training environment that’s as real as possible,” Hall explained. “I think we hit the bullseye.”

The $11.7 million project broke ground in March of this year and construction crews have encountered few hiccups — all easily mitigated and within the budgeted contingency, Hall noted. Funding for the center comes from development fees (75%) and the re department’s general fund (25%).

Hall shared information estimating phase 1 of the project is about 48% complete. Crews have made signi cant progress on the lower levels of each burn structure and the outdoor classroom. Next on the to do list: working on the burn structures’

upper levels, starting to pour the concrete for the streetscape and installing a perimeter fence, among other tasks.

Neighboring re departments are already taking interest, Hall said. When up and running, the facility will be available for re ghter training and likely joint exercises with re departments and law

enforcement agencies. Discussions regarding amenities, including a training tower, in future phases continue, Hall said. The department’s design team is taking a forward-looking approach to what will come next.

“We’re looking for longevity,” Hall stressed. “We only get to build this once.”

with “Rock of Ages.”

Not your typical musical, “Rock of Ages” has been dubbed a rock jukebox musical and features classics from the 1980s that will have the whole audience singing along.

“It’s one of those shows that not many high schools do, but it’s got music that everybody loves,” said Visual and Performing Arts Director Kate Rolls. “Especially with a lot of these kids, it’s music from their parents’ generation ... I think I’m making some parents pretty happy.”

ments, although she told Village Life she had to contend with a faulty lighting system less than a month before opening night. “It’s going to be a little tight but I think it’ll be good,” she said with her trademark optimism, excited to be giving tech students the opportunity to learn.

The band, headed up by musical director Anna Shore, includes students Irma Francis and Milla Pleshakov on guitar.

“We’re de nitely going for that ’80s rock concert vibe. It’s a stage upon a stage,” Rolls said, mentioning a set that will transport viewers back to The Bourbon Room on the Sunset Strip.

Choreography is led by Emily Martorana and costume design by Christine Martorana.

Set in Los Angeles, the show features Sherrie Christian, a small town

girl with visions of becoming a star. She meets Drew Boley at The Bourbon Room, where their dreams collide.

Senior Carmen Martin, who takes on the role of Sherrie, said she feels a kinship with her character. “The fact that she wants to be an actress — I’ve started to realize that I love musical theater and that being an actress could be really fun so I kind of relate to her in that way.”

This is only Martin’s second musical, having dipped her toes in last year’s “Les Misérables” ensemble. “That was my rst musical ever and now I’m a lead,” she said. “It’s crazy but I love it.”

She has plenty of singing experience having sung for four years in choir, but she admitted struggling a bit with the acting portion. “I have a hard time capturing all the emotion that I need to get behind,” she said.

Martin said she loves the theater environment and although she hopes to attend college and major in organic chemistry next year, she plans to minor in a music-related eld. When she’s not singing, you will probably catch her spending time with her family. She is currently rebuilding a motorcycle engine with her dad.

Drew, a barback at The Bourbon Room, wants badly to be a rock star and senior Andrew Hurtt said he can relate. “I’d say I’m kind of similar to him,” he said. “I feel like he has big dreams but he doesn’t really know how to accomplish them and that’s kind of where I feel like I’m at right now.”

This is Hurtt’s rst Oak Ridge production, his foray into musical theater in part due to a shoulder injury that waylaid his lacrosse career.

“Mamma Mia!” opening Nov. 3.

Loge plays Sophie Sheridan, the bright, energetic and emotional bride to be. “My favorite part about my role is the relationships Sophie has with her friends and her mother,” Annabelle shared. “This show perfectly demon strates the mother-daughter relationship and I love being able to act out that relationship.”

This will be Annabelle’s third Ponderosa show but her first as a leading actor.

Tristan Smith plays Harry Bright, a mid-40s English banker, and one of Sophie’s possible dads. Tristan shared, “Harry has actually been a dream of mine since the first time I ever watched ‘Mamma Mia!’ He has a tendency to return to his rebellious teenage years and I really enjoy that about his character.”

Tristan also shared that through his own per sonal experiences, he can relate to how Harry’s

emotions develop throughout the story. “I love to play the role of the stuck-up businessman who still has a heart way down deep inside of (him) and I love to portray how that emotion slowly seeps out of the character over the course of the story.”

This is Tristan’s seventh Ponderosa Stage Productions show and his fourth year of acting and performing. “I have been blessed with the privi lege of playing such an amazing character with an even more amazing director.”

“This is a young, fresh cast, as most of the more seasoned actors have not returned due to the pan demic,” Drama teacher and director Renee Fritz shared. “We are working through the newbie chal lenges and I am excited for opening night. This is one of my favorite musicals.”

“Mamma Mia!” features hit songs from the band ABBA that will bring the audience members to their feet and, for some, bring back carefree mem ories. It doesn’t take a lot of “Money, Money, Money” to see this uplifting and heartwarm ing show. Performances for “Mamma Mia!” are scheduled at 7 p.m. Nov. 3-5 and Nov. 10 & 12 plus 2 p.m. matinées Nov. 5 & 12 at the Ponderosa High School Theater, 3661 Ponderosa Road in Shingle Springs. Big Head Todd and The Monsters ready to make new friends

FOLSOM

— Harris Center for the Arts presents the iconic blues-rock band Big Head Todd and the Monsters performing one night only, Nov. 3.

Big Head Todd and The Monsters have quietly become an American institution following three-anda-half decades of writing, recording and touring (total ing more than 3,500 performances). After countless sold out shows in amphitheaters and on the high seas, beaming their tunes to outer space (literally), earning the endorsement of everyone from Robert Plant to The Denver Broncos and tallying tens of millions of streams, bandmates cite the friendships formed in the crowd among their proudest accomplishments.

Fast forward to 2021 and the Colorado quartet — Todd Park Mohr (vocals, guitar, keys, sax, harmonica), Brian Nevin (drums, percussion), Rob Squires (bass, vocals) and Jeremy Lawton (guitar, keys, vocals, steel guitar) — continue to unite audiences.

“Friendships have spawned because of our band,” said Mohr. “Maybe a bit like the Grateful Dead, the line between audience and stage has over time become a bit blurred and many lifelong friendships have been made in every direction. I’m very proud of that.”

Fittingly, the guys in the band began as friends as well. Mohr and Nevin first crossed paths in high school jazz band circa 1982. Soon, the guys started to jam in Nevin’s basement also joined by Squires. Sweat-soaked house party gigs and talent shows followed until they became a fixture on the bar circuit “before I was even old enough to drink,” laughed Mohr.

Adopting the moniker Big Head Todd and The Monsters, they served up their independent debut “Another Mayberry” in 1989 and “Midnight Radio” in 1990 to critical acclaim, setting the stage for their seminal 1993 breakout “Sister Sweetly.” Powered by staples “Broken Hearted Savior,” “It’s Alright” and “Bittersweet,” it went platinum and the band sup

At the time, Variety hailed Mohr as “a soulful singer and nimble lead guitarist.” While The Los Angeles Times claimed, “Mohr, who has a voice like smoke, writes great songs that incorporates blues, folk, rock and country, which sounds sort of like, well, Big Head Todd and the Monsters.”

fan favorites such as “Strategem” (1994) and “Beautiful World” (1997). The latter yielded the cover of “Boom Boom” (featuring John Lee Hooker), which famously served as the theme to “NCIS: New Orleans.”

In 2005 they exceeded the atmosphere altogether. Friends with connections to NASA encouraged Mohr to write a song, so the group ignited 2005’s “Blue Sky.” In 2011 the band played “Blue Sky” live from the middle of Mission Control to awaken the astro nauts aboard the shuttle. 2017 saw them release “New World Arisin’” to fan adoration and critical acclaim.

The group has notably managed to collaborate or perform with myriad of their heroes over the years, namely Neil Young, B.B. King, Allman Brothers, John Prine, Albert Collins, James Cotton, John Lee Hooker, Hubert Sumlin and dozens more.

“For a half-Asian kid growing up in Littleton, Colo., it’s not likely I would’ve ever ended up being as involved in blues music as I have been,” Mohr observed. “It’s unbelievable we’ve gotten to play and even record with some of my idols.”

In the end, Big Head Todd and The Monsters will never stop bringing crowds together. “If I had any mes sage for our listeners it would just be, ‘Thank you,’” he added. “We’re so fortunate to have lives making music. We’re grateful to be in the situation we’re in and we’re going to continue as long as we can.”

The concert begins at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at Harris Center for the Arts, 10 College Parkway in Folsom. To purchase tickets call (916) 608-6888 or visit HarrisCenter.net.

Rock

Though he has been playing guitar since the fifth grade, he only joined choir last year to fulfill his arts requirement. “I ended up really liking it,” he said, adding he’s singing in choir again this year as well as taking private voice lessons.

Along with enjoying after-school rehearsals, Hurtt is also busy finishing his Eagle Scout project, still plays lacrosse with friends and is looking into possibly performing in Sutter Street Theatre productions. He plans to attend college in an area where he can indulge in his love for skiing and continue dabbling in theater. The role of club owner Dennis Dupree is played by senior Kyle Enriques. “I think my character is similar to me,” Enriques mused. “He’s kind of laid back, a pretty relaxed character.”

This is Enriques’ third production and his biggest role. Enriques credits vocal coach Natalie Fletterick with much of his progress, especially after his voice changed during his sophomore year. “I sing in the car. That’s probably where I got most of my practice,” he said with a grin.

Enriques enjoys the social part of theater the most. “I have fun between scenes hanging out with my friends. We just talk about random things,” he said. “That’s really the whole reason I’m here.”

When he’s not belting out tunes behind the steering wheel, Enriques enjoys walking at the lake with his two dogs and playing disc golf or football with friends. He would ultimately like to explore Christian leader ship as a pastor or missionary.

“Rock of Ages” will play at the Oak Ridge High School Theater, 1120 Harvard Way in El Dorado Hills. Performances are at 7 p.m. Nov. 4 & 5 and Nov. 10-12 with matinees at 2 p.m. on Nov. 5 & 12. Tickets for $10-$20 are available at gofan.co/app/ school/CA22583_2.
