extensive protocols in place to limit transmission of the coronavirus.

Enterprise staff writer The first UC Davis students began moving into on-campus housing this week with 600 students moving into The Green, a brand-new apartment complex in West Village on the UC Davis campus. The move-in process is also new this year — gone are the days of jammed parking lots and crowded elevators — with

Each student was assigned a specific move-in time, with the appointments staggered throughout the week to avoid crowding and enable physical distancing. Students were given one-hour move-in slots and allowed to bring just one additional person into the building to help them move.

Before moving in, students were required to get screened for COVID-19. Under the supervision of medical staff from Student Health and Counseling Services, a saliva sample and a nasal swab were collected from each student at a kiosk set up in The Pavilion parking garage on campus. The testing process was estimated to take 10-15 minutes per resident, with results communicated to students within 24-48 hours. The saliva samples were sent to the UC Davis Genome

Center and are being processed on campus using a new highthroughput testing system, while the nasal swabs are being sent to labs off campus. “Student residents should expect to be tested on at least a weekly basis through fall quarter,” UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May said last week in a public statement. “During the pilot, we will use nasal swab tests as a backup, for analysis off campus.”

City adds more bike lockers at train station BY ANNE TERNUS-BELLAMY Enterprise staff writer The city has added 12 more BikeLink lockers at the Davis Depot. The new lockers provide secure parking for bikes up to 84 inches long, serving many of the longer-style bicycles, according to the city. The twostory lockers feature a lift-assist so bicycles can easily be lifted into and out of the lockers. The Davis Depot also has 24 single-story bike lockers on the west side of the station. To use a BikeLink locker, first purchase a BikeLink card at the train station counter or at bike link.org. The cost to store a bike is five cents per hour. And while parking a bike in a bike locker is more secure than parking in a bike rack — and

bike parking to our residents and visitors,” said Mayor Gloria Partida. Jennifer Donofrio, the city’s bike and pedestrian coordinator, encouraged residents to use the bike lockers when possible because they are a safe place to park your bike and ensure it will be there when you come back. However, if you decide to park at a free bike rack, Donofrio recommended locking the frame and wheels. She also recommended using security bolts and removing all quick-releases, typically located on the seat post and wheels. Remember also to remove all valuables when leaving your bike. Davis City Council members on Tuesday night directed city staff to work with city commissioners and the community at large to craft a revised leaf-blower ordinance that would likely include a ban on gaspowered blowers. But while such an ordinance wouldn’t be ready for council consideration until possibly early 2021, city staff will return as early as next week with an emergency measure banning the use of all blowers until Oct. 31. The urgency ordinance is aimed a reducing emissions and dust during a period when air quality from wildfires has been unhealthy for days on end. And while the air quality on Wednesday morning was the best it has been in Davis in some time, the assumption is that will change with more fires and more bad air predicted through the end of fire season. The ban on all leaf blowers during that period would be subject to extension or early termination based on ongoing air quality readings, with an AQI of 100 being the benchmark city staff would consider. The city’s Natural Resources Commission had recommended such a short-term ban on gas-powered leaf blowers in order to avoid exacerbating air quality conditions.
