hether it’s a beautifully colored bowl, an elegant bottle or a charming pumpkin, a hand-blown glass creation can be the perfect home accessory. But why settle for a factory-made piece on a big-box store’s shelf, when El Dorado County is home to the only public hand-blown glass studio in the region? 2BGlass Studio features the incredible works of brothers Tate and Aaron Bezdek, who with the help of Ash Koss have created a one-of-a-kind experience for handblown glass lovers and collectors. Tate began his journey as a glass blower when he took a class at age 17. “I decided right then and there, that’s what I wanted to do,” he said. “I enjoy the speed, the workflow … and the unpredictability.” The El Dorado County native found himself working in a

Cameron Park Community Services District Board of Directors approved improvements to two parks and the Cameron Park Community Center at the Oct. 18 board meeting. Improvements to sports fields at Rasmussen and David West Parks will be made using funding from 2018’s Proposition 68, the Coastal Protection and Outdoor Access for All Act. The motion was made by Board Vice President Monique Scobey and seconded by Director Tim Israel with support from Directors Dawn Wolfson, Eric Aiston and Board President Sidney Bazett. Staff estimates the mostly in-filed improvements will cost $65,000, which is about half of the district’s remaining Prop. 68 funds. The next steps are to update past scope of work and project costs with selected vendor Delta Blue Grass, develop the Prop. 68 grant application, reach an agreement with Ponderosa Little League for the required 20% match and return to the CPCSD Parks and Recreation Committee for consideration, according to the staff report. “Depending upon the timeline for the state’s review of the grant application, improvements could be made before Little League’s season starts Feb. 1,” the report notes. “Mean Girls: High School Version” opens Nov. 3 at the Oak Ridge High School Theater.

‘Mean Girls’ shares not-so-mean message on Oak Ridge stage “Basically it’s a whole school year that the show goes through,” explained El Dorado Musical Theater Director of Community Development Christine Martorana, who is moonlighting as costume designer and has seen three of her own children through Oak Ridge. She must not only account for seasonal changes, but has also color-coordinated each scene. With actors needing anywhere from four to 10 costumes each, Martorana relies on her 20 years of experience in costume design at El Dorado Musical Theatre for her fourth Oak Ridge production. “I have to get creative with thrifting and second-hand stores so that we get the right look for the show.” Oak Ridge senior Melia Porter plays Cady Heron and said she feels a kinship with her character. “She’s innocent about a lot of things and doesn’t know a ton of stuff but she’s ready to learn and I’m kind of like that,” Porter said, also admitting there were times she struggled. “I’m shy and she’s expressive and open, so that was a bit difficult, learning how to present myself like that.” It is Porter’s first lead in a musical and though she has only been performing in ORHS theater for two years, she has been involved in theater and singing her whole life. “I like how musicals express emotions through music. And the dance numbers are fun,” she shared, adding she loves the friendships she has made through theater. “You meet a ton of people that you maybe wouldn’t have

resh off the African savannah, Cady Heron is ill-prepared for the wild savagery of her peculiar new home: a suburban high school. Cady and her outcast friends, Janis Sarkisian and Damian Hubbard, take on The Plastics and learn the hard way that teenage humans can be vicious and ruthless. Oak Ridge High School Drama presents “Mean Girls: High School Version,” the hilarious musical and cautionary tale from book writer Tina Fey, lyricist Nell Benjamin and composer Jeff Richmond. The musical was adapted from Fey’s hit 2004 film, ”Mean Girls.” “I think most people know the story,” said Visual and Performing Arts Director Kate Rolls, who shared her own ‘mean girls’ experience with her students, a middle school wreck of a sleepover. Rolls herself works with the Oak Ridge Link Crew, a program that helps freshmen transition into high school life, and has championed a positive and inclusive campus culture both on and off the stage. “We want people to be who they are and accept others for who they are.” The fall musical sports a 36-member cast, a considerable ask for Oak Ridge’s modest facility. “The biggest challenge has been getting everyone on stage and having the audience be able to see every kid,” Rolls said. In addition, costuming the cast brings its own set of hurdles.

Women share their stories, struggles Noel Stack Managing editor

S

tories of strong, albeit troubled, women told with “wicked wit” and “dark molasses peppered with yellowjackets” is how playwright Charlotte Higgins describes her “Alabama Women.” “And then comes the gut punch.” Directed by Maggie Upton, the show opens at The Stage at Burke Junction Nov. 4. “Alabama Women” gives voice to seven different “incredible Southern women — a lot of them have hardscrabble lives,” Higgins explained. All deal with heavy topics such as poverty, prison and abandonment. “The issues are universal,” the playwright added. “If you tell a story as honestly as you can possibly tell it … it can help but appeal to men (and) women.” And honesty is what Higgins is all about. “There’s one piece where you can almost hear the audience stop breathing,” she shared. Despite heavy themes, Upton chimed in, the audience will find hope and uplifting messages in these stories portrayed on stage. Calling the actresses “brilliant in their interpretations” of her characters, Higgins said she hopes her play starts honest conversations among audience members. “I would like (them) to walk out of the door thinking about it,” she explained. “I don’t want to tell them what to think.” The Stage at Burke Junction Board of Directors Chair Tiffany Roltson noted with a chuckle that she and her husband, after seeing one of Higgins’ plays, got into an argument about their different interpretations. Higgins joked that her plays have caused marital strife for some years now. But theater can also bring people together and that has been true for Higgins and Upton. This is the third time the two have collaborated, with Higgins putting her work into Upton’s capable hands.

Insurance Companies Pay for Treatment of Neuropathy! CALL NOW 530-622-3536

NEUROPATHY IS A PROGRESSIVE CONDITION! DRUG FREE TREATMENT AVAILABLE. ACT NOW We are one of 280 clinics nationwide that specialize in the treatment of neuropathy

What Causes It?

Healthy Nerve Healthy Blood Vessels

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and may also lead to serious balance problems. Diseased Blood Vessels This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet. If not properly treated this lack of blood flow may Nerves Shrivel when cause the nerves to degenerate. Blood Vessels Weak and Disappear As you can see in Figure 1, as the blood vessels surrounding the nerves become diseased they shrink and shrivel. This process hastens the flow of vital Figure 1 nutrients to the nerves required to remain healthy. When these nerves begin to “die” it could lead to balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling and burning symptoms in the hands and feet, and restless leg.

In order to effectively treat your neuropathy 3 factors must be determined. What is the underlying cause?

1

How much nerve damage has been sustained?

2

3

How much treatment will your condition require?

Drug Free Treatment Method

Placerville, CA – Currently the most common method most doctor’s recommend to treat neuropathy is with the use of prescription drugs. Although these drugs may temporarily reduce your symptoms they may cause a feeling of discomfort and in some cases lead to a variety of terrible unwanted side effects. We have a different method!

Our advanced treatment method has 3 main goals

1

Increase Blow flow

2

Stimulate small fiber nerves

3

Decrease brain based pain

The treatment to increase blood flow utilizes a specialized low-level light therapy (not to be confused with laser therapy) using light emitting diode technology. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blow flow. The low level light therapy is like watering a tree. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a tree and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper. The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. “My feet hurt so bad after sitting I could barely take the first few steps. I have had 11 treatments and no longer feel sharp or shooting pains and most of the tingling is gone. I now have full balance and can walk without pain. As Dr. Kinney explained the treatment is not painful, nothing uncomfortable, and is actually very relaxing.” – Neuropathy Pain Patient Dr. Lee Kinney, DC at Premier Healthcare will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $47.

Murder, greed, lust for power overtake Ponderosa theater Jana Rossi Village Life correspondent

S

hakespeare’s “Macbeth” heads to the Ponderosa High School stage Nov. 2-11. Don’t miss one of the playwright’s most famous tragedies that encapsulates all the elements of the dark side of humanity; ambition, greed, betrayal and, of course, murder. After a successful battle,General Macbeth and his comrade Banquo stumble upon three witches, whereupon he is told they had a vision where he would be king of Scotland. Although Macbeth is a noble gentleman, his greed and ambition, along with the relentless persistence of his wife who demands that he take matters into his own hands, lead to the vicious murder of the sitting king, Duncan. This murderous act takes Macbeth down a path of paranoia that leads to insanity and eventually to his demise as he believes more and more of his inner circle must be murdered in order for him to remain king. Meanwhile, Lady Macbeth attempts to contain her husband from looking foolish in front of his subjects and comrades, as he begins to have visits from the grave. In the end, she too caves to the pressures of having a black heart and eventually meets her fate. “What I love about playing Macbeth,” Stephen Owen explained, “is the sheer complexity of his emotions throughout the play.” The actor further explained it’s the little things that make him that much more exciting to play on stage. “His greed and egoism ramps up throughout the play, putting his morality in the backseat, but on the surface that turmoil can be seen weighing him down until the very last scene,” Owen continued. “To put it in the most simple of terms, it’s fun getting to act crazy.” Lady Macbeth is played by Ashlee Quintero and she described her character as a strong, ambitious woman who forces her husband to murder for power. “She is a manipulative woman who is power hungry and wants to rule, but as the play goes on, she becomes crazy and loses all control,” Quintero explained. The role did come with some challenges she told Village Life. “It took me a while to prepare for this character,” she shared. “ It was a challenge for me to play such a wicked villain, but I admire how intimidating Lady Macbeth can be and how I can play into that. It’s been fun making

Macbeth (Stephen Owen) and Lady Macbeth (Ashlee Quintero) are caught in a dangerous game of murder and power in the PHS production of “Macbeth.” this character my own and I am so proud of the character I made. I like how I can act out of my comfort zone. It challenges me to take risks and be proud of those decisions.” Quintero said she credits her mom for the support and motivation she gives to her. Annabelle Loge plays the role of Lady Macduff, the wife of Lord Macduff. Her character is faced with enormous pain as both a mother and a wife. Loge describes her as one of the few good and innocent people in the play. “She represents how women were expected to act at that time, while being resentful of her husband’s actions,” Loge explained. Loge, who regularly performs with Ponderosa Stage Productions, told Village Life, “Performing in a Shakespearean production is unique because there are so many resources to get to know your character as these are famous plays, but you still have a lot of freedom as an actor to add your own ideas into your portrayal of the character.” The most important part of acting in a Shakespearean play, Loge explained, is “understanding the language and what your character is saying so you can know why your character is saying that.” When it comes to creating believable characters, costuming is just as important as the acting. Jennifer Seeley is responsible for creating themed attire for the Ponderosa cast, and when it came to creating a Shakespearean wardrobe, even more thought and research was put into the elaborate costumes. Seeley said she got into making costumes 10 years ago when her oldest daughter became interested in musical theater. Never having used a sew-

ing machine, she said she was determined to learn. “Lots of trial and error, but I got it,” Seeley confessed. “I love making the kid’s costumes and seeing how happy and confident they feel on stage.” Her process when costuming plays usually begins by watching various versions of whatever show is being produced. For “Macbeth” she watched the newer version of “The Tragedy of Macbeth” as well as other high school productions on YouTube. She then searches the internet for ideas and patterns for the costumes before purchasing the fabric. Director Renee Fritz loved the look of the leather basket weave armor in the Denzel Washington version but since that would be too costly, Seeley found faux leather vinyl on clearance and has been hand-making basket weave armor so Fritz can have her vision. “Lady Macbeth’s queen ball gown is really my favorite dress that I have ever made. It’s very regal and a statement piece, and Ashlee wears it beautifully,” she shared. “When shall we three meet again. In thunder, lightning, or in rain?” Head to the Ponderosa theater to see how this talented cast takes on this wonderful Shakespearean masterpiece. For those concerned about whether a Shakespearean play is something they would enjoy, according to “Lady Macduff” the language has been slightly modified to appeal to a wider audience while still retaining the integrity of the original plot and themes of “Macbeth.” Showtimes for “Macbeth” are 7 p.m. Nov. 2-4 and Nov. 9-11 with 2 p.m. matinees Nov. 4 & 11 at PHS, 3661 Ponderosa Road in Shingle Springs. Design work to begin on Pondo interchange update Noel Stack Managing editor Though construction likely won’t begin for at least a decade, El Dorado County is moving ahead with Ponderosa Road interchange improvements. The county Board of Supervisors Oct. 24 approved a three-year, $3.33 million contract with Dokken Engineering for environmental update and design services for two of the projects necessary in the greater Highway 50 Ponderosa Road/South Shingle Road interchange project as outlined in the latest EDC Capital Improvement Program — Durock Road realignment and North Shingle Road realignment. The Durock Road project includes realignment of approximately onequarter mile of Durock Road to South Shingle Road/Sunset Lane and potential widening of the eastbound offramp. The North Shingle Road project

Upgrades requiring land developers to pay fees to help fund parks and recreation projects, will be put toward improvements to the Cameron Park Community Center. Planned enhancements are replacing aged in-pool light fixtures with LED fixtures, upgrading the audio/visual system in assembly hall and replacing

Alabama Women “It’s an invaluable relationship,” Upton shared. Higgins nodded and recalled the first time she handed Upton “her baby,” a play called “Birmingham Blues.” The pair talked and during that conversation Higgins said any worries were swept aside. “She gets it,” Higgins said of the director. “Charlotte is one of the best playwrights around,” Upton declared. The Stage’s board of directors recently named Higgins, an Alabama native who now lives in Placerville, the playwright in residence. In addition to the production of “Alabama Women,” Higgins will facilitate a playwriting workshop for the community before workshopping her newest play, “Rogues,” at the Cameron Park theater. “This takes The Stage to a whole

Mean Girls before and that’s cool.” When she isn’t rehearsing, you might catch Porter baking a batch of her new obsession, tri-berry muffins. She hopes to continue her love of theater after graduation, possibly at a Canadian university. Playing Cady’s friend Janis Sarkisian is senior Annie Spicer. “Janis is really fun. She’s the unexpected nice one,” explained Spicer. “She is so fierce. She has a whole song about being who you are and not conforming to society’s expectations — especially for girls — and I totally resonate with that.” Spicer opened up about her own feelings of being an outsider. “People can identify with Janis, feeling like an outcast, but then she finds this place where she’s super confident in her own self,” she said. “My place is here, definitely in the theater. We are all so loving and accepting toward each other. This is where I feel most at home.” Spicer, too, has performed her whole life, singing at 2 years old and dancing

Glass the brothers attend shows, such as the recent Glass Pumpkin Patch held in Apple Hill and Folsom — Aaron responds, “I can make a pumpkin in 10 minutes, plus seven years of experience.” As the brothers honed their skills in the Bay Area, making the factoryrequired products and then their own creations on their own time, they came to truly appreciate custom glass blowing and shared the dream of one day opening their own studio. Koss joined the duo and helped put words into action. She took their works on the road to weekend shows and events, selling the brothers’ gorgeous custom glassware, bottles, bowls, etc. Over the span of a few years, the trio bought the necessary equipment and tools, first setting up in a barn on the brothers’ mom’s property and then this spring signing the lease to their very own space in Cameron Park that houses both the hot shop and a showroom. They officially move in this September. “We, piece by piece, put this together,” Ash said, explaining they had to learn a lot about setting up a business, getting proper permits, promotion and much more. “We have a lot of pride around that.” Tate and Aaron also have a lot of pride in their work. Everywhere they travel, they visit glass blowing studios to learn and create, taking lessons and advice from the masters such as those in Murano, Italy. “We have really high standards,” Tate explained. “We look at ourselves as craftsmen so when we make stuff we

includes realignment of about one-quarter mile of North Shingle Road to about 600 feet north on Ponderosa Road; realignment of the westbound offramp to align with Wild Chaparral Drive; and potential realignment of the westbound onramp loop. Funding for the contract primarily comes from traffic impact fees with small contributions from the county’s Road Fund and Regional Surface Transportation Program federal funds as granted by Caltrans. Construction is slated for some time between 2033 and 2043, according to the CIP, with the final price tag for Durock Road improvements listed at $11.54 million and North Shingle Road improvements listed at $11.38 million. The supervisors supported the contract 4-1 as part of the consent calendar with District 4 Supervisor Lori Parlin recusing herself due to the proximity of the project with her property.

Continued from A1 assembly room partitions. The motion also unanimously passed. The timelines and dollar amounts for these projects are currently unavailable and will be presented by staff to the board in the coming months, according to interim CPCSD General Manager Jill Ritzman.

Continued from A3 other level,” Rolston said, adding that she and the rest of the board are grateful for the community’s support. The theater has had its most successful year in 2023. Higgins said she’s excited about her first residency “and to be able to work in my own backyard.” Looking around the small theater where soon actors would take the stage for another rehearsal under Upton’s watchful eye, Higgins said with a smile, “I’m having fun.” “Alabama Women” runs Nov. 4-26 at The Stage at Burke Junction, 3300 Coach Lane, Suite E1, Cameron Park. Showtimes are 1 and 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. This play contains mature content. Parental discretion is advised. For tickets and more details call (916) 947-1010 or visit stageatburke.com.

Continued from A2 at 4. However, this production is extra special as Porter and Spicer attended the same preschool and grew up performing together. “It’s awesome to be able to harness all that energy and love for each other into the show.” Spicer said. Spicer teaches dance and plans to study psychology while still nurturing her creative pursuits. “I’ll dance until my body won’t let me and I’ll sing forever,” she vowed. Rolls told Village Life she’s grateful to her creative team, including choreographer Emily Martorana, assistant choreographers Abby Rice and Keira LePage as well as vocal director Natalie Fletterick and assistant vocal director Chris Meissner. See “Mean Girls: High School Version” at the Oak Ridge High School Theater, 1120 Harvard Way in El Dorado Hills with performances at 7 p.m. Nov. 3 & 4 and Nov. 9-11 with matinees at 2 p.m. on Nov. 4 & 11. Placerville ranch has much to offer

E

njoy impeccable views from this beautiful ranch located on a private, secluded hilltop in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The home was built on 19.54 acres in 1979, remodeled and expanded in 1993 and is a large-scale example of a traditional western ranch house with an expansive floor plan, open balcony, hardwood floors, two outdoor dining patios, a gazebo and rustic interior and exterior finishes. Lovely landscaping leads to the home’s custom front door. Entertain guests in the great room, which boasts windows that bathe the space in natural light, a gas log fireplace constructed with fossilized rock, a 22-foot vaulted ceiling and back deck access. Chefs will love the updated kitchen with granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, an eight-burner gas range with hood, dining bar and an abundance of cabinetry plus a pantry cabinet. Adjacent to the kitchen is a formal dining area with a charming chandelier. To the left of the formal dining area there is an office with built in cabinetry. The home has three bedrooms and two full bathrooms downstairs as well as a laundry room with storage and a sink. Upstairs is the primary bedroom featuring high ceilings, a luxury light fixture and sitting area. The side door leads to the private balcony that connects to the bonus room above the detached garage, which could be used as a home gym, art studio or hobby/craft space. The suite’s bathroom offers

relaxation in the jetted tub and also has a stall shower and dual sinks plus access to the spacious walk-in closet. In addition to the main house, the property includes a three-stall barn (renovated in 2010) with a tack room and second story storage. The acreage has two to three additional building sites, a fenced corral, acreage for vineyards or other crops and fenced pastures and garden. The ranch’s other permanent fixtures include three 500-gallon propane tanks, a commercial-grade propane generator and a 1,500-gallon below-ground, cement water storage tank and its own well. The property is self-sustainable and can operate independent of the grid in an emergency for several weeks or indefinitely with adequate propane gas supply. The property’s hilltop location provides spectacular views of sunsets over the Sacramento Valley horizon in the west and sunrises over the Sierra Nevada to the east. Its elevation of approximately 2,300 feet provides the ideal climate necessary to support a variety of commercial crops, vineyards or livestock and an abundance of trees. From the deck, watch the local wildlife. The area was inhabited by Native Americans into the 19th century and the occasional arrowhead, cooking utensil or grinding rock can still be found. The property has a small creek and a dam reputedly built by Chinese immigrant miners during the Gold Rush. Interested in a tour of this High Lonesome Trail property in Placerville? A dentistry that aims to be a home away from home

or patients of Dale Stanec, Jr., DDS, going to the dentist feels a little like going home.

“We know all of our patients. They’re our friends,” said Dr. Stanec, who works alongside his wife and office manager, Elena, in his Cameron Park office. “The experience in our office is very personal. We’re very small and greet each patient by name when they walk in. It’s a comfortable, homey place to have dental work done, and we like it that way.” Dr. Stanec has been in dentistry in the Cameron Park area since 2002. As a kid, he was “always into science and math” and loved the idea of owning his own business. “I ran a lawn-mowing business as a kid — always had some kind of business going — so becoming a dentist and owning my own practice just made sense,” said Dr. Stanec. Dr. Stanec did his undergraduate work at Cal Poly,

San Luis Obispo and then attended dental school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He graduated from Northwestern in 2001 and says that, although he was born and raised in San Jose, it was a natural draw to open his practice in the foothills. “Elena and I love this area. We had a lot of family and friends here and thought it would be a great place to raise our kids.” In his office, Dr. Stanec offers a full scope of general and cosmetic dentistry with expertise ranging from porcelain veneers and dental implants to crowns and bridges and more. Unlike many other dentists, Dr. Stanec doesn’t employ dental hygienists or other technicians but does all of his dental work himself. “I spend a lot of one-on-one time with my patients. It’s fun for me to do the work myself because I get to spend more time with my patients and hang out with them and really get to know them. It makes it fun to do what I do,” said Dr. Stanec.

Another advantage of keeping his practice small is that, because he sees every patient one at a time, Dr. Stanec can be very thorough and immediately answer any questions that come up. He is also able to really respect his patients’ time. “I am almost always early or on time,” said Dr. Stanec. “My patients know that, so they’re usually early or on time for their appointments, too. It’s a win win for everyone.” Dr. Stanec is located at 3955 Cameron Park Drive — in Cameron Park. His office is right near the Goldorado Shopping Center, directly across from the new Walgreens on Palmer Drive, and is very conveniently located for all of his patients. The move is just one more way Dr. Stanec shows his commitment to providing the best possible care for his patients.

Elena, Luis, Dale and Dr Stanec.

“I love the work that I do and am proud to do really quality work. Originally I’d planned to be a little bigger, but then I realized I liked it this way. I really enjoy my patients and

“I look forward to going to work and getting to see who’s on the schedule every day,” said Dr. Stanec.

this way I can get to know them well.” For more information or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Stanec, visit drstanec.com or call 530-676-6500.

After 2023 the $100,000 limit will be indexed to inflation. Of course, before you start either a Roth IRA conversion or a qualified charitable distribution you will need to consult with your tax advisor, as both these moves have issues you must consider and may not be appropriate for your situation. But it’s always a good idea to know as much as you can about the various aspects of RMDs — they could play a big part in your retirement income strategy. oy Scouts Drake Montgomery and Devan Lindholm from Troop 454 in El Dorado Hills teamed up with the El Dorado County German Shepherd Rescue to complete their Eagle Scout community service projects. The El Dorado County German Shepherd Rescue is a nonprofit in Shingle Springs that pulls at-risk GSDs/ mixes from local shelters. The organization works to train and rehabilitate these dogs in preparation for their forever families. Drake’s Eagle Scout service project was to update and make the eight kennels safer for the dogs and easier for other volunteers to keep clean. After many hours of planning and materials preparation, Drake managed a group of his fellow Scouts over two full workdays as they installed plywood on the ceiling and fabricated and welded metal fencing that replaced the worn-out fence between the kennels. In total, Drake spent more than 150 hours on this Eagle project. Devan’s Eagle Scout service project was to construct and install two confidence suspension bridges in the dog exercise yard. Both bridges attach to removable metal columns with steel cables that allow the bridges to move as the dogs walk across them, which increases a dog’s confidence. Devan spent more than 200 hours planning, managing other Scouts and constructing and installing the bridges. Both Drake and Devan funded their
