Park plans move forward Eric Jaramishian Staff writer Diamond Springs is one step closer to getting a 40-acre sports park. After nearly two years of community and countyheld meetings, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors approved the project’s environmental impact report Dec. 12, allowing staff to move forward with construction. Located at 3447 Clemenger Drive, adjacent to Union Mine High School, the park would consist of sports fields, courts, a gymnasium and walking trails. During last week’s Board of Supervisors meeting, a possibility previously undiscussed came up during discussion of the final EIR — a community center for countywide emergency purposes. Recognizing a need for such a facility, Steve Peterson of consultant company Kimley Horn told the board the idea of a community center came about after the Caldor and Mosquito fires forced evacuations for El Dorado County residents who were placed at various parks and other community centers not uniquely purposed for refugees. “That’s something that really informed our process as we went forward after the catastrophic fires that happened a couple of years ago, and the way that Henningsen Lotus Park really turned into a refuge for a lot of folks as well as other parks,” Peterson said. Such a center would be better outfitted and include showers, laundry, toilets and camping space for evacuees. “We wanted to keep that in mind and wanted to have the infrastructure in place at this park and I think all parks in the future should be designed to where our parking lots have the infrastructure facilities available just in case,” said Vickie Sanders, the county’s parks manager. El Dorado County sheriff ’s Lt. Troy Morton noted the area’s central location in the county would be beneficial during emergencies. “We think it would be beneficial to have a county facility to start out with where we can send people for evacuations,” Morton said. For regular park purposes plans include soccer and baseball/softball fields; basketball, tennis and pickleball courts; and a children’s play area. Downtown Placerville has a little extra holiday glow in 2023 with a Christmas tree set up for the first time next to the Bell Tower. The tree is a redwood from the Sierra Pacific Industries’ Camino Mill site selected to stand in for the traditionally used coastal redwood at the corner of Main Street and Bedford Avenue that was damaged in the heavy storms of winter 2022-23. Placerville-based photographer Paul Cockrell captured this photograph of the tree and Bell Tower in the early hours of Dec. 7, when there are no cars on the streets.

Cameron Park Rotary once again partnered with Folsom State Prison to fix up old bikes like new to be given to youth in the region. Through the work of Cameron Park Rotarians, spearheaded by Joe Ryan, bikes and bike parts are collected throughout the year then sent to Folsom Prison to be refurbished by those incarcerated — a program that began in 1986. On Dec. 19 some 165 bikes were rolled out in front of Folsom Prison for pick up. Inmates Charles Nix and Art Hernandez have been busy in the prison’s bike workshop getting the two-
