Choose a Funeral Home

After the death of a loved one, choosing a funeral home for services and memo rials prior to burial is the next step in honoring a life. Some times it can be a hasty deci sion made during a confusing time. But it’s worth the time and effort to survey funeral homes in your area and take account of the services and prices before making a selection.

People often select a funeral home because it’s nearby or has been recommended by someone they trust. But by limiting the search to just one funeral home, you may risk paying more than necessary for the funeral and any additional goods or services offered.

Here are some tips to help make choosing the right funeral home less stressful.

COMPARE PRICES

If you have had to make funeral arrangements in the past, you may be tempted to just go with the funeral home you have experience with. While this may be a smart option for some people, it’s not always the right option.

Depending on how long it’s been since you needed to make funeral arrangements for a loved one, the price of that particular funeral home may have gone up. That’s why it is wise to shop around and compare the prices of the various funeral homes in your community.

ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS

Even if you have never had to choose a funeral home in the past,

you may have a friend or two who has. Ask these friends if they would recommend the services provided at the funeral homes they have used.

They may be able to share valuable information about the staff, facility and prices of a specific funeral home.

ASK ABOUT PACKAGES

Whether your deceased loved one had a specific list for their final wishes or you have to make these decisions for yourself, it is important that you ask a potential funeral home what types of packages they offer.

You will find that not all funeral

homes are created equal, and each offers their own different ways of handling a service. No matter what type of requirements you have, it is best to choose a funeral home that will cater to your specific needs in order to make this difficult situation a little less daunting.

CARING STAFF

When visiting a potential funeral home, the funeral director can be a major deciding factor when you choose whether or not to use this particular company to handle the funeral of your loved one.

A caring and professional funeral director and staff will take the time to explain all your options

in an empathetic way so you can make a better choice when choosing a funeral home.

If the director seems short or uninterested in your needs or makes you feel like you and your deceased loved one aren’t important, you won’t want to choose this facility to handle the funeral of your loved one.

While dealing with the death of a loved one is hard, choosing the right funeral home can help relieve you of some stress.

If you want your loved one to receive the proper funeral he or she deserves, following the above listed tips should help you make the right choice.

Choose a Running Shoe Store

Finding the perfect pair of running shoes can elevate your running experience, contribute to your performance and protect you from injury. Here’s what to consider when making that all-important choice.

THOROUGH FITTING PROCESS

Fit is paramount in running shoes. Shoes that are too tight, too loose or just uncomfortable can hinder your performance and even lead to injuries.

A thorough fitting process, which includes measuring the length, width and arch of your feet, can ensure a proper fit. Also, remember that your feet swell during a run, and speaking with an experienced outfitter will ensure you find the perfect fit and speak ing with an experienced outfitter will ensure you find the perfect fit.

The best shoe retailers will have high-tech solutions to help you find the perfect fit for different foot types and body mechanics.

KNOWLEDGEABLE STAFF

Running shoe selection is a science. Having knowledgeable staff who understand the biomechanics of running and the nuances of different shoe models can make a difference.

They can guide you in finding the right shoes and equipment to meet your running goals, whether you’re a seasoned marathon runner or a beginner hitting the track for the first time.

SHOES FOR DIFFERENT RUNNERS

Running shoes are not one-sizefits-all. They’re designed to achieve

a specific purpose for different types of runners. For instance, neutral shoes work for runners with a natural gait, while stability shoes benefit overpronators who tend to roll their feet inward.

Shoes also vary based on the running surface, from road running shoes designed for pavement to trail running shoes built for off-road routes.

LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN

A heavy shoe can drag you down and sap your energy. Look for shoes that are light enough to maintain your pace, yet sturdy enough to provide adequate support and protection.

Lightweight materials have evolved dramatically in recent years, offering a balance of durability and minimal weight.

CUSHIONING

Good cushioning absorbs the impact on your joints as your foot hits the ground. The amount of cushioning you need depends on your running style and personal preference.

Some runners prefer a minimal feel, while others require more cushion for longer runs or hard surfaces. Be sure to test the shoe’s cushioning during the fitting process to ensure it matches your comfort level.

ECO-FRIENDLY MATERIALS

Increasingly, runners are looking for shoes that don’t harm the environment. Many brands are stepping up their game, offering shoes made from recycled or sustainable materials.

Buying eco-friendly shoes not only minimizes your environmental footprint but also supports companies that prioritize sustainability.

CONCLUSION

Choosing the right running shoes is a crucial step in your running journey. A thorough fitting process, knowledgeable staff, shoes designed for your running style, lightweight construction, adequate cushioning and eco-friendly materials are all important factors to consider.

Take the time to try different models and ask for advice, all while getting an outfitting experience unique to you. Your feet – and your running performance – will thank you.

Sell Your Home in a Price-Sensitive Market

The housing market is in a state of constant flux. In the years following the pandemic, there was a seller’s market with house’s flying off the market at higher-than-normal prices because existing home inventories were low and new construction was slowed by supply chain issues.

Sellers in this market were able to demand prices far higher than market value. However, the pendulum always shifts and changing economic conditions can cause the bottom to fall out of the housing market.

Rarely, though, do people make decisions about selling their home purely on financial factors. Deciding when to put your home on the market is driven by reasons other than market considerations. Maybe you need to move for a new job or have limited time to make a deal on your dream home.

When the market slows down and you still have to sell your home, you might be faced with some challenges.

Here are a few pointers for making the sale in a price-sensitive market:

BANG FOR THE BUCK

When preparing your home to sell, do not overspend on renovations.

Keep renovations simple. Talk to a real estate agent or research online about what your local market will support. Will you be able to get your money back or profit from a kitchen renovation? If not, you may want to just add a fresh coat of paint to update the room. It will keep your costs down and make it easier to price your home competitively.

A minor home makeover will not break the bank. Painting a room, de-cluttering the interior, neatly trimming the lawn and putting fresh mulch in the flower beds can make a big difference.

Of course, every community is

different. When in doubt, consult your real estate agent for advice on where to best spend your money to get the most value out of your home.

PRICE IT RIGHT

The right asking price is another essential step toward selling your home.

It is a big mistake to assume that you should ask for a high price in the beginning. Your home will get the most interest in the first few weeks it’s on the market. When people see your home first appear in the listings, or neighbors see the “for sale” sign in your yard, that’s when people will be talking about your home.

Starting with a sales price that’s too high – even slightly so – will discourage potential buyers. They

might think you are asking too much for your home. It is better to start with a realistic, fair market price. It is the best way to make a quick sale.

ONLINE VIEWS

Clever sellers are starting to price their homes in a way that will get the most views online.

For example, if you are thinking of asking $255,000, that might put it out of range for people who see “up to $250,000” as a search option on a website or mobile app.

When pricing your home, look for common categories in real estate search engines. Think of a price that will cause your house to come up the most in search results.

LISTEN CLOSELY

Perhaps the most important step of all is finding a great real estate agent.

These professionals are your most valuable tool when selling your home. The best agents will have knowledge and expertise about the local market and how to get your home sold for a great price. Listen closely to their advice and follow it precisely.

After all, in a price-sensitive market, an experienced real estate agent’s suggestions can be worth more than gold.

Choose a Venue

When you’re plan ning the perfect event, high on your list of jobs is to find the perfect location, a space that will accommo date everyone you want to invite and all the activities you want to take place.

Whether it’s a wedding or an office party, the details involved in choosing an appropriate venue for a specific event can be overwhelm ing. You must consider everything from service to parking, music to tips and cleanup.

It helps to define your event, make a list and then evaluate your options.

Here are some things to think about if you’re considering finding an event venue.

LESS STRESS

Event planning is stressful. You will need a venue that lowers your anxiety level before and during the event.

This is especially true of weddings. Whether you or a friend is getting married, you will need an experienced venue staff. The employees should treat you and

your guests with respect and grace.

Venues can be very helpful with event planning. Top-quality venues regularly do business with many vendors. They can give you advice on finding other vendors in your area. They might be able to assist you in the planning phase, which can help you relax as you plan for the big day.

CALL THE SHOTS

On the other hand, you should control the entire process. Be sure the details are meeting your expectations.

When you feel a venue is pressuring you or even making decisions without your consent, end the relationship. You need people who will work with you, not people who only consider what is easiest for them.

The theme, style and decor of the event should be your choice. Leave the smaller details to the venue’s staff and management. Doing so will free you to focus on important aspects of the occasion.

Services

Every venue is different when it comes to services. Some places

offer hardly any services, while others help you set up and clean up. Placing tables and chairs is time-consuming. Taking down decorations and equipment afterward can put a sour ending on a fabulous day.

Read your contract carefully. Unless you are on a very tight budget, look for a full-service venue that will set up and tear down as part of their pricing package.

TECHNICAL NEEDS

Your event might require special technical needs.

For example, sound and lighting is vital for a musical event. The venue should have the right electrical and audio connections, as well as places to route and hide cables safely.

Weddings can also be a technical challenge. The band or DJ will need to have clear sound and a dance floor. Wedding photographers might have preferences about where backdrops and special lighting will be placed.

The best venues can help you have a successful, stress-free event. Finding the right place to experience your special occasion will be memorable for you and your guests.

Choose a Better Burger

The 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Mis souri, is credited with giving America its first widespread exposure to the hamburger. That time’s idea of going viral.

When the modest modern day burger first hit the flame is some what in dispute.

1885: In Seymour Fair, Wiscon sin “Hamburger Charlie” squished a beef meatball between two slices of bread so his customers could enjoy it while walking around. That same year the Menches brothers ran out of pork sausage during the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, New York. Sourcing ground beef from a local butcher, they seasoned it with coffee among other things and coincidentally served it between sliced bread. Legend has it that Louis Lassen of New Haven, Connecticut, was the first to recklessly combine a beef patty, cheese and condiments between the ubiquitous two slices in 1900. Visionaries all, and we thank the Culinary Gods for them. The origin may be in question, but the burger’s timeless longevity is not. Though the modern debate may not be bigger it is most certainly much tastier. It’s akin to the age-old pizza dilemma regarding pineapple. Forget about the who, when, and where. Instead let’s focus on the what, why and how. That is to say, why it matters, what goes into/onto a great burger and how to prepare it.

IT’S HOW YOU START

Burgers should be made with 80/20 CAB (Certified Angus Beef 20% fat). Start with 1/2 lb patties that are hand formed daily and blended with the best of spices.

Homemade sauces usually add even a better flavor. A great burger will then need to rest at least 24 hours to land the flavors before they hit the grill and are cooked to order. Serving 1/2 pounders with a 20% fat content will achieve a beautiful sear with enough rendering to ensure that even a well-done order remains juicy and delicious.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE…BUN

Burgers should be paired with only the freshest veggies, housemade sauces/spreads, and cheeses. But the first thing you’re gonna taste is the bun. That’s why buns should be sourced from a local

bakery. A great burger is served on a toasted sesame seed bun and being sourced from a local bakery assures maximum freshness.

IF YOU COME, THEY WILL BUILD IT

With the foundation of any great burger set with patty and bun, the sky’s the limit. A great burger place will have multiple burgers on the daily menu but offer the option to create your own too. Find a burger shop that offers multiple toppings and options to meet the most picky pallet.

WHY SAY NO?

It goes without saying that anybody in the hospitality industry aims to please. The adage that you eat with your eyes first is still true. A masterpiece burger can be served open-faced to adorn all the goodness you are about to eat. Find a place not ashamed to brag about their burgers. Some of the best burgers need an extra plate served to capture all the goodness a burger can bring. A true burger lover knows the best burgers are served whole. Find a burger place that says NO to cutting your burger in half, unless you request it that way.

Choose a Party Rental Company

Party rental companies can help cross some of the important logistics off your to-do list when you are putting together an important occasion or hosting a party.

Whether it’s a shindig for dozens of guests or a happy afternoon for neighborhood kids, your event can be made more successful with the help of a party rental business. They can provide everything from seating and tents to cutlery and entertainment assets. For kids’ parties, they’re also an excellent place to find such things as inflatable bounce houses and other fun activities for rent.

Whatever your need, find a rental business with a devotion to excellent customer service.

Here’s some things to consider when hiring a good party rental outfit.

SELECTION AND QUALITY

Not all rental companies are equal, and the most obvious way you can tell the difference is by the products they provide – both in the variety to pick from and the quality of their offerings.

Some rental companies place their emphasis on one type of

event, such as weddings, children’s birthday parties or corporate retreats. You can see this from the supplies they offer for rent and how many different styles you have to pick from.

A wide selection is important, especially if you’re trying to use a very specific color scheme or decorating theme. The more choices available, the more likely you’ll be able to turn your dream party into reality.

But like any service, you typically get what you pay for in party rentals. You need to know precisely what kind of quality to expect so your event will end up looking chic, not cheap.

ADVICE AND EXPERTISE

Another thing to consider is how experienced the company’s owner and staff are in the event planning industry.

Seasoned professionals are typically better than newcomers because they can think of potential questions to ask and problems you might have before you’ve even thought of them. They’ve been around the block, so to speak.

The best rental companies will have the personnel with the kind of background that will help you plan and execute the perfect party. They’ll listen closely to your needs

and find ways to make your event run smoothly and stress-free.

PROFESSIONALISM

Unfortunately, not all party rental companies are run by true professionals. The best ones, though, make their quality obvious by the level of service they provide.

Because planning a party involves lots of communication, coordination and detail work, you need to find a rental company that responds quickly and professionally to your requests.

Does a real person answer the phones? If you leave a voicemail, do they respond promptly? Do they reply to your e-mails quickly and clearly? All these things can help point you in the right direction so you’ll know what to expect.

Another sign of professionalism is that they’ve thought through your insurance needs. Party rental equipment can be expensive, and you can be on the hook for any damage your guests do to the rental merchandise, for example. A good rental company will be able to walk you through insurance options to protect yourself, vendors and the venue.

REPUTATION

Fortunately, there’s another easy way to find the best party rental

companies. They’ll have a good reputation in your community.

Good rental companies will be able to provide you some references so you can research their track record. If your friends, family or coworkers have used a certain company in the past, first-person references are the most reliable way to know what you can expect.

Because different party vendors often work together in a local area, from caterers to event planners and others, you should look for a rental company that has a reputation for being easy to work with. If you’re working with other vendors for your party, ask which rental company they recommend you work with in your area.

PAYMENT POLICIES

Finally, ask what the party rental company’s policies for when and how they expect payment, including what happens if your event gets rescheduled or canceled.

Most companies will require a deposit up front and full payment at the time of the event, with only a partial refund possible depending on how early you give them notice of cancellation. Make sure you’ve not only got a clear, written agreement, but that you fully understand what the expectations are on both sides.

Choose a Fine Restaurant

When you’re looking for that perfect night out, a night where the food is great and the experience is memorable, chances are you are looking to dine at a fine restaurant offering your city’s best fare.

Whether you are a foodie or an adventurous gourmand, fine dining is characterized by topnotch service, unique dishes, crafted cocktails and a memorable atmosphere that invites guests to return.

Fine restaurants can turn any evening into a magical occasion. Here are some things to consider when selecting a fine restaurant.

RATINGS

Restaurant ratings are only as good as the publication rating them. Most people read Zagat reviews for an impartial and detailed opinion about restaurants.

Since 1979, this publication has doled out thoughts about the quality of food and service at a variety of restaurants. Zagat gives a total of 30 points to any given establishment. Restaurants are

given letter grades to help consumers find the best dining experiences in their area.

Michelin is another brand of restaurant guides. Since the early 1900s, this company, better known for its tires, has published restaurant guides for various countries around the world.

Unlike Zagat, Michelin relies on professionals to personally visit each restaurant. The company gives each recognized restaurant a rating from one to five stars. There is also additional information about cost effectiveness and scenery.

Trip Advisor is a reliable online source for restaurant rankings. Readers can search for restaurants by cuisine and location. Then they can read what writers think about the establishment.

FOOD

Each fine restaurant has its own cuisine and specialty. Most high-quality dining establishments will post menus on their websites. Ask each person in your party what kind of cuisine they prefer. Take special diets into consideration. Restaurants usually offer heart-healthy or low-carbohydrate options. Some will offer gluten-free choices and have allergy-friendly menus. If you cannot find information on their website, call them. Servers and hosts who answer the phone should be able to tell you about their menu for the evening.

BUDGET

When money is tight, there are ways you can get a better deal. The lunch menus at most restaurants are usually cheaper than dinner. Other dining establishments have great deals in the middle of the afternoon. Eating off-hours is a fabulous way to try a restaurant’s offerings without breaking your budget.

Fine dining establishments offer specials, which may change daily. It is perfectly acceptable to ask about the specials when making a reservation. If you are making a reservation for a large party, you

might order the special for everyone. It will save you time, and it takes the guesswork out of calculating the bill.

Many five-star restaurants now offer coupons to encourage new business. You might find these coupons on Facebook or the restaurant’s website. Check to see if you need to print the coupon before visiting the restaurant. Your local newspaper may have advertisements from local restaurants with discounts and menu specials.

TASTING MENUS

Restaurant connoisseurs should look for establishments with tasting menus that present seven to nine courses of seasonal offerings that change daily.

Tasting menus give you small portions of many dishes. It allows you to familiarize yourself with a wide range of courses. It ensures that your eating experience will stay fresh continuously.

Eating at a five-star restaurant doesn’t have to be daunting. Just check the reviews first and stay on budget. Eating from the tasting menu will help you understand the chef’s food style, and give you examples to choose from to help make your decision.

Choose a Golf Course

Whether you are new to the game of golf or an experienced golfer who has just moved to a new community, the search for a great golf course ranks pretty high on the to-do list.

Those new to the sport are most likely to choose a public course, often maintained and staffed by a municipality. These courses offer minimal amenities, but are an excellent place to hone your skills.

Country clubs represent a notch above, with courses that are designed to challenge your skill and are carefully maintained. These member-only clubs usually employ professionals who can help you improve your game and offer tips and advice. They generally offer pro shops and such amenities as caddies and carts for your use. You’ll also normally find restaurants, bars and other comforts.

Choosing a golf course depends on your skill level, budget and goals. If you are looking for a great golf course, you have many options. With enough research, you can find a location that will stretch your skills without breaking your budget.

THE COURSE

The course itself is the top factor for any serious golfer.

The ideal course should be difficult enough to challenge you but not so hard that you are continually frustrated. While going to the same handful of courses close to home is a good way to learn the basics, there comes a point where you want to grow your skill set.

Most golf courses display their course layouts online. There is also a difficulty rating so you know what to expect. Look for a layout and rating that is different from

your usual fare.

Sometimes, professional golfers officially endorse a golf course. They might even prepare a statement to give golfers insight into the arrangement. Some golf course designers have stellar reputations. Find out whether there are any well-known names involved with your prospective golf course.

The best courses match the natural surroundings. They will provide a beautiful backdrop for you to enjoy while golfing. Sometimes, the most memorable experience comes from playing in extraordinary settings.

AMENITIES

Amenities can bring added enjoyment to your game, especially if you are traveling with family or friends.

Family-oriented amenities include pools, water slides and kiddie play areas. Others are better for couples, such as a romantic restaurant, hot tub and scenic guest areas.

Anyone who owns or manages a business knows that golf courses are excellent places to hold meetings or executive retreats. Some of the best courses provide meeting rooms and guest services that rival five-star hotels.

The bottom line is that the amenities should match the purpose of your visit. Each location is different, catering to a unique clientele and price points. Shop around for a good match.

SERVICES

Every course offers a list of services that will make your visit more enjoyable.

Ask about club and equipment rental. The smartest golfers prefer to try different brands of equipment before buying it. It is often the way they find the best clubs. Take advantage of other services that might be offered. Most facilities know that a golf course is an excellent escape from daily life. They want you to feel pampered and special.

Why not improve on your swing a little while you’re there? Many golf courses offer specials on lessons.

And don’t forget about the tournaments. While you’re researching courses, look for special tournaments you can get into to test out the course, possibly at a cheaper price.

The best golf courses have gorgeous settings, excellent amenities and exceptional service, as well as the challenging course.

Choose a Swimming School

Swimming is not just a sport or a leisure activity. It’s a life skill that promotes safety, health and fun.

With the right school, your child can learn advanced swimming techniques while acquiring essential water safety skills. Here are some key points to consider when selecting a swimming school.

ASCA-CERTIFIED COACHES

The American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) is a professional organization that provides certification for swimming coaches.

Choosing a school with ASCA-certified coaches ensures that your child is in the hands of trained professionals who follow recognized teaching methodologies and uphold industry standards.

SAFE AND FUN ENVIRONMENT

Safety should be a top priority in any swim school. Look for schools with dedicated lifeguards, clear safety protocols and well-maintained facilities.

Moreover, swimming should be an enjoyable experience for your

child. A school that fosters a fun environment can nurture a lifelong love of swimming.

ADVANCED TECHNIQUES AND WATER SAFETY

An ideal swimming school goes beyond teaching basic strokes. Advanced techniques, including treading water, diving and competitive strokes, equip students with a wider range of skills.

Equally important is water safety education. A comprehensive program teaches children about the dangers of water and how to respond in emergency situations.

PURPOSEFUL PLAY

Learning through play is a fundamental part of childhood education. In swim schools, purposeful play combines structured learning with enjoyable activities.

This approach not only makes swimming lessons fun but also reinforces skills and techniques in an engaging manner.

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS

Swimming is a year-round sport. A swimming school that offers year-round programs allows students to maintain and enhance their skills continuously.

Regular swimming can also boost fitness, improve stamina, and increase confidence in the water.

PROGRAMS FOR ALL AGES

Swimming is a skill that people of all ages can and should learn. Look for a school that offers programs for various age groups, from infants and toddlers to teens and even adults.

This inclusivity ensures that everyone in your family can learn to swim and enjoy the benefits of this essential skill.

CONCLUSION

Choosing a swim school for your child is a crucial decision. An ideal school will have ASCA-certified coaches, provide a safe and fun environment, employ advanced techniques and purposeful play in their curriculum and offer yearround programs for all ages.

These elements ensure that your child not only learns to swim but also enjoys the process and understands the importance of water safety.

With the right swimming school, your child’s swimming education can make a splash in their overall development and lifelong enjoyment of water.

Choose the Best Daycare for Your Child

One of the most important decisions working parents must make is determining how their child will be taken care of when they are away from home. One popular option is a daycare center where professional caregivers provide nurturing and care in a structured environment.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), all of a child’s early experiences, whether at home, in child care or in other preschool settings are educa tional. When that care is consis tent, supportive and geared to the child’s age, development and tem perament, the association says, it increases the chances for a positive effect on children and families.

Parents look for places where their child is safe, the facility is clean and the staff is experienced and attentive.

Choosing a center can be a daunting task, and there are many factors to consider – not the least of which is the quality of care versus the cost of that care.

Here are a few things to consider:

STAFF

The quality of a daycare rests on its employees. The staff must be reliable and responsible. Request information on background checks of the staff.

Ask about the ratio of caregivers to children. Adults cannot do their jobs effectively if they have to care for 30 children at once with no extra assistance. Many states have rules about the ratio of caregivers that are different for different ages. Infants require more intense care than 10-year-olds, for example.

Good hygiene habits are a must. Sickness is easily spread among children and adults at a daycare. What types of hygiene and protocol do they have and use when dealing with germs or sick children?

Observe how the employees interact with children. They should communicate well and like kids.

The best daycare employees do not play favorites. They spend equal time with everyone and make every child feel important.

FACILITY

The facility should be in a safe and inviting environment. It should have bright colors and fun decor.

The lighting needs to be adequate. Inspect the bathrooms, dining areas and nap rooms. Everything should be decorated with children in mind.

Look outside at the play areas. Are they well-maintained? Is there plenty of room for children to run around? Is the play equip-

ment safe?

Every area should be designed with safety in mind. Look for locks on doors, sharp edges and dangerous objects that might be in a child’s reach.

ENTERTAINMENT AND ACTIVITIES

No child should be bored at a daycare. High-quality daycares offer activities that contribute to your child’s mental, physical and social health. Activities need to be both educational and fun. A center that incorporates fun into learning is the best type of daycare.

Ask the director what kinds of activities are available for children. It should be a mixture of free play and structured activities. Crafts, music, stories and age-appropriate lessons will help your child grow.

DISCIPLINE

Discipline is important, but how that discipline administered is equally important to every parent.

Ask the daycare how they deal with specific discipline issues. What are the consequences for undesirable behavior?

Also, if your child has difficulties with sharing, talk to them about how they might handle it. They should give you thoughtful answers. Ask for a copy of the daycare’s rules.

OTHER QUESTIONS

The daycare should have a stringent sickness policy. It will protect your child from catching viruses frequently. You don’t want to pay for a month of daycare only to have the child stay home because of illness.

The daycare should ask for a copy of the child’s vaccination records.

Throughout your visit, look to see if your child seems genuinely interested and comfortable. How does he or she interact with the other children? If your child is shy, see how the teachers get timid kids to engage with others.

Observe how your child interacts with the teachers. How do they address your child during the visit? Does the daycare have toys and activities that interest him or her?

If your child is of speaking age, you can ask directly for their opinion of the daycare.

Selecting a daycare is an important decision. Look at each option thoroughly before making a final decision. Follow your gut instinct. If you feel something is wrong at a particular facility, don’t be afraid of crossing them off your list. You can find another daycare that is more comfortable for you and your child.

With a bit of close observation and intuition, you should have no trouble finding a suitable daycare for your child.

Choose a Gold Buyer

Whatever your reason for needing to sell gold – either a new collection you don’t want or need or a way to generate much-needed cash – you’re going to want to make sure you get fair-market value, something that will happen only when you find a reputable gold buyer.

This professional will make the difference between you not getting what you deserve from the sale or receiving a handsome payoff.

Gold prices will always be volatile, subject to the peaks and valleys of the economy and markets. But it’s also a solid investment that can safeguard against inflation and declines in currencies.

It also comes with a huge risk: potential dealings with unscrupulous buyers who lack experience in determining the proper value of gold items. Many pieces of jewelry might be worth more than their gold content or melt value.

Anyone can make a mistake, but fly-by-night operators will often offer far less than the melt value of the gold in these items. They are

counting on your lack of knowledge.

the airwaves with ploys offering “immediate cash for your unwanted gold.” But mailing gold in flimsy prepaid envelopes to these dealers is the same as dropping cash into the mail.

Exercise caution when selling gold. While many buyers are honest and reputable, finding them requires research.

Here are some tips to help you get the most money from selling your unwanted gold.

RESEARCH

Do some research to determine the gold content of an item. Gold is soft, so it must be alloyed with

tion identifying the purity of its gold content. For instance, 24-karat gold contains 99.9 percent gold. It is measured in terms of a troy ounce, equal to about 1.097 avoirdupois ounces, the kind of ounce we use in measuring butter, flour and body weight. One troy ounce of 14-karat gold contains 14/24th troy ounce of the pure metal.

VISIT REPUTABLE JEWELRY STORES

Next, take your gold items to reputable jewelers in your area for their appraisal. A jeweler may charge a small fee for this service.

It is the best way to establish the gold content when the piece lacks markings. Take it to more than one jeweler to verify the findings.

The Better Business Bureau and the internet are valuable sources of information about gold buyers. Poor dealers usually leave a pile of complaints from disgruntled sellers who feel they were cheated. Do not deal with these companies.

Also, if a gold buyer operates from their home or business unrelated to precious metals, be careful. They probably don’t have enough experience to provide an accurate evaluation of your items.

It pays to use a local business. If you must mail your gold items, insure the package and use registered mail available at the United States Postal Service. You could use a shipper that offers package tracking and delivery verification. Do not trust someone you don’t know and have never met.

Learn as much as you can before visiting a gold dealer. Information is your ally. There are reputable gold buyers doing business today, and they will pay you for the true value of your piece. Doing the proper research and taking precautions will help you find the best people doing business today.

Choose a Pet Groomer

Pet groomers can help your pet stay clean and healthy. They’re skilled professionals who know how to lovingly handle your pet while trimming their nails, bathing them and cutting their hair.

They know that while their services will help improve a pet’s quality of life, those animals aren’t always appreciative and may put up a fuss around water or recoil from having their nails trimmed. Despite the challenges of reluctant pets, they’ll be able to give those pets the grooming they need to keep them free of pets, reduce shedding and make their coats clean and shining.

Here’s how to pick a good local pet grooming service for your pet.

GET REFERRALS

Family and friends should be your first stop. They might know of a good pet groomer in your area. Referrals are a large part of any business. Most groomers make an extra effort to make sure their customers are satisfied. If you are coming to a groomer via a recommendation, tell the person. Groomers will appreciate knowing that

their business has a great reputation. It is likely they will go the extra mile to make sure you are pleased with their services.

Groomers are most often found in large pet stores, veterinary offices and stand-alone storefronts. You can find them through your local newspaper or online. Make a list of groomers that are conveniently located near your home or business. You will drop your pet off and pick them up later in the day.

VISIT AND ASK QUESTIONS

Visit groomers on your list and inspect their shops. Check for cleanliness and professionalism. The service area should smell fresh

and clean. The pet waiting room should also be free from debris and chemicals.

Observe how the groomer and staff interact with animals and customers. Nothing can be more difficult than a slick, wiggly pet. But groomers should be gentle. They should never yell or jerk a pet around.

Inquire about their services. Do they groom both cats and dogs? Is there a separate waiting area for the two types of pets? Can you choose the shampoo?

Are nail clippings and anal gland expressions part of the package, or do these services cost extra?

Checking about these things ahead of time will spare you disappointment when you bring your pet home. Some groomers do not perform these services. It’s important to know what you can expect.

Also, be sure to ask about medical services. What happens if your pet has an emergency while they with the groomer? Does the groomer have a relationship with the local veterinarian?

Another option is a mobile pet groomer. These professionals have a vehicle with everything they need to groom your pet in front of your house. If traveling is inconvenient, mobile pet groomers might be an

option for you.

BRINGING YOUR PET

Prior to scheduling an appointment, bring your pet to their office. Observe the relationship between your pet and the groomer. Are they comfortable with each other?

Tell your groomer whether your pet is sensitive to having nails trimmed or ears cleaned. Some pets are terrified of the hair dryer. Mentioning it to your groomer can help the situation be more successful and less stressful.

Choose which services you need before your arrival. Sometimes, groomers who work on commission might try to upsell you. Never let them talk you into services you do not need or want.

If you are unhappy with the way your pet looks when you pick it up, speak to the groomer right away. It might be due to miscommunication or your pet’s behavior. Expect groomers to fix the problem to your satisfaction immediately.

Remember, you can always change your groomer. If you are uncomfortable or your pet seems stressed, look for a new pet groomer. It is important that you and your pet are satisfied with the groomer’s results.

Shop at the Davis Farmers Market

Looking to connect to the community?

There’s no better way than through the Davis Farmers Market.

Year-round at Central Park in downtown Davis, thousands gather each week to shop for what is grown, raised and made locally. Since 1976, the market has con nected residents to their commu nity, its land and its people. Shopping there supports a sustain able lifestyle, and provides a huge impact on the local food system.

The Davis Farmers Market is open year-round, rain or shine, every Saturday morning and Wednesday afternoon. It has long been one of the only markets with a permanent shade structure. Walk rows of stalls lined with a beautiful array of fruits and vegetables, including certified organic produce, choice meats, chicken, seafood, wine, local eggs and honey. Choose from a variety of fresh-baked goods, plants, flowers and gifts. Enjoy a picnic from one of its food stands, made from market ingredients.

Below are some secrets to maximizing your market experience.

GET TO KNOW THE GROWERS, THE SEASONS

Farmers market shopping supports your neighbors and the environment. It keeps ag land rural and sustainable. Most vendors grow what they sell, and are happy to answer questions and suggest ways to prepare their products.

TASTE THE DIFFERENCE

You’ll never go back after you taste fresh-picked berries, locally grown potatoes or tomatoes, or just-harvested corn. Yes, you can get these things year-round at the supermarket but in the off-seasons, they come from another hemisphere, losing flavor and using up a lot of fossil fuels to get here.

TRY SOMETHING NEW

The market will often have produce you can’t find in chain stores because some produce doesn’t ship well. You will find a larger selection of things like peppers, corn, potatoes and tomatoes, and a greater variety of colors and flavors than a traditional

grocery store. Rather than shopping with strict recipes in mind, create your meals from the bounty of your discoveries.

BRING THE LITTLE ONES

The market can be an educational experience for the whole family. Your children can talk to farmers and start to understand how food is grown, and why it’s seasonal. Picky eaters are less likely to turn up their noses at produce that’s in-season and picked at its peak. (While we welcome families, health department rules forbid dogs in areas where food is sold.)

FIND MORE THAN PRODUCE

In addition to fruits and

vegetables, the market has vendors that sell honey, herbs, baked goods, nuts and nut milks, eggs, cheeses, meats and jams. There are also succulents, garden starts and

DISCOVER UNUSUAL GIFTS

The market hosts florists and artisans as well. On Saturdays, there are many skilled craftspeople who bring their customized goods. Examples include candles, soaps, pottery, tools, woodworking, quilts, umbrellas, totes, masks and clothing. The market shed sells logo merchandise and baskets, which are great components for building custom gift packages.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

The Davis Farmers Market, 301 C St., is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and 4 to 8 p.m. (or 6 p.m. during colder months) on Wednesdays. Saturdays is the flagship market, while the Wednesday and satellite markets are a great chance for a quick restock.

Satellite markets include the UC Davis Farmers Market, on the North Quad: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays during fall and spring quarters; the Sutter Davis Hospital Farmers Market, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays, May through September; and the Sutter Medical Center Farmers Market in Sacramento, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, year-round.

Choose a Pawn Shop

Abusiness with a long history, pawn shops offer services to both buyers and sellers –and with new regulations are more trustworthy than in the past. They can be fascinating places to shop, filled with items and collectibles you might not find anywhere else and often at great bargain prices.

The merchandise was collected from sellers looking for a quick loan or a quick sale.

If you haven’t visited a pawn shop in recent years, you need to know you’re missing out on awesome deals on everything from home supplies and appliances to musical instruments and jewelry.

Here’s how to find an excellent pawn shop in your community.

FAIR DEALS

If you are looking to sell or pawn an item – which means using a possession as collateral on a loan –then a pawn shop’s reputation will be important.

The best pawn shops have a reputation for offering fair deals to their customers. If you own

something of value, like a diamond ring or photography equipment, you can leave it at a pawn shop and borrow a portion of its value.

When you pay the loan back on time, you get the merchandise back. If you don’t pay the loan in a timely manner, the pawn shop keeps your property and sells it for a profit.

Pawning is one of the simplest and oldest ways of borrowing money. It can be a good option if you need cash quickly. It is vital that you find a pawn shop that will offer you a fair price for what you own, whether you are selling it outright or pawning it.

Good selection

Shoppers can also find amazing

deals at their local pawn shops, provided they know what to look for.

Some pawn shops tend to favor one type of inventory over another. While one store might have a variety of musical instruments, another might sell jewelry and family heirlooms. It takes some browsing to figure out which shops sell the products you are seeking.

The best thing about pawn shops is that their merchandise is constantly changing. Each time they receive more inventory, or a pawned item goes on the sale’s floor for the first time, you can discover new and exciting things to buy.

That’s why smart pawn store

shoppers make repeat visits to the same stores. You never know what treasures have suddenly become available.

QUALITY

First time visitors to pawn shops are often surprised by the quality of merchandise they find. Latemodel electronics, powerful computers, name-brand items and high-end jewelry are just some of the things that you can find in pawn shops throughout the country.

Look for a store with a good mix of quality merchandise and affordable prices. Don’t be afraid of negotiating with the salespeople. Most pawn store owners are used to some level of haggling, and it never hurts to ask for a better deal.

CONVENIENCE

Finally, look for a pawn shop that is convenient for you to visit. It should be in a neighborhood close to your home or office, in a safe and easy location.

When you find a local pawn shop with the right mix of merchandise in an ideal location, chances are you’ll end up spending more of your time and budget there. It is a smart way to shop locally.

Choose a Bike Shop

Bike shops offer specialized services that keep bicycle aficionados on the road. Whether a person rides bikes for exercise, affordable and convenient transportation or as a competitive athlete, keeping a bike in top shape requires someone who knows what they are doing. It is also the perfect place to go to make your bike purchase.

They type of bicycle you choose depends on your goals. Fitness aficionados and those looking for basic transportation gravitate toward touring bikes such as the 10-speed. Other adventurers take up motocross bikes featuring knobby tires for traction on dirt roads and tracks. Still others opt for simple pedalers for leisurely rides through the park or neighborhood.

If you’re set on buying a new bicycle, as important as the type of bike you choose is where you plan to purchase it. Why? Beyond quality, price and deal, you’ll want to enter into a long-term relationship with the store to provide maintenance and enjoy the

benefits of consulting pros and being around other cycling enthusiasts.

Bicyclists have many choices in finding durable, quality bicycles that best suit their needs. And finding the right bike shop that shares your passion will ensure you get off to the best start on two wheels. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a bike shop.

CHOOSE A SPECIALTY

If you’re in the market for a new bicycle, consider the wide variety of options.

Bicycles fall into four main categories – comfort, mountain, road and fitness.

Comfort bikes are the least expensive. And they’re best suited for casual riding on easy terrain.

Mountain bikes work better for rugged terrain. These sturdy cycles have wide, knobby tires that will not go flat easily. They offer great shock absorption to keep riders comfortable while riding over rocks and bumpy surfaces.

Road bikes are lightweight and built for speed on paved surfaces. If you’re planning to cover long distances on the road, this is your best bet.

Fitness bikes can help you get into great shape. They are more comfortable than road bikes, but less aerodynamic.

DO THE RESEARCH

Scour the internet, read reviews of shops and ask other cyclists for recommendations when selecting a bike shop.

The best shops will have education programs to teach you the pros and cons of each bicycle. And their salespeople will help you select a bike based on your needs and goals. You’ll probably be building an ongoing relationship with the shop you choose. Your new bike is going to need regular maintenance as you rack up the miles.

In addition, your neighborhood may have events in your biking specialty. There may even be bike clubs for you to join. Local shops sponsor many of those events and clubs. Ask attendees about their experiences with various bike shops.

GO SHOPPING

Once you have a list of stores, visit your top two or three choices. Observe the salespeople. They should be knowledgeable about manufacturers, warranties, and the different aspects of the bicycles. Some of them may even talk about bikes from personal experience.

It is best to find a store that offers fully assembled bikes. It is a great way to know that your bike has been correctly assembled and adjusted. Each nut and bolt has a purpose. You don’t want your bike to malfunction at a critical point in your ride because it wasn’t put together correctly.

Quality shops will allow you to test drive various bikes. It might be necessary to leave a deposit with the store, but your experience will be well worth it.

A sales associate should help you choose the right sized bike and adjust it to fit your body.

Choose a New Car Dealer

New car dealers give buyers the chance to test drive vehicles, look at a variety of different options and tap into their expertise on the latest changes in the automotive industry.

While new technology has enabled you to choose a car online and have it delivered to your home, you’d be wise to take advantage of dealer expertise. Most car dealer ships have years of experience and knowledge in the brands they sell and service, and they can work with you to get the best financing possible.

There’s usually no shortage of dealers who carry many of the popular models, so one may seem just as good as the other. Not true. Pick the wrong dealer and you could get stuck with a lemon or unfair financing terms. A good dealer, however, will make the car buying process a transparent breeze and offer excellent after-purchase support.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT CAR

The first thing you need to figure out is what type of automobile you’re looking to buy. This will

help you narrow down brands and pick your best option. Large families may need an SUV or van. College students buying their first car might be happier with a compact car that will let them save on gas expenses.

Along with the car model, there are numerous options to consider. You might get a car with a navigation system, moonroof, GPS and

satellite radio, just to name a few. Many of these amenities are now standard, but some involve extra costs.

If you have to commute long distances, think about purchasing a smaller car with a good MPG (miles per gallon) rating. Hybrid or electric cars can help you save money on gas. Anyone in a cold climate might look at various

vehicles with either all-wheel or front-wheel drive.

CHOOSE THE DEALER

Once you have settled on a car model, check into area car dealers. Finding several dealers who sell the brand of car you want is usually best. The competition for your business will help you negotiate the total cost of your car.

Make sure to look for current discounts on the car you want. During specific times of the year, you might be able to get a great deal on a new car. It is particularly true during year-end sales.

Of course, you should test-drive a car before purchasing it.

When you begin your negotiations, remember that price isn’t everything. Service should play a role as well. You are building a long-term relationship with this dealer and manufacturer. It is not worth getting a less-than-satisfactory experience just to save a few dollars.

Make sure that you feel comfortable with the dealership. Buying a car is an expensive, longterm commitment. It is always better to find a car salesperson who is informative and friendly. It will make your transaction as simple and comfortable as possible.

Choose a Towing Service

Most vehicle owners will, at some point, need the services of a wrecker or a tow truck. Whether it is because they’ve been in an accident, gotten a flat tire, had a car break down or got stuck in the snow, wreckers can safely move a vehicle to a place where it can get worked on or back to the owner’s home.

Wreckers and tow trucks are very similar and many people use the term interchangeably. A wrecker is actually a type of tow truck that has a large boom and a cable winch.

Given that it is almost inevitable that someday you will need the services of a wrecker/tow truck company, it’s worth taking time before such an event occurs to develop a relationship. That way, you’ll know you’ll be working with a service that’s reliable, professional and trustworthy.

If you take the steps to get familiar with area wrecker companies ahead of time scenarios like this won’t be too much of a hassle.

Here’s a list of tips for finding a

wrecker number to store in your phone today.

TALK TO PROFESSIONALS

Ask for recommendations from trustworthy people, such as your local police or sheriff’s department. Your insurance agent or mechanic might also know some great services. You are searching for an honest company who will charge a fair price.

Make sure you are not getting paid referrals. For example, a mechanic might guide you toward a towing company he owns or that pays him for referring new customers. Getting several recommendations from different sources will help keep you from being influ-

enced by walking advertisements.

ASK AROUND

Family, friends and work colleagues may know good towing services. Ask around to find out about wrecker companies they’ve used in the past. Would they be willing to use them again? Did the driver arrive promptly? Was the price reasonable? How did the driver treat the car during transport? Was there any damage? Did the driver act professionally?

Look for longevity

Not all companies are qualified for towing vehicles. Unfortunately, many companies are in business, but are not all that responsible.

Look for a business that has

been properly licensed, insured and trains its employees thoroughly. Research how long a company has been in business. A business can keep operating only if it has satisfied customers and continues to do excellent work. However, newer businesses may have newer vehicles and better technology.

GET PRICE QUOTES

To find the best wrecker companies, have several business give you price quotes. Wrecker services will consider several factors in their quotes, including the type of vehicle you drive, the distance it has to be towed and even the time it was towed – day or night.

Find out how each company calculates its rates so you know what the cost will be before an emergency.

Beware of companies with especially low quotes. They may have hidden fees, inexperienced employees, old equipment or bad service.

Once you have identified the wrecker services you will use, keep their names and phone numbers in a handy place. The phone numbers should be in your glove compartment, console or programmed into your phone. That way, you won’t panic if you break down.

Choose a Security System

he needs families have for security systems vary based on location, the cost of the home and the cost of the goods inside. Modern technology provides a wide range of security capabilities, but in some locations, people far prefer the security of a professional monitoring service that can provide an increased level of service.

Many professional home-monitoring and security services are available to choose from and you shouldn’t have to spend a fortune to bring

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re in the market for a new home security system:

THE COMPANY

There are plenty of companies in the market that can help you. Choosing the best one can seem like a daunting task. Do you prefer a system with 24-hour monitoring? Would a wireless or wired system best fit your needs? Is a simple, basic system the best or do you need a more elaborate and high-tech option?

Qualified, professional salespeople can help you navigate through your choices. They don’t push products; rather they can educate you on all of the selections so you can pick the best

CUSTOMIZATION

Consider how you want the system to be configured. Security systems

use several types of sensors – from open-close sensors on doors and windows to motion sensors that capture movement. Picking the right sensors can make a big difference in the usefulness of the system and the final cost.

For instance, if you have a pet that likes to roam the house at night, you don’t want to have a motion sensor that trips accidentally. Older houses have wiring that might be difficult to handle, so you might opt for a wireless system.

Security systems often use zones or areas of protection. Decide how many zones you need. A security system can monitor different zones in different ways. When you know the backyard is supposed to be unoccupied during the day, some systems might allow you to monitor the backyard zone while disarming the front door area.

THE EXTRAS

Consider how much your alarm system will cost over time. Many companies will offer discounts on installing the system if you agree to a long-term contract for monitoring services. It might be a smart agreement. If you want your alarm system monitored, getting a price break on a fundamental service makes sense.

Many systems provide additional service to make you more secure. You might be able to add on sensors to detect fires, carbon monoxide, natural gas or water in your basement. These features can be easily installed by a professional.

The most important factor is trustworthiness. The best companies will support the product long after the sale is complete. They will help you with any problems and make certain you are comfortable with using your alarm system.

After all, a security system is an investment in your peace of mind.

Choose a Final Resting Place

There are few things in life more certain than that you will someday die. Knowing this, planning for what will happen to your body before you die takes a burden off your survi vors at a time when they will be experiencing grief at your passing.

The type of final resting place you choose may be tied up in family traditions or be linked to your personal beliefs and desires. You may already have a family plot in a cemetery or you may want to have your ashes interred in a mausoleum.

Your final resting place is designed to keep your memory alive, so planning your own funeral and choosing a resting place with your finances and wishes in mind is one of the most compassionate and selfless acts you can make and can preserve your legacy for years to come.

Whether you’re pre-planning for yourself or helping a family member with choices, end-of-life decisions will have a lasting effect. Here are some things to consider when choosing a final resting place.

CEMETERY

Choosing a resting place is similar to buying real estate. Location will play a large part in choosing a cemetery plot or mausoleum.

Your final resting place should have special meaning for you and your loved ones. Ideally, it should be neat, clean and have long-term arrangements for taking care of the grounds. A convenient location is preferable, so loved ones can pay their respects easily and conveniently.

Much of this decision will be based on personal preference. It might be a small, quiet country location or a plot in the middle of a bustling city. There are plenty of options available, depending on your wishes.

The property manager should have a stellar reputation and a lengthy track record of being professional. It is important that they make you feel comfortable and at peace with your decisions.

Look for a cemetery that will be run in perpetuity. It should have stable management now and detailed plans for ongoing maintenance through decades to come. Do not be afraid to ask questions

about the company’s history and plans for the future.

HEADSTONES

Deciding on the right headstone is another way to leave a legacy.

The monument or headstone can say a lot about the deceased’s life. You can choose a simple, straightforward stone or an elaborate stone with a custom design. You can also leave a message for descendants. This headstone will be around for a very long time, and it can inform people about your life.

You might want something more unique. Monuments can also

reflect the personality and interests of the person they are honoring.

Many companies offer a variety of designs and layouts for people who want a special headstone. They have symbols and messages that can honor religious beliefs, clubs, honors or careers. These elements will add personality to your headstone.

These companies are happy to cater to your request. They might also make recommendations.

A final resting place will honor a legacy for many years to come. The decisions you make will leave a meaningful impression, so take the time to choose wisely.

enhance your shopping experience.

ONLINE PRESENCE

NFrom the variety of products to the quality of service, several factors can influence your experience. Here are some things to look for when selecting a smoke shop that suits your needs.

The right smoke shop should stock an array of smoking accessories, catering to a variety of preferences. Look for a shop that carries hand pipes, water pipes, vapes, E-cigs, hookahs, tobacco and more. A wide assortment reflects a shop’s commitment to meet diverse customer needs and stay abreast of market trends.

QUALITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

Hand and water pipes come in a variety of shapes, sizes and materials. Look for quality craftsmanship and materials, such as borosilicate glass, which offers better durability and heat resistance.

For vapes and E-Cigs, check the brands and models carried by the

shop. Reputable brands are typically more reliable and deliver a better experience.

TOBACCO SELECTION

For traditional tobacco smokers, a good smoke shop should have a quality selection of loose tobacco and cigars. Consider the range of flavors, blends and origin countries, as these can greatly affect your smoking experience.

HOOKAHS AND ACCESSORIES

If you’re into hookah smoking, look for shops that offer not just hookahs but also a range of shisha flavors and coals. The quality and style of hookahs can vary

A good smoke shop should have a knowledgeable and friendly staff. They should be able to explain different product features, make recommendations based on your preferences and answer any questions you may have. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced smoker, good service can significantly enhance your shopping experience.

LEGAL COMPLIANCE

Ensure the shop is compliant with all local and state regulations. This includes selling products only to those over the legal age limit and complying with any product-specific regulations. Shops that don’t follow the rules might not be reliable or trustworthy.

LOCATION AND STORE HOURS

Convenience is a factor to consider. Is the store in a location that’s easy for you to get to, and are the hours of operation suitable for your schedule?

Also, consider the ambiance of the shop. A clean, organized and comfortable environment can

In today’s digital world, a smoke shop’s online presence is an important factor. A well-designed website or active social media presence allows you to browse products, read reviews and learn more about the shop from the comfort of your own home.

PRICING

While pricing shouldn’t be the only consideration, it’s certainly important. Compare prices among local shops or online to ensure you’re getting a fair deal.

Keep in mind that while you don’t want to overpay, exceptionally low prices might reflect low product quality.

Finding the right smoke shop involves more than just locating a place that sells smoking accessories. It requires considering the range and quality of products, the knowledge and friendliness of the staff, legal compliance, location, online presence and pricing.

A shop that scores well in these areas will likely offer a better shopping experience and help you find the right products to meet your smoking needs.

Select the Best Financial Planner

Financial planners are key partners who can help you manage your money to meet your life goals. They can do such things as analyze budgets and create spending plans, create strategies for long- and short-term savings and help you plan for retirement or to pay for college.

It’s a common mistake to confuse financial planners with financial advisors. Although the fields are closely linked, it’s worth defining the specialties. Financial advisors can offer a wide variety of financial services, but are most commonly retained to execute stock trades and manage investments on behalf of their clients. They also offer tax advice and are generally responsible for maximizing your investments.

If you’re looking for broader help with overall goals, you’re going to want to find a financial planner you can trust.

Seek referrals from your friends, family and trusted individuals who have built substantial financial reserves. If their modest portfolios have become bigger over time, a skilled financial planner likely

played a role in that success. Look at the educational and professional background of each recommendation. Find out whether that person has worked with people who match your financial circumstances.

Financial planners who have undergraduate degrees in finance or business show a dedication to this work.

Verify that each prospect has

the right certifications. Financial planners must have specific certifications to legally practice in the field. Credentials vary according to the location and advising type, but all must have formal training.

Once you are ready, meet with several financial planners to gauge their trustworthiness. Integrity is one of the key qualities in a good financial planner.

During the meeting, honestly

We Understand Commitment

explain your financial goals. Wealth building should be a goal. Minimizing risk and maximizing returns will help grow your resources.

Whether your desired outcome is to launch a small business or send your kids to college, share these thoughts with your financial planner.

Also, don’t be shy about detailing your debt level. It is essential that the professional understands all aspects of your financial situation. It could motivate the planner to make your money work harder so you can break free from debt. Finally, discuss compensation with any financial planner. Sometimes professionals are paid a flat rate, while others will receive a percentage from any profits made on investments.

These matters must be openly discussed, so you can understand how their compensation may affect their investment recommendations. Some unscrupulous experts could advocate risky investment strategies for their own financial gain.

Taking the time to research will help you select the best financial planner in your area. You will be on your way to a healthier financial future.

At Edwa rd Jones, we deliver candid guidance and personalized investment strategies to help you plan for and realize the possibilities of your future – for you, your family and generations to follow.

Choose an RV Repair Company

For those who love to adventure in their recreational vehicle (RV), the condition of their traveling home is of foremost importance. They want to be on the move, not stuck by the side of the road grappling with mechanical issues.

Even if you’ve learned the insand-outs of your RV and are handy with tools, the complexity of modern RVs often require specialists for repairs.

When it comes time to fixing or maintaining your RV, a professional repair company is going to keep your vehicle in top shape. You will need experienced mechanics and excellent customer service.

After all, your RV is an enormous investment. Don’t trust it to just anyone.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE

Find someone who specializes in RV repair.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking ordinary mechanics can do it. They might be able to handle basic repairs — most engines are similar, after all. But it is much better to find a company with the right tools and experience to handle an RV. Some models require specialized equipment or expertise to do the job right.

Whenever possible, choose a mechanic who knows your specific make and RV model. They will be familiar with problems and glitches that you may encounter on your RV. They will also look for mechanical issues you may not have noticed, as well as give you advice on future performance. The best mechanics will fix problems before they become major issues.

Of course, the repair company should have the facilities to match your RV. Class 1 motorhomes require big repair bays and lifts similar to18-wheeler garages.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

The best RV repair companies remember the customer is always the boss.

Their hours should fit your needs. The ability to drop off or retrieve your RV after work will be a huge help if you maintain a busy schedule.

While location matters, your priority should be to find a quality RV repair professional. You might have to drive a long way to get there. Finding a top-notch professional is more important than convenience.

THE TRYOUT

When you think you’ve found a quality RV repair specialist, try them out. It’s much better to have this person do minor maintenance or upkeep rather than wait until your RV has broken down.

When you take your RV for a tune-up or oil change, take note of their service. Do they leave the motorhome clean? Do they finish jobs on time? Do they stick with their estimated cost and call you before doing extra work?

Their performance on routine jobs will indicate what you can expect when your RV needs a major overhaul in the future.

EXTRA SERVICES

The repair shop may provide

extra services. Don’t be afraid to inquire about them.

For example, some RV repair companies can upgrade your cabin with better materials or modern technology. Maybe you need a flatscreen TV to replace your old set, or your refrigerator has stopped working. It will be a relief for you to know that there is a company that can handle interior issues as well as heavy mechanical problems.

Cleaning your RV is another consideration. It helps to have a place where your vehicle can get washed. Some repair companies can make your RV look like new, or they can point to you to a place that will help you achieve that feel.

By taking the time now, you can find an RV repair company that will keep looking and driving great for years to come.

Choose an Auto Body Shop

If you own a vehicle and manage to avoid dents, nicks and scratches, consider yourself lucky. But even the most careful drivers finds themselves in situations out of their control. Debris can fall from passing trucks, other drivers miscalculate in parking lots and random accidents occur every day, all conspiring to damage your vehicle.

If the extent of the damage is severe, you’ll find yourself in need of a good auto body shop to return your car to its printing form.

Not surprisingly, shops specializing in this service can vary in quality, reliability and cost. It’s not unusual for auto body repair estimates to differ by hundreds if not thousands of dollars. To get the best work at the fairest price requires an investment in time and asking the right questions.

Choosing the right body shop depends on many factors, such as the extent of damage, whether the costs are born by yourself or insurance, the experience of the shop with your make and model of vehicle and the shop’s history and reputation, among others.

Paramount to your search is finding an auto body shop that’s honest, trustworthy and dependable. That choice will ensure that your vehicle is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly.

The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touch-up to a full-body repair.

Your friends, family and colleagues might have recommendations. After all, auto body shops are an unfortunate, but necessary, part of life for most people.

Have a list of companies, research each shop on the Internet and read customer reviews.

Testimonials, negative and positive, should be considered. But keep in mind that no business has a 100 percent satisfaction rate. Someone will always be displeased. Also, more people are likely to leave a negative rather than a positive comment.

A good source for finding an auto body shop is your local newspaper. Local businesses advertise and many times you can find special deals to help save you money.

Once you have created a list of shops, contact them on the phone and ask pertinent questions. How long have they been in business? What are their specialties? How soon can you bring your vehicle in for an inspection?

Ask to set up an appointment for a free inspection. Then further investigate the business. Look around their lobby. Is it clean? Do they have their license and any awards or certificates posted? Do they care enough about their customers to offer reading material, coffee or water?

Consider prices. Are they comparable to other body shops? While you want to find a great deal, cheaper is not always better. Understand that you will often get what you pay for when it comes to auto body work.

Low prices may be tempting, but they typically mean sub-par work, used parts and paint that is incorrectly applied.

Feel free to ask the manager or owner for references before they work on your car.

You can also check their

previous work. When you see a car with paint drips, panels that are misaligned or paints that don’t match, look elsewhere. You will not save money if you need to have the improper work redone.

The shop should inspect your vehicle for repairs that are not readily visible. Often, there are hidden damages that cannot be detected until repair work begins on the vehicle.

Finding an auto body shop may not be the most pleasant business because it usually means your vehicle has suffered some kind of damage. But finding the right shop will make the experience much more pleasant and you will be happy with the repairs. Especially if you find the right shop that knows how to repair your vehicle so it looks the same as before, or even better.

Choose a Memory Care Center

With increasing numbers of aging adults being diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, the medical profession has been rallying to provide appropriate care that provides the highest quality of life possible. Given all the challenges that someone with those diseases face, memory care centers are becoming more utilized options in the menu of care available.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed, the next step is to choose the right type of care by identifying and prioritizing needs. Do you or they need care with daily living, such as bathing and dressing? How about other health care needs, such as diabetes or other chronic conditions, that require routine medications?

A top priority in choosing a memory care center is ensuring it is staffed with professionals who have a reputation for stellar care and is a comforting environment that helps maintain the best quality of life possible.

Which you choose depends largely on individual circumstances. Here’s a basic primer in what you need to know when considering a memory care facility.

STAFF

The experience and attitude of staff members is one of the most

important considerations. They should treat all patients with kind ness and respect.

continuing education to employees to assure that everyone is up to date with the latest in memory loss research and care. It is a field that is constantly changing with new breakthroughs happening all the time.

Always visit a memory care center before admitting a loved one. Tour the facilities to make

Consistency and stability are important to those suffering from memory loss. The center should have a low turnover rate among staff members. No memory care center should rely heavily on parttime workers.

Ask about the ratio of staff to residents, as well as the backgrounds of any medical practitioners employed by the center.

Your loved one needs personalized care and attention. It is vital that the center has enough workers on staff to provide quality care for your loved one.

SECURE, COMFORTABLE SETTING

Quality memory care centers will resemble comfortable, inviting homes. They should not look like hospitals.

The facility should be clean and sanitary without appearing sterile. A center’s cleanliness is an indication of the dedication and price of everyone who works there.

Ask questions about the activities offered to residents, how visits are handled and the types of therapies available.

Because patients can sometimes forget where they are, it is important to ask how the center protects its residents. What kind of security features do they use?

Note your general impressions of each center you visit.

SUPPORT

Quality memory care centers have support services for residents and families.

Symptoms from dementia can range from mild to extreme. The center should be equipped to handle all stages of dementia.

The best centers have support groups for residents and family members.

You and your loved one should be comfortable with the memory care center you choose. The best facilities can give patients a muchneeded boost and improve their overall quality of life.

Choose a Great Salon

Everyone has their own style and often a major expression of that style is found in a haircut. The challenge of finding a great salon comes in searching out that has stylists who will create the look that you want every time.

Creating a relationship with a great hair salon means you can ensure that each visit means the kind of style and color you expect. Your stylist will also get to know your preferences and suggest different styles, techniques and looks to update your appearance. They’ll offer a selection of professional products unavailable on the retail market that make your hair vibrant and healthy and help project the best version of yourself.

Here’s what you need to think about if you’re looking for a new salon.

GET ADVICE

Asking friends and family for referrals is a great way to find a salon. Look for people with hair that is similar to yours. Different hair types might have a different experience. Be sure the salon and stylist can work with your type of hair.

Get the name of the stylist at the salon. Many times, it is the stylist who will make the salon experience worthwhile.

LOOK ONLINE

Researching your options on the internet will help you refine your list.

Salon websites can give you tremendous insight into the business and their values. If you are searching for a budget cut, don’t worry if the site has too many features.

Salons that don’t have websites might be well-kept secrets. They might be keeping costs down, which will help you receive services at a lower price.

But if you need a high-end makeover, an impressive website could be the sign of a fabulous experience. It might show their attention to style and detail, as well as modern trends.

MATCH YOUR LIFESTYLE

Look for salons that match your lifestyle. If convenience is important in your life, make sure the salon is close to your home or office. If you work long hours, your ideal salon will be open during hours you can make appointments. People who are hip and young might prefer a salon that is energetic.

The staff’s appearance will also

tell you a lot. Stylists like to experiment with their own hair. They might even think of themselves as walking billboards.

If your hair is easy to cut but difficult to color, opt for a salon that has a solid reputation for its colorists. Remember, everyone’s needs are different. You can find a salon for your individual requirements.

OTHER OPTIONS

Haircuts and styles are a salon’s basic services, but they might offer other treatments. Manicures, pedicures and deep conditioning are just some of the extra services you might find at a salon. If you need to have a pedicure while your hair dye is setting, choose a salon that can multi-task. Don’t assume a highend salon will offer massages and other spa-like features. Verify that the beauty shop has the services

you need before making an appointment.

PRICE

Cost is an important factor in choosing a salon. When you receive a price quote for a cut, be sure to find out what is included. Even high-end salons might charge a separate fee for washing or blow drying.

Be sure the prices are applicable to your hair type and length. Many places offer cheaper prices for short hair, while others with long locks pay a premium.

Choosing the right salon is the first step toward making the impression you want to make. Finding the right salon will save you time and aggravation when you get ready at home.

No one wants to have their home on the market for an extended time period. Once you have made the decision to sell your home, you likely need to be able to get it sold quickly so you can move to your new home.

There are several things you can do to make it more likely that your home will sell quickly, such as remodeling, marketing and staging. Above all, you’ll want to retain the services of an experienced local real estate agent.

Here are some time-tested steps you can take that will make it much easier to see a “sold” sign in your front yard quickly.

PRICING

The most important step is to price your home correctly at the outset, and a good real estate agent can help you with that.

Price it too low and you’ll leave money on the table. Price it too high, though, and your home will take longer to sell – or won’t sell at all – because savvy buyers won’t take it seriously.

To hit the pricing bull’s eye, you’ve got to know what is comparable in your market. A good agent will be able to pull data about recent comparisons, typically from the last six months, for sales of

homes that are similar to yours.

STAGING

Staging your home is sometimes thought of as an elaborate process that involves redecorating and renting beautiful furniture to make your interior look its best, but it doesn’t always have to be that intense.

In its simplest terms, staging is about presenting your home in the most appealing way possible. The goal is to get buyers to imagine putting their own things in your home, so basic steps like clearing out clutter and removing your personal photos can help.

PHOTOGRAPHY

For most buyers, the first impression of your house won’t be made in person. It will be made through photos of your home they see online or in print ads.

That’s why it’s critical to have quality photographs of your home.

In some markets, especially for high-end houses, that might mean having a professional photographer shoot images of your home when it’s staged at its best.

For most homes, though, a good, thoughtful real estate agent or their assistant could do the job. The key is to find someone who knows enough about both photography and real estate to show your property in its best light, inside and out.

THE REALTOR

Picking the right real estate agent is absolutely key to selling your house quickly.

Not only should you feel good about them personally – knowing you can communicate well with them, trust them and feel good about them listing your home – but you should find an agent who will work their hardest to market and sell your home quickly.

Ask them about their background, how many similar homes to yours they have sold in recent years and what sets them apart as a real estate agent. Look for examples of the agent’s listings and make sure they’ll quickly add your home to the MLS with good photos and descriptions of your property.

SPREAD THE WORD

While your real estate agent will take the lead in selling your house, there are also some steps you can do personally to help get the word out about your home.

Let your friends, family and neighbors know that your home is on the market. You can share photos on social media and do personal networking to help raise awareness about your home’s strong points that potential buyers might enjoy. You never know where the buyer might come from, so spread the word far and wide.

OPEN HOUSE

It’s a good idea to schedule some open houses to let potential buyers and local real estate agents tour your home.

You should make your house look its best, obviously, but also take steps to make your house seem comfortable, cozy and homey when people arrive. Make sure the house smells good, perhaps by baking some fresh cookies or treats for visitors who walk in.

FIX IT UP

Finally, pay attention to details to make sure your home is in top shape cosmetically.

This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to spend a lot of money. A little paint and elbow grease can go a long way toward sprucing up most homes.

Make sure the gardens, flower beds and other landscaping are neat, clean and free of weeds. Make a checklist of simple do-it-yourself tasks to complete, like replacing burned-out light bulbs, making sure doors and hinges shut properly and don’t squeak, and removing stains from your carpet.

Your real estate agent will be able to help you figure out what needs to be done. They should have the experience and insight to see your home through the eyes of potential buyers, letting you know any steps you can take to improve your chances of a quick sale.

Choose a Chiropractor

Ccializes in a hands-on, drugfree approach to health care that is best known for spine manipulation, but they also treat many other areas with techniques that have been proven safe and effective.

Increasingly, more health insur ance companies are providing coverage for chiropractors as either additional riders or a regular part of care.

People with unexplained aches and pains are among those who most frequently consult chiropractors. These professionals can help alleviate pain in your back, head or neck. Chiropractors believe that realigning your spine will help relieve pain and discomfort in the body.

It works for a lot of people. Many patients find immediate relief from pain before even leaving the chiropractor’s office. They report rapid improvements in their muscles, joints, bones and ligaments.

Chiropractic care can also improve your overall health. The

treatments chiropractors administer can treat minor ailments such as headaches and sinus pain.

Thinking about the following factors can help you find the right chiropractor for your needs.

QUALITY

According to the American Chiropractic Association, accredited chiropractors go through at least 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical training time combined. Students must spend four years in a pre-medical program, in addition to four or five years of professional training.

Not only do chiropractors study the body, they usually also study the muscular skeleton, pressure

points, bone and joints, and nerves. Finding a chiropractor with these studies under their belt can give you a better experience and results.

Prior to selecting a chiropractor, inquire about training and credentials. Make sure he or she is properly qualified, has a current license to practice, and has experience in the area you are looking for.

INSURANCE COVERAGE

Many insurance carriers include chiropractic care as part of their regular coverage.

Verify that your care will be covered. You might be offered a discount for choosing an “in-network” professional.

But if you don’t have insurance,

many chiropractors offer low cash rates or affordable plans to help patients. Even without health insurance, you can still find chiropractors offering quality, cost-effective care.

Check for discounts. Some chiropractors will offer incentive discounts for groups, referrals of new clients and other promotions.

GET REFERRALS

Someone in your social or professional network has likely received excellent care from a chiropractor. Ask family, friends and co-workers for referrals.

Inquire specifically about the chiropractor’s demeanor and schedule. Is it easy to make an appointment? Find out the chiropractor’s philosophy about health and other wellness issues. Some practitioners will suggest complementary forms of care, including massage.

Given the results it can provide, chiropractic care is affordable and worth the money. With time and effort, you are likely to find a quality chiropractor in your area.

Researching the chiropractors in your area will help ensure you get the type of care you want and need.

Choose a Holistic Wellness Center

People committed to holistic wellness recognize that health can’t be pigeon-holed into a bunch of specialties. They seek out places that look at the whole person and every aspect of health from their physical and mental state, their emotional and social experience and even their financial health.

The goal of a holistic wellness center is to examine all these areas to bring about the happiest, healthiest versions of ourselves. According to the American Holistic Health Association, people who practice holistic health care often choose lifestyle changes, noninvasive remedies and improving the flow of a person’s life-force energy to maintain health and heal from injury. If you’re looking for ways to learn more, look and feel great overall, a holistic wellness center could be a good option.

SERVICES OFFERED

A good wellness center will not only help you look and feel your best, but also keep you relaxed and energized to get through the pressures of life. They do this through

a variety of services such as skin care, massage and hair removal –things sometimes associated with spas and salons. They might also offer chiropractic care, counseling services, yoga, infrared saunas, halotherapy, cryotherapy, detox, nutrition counseling or craniosacral therapy.

Two popular hair-removal procedures are waxing and sugaring.

Waxing, the most popular method in the past, can be done in a spa-like setting that avoids the downsides of waxing at home. The best wellness centers offer a clean, peaceful, safe and private setting where specialists can take care of your hair-removal needs with precision and skill.

Sugaring has been growing in popularity for several reasons. It’s a sanitary process that doesn’t involve heat and uses only natural, biodegradable ingredients. It is a gentle but long-lasting way to remove hairs in the natural direction of growth while exfoliating dead skin cells at the same time.

A key advantage of sugaring is that it removes the tiniest hairs –down to just one sixteenth of an inch – and will allow the hair follicles to collapse after frequent treatments to leave you naturally hair-free.

Skin care and body treatments

are another way a good wellness center can make you look your best. A top-notch business will stock quality products that deliver facial and other skin-care rituals to keep your body looking and feeling young and vibrant.

Another service with a wide variety of benefits is massage. Along with the obvious upside –deep relaxation – a good massage can leave you feeling re-energized and ready to tackle any stresses in front of you. It’s been found to increase flexibility and remove toxins from the body.

Because each person’s body responds differently, the best wellness centers give you the option to customize your massages for your specific, individual needs. Different massage techniques include deep-tissue, Shiatsu, Swedish, Thai, lymphatic drainage, reflexology and sports massage. There are also different massage techniques for people who are pregnant or in the midst of cancer treatments.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

A good wellness center stands out for the skills and experience of its staff, something that starts with strong management.

Massage, skin care and hair removal all require specific skills, of course, but it also helps to have

Center for Holistic Health, Nutrition &

the right personality to make people feel at ease. A spa-like treatment is about the experience, not just the outcome, and it takes the right team of people with the right personalities to deliver that experience for customers.

Like any service business, a long track record in the community with many happy customers is a good sign. Ask your friends, family members and co-workers for their recommendations.

ATMOSPHERE

Finally, holistic wellness involves overall healing, not just a list of procedures. Having a relaxing, peaceful, clean feeling when you walk in the door can help you feel your best.

First impressions count for any business, and that’s especially true in wellness centers. The best ones will look and smell meticulously clean, and they’ll be designed in a way that transports you mentally and emotionally far from your everyday life. At their best, they’ll make you feel like you’re taking a fabulous vacation.

Look for a wellness center that makes you feel at home, in terms of both a welcoming sense when you walk in the door and a professional staff that puts you at ease.

HOW TO . . .

With each election, more states have made cannabis legal for either recreational or medicinal purposes. With these changes, cannabis has been one of the fastest growing industries in the country.

The increased legality of cannabis has more people willing to try it for the first time. They’re often met with an intimidating array of new vocabulary and options. It’s why doing a little research can help a person get the right product and have a good first experience.

Here are some things to consider about the strains, products and methods of consumption.

START SMALL

Just like with alcohol, no one knows their tolerance level for cannabis until they’ve experienced it firsthand.

First-time users should start out with small doses of cannabis and avoid the products with highly concentrated levels of THC, the chemical responsible for most of cannabis’s psychological effects. A low-dose edible or small amounts of flower are advisable for people trying cannabis for the first time.

DELIVERY METHODS

While the most widely known

Buy Cannabis

methods for delivering the effect of cannabis is smoking it, that’s only one of many ways people can enjoy it. Some of the options include:

• Joints: By rolling cannabis in paper, often made from hemp, rice and bamboo, the product can be smoked.

• Blunts: Rolling cannabis in cigar paper made from nicotine-filled tobacco plants gives it a unique flavor, but it adds health and medical risks that deter many health-conscious users.

• Hand pipes: Perhaps the most common smoking device available today, hand pipes are small and easy to use. They trap the smoke from burning cannabis, which the consumer can subsequently inhale.

• Water pipes: Devices such as bongs use liquid to cool the smoke from burning cannabis. Available in all shapes and sizes, water pipes offer a different sensation that some people consider more pleasant.

• Vaping: Health-conscious consumers often turn to products that deliver the chemicals from cannabis in a vaporized form. There are fixed models, which require a power source, and smaller portable versions that can easily be transported.

• Edibles: Foods or drinks containing cannabis are also available. They are known for having a significant psychoactive effect on the entire body. Be aware, though, that they have a longer onset time

compared to smoking or vaping, which deliver the cannabis chemicals to the blood stream much faster.

• Tinctures: For controlled dosage and fast effects, some consumers buy a liquid cannabis extract that can be placed under the tongue. A few drops of the product can be easily measured, and it offers a quick response as it is absorbed into the body.

• Ingestible Oils: Falling halfway between concentrates and edibles are oils that you can ingest. You swallow and digest them like food, but they offer consistent dosing like concentrates.

• Topical creams: While they don’t offer the same “high” as other methods, some consumers buy products that can be applied directly to the skin for localized relief. Many spas offer CBD massages.

Which delivery method you choose is largely based on personal preferences, including dietary restrictions and one’s proclivity or aversion to smoke.

GET EXPERT ADVICE

Just like asking an expert mixologist or sommelier for drink recommendations, most legal cannabis dispensaries have people on staff who are very knowledgeable about using the various products.

With so many strains, infusions, vaporizers and accessories to pick

from, getting expert advice in person can be a much better use of time than scouring the internet. If you want good answers, go straight to the source: people who know and use their products enjoyably.

It’s also a good idea to seek out medical advice about diet changes or substance use. As always, talk to a doctor about anything that could affect your health for the most reliable information. Medical professionals in areas where cannabis has recently been legalized will likely be prepared to offer healthy advice on the subject.

RESEARCH THE LAWS

Finally, if you want to stay out of legal trouble, it’s important to understand exactly what the law allows in your state.

Every state has different requirements for cannabis consumption, including when and where it can be consumed. There may be restrictions on the amount you can transport in your car, for example, and common-sense restrictions like not operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment while under the influence of cannabis. Some workplaces will still discipline employees if they test positive for cannabis in a drug test.

You should also know the rules when traveling on airlines or across state lines, as laws can differ from place to place and are rapidly changing as cannabis legalization continues to roll out.

HOW TO . . .

Choose an Eye Doctor

The eyes are the body’s windows to the world, which is why when something happens to fog or damage those windows, the right kind of care is important.

Sometimes vision problems can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses – whether in youth or much later in life.

Vision problems can be difficult to diagnose. While some may be easily corrected, sometimes permanently thanks to medical advancements, others have an underlying cause. That’s when you need to visit an eye specialist.

Whether you have never been to the eye doctor before or are searching for a new provider, it can be challenging to choose one. There are many experienced, qualified eye doctors who can help you achieve and maintain good ocular health; the trick to finding one is knowing what kind of eye doctor who can best serve your needs.

Getting your eyes checked often makes it possible to discover vision issues early. It can also help you identify vision problems you may not have even known you had. And catching and treating eye problems early will likely lead to better outcomes.

Choosing a right optometrist or ophthalmologist can be a challenge. Consider these aspects when doing your research.

INSURANCE

If you have health or vision insurance, check the list of doctors who are covered by your plan. Insurance companies make agreements with doctors or eye care specialists to deliver services at a prearranged price. Picking an

“in-network” doctor will save you money on your co-pay and out-ofpocket costs.

TYPES OF DOCTORS

While optometrists do not have medical degrees, they do have specialized training in diagnosing and treating vision and eye health-related problems. These professionals receive bachelor’s degrees before their four-year training programs. Optometrists can identify and diagnose a variety of eye disorders, including cataracts,

glaucoma and retinal disease. They can write prescriptions to

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who treat eye diseases. They have medical degrees along with their specialized training for eye treatment. Their extensive background typically includes four years of pre-med school, four years of medical school, at least one year of an internship and three years of residency before receiving their ophthalmology license. Along with treating vision problems, they provide medical and surgical care,

and even plastic surgery.

TRAINING

Eye doctors often specialize in certain diseases or treatments. If you have been diagnosed with glaucoma, for instance, you can find a doctor who has experience specifically treating that disease. Be sure to ask eye doctors about their experiences treating specific diseases and conditions.

REFERENCES

Your family doctor or general practitioner may know the good eye doctors in your area. Doctors often refer patients to an eye care specialist that has the most experience treating specific needs. Friends and family can also provide helpful advice. They can tell you who they used for their previous eye exams. They can also provide insight about any issues and tell you who works well with children.

SELECTION

Many people are particular about their eyeglass frames, lenses or contacts. If you already know what you need – such as glasses from a particular designer – look for an eye doctor who has access to that brand. You can also see their stock of eyeglass frames to make sure they carry the style you desire. When purchasing glasses, it is nice to have a wide range of products to view. Lenses and frames can vary in terms of comfort, appearance, price and quality. The better the selection, the more likely you will find that perfect pair of glasses.

Don’t let yourself miss out on all the beauty and fun in the world. See your local eye doctor now and keep that window of sight clear.

Choose a Pain Management Doctor

Living with pain is a difficult thing to do, but many people suffer from chronic or persistent pain because of diseases, accidents, injuries or the results of surgery. When this occurs, they often turn to pain management doctors who can access many different techniques to help ease the intensity of what is being suffered.

Ideally, health professionals attempt to ease persistent pain through a combination of rest, exercise and over-the-counter medications. But if you’ve already tried these options, or if your physician has referred you to a specialist, a pain management doctor can help you find the best solutions to temporary or chronic pain. Here are some things to consider.

KNOW THEIR BACKGROUND

Like any medical professionals, the more you can find out about the doctor’s credentials, licenses and specific areas of practice, the more informed your health-care decisions will be.

Start by checking with your state medical board for any public information about the physician. Most states will have a database with basic details, including where the doctor went to school and any board certifications they hold. They may also be able to report whether the doctor has past or pending disciplinary actions.

Beyond those basics, it’s a good idea for you to find a doctor with a background and scope of practice that fits your needs. Some doctors may have particularly strong experience in dealing with back pain, headaches, abdominal pain or joint pain, for example.

If you find a doctor with extensive experience successfully treating your specific condition, you’ll have extra peace of mind.

VARIETY OF OPTIONS

While many people associate pain doctors with prescription medications, that’s just one tool at their disposal.

Modern pharmaceuticals can indeed be highly effective, but the right doctor can help you implement a plan to find the right one or the right combination to work best for you. They’ll also be able to help you minimize the risk of pharmaceutical addictions, a

well-publicized problem for some people dealing with chronic pain.

In addition to prescription drugs, today’s pain specialists have a wide array of procedures and therapies available to help their patients. Nerve blocks, joint injections, spinal cord stimulation, epidural injections, physical therapy and even psychological counseling can all help with different types of pain.

Ideally, you’ll find a doctor who can and frequently does treat pain using many of those options, not just medication. In many cases, pain is treated most effectively through a combination of different techniques.

CONVENIENCE

While a close-to-home location is ideal for any service, it’s especially important when picking a doctor for pain management.

If your condition makes it painful to walk, move or simply sit up, finding a doctor within a short driving distance can be critical. A good pain management physician will keep your comfort and convenience in mind, including creating an easy path from the parking lot to their office. In some cases, they may be able to provide part of the treatment through telehealth

appointments so you don’t have to leave your home.

INSURANCE CONSIDERATIONS

To keep your out-of-pocket costs in check, it’s a good idea to verify that the pain doctor accepts your insurance plan, Medicare or Medicaid. It’s smart to know your financial responsibility before you show up at the doctor’s office so there are no surprises.

Quality Service

Finally, in addition to the skills and experience of the doctor, a professional and courteous office staff can make a big difference in your overall experience as a patient.

A well-run medical office will be clean and organized. Their staff will answer phone calls and return messages promptly. They’ll be good communicators to let you know what to expect in terms of paperwork and appointment scheduling, along with delivering clear information about any follow-up appointments or instructions after your office visit.

With some research and care, you can have peace of mind when picking a doctor to make your pain more manageable.

WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING SERVICES:

Choose a Medical Equipment Provider

Home medical equipment helps people with chronic conditions or disabilities to continue to live full, rich lives. Their medical equipment providers help them find the tools they need such as oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or breathing aids.

Your first step in deciding what medical equipment is best for you will be talking to your doctor about your situation and specific need. Some medical equipment may require a doctor’s recommendation for insurance approval.

Once you’ve spoken with your doctor, here are some tips for picking the highest quality medical equipment available.

RESPIRATION EXPERTISE

People with respiratory problems should look for a medical equipment provider whose staff has training and expertise with CPAP machines and supplies, bottled oxygen and other equipment.

A certified respiratory therapist can guide you on how to use the equipment safely and effectively.

Choose a company that delivers

the correct supplies at the right time and that employs skilled and compassionate people.

PERSONAL SERVICE

Locally based providers are always best. You are likely to receive personalized service. They can also respond quickly in case of trouble.

Equipment fails and supplies run out. When your provider is in your community, you can usually reach someone right away.

A local provider can send someone quickly. Larger companies may stock supplies a few hundred miles away. That means you may have to wait days for a technician or urgently needed supplies to arrive.

GOVERNMENT BILLING

Medicare and Medicaid often cover medical equipment and supplies. Choose a provider who is experienced in handling patient billing for these plans. Government regulations and documentation are often complicated. There are deadlines to meet and rules to follow. The equipment provider may be able to bill Medicare or Medicaid directly, which lessens the deductible you will have to pay. It also speeds up the entire billing process.

MOBILITY EXPERTISE

When you are dealing with mobility issues, look for a provider with experience in mobility aids.

If you need medical supplies or have questions about how to navigate difficult conversations regarding them, we would be happy to help you.

They should offer you a wide range of walkers, scooters and wheelchairs.

While you may only need a simple cane now, you might need more advanced aids in the future.

Creating a good working relationship with a medical equipment provider will help you as your needs change.

OTHER SUPPLIES

Choose a company that carries a wide array of medical supplies.

In the future, you might need diabetic shoes, hosiery and supplies, home oxygen, CPAP machines and supplies, and other types of treatment and monitoring equipment. Choose a medical equipment provider who becomes familiar with your needs over the years and who can develop a sense of you as a person.

Speak with your doctor and staff about good companies in your area. Their recommendations will help you find the right company for your needs.

A good track record of customer service, the ability to handle Medicare and Medicaid billing, and trained staff should be the factors to guide you in your search for an excellent medical equipment provider.

Choose a Pilates Studio

Selecting the right Pilates studio is no small task. With the growing emphasis on body positivity, mindfulness and rehabilitation, many fitness seekers desire more than just a rigorous workout routine.

UNDERSTANDING HOLISTIC FITNESS

Holistic fitness combines physical training with mindfulness and emotional well-being. A Pilates studio that prioritizes holistic fitness focuses not just on toning muscles or enhancing flexibility but also on fostering a positive relationship with one’s body and promoting overall wellness.

LOOKING FOR BODY POSITIVITY

Body positivity in a fitness context means celebrating all bodies, regardless of shape, size, age or ability. A body-positive Pilates studio will foster an environment where everyone feels comfortable, welcome and free from judgment. Instructors should motivate you to work towards your personal fitness

goals, not an unrealistic or onesize-fits-all body ideal.

PRIORITIZING REHABILITATION AND INJURY PREVENTION

Pilates can be an excellent method for rehabilitation after injury or for injury prevention due to its focus on core strength, flexibility and balance. Look for a studio where instructors are knowledgeable about safe practices and modifications and where individual limitations and needs are respected and accommodated.

STUDIO CONSIDERATIONS

When choosing a Pilates studio, several practical considerations come into play. These include the studio’s location and schedule, the cost of classes and the types of classes offered.

Make sure the studio’s hours and location are convenient for you, and that the cost is sustainable for your budget. A variety of classes can keep your routine interesting and help you to continually challenge yourself.

The quality and approach of the instructors is a critical aspect of any Pilates studio. Check if the instructors have comprehensive certification and ongoing education in Pilates, and if they have specific training in rehabilitation if that is important to you.

CLASS SIZE

Class size is another essential factor. Smaller classes typically mean more individual attention and personalized instruction, which is particularly crucial for those focusing on injury prevention or rehabilitation.

PRIVATES: ONE-ON-ONE CLASSES

Pilates studios that offer privates, meaning one-on-one, classes

are often sought after.

One-on-one classes make Pilates accessible to people with specific needs.

Pilates studios that require you to begin with private lessons are good to look for because they will introduce you to the equipment and get a better understanding of your specific needs.

FACILITY AND EQUIPMENT

The physical facility matters, too. A good Pilates studio should be clean and have a calm, welcoming atmosphere. It should also be well-equipped with Pilates equipment.

The quality and maintenance of this equipment also speak volumes about the studio’s commitment to providing a quality experience.

Finding a Pilates studio that aligns with your specific goals and needs can greatly enhance your fitness journey. Body positivity, a holistic approach, and a focus on rehabilitation and injury prevention are key elements to look for.

When these are combined with a convenient location, suitable class sizes, qualified instructors, and a quality facility, you’ll have found a studio that can support you on your path to holistic fitness and well-being.

Choose a Pizza Place

Apizza can be more than a simple meal –it can be an experi ence. A combination of quality, taste, convenience and value can make the dif ference between a forgettable fast food run and a memora ble pizza moment.

Here’s what to consider when choosing your next pizza.

FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS

Family-owned businesses often bring unique value to the table. With personal investment and tra ditions that may span generations, these establishments usually prior itize customer satisfaction and quality. Supporting these businesses also helps local economies thrive.

QUALITY AT A GREAT PRICE

Value is more than just low prices. It’s about getting high-quality pizza at a fair price. The best pizza places offer premium quality without breaking the bank, making them go-to spots for pizza lovers.

HIGH-QUALITY INGREDIENTS

Great pizza starts with great ingredients. High-quality cheese, sauces, meats and vegetables can elevate a pizza from good to outstanding. Choose pizza places that commit to using the best ingredients on all their menu items, not just their specialty pies.

UNIQUE FLAVOR CHARACTERISTICS

The best pizza has a flavor profile that’s distinct and memorable. Look for pizza places that offer unique flavor characteristics –whether it’s a signature sauce, an exceptional blend of cheeses or a

topping combination you can’t find anywhere else.

HAND-STRETCHED CRUST

The crust is the foundation of any pizza. Hand-stretched crust often results in a texture that’s perfectly chewy on the inside and crisp on the outside. It’s another sign of the craftsmanship that can set a pizza apart.

EASY ONLINE ORDERING

In today’s digital age, convenience is a significant factor in the dining experience. Pizza places that offer easy online ordering allow you to customize your order, review your choices and schedule delivery or pickup, all from the comfort of your own home.

CONCLUSION

Choosing your next pizza involves more than just picking toppings. Consider the quality of the ingredients, the distinctiveness of the flavors, the craft behind the crust, and convenience of ordering. Above all, remember that the best pizza offers more than sustenance – it provides an experience. So, next time you’re craving a slice, take a moment to choose wisely. Your tastebuds will thank you.

Know if Dental Implants are Right for You

No matter how well a person cares for their teeth, age and acci dents can cause tooth loss, decay and disease at some point in life.

No matter how you encounter dental problems, the loss of teeth, decay and the pain associated with periodontal disease can cause sig nificant distress. When those problems develop to encompass most teeth, dentists often advise patients to consider dental implants.

Modern dental implants feature titanium fixtures that replace the root of natural teeth. It anchors the artificial ceramic teeth to the upper and lower jaw and forms a firm bond that ensures you can chew normally and maintain jawbone density and integrity.

Whether it’s an implant for one tooth, several or all your teeth, implants look and feel natural, and restore your ability to eat comfortably. They also build confidence, allowing you to smile more without embarrassment, improving your overall lifestyle.

Here’s some facts about dental implants and what to consider before choosing treatment.

IMPLANTS VS. DENTURES

Implants today look more realistic than ever. They can easily fit within the jawbone, which will fuse to the implant. While they are more expensive, implants tend to be a much better investment than

dentures.

They will also offer more stability than dentures. Implants are integrated into the jawbone, giving you a more natural smile.

Implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support, which means you don’t have to lose other teeth to keep the implants in place.

If you have ill-fitting dentures, consider implants. You will likely feel more comfortable, and they are easy to maintain.

DENTAL ASSESSMENT

The first step in deciding

whether implants are a good option for you is to get a complete dental health assessment.

Candidates need healthy gums and bone tissue for the dental implants to be secured to the jawbone. A dentist can verify that you have no health conditions that would limit your ability to receive the implants.

A dental specialist such as an endodontist, oral surgeon, periodontist or prosthodontist can help you. The professional should have specialized training and expertise to do the procedure.

Your initial assessment includes

a full dental exam, including documentation of your medical and dental histories. They will take X-rays and perhaps a CT scan to ensure that there is adequate bone density, as well as check the shape

If you don’t have enough gum tissue in your mouth, the dentist may have to perform dental bone grafts to strengthen the area where the implant will be placed. It is always preferable to have healthy dental bone and gum tissue before performing the dental implant

If you use tobacco, you will probably be asked to quit before receiving the implant. Tobacco users are not usually considered good candidates for dental implants because their bone and gum tissue tends to be weaker than

Generally, if you can answer yes to the following questions, you are a good dental implant candidate:

1. Are you in overall good health?

2. Do you have healthy gums and enough bone density to anchor the implants in the jaw?

3. Will you take care of your implanted teeth and general dental health on a daily basis?

4. Can you maintain a schedule of regular dental check-ups?

If you have insurance, it may cover your dental implants. Check with your policy before proceeding.

Implants can be a comfortable, natural way to get your beautiful smile back and keep it for years to come.

Americans are more likely than ever to choose cremation over burial. As of 2015, more people chose cremation over burial. While every end-of-life choice is intensely personal, there are many overall reasons why people choose this, from cost to environmental reasons.

Cremation costs are typically less than half what traditional burials are. The National Funeral Directors Association predicts that cremation will be the norm by 2040 with traditional burial at just a fraction of all choices.

Deciding between a traditional burial and cremation requires many factors.

First and foremost are the wishes of your loved one. Many people have an end-of-life plan in which they’ve communicated how they wish their body to be disposed of.

Making decisions in advance about cremation services can take the burden off loved ones during a painful time. Otherwise, they will need to make tough choices while stressed and grieving.

With cremation, the family

doesn’t have to purchase an expensive casket. Loved ones may spend more money than they can afford to respect the memory of the deceased.

But a cremation service is an affordable way to respectfully memorialize a friend or family member. The service can be a peaceful time to grieve and remember.

A funeral home may have a

partnership or connection with a cremation center. They may have additional services, such as grief counseling or assistance with necessary paperwork.

After the cremation, you will receive an urn. You can choose to bury the urn, keep it in your home or place it in a memorial building.

When searching for a cremation center, check with your family or friends for referrals. If you cannot

get an appropriate referral, you might be able to join a cremation society. For a small fee, you will receive up-to-date information about your options and the process. Membership may also help you obtain a lower cost on cremation services. These societies will aid with many details connected to the service and disposition of remains.

The Internet Cremation Society and the Cremation Society of North America are sources of information about cremation

Once you have narrowed your choices, consider how you feel about the staff of the cremation center. You should feel comfortable asking questions. The employees should be knowledgeable, competent and pleasant. They should give you all the details about price breakdowns, and their process of making ashes for the urn.

By doing a little research and choosing wisely, you can make the process a little easier for loved ones during a difficult time.

Discuss with your loved ones and family members their preference for when they pass. Talk with them and explain your own so that there will not be any misunderstandings or second-guessing after the fact.

Look for in an Assisted Living Center

Assisted living centers exist to help people who cannot manage daily life tasks without help, whether it is because of age, an injury, a physical or cognitive disabil ity or surgeries and rehabili tation. Assisted living centers can help with such things as dressing, bathing, providing meals or helping to manage medications. Others provide transportation or social activities.

Because Americans are living longer than ever before, the assisted living facility industry has experienced dramatic growth. There are now more facilities than ever before that are better-equipped to provide almost every type of care, from basic help to more complicated medical needs.

But leaving your loved one in the care of someone besides yourself or family is a big decision, and there are many factors to consider before taking this step – not least of which is safety.

If possible, you’ll want to involve your loved one with all the decisions that go into choosing a facility. After all, their overall happiness

will only improve their lives and go a long way to helping them enjoy themselves and others at the facility.

Start your journey by developing a list of priorities important to your loved one and you, such as degree of care, environment and distance, among others.

PERSONAL CARE

Ask your loved one’s personal physician how much care is required to function safely. The doctor may even be able to guide you toward an appropriate facility. Be sure to seek advice on what qualifications and certifications you need to look for in the center’s staff. The center’s employees should be well-qualified to handle medical needs.

If you monitor medical care, you can avoid paying for extensive services that your loved one may not need. Understanding the care the person requires will help you find a center that is a good fit.

AMENITIES

Accommodations at these centers can range from luxurious, detached cottages to cozy condominiums or smaller apartment-style rooms. It all depends on what you are looking for, what you can afford, and what is available.

As you visit the facilities, try to personalize each space. Imagine how your loved one’s belongings might fit into the area and where decorations will be placed. Does the atmosphere bring about a feeling of peace and tranquility? How are the rooms decorated? Are they tasteful and soothing, or do they remind you of a hospital setting?

Look at the home amenities and consider how you would feel about living there. Would you want your loved one living there? Is the facility within your budget?

Recreation and activities

Game and meeting areas can help the resident make new friends and keep them from feeling alone and lonely. Leaving the confines of their units is an important part of

improving quality of life. Make sure the center offers activities and space to occupy your loved one’s time.

Quality facilities will have activities that match his or her hobbies. If your family member enjoys crafts, then look for a center with a designated craft area or classes for your loved one to enjoy.

GARDENS AND LANDSCAPING

The landscaping of an assisted living center can give you a good indication about the quality of the facility. A well-maintained lawn and garden is a positive sign.

If the prospective resident enjoys spending time in nature, look for a facility that has park-like areas. Some centers have community-style gardens and walkways for residents.

Just being able to experience nature as it grows and changes with the seasons can be uplifting and soothing. An assisted living center with a manicured lawn and garden can make a huge difference in the quality of life for a loved one.

Choosing an assisted living facility is about finding the right combination of medical services and amenities. With research and thought, you will find the perfect place to bring comfort and care to your loved one.

Choose a Travel Agent

Even today when most people book their own travel using various online services and websites, a travel agent can still provide service and find discounts that most people can’t get on their own.

Certified travel professionals have an edge over the digital world. They work for you to ensure you’ve got the best deal and back up their bookings with personal service that can’t be achieved when booking online by yourself.

Travel agents are professionals who know every trick in the book when it comes to ensuring a trip will go smoothly. For a fee, these agents will plan every aspect of your trip, meaning you can relax and enjoy without the stress of planning. Best of all, if something goes wrong, your agent will be a phone call away with a fix.

Here’s how to find a good travel agent:

WHAT TO KNOW

Eleven states require travel agents to be state-licensed. Many of these states only require the agency to have a license and pay a fee. These stipulations offer no real

protection for travelers. There are some other ways you can discover whether a travel agent is competent, knowledgeable and honest.

First, find out whether the agency is a member of the American Society of Travel Agents or the Association of Retail Travel Agents. Then, ask whether the agent is a member of a travel consortium. Members of a consortium have strong negotiating power and will often have access to better travel deals.

Ask for references from clients and wholesale suppliers. When you

contact these suppliers, talk to the sales manager. Ask that person questions about their relationship with the agency.

Of course, a travel agency should have emergency contact information that is good 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The agency should also have a toll-free phone number. If you plan on traveling internationally, choose an agency that allows you to contact them for free if problems arise.

It is usually best to work with only one agent. That person should have a phone extension and email.

SPECIALIZED TRAVEL

Anyone traveling overseas should have up-to-the-minute information about political conditions. Good agents provide their clients with such information.

High-rise and specialized vacations require specific knowledge and reputable vendors. Good travel agents will provide plenty of options. They will also have information about travel warnings from the U.S. State Department.

Cruise passengers can also receive great deals when using a travel agent. Members of the Cruise Line Society of Travel Agents can offer substantial savings or deals.

But no matter what kind of travel you are doing, a skilled travel agent will have access to information about safety standards and industry reputations. They can help you steer clear of fraudulent vendors and scams.

Whether you are planning a relaxing vacation or adventurous escape, your time away can be an amazing experience. Talented travel agents can provide needed guidance and support. They will take care of the details so you can kick back and enjoy your time away.

Choose a Church

Choosing a church is a very personal decision because faith is per sonal. Whether you’re moving to a new city, you are newly faithful or converted, or you wish to join new con gregation, your choice will reflect your beliefs and accommodate any subsets of beliefs you subscribe to.

Because there are literally hun dreds of denominations existing in the United States – maybe multi ples of the same denomination in some cities – choosing the “right” church can present a challenge. But denomination, of course, is not the only factor to consider when choosing a church.

At its heart, a church is a group of like-minded people who share a set of beliefs, values and norms. In most of the cases, the members feel as though they belong to a large, extended family and offer support, encouragement and emotional and material assistance to each other.

Growing in faith should be one of the goals in attending church services where fellowship can help you along. The right church can provide a foundation for your spiritual life. It could also be a boon for

your social and personal life.

Pray to God for guidance while you look for a church, then determine what setting is important to you. Are you looking for a lessformal, more modern church with energetic sermons? Do you need an intimate community or a mega-church?

Do you have a particular faith?

If you are a Methodist, Baptist or Lutheran, being surrounded by people with similar beliefs will be

important. Or do you prefer a non-denominational church?

Once you understand your needs, conduct some research. Look in your local newspaper, online or drive around your city.

Ask friends and relatives about the churches they attend. People are often happy to discuss their experiences with you.

Once you have found some possibilities, visit several churches. Attend services with a positive

attitude and ask questions of the members. Gather as much information as you can.

Sometimes having a friend along will help you feel more at ease. Speak to people sitting near you, or speak to the pastor after the service. Take home any literature

Afterward, reflect on your experience. Does the church’s statement of belief match yours?

Sometimes churches are known for their service to the community. If volunteer work is important to you, find a religious community that has programs for soup kitchens, homeless shelters or even local

Were you comfortable sitting in the church or were you itching to leave? Did the pastor hold your attention or were you bored?

Knowing your values will help you select the right church. Worship and spirituality are deeply personal. Sometimes different family members may attend different churches.

When you find a church where the pastor or minister seems to be speaking to you and the congregation feels like family, you have found the place where you will be the most comfortable and get the most out of the experience.

Choose a Heat Pump

Hthe home in the winter and out of your home during the hot summer.

However, even with the highest quality units, it’s possible for them to leak from time to time, and there are a number of factors that can contribute to the issue. It’s no need for immediate alarm, but a leaking  addressed by a heat pump repair expert. Ignoring a leak from your heat pump can lead to mold infes tation, water damage in your home, and damage to the heat pump itself. Standing water within it can cause electrical issues and further breakdown, as well.

Following are some of the most common causes of heat pump leaks:

The cold evaporator coil in a heat pump collects condensation from the air, draining it into a pan that then leads to another drain. When this evaporator coil gets dirty, it can cause water to drip onto the ground and malfunction.

During the summer, if refriger ant levels drop to low, ice can actu ally form on the coils. This not only impairs the cooling process, but it also keeps your heat pump in Contra Costa from working properly. So, what creates the leaking water with frozen evaporator coils? The puddles of water you see are caused by the ice on those coils melting, in this case.

DRAIN ISSUES

Most heat pumps use that drain

pan mentioned above to collect condensation. However, should this drip pan become clogged with anything from algae to mold to debris, it might overflow and create a puddle near your heat pump. If the condensation pan is set incorrectly or the drain line gets clogged, water will overflow and cause that leak you see. Usually, your pump will automatically shut off before

this happens; however, the problem will still need to be addressed by  our HVAC experts in Solano before you can run your heat pump again.

A CRACKED OVERFLOW PAN

Heat pumps pull humidity out of the air as part of the cooling process – much like air

conditioners. This humidity collects on the coils and drips to the overflow pain or drains. Over time, that pan could start to deteriorate or corrode, leading to it cracking. A leak you see could be caused by this cracked pan.

Addressing small issues with your heat pump before they become bigger, more expensive issues is always a good idea.

Choose a Tankless Water Heater

Tankless water heaters are the “next big thing” across the Bay Area, and for good reason. Heating water in our homes for bathing, cooking and other uses accounts for about 30% of a home’s total energy usage, so it’s easy to see why people are very interested in conserving as much of that energy as possible. If you have a home with multiple people or you have a large tub to fill, this product is for

One of the biggest reasons people are attracted to the idea of installing a tankless water heater in their homes is the fact that heated water will then be available “on demand”. Hot water is not stored in a tank and kept warm continuously by a gas flame, as it is with standard gas tank units. In contrast, with a tankless unit, water isn’t heated until the need for it arises. These tankless units most commonly operate on natural gas or propane. Less energy is consumed because they eliminate the costs associated with keeping 40+ gallons of hot water on reserve on a consistent basis. In addition, monthly savings from switching to an energy-efficient tankless unit can be up to 40% off utility bills, making these units an investment that pays for itself over time.

Efficiency ratings are up to 30% more efficient vs. a traditional tank heater, too.

Since water isn’t stored in a tank, but instead is heated on demand, tankless water heaters provide a continuous supply of hot water. No more running out of the shower from cold water, or waiting hours to replenish a household’s supply of heated water in the tank after laundry has been done. Families no longer have to time their showers or schedule everyone according to the availability of hot water –it’s always available with a tankless unit. These units also take up much less space than the conventional tank units do, and can also be mounted on a wall or even installed outdoors.

Standard tank units require that water be stored in them and wait for demand before they are used. As such, tanks can often accumulate rust, scale and calcium, settling at the bottom of the tanks and infiltrating the water. With tankless water heaters (upon regular flushing), there is no health risk from using water that has been sitting in any type of contaminated tank, and there is also no worry of a tankless heater rusting through on the bottom, spilling 40 or more gallons of water all over your home!

In addition, tankless water heater models are equipped with safety features that prevent overly hot water from reaching faucets in the home, greatly reducing the risk of scalding and burns.

Choose Waterproof Luxury Vinyl Flooring

When it comes to flooring options, many people are attracted to the natural look of wood or wood plank flooring for its beauty and texture. But if you’re looking for flooring in areas such as bathrooms, kitchens and basements, where the chances for water damage are increased, wood flooring my not be your be choice.

Fortunately, waterproof luxury vinyl flooring can provide the best of both worlds. It provides resistance to water damage and comes in a variety of styles and colors that mimic the look of wood, stone and decorative patterns.

While it’s available in a wide variety of colors, textures and styles, the most common type is vinyl planks that look like wood. The best luxury vinyl flooring also looks and feels remarkably similar to wood, with a grooved texture on the surface that reflects light and leaves the impression of real wood under your feet.

It also has the same ease of installation as laminate flooring, usually with interlocking pieces that can be laid in place by professional installers or experienced

do-it-yourself homeowners.

Here are some things to consider when shopping for waterproof luxury vinyl flooring.

LOOK AND FEEL

The first question to answer is one about style: What’s going to look best in your home?

Fortunately, the materials and looks available in luxury vinyl floors are almost endless. From a clean, modern, contemporary floor to the rustic warm look of barn wood, and everything in between, vinyl flooring can complement your unique sense of style.

It’s a good idea to see samples of the floor in your home so you can see how it will look in your actual lighting and how it will coordinate with your paint, furniture, window coverings and overall decor.

Just like with wood planks, the direction you lay the floor can make a big difference to the feel of the room. Whether you run it against the longest wall, the shortest wall or diagonally, you should be cognizant of how the direction of the flooring will change the feel of your space.

THICKNESS AND PROTECTION

Vinyl flooring comes in a wide range of materials, too.

One of the biggest differences

between brands and types of vinyl is the thickness of the flooring. Thicker vinyl will feel stiffer, more substantial and more like natural wood when you step on it. A thicker vinyl plank can also help hide imperfections in the subfloor, too.

Typically, the vinyl floor layer is covered by a protective layer that is designed to keep it from showing wear. This clear coat applied to the top – often called a “wear layer” –is available in different thicknesses that offer more or less protection.

The more foot traffic your floor receives, the more important it is for you to choose an appropriately thick and durable wear layer to protect your flooring investment for years to come.

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

Every vinyl flooring material has its own specific installation requirements. You should know these up front for several reasons.

One, it can affect the overall cost of your flooring project. If you choose flooring that requires expensive underlayment and specialized techniques for installation, it’s going to take more time and money to install.

Some flooring materials come with the underlayment attached, while others require it to be laid separately. Some use adhesive

strips to bond planks together at the edges. Some have interlocking edges very similar to laminate wood flooring.

In addition, if your flooring is not installed exactly how the manufacturer recommends, it could void your warranty. For the longest life and best peace of mind, always follow the flooring manufacturer’s installation method precisely –including preparation of the subfloor, if needed.

WARRANTY

That brings you to one last consideration: the warranty protection.

Find out what kind of warranty your flooring company offers, both on the materials and the labor if there are any issues that require repair or replacement in the future.

A warranty is only as good as the company that promises it, so it’s a good idea to pick both an installer and a flooring material from a well-known company that has a long track record of happy customers.

In general, higher priced, higher quality flooring will come with longer warranties, but that’s not the only thing to consider. Find out the specifics of what the warranty covers, too. The thoroughness of a warranty matters as much – if not more than – the length.

Choose a Painting Contractor

Professional painting contractors can spruce up your home with a new paint job that can transform your room, or even your entire house. They can save you time and provide you with a professional look down to the smallest detail.

If it’s time for a fresh coat of paint on your home, shop around and make sure you’re working with a reputable painting company who employs talented and skilled painters.

Here a few things to keep in mind as you vet potential painters.

PREVIOUS WORK

When looking for a painting contractor, one of the first things to consider is their previous work. It will give you a good indication of the quality you can expect.

For exterior paint jobs, ask the contractor for a list of buildings they have painted in the past. You can inspect their work yourself by visiting the location. A quality paint job should last for several years without showing signs of deterioration.

Samples of interior work can be

more difficult to review. Paint contractors may offer photos of their previous jobs, but it is usually better to ask your friends and family who have painted the interiors of their homes.

When you see work you like, try to get contact information for the contractor. You may also get references from realtors or builders in your area since they have relationships with contractors.

DESIGN HELP

The best painting contractors will help you avoid the costly mistake of choosing wrong colors for your home. A shade that is too light, dark or just “off” can ruin an otherwise good paint job.

True professionals will be patient with you. They will put several options on the wall so you can decide the best color and

sheen. They will develop good relationships with you and an interior designer, if you’ve hired one.

Some painters are as good at design as they are at applying the paint, so it helps to find one with these extra skills as you plan your project.

DETAILS

Consider all the details before signing a contract.

Request all the specifications in writing. This contract should include deadlines, along with specifying costs and materials to be used.

When you have narrowed your choices down to one or two contractors, ask plenty of questions. Inquire about what kind of insurance policy they carry, who will be doing the work at your home and what kind of preparations need to be made. If they are working on the interior of your home, you will likely need to move or protect your furniture before they arrive for the job.

The answers to these questions can help you feel more confident in the painting contractor you’ve chosen and feel good about the job that will be done. Then you can relax while your home gets an updated, fresh new look.

Choose a Solar Energy Company

Solar energy isn’t new, but with increased tax credits and more affordable options, homeowners are realizing that it’s a good choice to make for heating a home.

Picking a good solar company can make the transition from non-renewable energy to more eco-friendly options smoother. They can share the many options now available for installing solar panels – no matter what part of the country you live in. Harnessing the power of the sun, solar panels are safe and effective. They save money and create a healthy environment.

But choosing a company to fit your home or business with solar panels isn’t a one-stop proposition. Innovation and advancements are constantly driving competition, and choosing among the many installation companies requires some investigation to save time, money and energy.

Here are some things to consider when choosing a solar company.

REPUTATION

In a fast-growing industry like solar energy, it’s especially important to know the reputation of the company you’re dealing with. New companies may be showing up in the marketplace, but that doesn’t mean they’ll necessarily offer the best service or be around long enough to support their product line years from now.

Look for stability in your solar installer. Find a company that has developed a great reputation over many years with a long track record of satisfied customers from projects similar in scope to yours.

THE SYSTEM

There are a wide range of solar panel systems on the market, and the technology itself is going to be a big part of your decision. Your solar system can be tied to the existing electrical grid or completely off the grid, for example, which will require different equipment and setups.

No matter what system you decide on, the key thing you’ll be looking for is efficiency, and that means understanding both the energy generated and the cost of doing so.

Some solar systems generate power more efficiently than others, depending on their design and the type of materials they’re made from. And price efficiency can matter, too, because you don’t want to find yourself spending a whole lot more money for just a tiny increase in power. Likewise, if a slightly bigger investment can yield a large boost in energy generated, it can make sense to spend the extra money, especially if you can sell the energy back to local utility companies.

Look closely at the math, and pick the system that gives you the best return for your money. Many solar systems will pay for themselves over a number of years, so choosing one to be installed by a well-regarded company can be a wise financial move.

OTHER SERVICES

Homeowners or commercial users will often want more than just solar panels installed. If you think that’s a possibility, you can look for a company that offers a range of services, such as radiant heat systems and solar thermal systems.

And if you’re doing construction that will have solar components, look for a solar company that can serve as your general contractor. The bigger the project, the more important it is to have the solar systems integrated into the design and construction from start to finish, not added on as an afterthought by a contractor that doesn’t typically incorporate solar elements into their projects.

If the company is familiar with construction methods that will

increase the structure’s overall efficiency, too, that’s even better.

FINANCING OPTIONS

Finally, a good solar company will present you with a wide range of options to help you pay for the upgrades.

They should be familiar with all types of government incentive programs and willing to help walk you through the process of getting them. Federal programs are available to consumers who install solar panels on their homes, and additional state and local incentives are sometimes available. Make sure you thoroughly understand all these programs, though, because their requirements can be complex and important to follow exactly.

In addition to the help from government programs, there are three ways buyers typically purchase their systems:

Paying cash: The simplest and most direct way of paying for your system, cash buyers may be eligible for a 30 percent tax credit from the federal government along with other rebates that can reduce the installation cost up to 50 percent in total.

Loans: Both home equity loans and unsecured solar loans may be available to help you purchase a solar system. Some solar companies offer loans for up to 20 years, while home equity loans may have the benefit of letting you deduct the interest from your income taxes.

Leases: You may also be able to lease your solar system with no down payment or upfront costs. A solar lease will let you make affordable monthly payments to pay for your system, perhaps even including a performance guarantee and scheduled maintenance services included in the monthly cost.

Choose a Flooring Dealer

There are so many options when it comes to flooring that finding a flooring professional is a no-brainer. A flooring dealer can guide you through the maze of materials that make up modern flooring, whether carpet, tile, lino leum, concrete, ceramic or porcelain tile, vinyl tile, wood, laminate or plank vinyl.

What you choose depends on the room, maintenance consider ations and traffic, as well as aes thetic considerations. Most flooring dealers stock many of the popular options or can order them, and you’ll likely discover there are many dealers in this competitive business, so choosing the right dealer is key to your decisions.

Getting the service and value you seek from an expensive and long-term investment requires you consult a reputable, professional flooring dealer with a history of meeting client needs with not only sales but support and service.

Here are some things to consider as you shop for flooring.

When picking the best flooring

and respective dealer, longevity, not price, should be your guide. Everyone wants the best price possible, but it’s important to consider these factors as well:

What if something happens in 10 years and you have no warranty to repair or replace the damage? Or if the installers make a mistake and leave your flooring permanently damaged?

So be sure to look at additional

support and services. Find a dealer who has a great reputation and long track record of excellent customer service. Spending extra money is worth purchasing a product from a flooring dealer you can trust. You aren’t just buying flooring. You are also creating a relationship.

When looking for a flooring dealer, look on the internet or your local newspaper.

On the internet, you can find review sites to see how local flooring dealers compare. You can also check advertisements in your local newspaper to find specials and

Be sure to check with the Better Business Bureau to see whether the company has had any complaints lodged against it. If so, look to see how they were resolved. You might also check with the Chamber of Commerce.

After making a list of potential dealers you are considering, give each of them a call. Inquire about the background of the company and how long they’ve been in business. You may ask for referrals from previous customers for references.

Find out about the installation services they use and the dealer’s reliability. Do they use in-company groups or outside contractors? Also, find out about prices and warranty coverage.

If you visit their offices, they might even show you a scrapbook of prior work.

Experience should play a role in which company you ultimately select. Quality of materials, comparable or lower prices and good references will all make a big difference in finding the right flooring dealer.

Choose a Garden Center

Experienced gardeners will tell you there’s no better partner for creating a great garden than a well-stocked, well-run garden center or plant nursery. They’re the secret to any successful landscaping or gardening project.

Garden centers that are filled with a variety of plants, flowers, seeds and gardening supplies will be a frequent stop for any gardener, so choosing wisely is the key to success.

Garden centers are more than just plants. The best centers will be staffed by knowledgeable plant and landscaping experts who can advise you on the best type of plants for your garden. They can help you choose by understanding the specifics of what you’d like to achieve and how to help keep your garden healthy year-round. Pricing, of course, is also a major consideration.

Because you’ll likely want to develop a relationship with a garden center, choosing the right outlet will help you get the most out of your garden.

Here’s what you should look for when selecting a new garden

supply store.

DO THE RESEARCH

Research will help you determine which garden center is best for you.

Look at the center’s catalog or website. Not only should it be filled with quality products, it should have information to help you become more successful. Staff advice should be easy to understand and apply. Remember, they are not only retailers but experts in their field.

Quality garden centers offer

hands-on training and other classes on various gardening topics.

Your friends and neighbors may have referrals. Does someone in your social network love gardening? If so, then ask who they use.

While some garden centers stock a wide variety of brands and products, most have a few products they specialize in.

VISIT GARDEN CENTERS

Once you have researched garden centers, visit two or three locations.

Talk to a salesperson. Think of a problem you experienced in the past and ask them for a solution. The salespeople should be knowledgeable about remedies.

Find out how long they have been in business and more about the owner. Good centers are usually in the same place, operated by the same people for a very long time.

Look at the plants. Do they look healthy? Are they well-maintained? Is there a decent variety?

Typically, plants grown in greenhouses are better quality. After all, they are produced to be grown in your area. Plants grown locally usually have fewer diseases. A plant may not appear diseased until you take it home.

Inquire how the plants are

produced. “Open pollinated” designates a seed or plant will reproduce itself purely if a seed is properly saved from the fruit of the plant. An organic seed or plant has been produced without artificial or chemical pesticides.

Genetically modified plants are created by laboratory technology that manipulates the plant’s genes. For example, instead of mixing two different kinds of corn to create one that is more resistant to diseases, they may combine genes from corn and a totally unrelated tomato plant. These modifications do not happen naturally in the breeding process.

Many people are cautious about using genetically altered seeds and plants, but there are advantages to them. On commercial farms, this type of plant has plenty of assets over organic plants. In a backyard garden, however, genetically modified plants are usually not necessary.

When shopping at a garden center, understand the types of plants they offer. There should be a labeling system in place. If not, ask the staff for more information.

Once you’ve done your research and know what you want, head on over to your local garden center and get started improving your garden.

Choose an HVAC Company

Having a good rela tionship with an HVAC company can give you peace of mind when your heating or air conditioning systems go on the fritz.

The best HVAC contractors are helpful and reliable, but a poor contractor can cost you extra money and heartache.

Good word of mouth will go a long way toward helping you find the best professionals in your area.

Create a list of candidates and call the Better Business Bureau, your state’s board of contractors or the builders’ association to check on their reputations. Your town’s building inspection office may also have information for you. Avoid companies who have many com plaints on their record.

Upon narrowing the list, call the remaining ones and ask about pricing, guarantees and warran ties. Also inquire about how long it would take to complete a job and the manufacturers’ brands they use.

If you are purchasing new equipment, find out if you need a separate service contractor or if routine maintenance and repairs are included in the price of installation. Does the company provide around-the-clock emergency service?

High quality HVAC companies are fully licensed, bonded and insured. If a worker is injured or causes damage to your property, that insurance should cover it. Otherwise, you could be liable for the damages. Your insurance premiums would likely increase as a result.

Reputable HVAC companies will usually belong to recognized professional and trade

organizations. Some well-known organizations include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Membership in one of these organizations is not automatic. Applicants are required to have certain certifications, meet professional standards and meet or exceed other requirements before they are admitted.

Before any installation work begins, verify that all the required

building permits are in place. Most companies will file permits on your behalf at the local building codes office. But don’t assume that it has happened. Check with the permitting office first. Work done without proper permits could result in a fine and time delay.

Have a load calculation done before installing a new system in any building. The best companies perform a thorough calculation rather than estimate. Buildings change over time due to foundations cracking or settling. It will affect the efficiency of any

equipment.

The HVAC company shouldn’t use the old unit to determine the proper size of a new one. If your old unit was inadequate, you will want to install a unit that is a different size. Speak with your HVAC installer to determine the right size and model for you.

Ask your HVAC contractor to perform annual checkups to verify that the unit is running at peak efficiency.

With these tips, you can choose a reliable HVAC business that will support you for years to come.

Choose a Roofer

When it comes time to replace your roof, a great contractor will ensure that this expen sive task is done well with work that will last many years. This is not the time to hire a fly-by-night organiza tion just to save a few dollars in the short term.

Your first step in finding a reli able roofer is to ask your family, friends and neighbors whether they have recommendations.

You can also look on the internet for roofing contractors in your area. Some websites offer lists of professionals, along with reviews of their work.

Be sure to focus on the quality of work as well as the cleanup process. You don’t want scraps of shingles and nails left over after the contractors have gone home. Don’t hire professionals who leave debris on your property when the work is done.

Pick someone with a long track record in your community. Some contractors travel the country looking for work. They appear after a community experiences a natural disaster or heavy storm.

These contractors are making money from the insurance claims.

If you hire one of them, they cannot provide realistic guarantees for their work. They may be on the other side of the country if your roof starts to leak again.

Becoming acquainted with local contractors is especially important if you live in an area prone to high winds or hurricanes. It is good to

know who to call if your house needs repair work.

Once you have contact information for several roofing contractors, call them. Inquire about the company’s background and how long they have been in business. Generally, a good roofer should offer a guarantee between five to 12 years.

If the company has been in business for less than five years, it will

be difficult to determine the quality of their work.

Continue to ask questions about time frames and estimates. Get a written estimate before proceeding with any work. Communicating with the contractor will let them know that you will be taking a hands-on approach to this project.

Find out whether the roofers recommend standard or architectural shingles, what they will do if they find damaged decking, and when they might be available to start. Ask about the warranty and request to have it in writing.

Every professional who works on your property should be licensed and bonded. Insurance is particularly important for roofing contractors. They need to be able to cover any damages they might cause to your property. It is also essential that workers are covered under their insurance as well, in the event someone is injured during the job.

Before work commences, you must receive a written contract from the roofer. Read it over carefully. It will state the type of materials to be used, what the work will entail and the final cost.

Following these tips will help you find the best roofing contractor in your community.

Look for When Buying Windows

No matter what their size or design, windows are a key feature to a room. They add beauty, allow natural light to enter and provide emergency safety exits and the ability to let fresh air into the room.

Windows also affect your energy bills. Manufacturers are constantly developing ways to create more energy-efficient options for windows. Many technologies can help keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, reducing your utility bills.

If you’re ready to invest in new windows, here are a few factors worth researching before you start installing your openings to the world.

GLAZING

The actual glass in a window is called glazing. Many homes and older buildings have a single pane of glass within each frame. It is a traditional style; however, it is not energy-efficient.

Double-glazed windows are the popular option. There are two panes of glass in a frame. The gap between the panes acts as a layer of

insulation. It improves the window’s ability to maintain the building’s temperature.

Sometimes, newer structures have triple-glazed windows. They are more expensive, but they also provide additional insulation benefits.

R-VALUES

R-values measure the amount of heat a window loses through its glass panes. Higher R-values mean more energy efficiency. An R-value of three is very desirable.

U-VALUES

U-values reveal the level at which a window conducts heat. The lower the U-value, the better. People who live in wintery climates should choose replacement windows with strong R-value and U-value ratings to conserve energy.

LOW-E

Low-emissive, or low-e windows, are the latest innovations in the energy-efficiency mark.

Low-e glass traps heat by placing a thin metallic coating on the appropriate window pane. Indoor radiant heat is reflected back inside, cutting the burden on a building’s heating system. If you

live in a cold climate, install a low-e window as a complement to low U-value components.

People who live in sunnier, warmer climates can also take advantage of low-e windows. The summer’s higher levels of infrared rays are reflected back outside, keeping the interior cooler.

UV FACTORS

Blocking UV rays will spare your carpets and furniture from sun damage. That’s why a window with high ultra-violet blockage is recommended, especially for people who live in warm climates.

CASEMENT WINDOWS

When energy efficiency is a key concern, casement windows are the best choice. This simple highand-crank design lowers air seepage. When the wind pushes against the glass, the seal becomes tight and reduces leakage.

Casement windows are hinged on the sides. When the windows have top hinges, they are called awning windows. Hoppers are bottom-hinged windows.

Hinged windows must be maintained, as the seal erodes over time. When left unchecked, the erosion can make the window less energy efficient.

OTHER FACTORS

Large differences between interior and exterior temperatures create meddlesome condensation on glass. Always choose a window appropriate for your climate.

Window placement is another factor when building a new structure. Consider the building’s position and location as they relate to the sun. Windows facing the south let in more heat than north-facing windows. Properly placed, a window can increase a structure’s passive solar efficiency.

Extreme temperatures cause frames and seals to deteriorate more quickly. Windows using warm-air technology and adequate spacers reduce temperature fluctuations, placing less strain on seals and framing.

Before beginning any improvement project to your home or business, research the building codes in your area. You may need a permit to do a major window-replacement project. If you don’t have the required paperwork in order, you might have to pay a fine and remove the work that’s already been done and start over.

Knowing basic terminology and concepts before you shop for windows will save you time and money in the long run.

Choose a Furniture Store

When it comes to choosing furni ture, nothing beats knowing exactly what it is like to use it – whether sitting, lying or even just touching it. That’s why visiting a furniture store in person offers greater chances at successful purchases.

There is a wide variety of styles and options, options that are well worth testing before purchasing. Even if you’re perused furniture online, seeing it up close in an arranged setting can change your opinions on what you like. So it makes sense to bypass the internet and shop around.

Because you won’t always find furniture that suits your tastes or style, or works for your budget, the process can be challenging. But it can also be fun.

Here are some things to look for in a quality furniture store.

QUALITY THAT LASTS

Look for a store that sells quality, long-lasting furniture.

While inexpensive accessories can be bought cheaply and changed often, big furniture investments – sofas, dining tables, and the like – need to be purchased for the long term.

That means putting solid construction before a pretty style.

Solid construction isn’t always apparent at first glance. It should feel solid, not flimsy, of course. Beyond that, find out as much information as possible about the frame, materials and what kind of warranty it comes with.

A well-trained staff can inform you about their furniture, how they’re built and why the

construction matters. The best stores have employees who act as guides and teachers, not pushy salespeople.

VALUE, NOT JUST PRICE

It is best to pay more for a quality piece than to try to save money on something that will not last in the long term. The bigger the investment, the more important the design and quality become.

Concentrate on finding the best value. An inexpensive sofa will not be a good value if it is built with cheap and weak materials. Likewise, the most expensive love seat will not be a wise investment if the frame isn’t built solidly.

It’s best to look for brands with a

long track record and good reputation.

SERVICE AND DELIVERY

Every store has a different customer service policy. Choose one that is well known for being loyal to its customers.

Inquire about return policies. Some furniture stores will allow you to exchange an item within a certain time limit if it doesn’t meet your expectations. Learn what fees are involved if you have to return an item – if that is allowed at all.

Also, ask about the store’s delivery policy, including how much it costs, how far they’ll deliver and how quickly your furniture will arrive.

If you are comparison shopping, factor in the delivery cost when considering different stores. A lowpriced couch will not save you money if it comes with an expensive delivery fee. It may be worth it to pay a little more for the couch if free or reduced cost delivery is available.

The bottom line is that there are only two things that matter: the quality of the furniture you are purchasing, and the level of service you receive. Once you discover them both, furniture shopping can be a fun experience that that will beautify your home for many years. And you can be happy and comfortable with the furniture for generations to come.

Choose the Right Landscaper

Landscaping is part of what makes your home beautiful and more enjoyable to live in. Whether you are building a home or you are wanting to redo the landscape already on your property, a professional landscaper brings specialized knowledge and access to some of the best plants and hardscaping.

Given how difficult it is to achieve an attractive lawn and landscape, enlisting the aid of a professional landscaper can make the project and upkeep much more practical.

Consider the following tips if you’re looking to hire a landscaper.

TYPES OF LANDSCAPES

Different landscape styles require landscapers to have different skill sets.

Determine which landscape appeals to you before you begin your search for a quality professional.

A formal garden uses many geometrical shapes in its design. Plants provide a focal point, making the yard appear balanced.

To achieve this design, a landscaper will need to carefully prune hedges.

An informal landscape looks like organized chaos. Plants appear to be placed randomly. Landscapers who use this design should be skilled at working with planters and urns.

The English garden landscape uses the house as its focal point. All aspects of the yard flow together. Professionals who use this design should be skilled at working with climbing vines, critical to this style.

Oriental designs use rocks, mosses and evergreens. Calm, quiet minimalism tend to be the effect of this style.

To create a woodland design, the landscaper must have great knowledge of native plants and making them look their best.

More than ever, people are looking for landscaping that is friendly to the environment. This requires the landscaper to have knowledge of native plants, ways to plant to reduce water use and the minimal use of lawns that require frequent cutting.

SET YOUR BUDGET

Set a reasonable budget and stick to it.

Calculate what you can afford

and are willing to spend annually on your landscaping. It will help you prioritize your list so you can at least get your necessities.

You might need to make sacrifices. If you need a new landscaping wall, you might have to delay getting a sprinkler system. On the other hand, if irrigation is a must, then you might need to cut back on how often your lawn is mowed each month.

Even if your budget is tight, don’t get discouraged. Some landscapers may charge less to get your business or have creative ideas on how you can accomplish the look you want for less.

PRIORITIZE YOUR NEEDS

Determining what you need will help you decide which services you require from a landscaping company. Most professionals offer the following: weekly or monthly lawn and garden maintenance, weed control, tree pruning and shaping, garden installations, inspection and maintenance of irrigation systems and possibly even the construction of retaining walls or other structures.

GET REFERRALS

Neighbors are sometimes the best way to get referrals. If you like

GREAT SELECTIONS AT GREAT PRICES!

what you see in their yard, ask them for their landscaper’s name. Discuss the pros and cons of the service as well. You can even watch the company perform work. It will give you an idea about their employees and work habits even before contacting them.

You could also do an online search for landscaping companies. Be sure to read reviews from prior customers. Keep in mind, though, not all bad reviews are necessarily true. Some past clients may harbor a grudge and could inflate the problem. Good reviews also need to be taken into consideration. Some companies have people post good reviews even if the person has never used their service.

Check the Better Business Bureau for more information. If any complaints have been lodged against the company, the BBB will inform you along with whether and how they were resolved.

CONSIDER AVAILABILITY

Availability is another factor when looking for a landscaper. One of the first questions to ask is how often the company will be available for maintenance. If you want to be home while the landscaper is working, make sure you can coordinate your schedule.

Find a Good Appliance Store

When it comes to buying appliances, local brick-and-mortar stores beat out online outlets almost every time. A reliable, local appliance store gives consumers the opportunity to experience and learn about these big-ticket purchases in person.

While many department stores and big-box outlets sell appliances, it’s worth your time and effort to shop around for the best deals. Price isn’t everything. Smart technology has breathed new life into appliances, so finding the right oven, refrigerator or dishwasher is no longer a matter of just cost and color.

Learning about appliances online is a great way to understand their features and match them to your needs. Almost every maker now includes a video to walk you through the various technologies and how they can benefit you. Checking with friends and family is also a great way to research.

Armed with this information, you’re ready to gather ads to find out which stores offer the appliance

you want at a competitive price. Exploring these innovations in home appliance technology in person can be an enjoyable and eye-opening experience.

We’ve put together some tips that can help you narrow your search and find exactly what you need. But first you’ll have to determine your budget and requirements – what you need, what you want and what you’re willing to pay for it.

Now, it’s time to go shopping.

RESEARCHING ONLINE

First, do an internet search for appliance stores in your area. Local stores are easier to work with and you will likely be able to get your appliance much quicker than if you had to go out of the area or order it. If your refrigerator has stopped working, this is especially important. Many appliance stores offer free delivery in the local area.

You can get a good idea of the services offered by various companies via business review sites. Don’t dismiss negative reviews, but keep in mind that customers who have good experiences are less likely to crow on the internet.

Consumer Reports and the Better Business Bureau are great resources for finding reputable

businesses. To qualify for listing on the Better Business Bureau site, the business must be reliable and honest.

Many stores also have review sections for customers to leave comments, reviews and ratings for the services and the products they sell, which can give you some insight into the business and their products.

ADVERTISEMENTS

For most of us, getting a good deal is probably a top concern when shopping for appliances. Check your local newspaper and your mailbox for circulars announcing the latest, greatest deals on appliances in your area.

Many stores will use price-matching to stay competitive. Not all stores have policies on price-matching, so ask first. If you can find a lower advertised price on the exact same product and model elsewhere, many stores will sell you the product for that price.

As always, conduct research on the appliance you need to make sure you are spending money wisely. Not all appliances are the same; just because one manufacturer was excellent two decades ago doesn’t mean the quality will be the same now.

STORE POLICIES

Review the store’s policies about warranties and repairs. If the appliance comes with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty, you might not need an additional warranty from the store.

Appliances have a yearly saleprice cycle. Washers and dryers usually go on sale during the winter. Refrigerators are often discounted in the spring, with stoves and ovens dropping in price during the fall. If you don’t need it right away, consider shopping seasonally for the best deal.

You could haggle for a price, especially at a local appliance store. Salespeople are typically prepared for this process. If you are too shy or afraid of haggling, ask the store for extras, such as an extended warranty or free delivery and set-up. It never hurts to ask. They just might give it to you.

Consider these questions when you’re looking for an appliance store: Do they have a delivery window, warranty options, repair services and range of products?

Answer these questions, and know that you’ll purchase appliances with confidence.

Choose a Gas Fireplace Insert

PROPANE OR NATURAL GAS

Wfireplaces are quickly replac ing traditional wood-burning ones in many homes.

Gas fireplace inserts are efficient, clean-burning and offer a variety of options and features to heat your home while creating the ambiance of a traditional fireplace.

Here are some things to con sider when shopping for a gas fire place insert.

ADVANTAGES

Gas fireplace inserts are designed to fit neatly inside your fireplace and add to your home’s decor. The look can be modern or traditional, letting you keep the stone or masonry fireplace that serves as the visual centerpiece of your living area.

They’re also efficient. While a wood-burning fireplace lets most of the heat escape through the flue, a gas insert is designed to keep more of the heat in your home. Some models are even equipped with an electric fan to help the warm air circulate better.

They’re also easy to use. Many

SIZE

The first thing to consider is the size of your fireplace.

Different inserts are designed to be installed with very specific size ranges, including minimum depth requirements and the proper location for vents. A professional installer can measure your fireplace to help you find the right insert for your home.

The fuel available in your home will also be an important part of the decision. Whether your home has propane or natural gas will affect the kind of burner you can

The location of gas supply lines can also be a factor, including playing a major role in the cost of installation. An existing gas line to the fireplace with the appropriate capacity will make the installation much faster and simpler compared with running a new line from the

are sealed from the room and are known for being very efficient, while natural-vent inserts allow for more realistic looking flames. Whether you’re looking more for utility or aesthetics may affect your decision on how to vent the fireplace.

INSTALLATION COST

Different fireplace inserts have different venting requirements, all of which will affect how they perform and how they need to be

A vent-free fireplace does not require any venting to the outside. It’s essentially self-contained and vents back into the room where it is installed, burning the air and releasing a tiny amount of smoke. Vent-free inserts are not allowed in all areas, though, and have downsides compared to vented models.

Vented fireplace inserts get oxygen and release smoke to an outside source. Direct-vent inserts

All these choices can add up to a wide range of costs for the installation of a gas fireplace insert. That ultimately may end up being a part of your decision, opting for a model that keeps time and complexity to a minimum. Or it may just be a number to know as you make the best decision to get your dream fireplace.

RETAILER

All these decisions can be made much easier if you find a good retailer.

The best stores will have knowledgeable, experienced staff who can help walk you through all the choices that make sense in your situation. They’ll also be able to help with the installation or direct you to a reputable service provider in your area who can install the product correctly.

Resilient comes in a full range of finishes which are embossed and printed with such precision that they look and feel like the real thing.

Choose a Property Management Company

As stock markets gyrate wildly, many people are looking to other forms of investment to protect and grow their money. Real estate has always been an attractive investment to those with the cash flow to do so. However, owning property comes with many responsibilities, respon sibilities that many owners prefer to hand over to a prop erty management company. Keeping renters happy by responding quickly to problems, maintaining landscaping and upkeep of amenities such as pools can only increase the value of property – and these are the things that property management companies do.

A good property management firm can provide a multitude of valuable services that can make your life as a property investor easier. That said, your property manager will make critical decisions on your behalf making it extremely important that you do your homework during the hiring process.

Here’s what you should look for in a property management company.

SERVICES

A property management company can assist with documenting the condition of your properties, coordinating lease agreements, managing clean-up

and preparation for renters, creating financial reports, making inspections and dealing with repairs and maintenance.

The best property management companies can even assist you in finding good tenants. Depending on your contract, the manager could advertise, accept applications and then select the tenant on their own. They could also collect the applications and let you choose the one who is best qualified for the lease.

A major advantage of working with a property management firm is that they usually work with high-quality contractors who can do repairs at attractive rates. Home repair professionals might work for discounted rates if they know they will be getting steady work from a company that manages multiple properties.

The services offered can also be tailored to fit your needs as a landlord. You can negotiate with the property management company

for specific services, depending on how hands-on you want to be with your investment.

PRICES

Management companies usually charge a percentage of the monthly rent as their fee.

This percentage can vary dramatically from location to location and even between different companies in the same city. These differences come from market conditions, state laws that make property management more or less complicated, or the level of services performed.

When researching management companies, be certain you know their background. You must also understand what work they will or won’t do for the monthly fee. Inquire about additional charges that may not be covered in their monthly rent percentage.

Get a copy of their contract and understand all the details. Consult an attorney if necessary.

EXPERIENCE

State laws and local regulations vary dramatically across the nation, so you’ll need to find a property manager with plenty of experience in your local market.

Eviction laws are just one example of where experience and knowledge matter most. The rules and procedures for eviction must be followed precisely. Hire a company that knows exactly what to do to evict a tenant in your locale. Ask what fees will be involved if you have to go through that legal process as a landlord. Evictions aren’t common, but it pays to have a property management company that has experience to handle any issue – no matter how complex or unpleasant – that might arise from leasing your property.

A skilled property management company will give you the best benefit of all: the ability to sleep peacefully every night.

Choose a Real Estate Agent

Finding a reliable, reputable real estate agent is essential when you are considering buying or selling a home. These professionals can guide you through complicated negotiations and contracts to secure you the best deal you can get. They’ll also be able to inform you of the precise steps you need to take just before buying or selling.

Great real estate agents are not hard to identify. Friends and family will recommend them, they’ll often be quoted or featured in the pages of your local newspaper, and their agencies often promote them in advertisements, noting their experience and success in the local market.

When you are buying or selling, you need an agent you can trust. So, do your homework and pick an agent you can have faith will get the job done right.

Here’s some guidance in helping you choose the best agent for your situation.

WHERE TO START LOOKING

Recommendations are one of the best ways to find a qualified real estate agent. Ask people in your social network for referrals.

Sometimes agents are good at helping clients purchase homes, but not as skilled at selling them. Keep that in mind when searching for the right professional.

You might also contact local brokers or search the National Association of Realtors directory online. Always work with credible, responsible agents.

COMFORT LEVEL

At the initial consultation with a prospective real estate professional, focus on your comfort level while interacting with them.

Do you get the feeling they are genuinely concerned about your needs? Or are they focused on their commission? Do they know the current housing market? Can they negotiate a contract?

It is important that you feel comfortable with the agent. You must trust that this person can behave ethically and help you secure a good deal.

Communication and planning

Your agent should be an effective communicator. If you are selling your home, your agent should develop an effective

marketing plan, explain it to you and respond to any questions or concerns you have.

The marketing plan will probably involve placing advertisements and conducting open houses to invite the public for home viewings.

If you are purchasing a home, the agent should listen to your guidelines and price ranges.

Above all, your real estate agent needs to provide updates on progress. Do not work with someone who does not return phone calls, texts or emails.

MORE RESOURCES

To get a better idea about the process of buying and selling a home, conduct some research on

your own. Real estate magazines contain good information and can be a great way to start your research.

There are a lot of good resources on the internet, such as www. Realtor.com, which is associated with NAR and which contains free, useful information.

You may find housing statistics, market forecasts and tips, but nothing beats the power of networking. You need to find people with similar interests who will help you in your endeavor.

Upon successfully buying or selling your home, keep your real estate agent’s contact information on hand. You may want to refer other people to them. You may also need their services again someday.

Choose a Sushi Restaurant

Sexperience. Sushi restaurants come in all styles, from casual bars to formal restaurants, most featuring a chef skilled in creating sushi that look as good as they taste.

might be a little intimidating. Often, newcomers make the mistake of choosing sushi to impress rather than to enjoy the experience. Many are also nervous about how to eat it.

Worry not. There’s no wrong way to eat sushi and any quality sushi restaurant will be more than happy to educate you on myriad varieties and sauces, as well as how best to eat it. So don’t let food snobbery deter you.

Good sushi is delicious, fresh and can be a remarkably healthy way to indulge in a nice dinner. The best sushi restaurants also take their service and food to an exceptional level.

Here are some things to look for when choosing a sushi restaurant.

REPUTATION

Like any good service business, the best sushi restaurants develop an outstanding reputation in their community over time.

Online reviews can help you know what to expect, but recommendations from friends, family and co-workers can be even more valuable. The best sushi restaurants will have a long track record of happy customers not just for regular meals, but hosting special occasions, too.

However, don’t be afraid to try a new sushi restaurant that hasn’t yet

had time to build a reputation. Be one of the first to check it out and trust your instincts.

QUALITY AND SELECTION

There is a huge difference between great sushi and mediocre sushi. Although you can’t always tell that from the price, you can instantly sense it from the flavor.

Good quality sushi is something you can both taste and see, and it’s something easy to differentiate after you’ve visited a few different sushi restaurants. The best ones use the freshest ingredients – especially their selection of fish – prepared with care and sophistication that is readily apparent.

The selection on the menu can also be a good sign.

A great sushi restaurant will have a wide selection not only of American favorites like the California roll, but also traditional Japanese choices. They may also have some inventive house specialty rolls that are unique to their establishment, a way of setting themselves apart from competitors by

the unique taste and style of their expert sushi chefs.

ATMOSPHERE

While it’s not directly related to the food, the atmosphere of a sushi restaurant is an important part of the overall experience. It’s something to consider when deciding where to spend your time, and it’s also something the very best restaurants pay close attention to when trying to create the best visit for their guests.

While style is a somewhat subjective thing, some aspects of a restaurant’s atmosphere are universal. You want to find a place that makes you feel comfortable, relaxed and special at the same time.

The smell is something to notice, too. Just like the seafood department at a good grocery store, the restaurant shouldn’t smell “fishy” when you walk in the door. A clean, well-kept location stocked with fresh ingredients will have a pleasing smell from the moment you step inside.

SERVICE

Finally, the service you get from everyone who works at the sushi restaurant should make you feel relaxed and pampered.

From a warm and welcoming greeting at the front door to an attentive server who gets your order right and attends to your needs quickly, the best restaurants hire and train service professionals who get the small details right.

One of those small details is the presentation of your food, something at which the best sushi restaurants excel. It’s a part of the experience and the appeal of eating sushi, seeing the colorful and creative ways an expert chef can arrange and garnish your meal.

If you find a sushi restaurant with all those factors – a great reputation, outstanding quality and selection of food, a warm and welcoming atmosphere and over-thetop good service – you’re fortunate to enjoy a great sushi experience.
