TESTIMONY

The u of dreams — An all-down duvet insert, as show here, is the
comfy bed. But not all down layers are created equal. Don’t skimp.

Down bedding is a shi y business

My friend Bud, who lives around the corner from me in Florida half the year and in his North Carolina cabin the other half, recently texted me with a ba ing problem. Literally, he was ba ed by the lousy ba ing in several down comforters he’d purchased.

Bud knows inferior bedding is a topic I do not take lying down, so he wrote: “I have a possible column topic for you. You may not nd it interesting, but it is to me!”

nothing else? I have a brandnew down comforter.’ So, you get up in the middle of the night and stretch out the d*** comforter and discover 30% of the pockets have no ll.”

AND BEYOND TO HELP US AND ACCOMMODATE THE CONDITIONS OF THE SALE. CAN’T SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS ABOUT HIM, 10 OF 10!” THANK YOU SO MUCH BILL! ~ HANNAH PILLOW

Bud is 80, a widower and skinny. He gets cold at night. So, as winter approaches, he wants a good down comforter.

Who knew down bedding was such a shi y business? He ordered two more colored comforters from Company L. Same problem. Dead spots. He returned them. Determined to gure out what was going on, Bud (a retired attorney who specialized in product liability) called Company L’s comforter manufacturer.

He then shares that because he wraps up in these comforters while watching TV and eating, the white ones aren’t practical. He bought four colored down comforters online at a retailer we’ll call Company C. He returned all four because many of the sewn-in squares meant to keep the pu y down in place were at, as in empty.

“You are sleeping. In the night your legs feel cold,” he explained. “You put a blanket over them and go back to sleep. This happens again the following night. By the third night you say, ‘Wait a minute. Why are my legs cold and

The woman he spoke to blew some u up his shorts about “sewn-in” vs “blown-in” down, claiming sewn-in was better, because the blown-in variety used openings in each compartment to accommodate tube-like blowers and those openings later became escape hatches for down. She insisted the comforters Bud bought had “the preferred” sewn-in down. So why did they still have empty pockets? “She was wrong,” Bud said.

I text Bud back. “If I may, instead of a comforter, why don’t you get a well-

made white down insert and a colored duvet cover that you can remove and wash?” For those who need a refresh, a comforter is one piece; a duvet has two, an outer cover and an insert.

“You may be better at stu ng the down part into the duvet cover than I,” he responds. He’s right. The task can feel like arm wrestling an octopus.

Now curious, I set out to get the lowdown on down and to nd out why some comforters and duvet inserts have at spots. Neither Company C nor Company L returned my call. Next, I called Missy Tannen, founder of Boll & Branch, a leading luxury linen line. Tannen is the only person know who is fussier about bedding than I am. The reason she started her company 10 years ago was because she couldn’t nd sheets she liked. You go, Sister!

A few years later, because customers kept asking what kind of pillows or duvet inserts she recommended, she added down inserts, comforters and pillows to her line. But rst she took a deep dive into down to gure out what made a great product. Here’s what she shared: What is down? Down is that light u y foof found beneath the feathers of ducks and geese. Down keeps the birds warm and regulates their temperature and does the same for us in bedding. Down clusters are three-dimensional spirals, not to be confused with feathers, which are at, provide no lo and poke through fabric and pick.

It’s what’s inside that counts. For premium comfort, Tannen said, you want 100% goose or duck down, no feathers. Read the label and feel the product. If it feels or sounds crunchy, it has feathers. Feathers do have a role in bed pillows as they add structure. “We place feathers at the core and wrap them in layers of down and fabric,” Tannen said. When purchasing down products, also look for ethical sourcing. An IDFL Down Standard symbol means the product meets the international requirements for responsible, traceable sourcing.

Weighing u . Industry insiders measure down by its ll power, which ranges from 500 to 800. The higher the number the warmer and lo ier the covers. Down inserts and comforters come in light, medium and heavier weights. Depending on where you live, whether you sleep hot or cool and whether you change your bedding with the season will determine the best weight for you. For those prone to allergies, synthetic down alternatives are also available and getting better.

The cover up. The fabric that covers the ll also matters. It needs to be tight enough to keep the ll bers in and open enough to let air through. Look for 100% cotton or linen and avoid any synthetic or chemically coated fabric. Stop down migration. Down inserts and comforters keep their down in place by having either sewn-in square compartments or ba e boxes. Sewn-in squares connect the top and bottom layers directly. Each square is lled with down. Because no ll exists at the seams, and down ll peaks at the center of the squares, heat distribution is uneven. Higher-end down comforters and inserts have ba e boxes, a grid-like layer of 1-inch-high fabric walls that slip between and are stitched to top and bottom layers, forming square chambers. Pressure tubes blow down into each chamber in precise amounts distributing it more evenly, eliminating cold spots. Tannen suspects the problem with Bud’s various comforters was due to manufacturer error, not putting enough down in some squares and poor quality control. (Her company puts each item on a lightbox and a scale.) Bud may pay a premium for ba ed bedding, but at least he won’t lose sleep over it.

StatePoint Media News release

o -white/cream as the most popular siding color (18%) if they were going to update the color of their home exterior in 2025 — extending its reign for three consecutive years. Understated elegance continues to dominate the market, with 42% of American homeowners saying they would go for a timeless, neutral look if choosing an exterior home color in 2025.

“The persistent preference for neutral and classic aesthetics like owhite and cream speaks to the palette’s versatility and its ability to enhance curb appeal without overpowering the overall design of a home,” said Ryan Gibson, business director, Vinyl & Composite Cladding.

“These hues are less likely to become outdated or decrease your home’s resale value, making them a smart choice no matter which part of the United States you live in. They also provide a solid foundation for designing a home that allows for a more personal touch, giving accent colors and features space to make a statement.”

Conversely, bold colors are the least likely to be chosen by homeowners. In fact, 33% of American homeowners say one of the colors they would most likely avoid if updating their home exterior in 2025 is red.

“There is certainly a place for bolder colors. They are o en used more prominently in certain architectural styles and

can add a vibrant, eyecatching element when used thoughtfully. The key is to balance it with neutral tones and consider the overall style of the home and neighborhood,” added Gibson.

Breakdown of exterior color preference

A er o -white/cream, white (16%), light brown (13%), light gray (11%) and medium blue (8%) rounded out the top ve color choices among American homeowners, if they were going to update the color of their home exterior in 2025.

Color choice doesn’t stop at siding though. When adding complementary colors to accent home exteriors,

about 62% of American homeowners typically match the trim with their siding color. Other answers include:

• Shutters (43%)

• Porches and decks (38%)

• Roo ng (32%)

When asked how they would choose the exterior color, homeowners cite several key factors. In addition to going for a timeless, neutral look (42%), top answers include:

• Cost (36%)

• Availability (25%)

• Their spouse or signi cant other will pick (22%)

• Based on something they saw in a magazine/ home improvement show (20%)

• Meets HOA/local guidelines (20%)

• Among homeowners, women are more likely than men to say they would go for the timeless, neutral look (48% vs. 37%) or would choose based on something they saw in a magazine/home improvement show (24% vs. 16%). Meanwhile, men are more likely than women to say their spouse or signi cant other will pick (28% vs. 16%).

Breakdown of siding material preference

American homeowners are likely incorporating the trend of embracing warm neutrals into their speci c siding material choices.

Stone (25%) was the leading material preference they would choose when planning to purchase new siding.

Mixed materials were a close second, with 22% of homeowners saying they would choose to mix stone, stucco or siding, perhaps for a

balanced home exterior aesthetic.

Vinyl (14%), vertical board and batten composite cladding (12%) and engineered wood (12%) rounded out the rest of the top ve material choices.
