Out on the town Former Blue Devil adds to Sac dining vibe By Aaron Geerts Enterprise staff writer Davis High School alumnus David English has rejoined the Sacramento restaurant scene with Juju Kitchen And Cocktails at 1501 L St. Although this restaurant and lounge is across the causeway, its recent opening might not have been possible without the lifetime of support English received from his home town. A 1990 graduate of DHS, English’s culinary career has taken him around the world. Traveling from Spain to France to New Orleans, English’s experience is a melting pot of cultural and culinary nuance. Eventually, English moved back to Northern California and opened his first restaurant, The Press, in Sacramento in 2010. “I had the opportunity to travel to different places and learned how to cook different styles of food. I think it was all leading up to having my own place, so opening up The Press

was a culmination of all those years of learning and cooking,” English said. “We’re real proud of how that went, but one thing we saw was that while people wanted great food and drinks, they really started to use restaurants as a place just to meet up or get together. Some people just wanted drinks, some people just wanted small bites and we thought, ‘how can we put out a venue where people can come and enjoy themselves in any way they want with the food and cocktails as that base?’” Seeing a shift in costs and trends, English decided to close The Press on New Year’s Eve of 2019. After dodging a pandemic, English’s renewed zeal for appeal led to the opening of Juju on June 1 of this year. “We’re leaving it up to people to what they want to do. People can come and get a full dinner with a bottle of wine or just have some drinks. It’s a little more flexible as opposed to a restaurant that has a $40 entrée where you have to spend to get in,” English said. “It’s in a beautiful space, and I think it’s a blend of sophistication but also fun and laid

City ordinance requires safe storage of guns

UCD study sounds alarm on political violence A new study by the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program alarmed researchers as it revealed support for political violence, authoritarianism and right-wing conspiracy theory. On Wednesday, its findings, including that one in five Americans thought political violence was justifiable, made national headlines. “We expected the

Davis City Council members indicated Tuesday that they prefer calling a special election in May to fill the council seat being vacated by Mayor Lucas Frerichs, rather than appointing a replacement. Frerichs, who was elected to the Yolo County Board of Supervisors last month, will be stepping down from the council, where he represents District 3, at the end of the year to assume his new position. Some community members have criticized his decision to not step down earlier so voters in District 3 could choose his replacement during the upcoming November election, which would have saved money (city staff estimate the cost of a special election at between $80,000 and $130,000) and ensured no prolonged vacancy on the council. But the deadline for placing a council election on the November ballot has now passed and Frerichs’s colleagues on Tuesday defended his decision to remain on the council through December. “Lucas has been elected citywide twice, then elected overwhelming by the voters of City Council District 3

With several members citing their own personal experiences related to gun violence, the Davis City Council voted unanimously Tuesday evening to enact a safe-storage ordinance for the city of Davis. Under the ordinance, residents who keep firearms in their homes must either store the firearms in locked containers or secure them with a locking device when they are not in close proximity to the guns. Davis Police Chief

Darren Pytel said his department has 200 locks that it will be giving away free at the July 30 Farmers Market and he has ordered another 1,000 free locks to give away. In addition to requiring safe storage in the home, the new city ordinance also requires that all firearms — including shotguns and rifles — be safely stored in vehicles, in a locked container in a locked trunk or, for vehicles lacking a trunk, in a locked container permanently affixed to the vehicle and out of view.
