Driveways are oft-overlooked components of home exteriors. But driveways provide functionality and points of egress to a home. Industry experts estimate that a new driveway costs between $5,000 and $7,000 though the price will vary based on the materials homeowners choose and the square footage of the driveway.
When deciding whether or not to renovate their driveways, homeowners can review these considerations.
Driveways can be made from a variety of materials, even grass or soil. The following are some driveway materials homeowners may choose from:
• Gravel
• Chip seal
• Concrete
• Asphalt
• Rubber
• Exposed aggregate
• Pavers
• Permeable pavers
• Heated
Nearly any size crack can be patched with concrete or coldpatch asphalt, or specialty materials, according to This Old House, an online home improvement resource. Repairing and resealing a driveway can help prolong its longevity. Plus, this is a more cost-effective option for homeowners on a budget who want to improve curb appeal and safety.
Large holes or unsightly damage may require a driveway replacement. This also will be the case if a homeowner hopes to expand the driveway. Replacing a driveway requires a time
commitment. The existing driveway needs to be demolished and removed. The ground underneath typically is smoothed and tamped down. Substrate or wire mesh also may be installed. After the new material is laid, there may be a period of time for settling and curing, during which use of the driveway is prohibited.
While sealing and minor repairs generally can be handled by a homeowner who
has researched the process, large repairs or driveway replacements should be left to professionals for the best results. Driveway slope needs to be considered for proper rain runoff, and the professional will understand the thickness and preparatory steps necessary to ensure driveway durability. Installation of a heated driveways requires a specific skill set and this is a job best left to professional driveway contractors.
The options do not end with the driveway material. There are other ways to boost aesthetics.
•Illumination:
Homeowners can install recessed LED lights into the driveway to define the edges and add aesthetic appeal.
•Stamped texture:
Homeowners opting for the affordability of concrete can ask for a stamped design that mimics the look of stone or
pavers.
•Gates:
One doesn’t have to live in an exclusive community to have their property enhanced by gates. Gates can give a home a distinguished look.
• Edging:
Driveways can be edged with another material to create definition between the driveway and lawn, or to provide the perfect spots to plant beds.

Q: Many years ago we bought the house of our dreams. Last year our neighbor, whose drive way runs right along our property line, bought the biggest motorhome I ever seen. He parks it along the entire length of his driveway and completely blocks our view of the block and, most importantly, almost all the sun light from our house until at least noon. There must be some law that doesn ruin another neighbor’s enjoy ment of their house?
Tim Jonesin their house at night. Now, if you give me a moment to explain how my cynical brain works, I think that what is or is not restricted often has more to do with politics than practicality.
What is the lesser of two evils often honestly comes down to someone’s personal belief on the subject.
A city councilwoman who hates dogs would be far more likely to vote to ban barking dogs than would a fellow councilman who owns two of them.
road someday in their own mobile castle, enjoying the freedom that has eluded them thus far in life.
Plus, the largest contributors to their campaigns are successful people of similar age who are all affluent enough to enter the “my motorhome is bigger than yours” contest.
You can see why, from a practical perspective, it’s an uphill battle to ban the motorhome.
However, it’s not without precedent.
A: Well, there are laws that do exactly that, but not nearly to the extent readers may think.
For example; most cities have local ordinances that prohibit loud parties late into the night, but have no such laws regarding dogs barking at the same hour.
Law-school professors will tell you such laws are an attempt to balance the rights of one owner against the rights of the other.
In my example, the loud party can be limited in time because it’s a one-time event. A dog is recognized as a somewhat uncontrollable creature that many homeowners live with every day. Plus, we have a sense that late-night noisy parties just aren’t of high societal value when compared to the ability of someone to sleep
To paraphrase Mark Twain, “Which side of the fence you stand on has a lot to do with which side of the fence
And that is the essence of politics.
In your case, you are fighting a person’s right to travel. To explore the world. To experience the freedom of the road. And why? So his property doesn’t cast a morning shadow on yours?
OK, I’m being theatrical here, but only to make a point.
City leaders tend to be older, more mature persons whose children have been raised and for whom retirement is either here or just around the corner (unless they’re self-employed, but that’s another issue). A fair number of them see themselves rumbling down the
Most communities with homeowners associations and C,C&R’s restrict the ability of owners to park recreational vehicles in front of their house.
If you live in such a community than the discussion changes to how you enforce your rights in this matter.
But for other homeowners who are having to live with the imposition of a neighbor doing just what you’ve described, I’m afraid the only solution is to direct your concerns to your political leadership.
So to answer your question directly, I’m afraid there’s just not much you can do about it.

My mom and dad raised 7 of us in the Sunset District of San Francisco. In 1970, my folks had been renting a 2-bedroom flat for 8 years, a flat is what we call a duplex in the city. We lived in the downstairs flat
above the garage and over the 8 years, my grandma and grandpa rented upstairs for the first few years till they bought a house in Foster City in 1967 and then a mellow hippie couple from Haight Ashbury moved in up above us. My
parents had 4 boys in a row till my sister was born in 1969. My mom and dad gave Suzanne their bedroom, moved to the fold-out couch in the living room and my three brothers and I shared bunk beds in our room. The hippies must have smoked a lot of Columbian Gold weed upstairs because I do not
remember them being bothered by our constant loud noise downstairs. In 1970, my parents bought a 1700 square foot 3-bedroom house around the corner from our flat for $32,500 with a $3000 loan from my grandpa because my mom and dad had very little savings for the down payment which is
almost always the problem for first time homebuyers. Their house payment was $100 more per month than the rent they were paying, and my dad was scared to death, but I guess he wanted to have more kids and the fold-out couch was

cramping his goals, so they pulled the trigger and bought the house. My dad took on a 2nd full time job in 1970 and by 1974 had boy #5 and girl #2. We were never rich, but we had a very good life and I believe one of the reasons was the stability of home ownership along with my parents staying together through thick and thin. Children need a stable home and loving parents. Many first-time homebuyers today do not have
parents or grandparents with money to assist with a down payment. Thankfully, we have a fantastic down payment assistance program available today for first time homebuyers with FICO scores above 640 and household income below $215,000. This solves the down payment problem for our children and our grandkids and for those of you that have kids renting because of their FICO scores, get their butts moving on a FICO score improvement and financial coaching program with a quality local lender or financial advisor. My team just closed a CALHFA loan for a
couple and their 3 kids, that only 8 months ago, had a 582 FICO score and no hope, and now the 3 kids have a nice back yard to play in 4 blocks from their school.
