VALLEJO — Skippy is only 14 months old but already is making an impression on people. He took Best of Show in the Solano County Fair this weekend, and his feathers were very sleek and shiny for the day’s showing. He is a Sumatra chicken, which is a breed of chicken native to the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. Elizabeth Wilson held his sire in her arms, proudly showing him off. Wilson is part of the Vaca Valley Grange and lives in Dixon. It has been a very busy few months for the 17-year-old with the Dixon May Fair and the Solano County Fair showings. “I have chickens, a meat turkey, dairy goat and rabbits this year,” she said. Wilson has found being part of Vaca Valley Grange has helped her grow. “I was really shy,” she said, “but doing this I can talk to people without stuttering. It helped me find my confidence.” Wilson also has found a passion for animals and is looking forward to a farming career. “I studied to be a poultry judge for the fair,” she said. She can apply for the position when she turns 21.

FAIRFIELD — Councilwoman Pam Bertani encouraged the crowd Saturday on the Solano County Lawn to, “Give it up for yourselves,” for participating in the city of Fairfield’s first Juneteenth Celebration. Bertani played a lead role in making the event happen not only as a “Celebration of Freedom” but also to share the history of Blacks in America. She hopes that this event will become annual and give everyone a “chance to do better.” “Juneteenth is about unity and freedom,” Bertani told those gathered, “but if we’re going to be honest, it is also about oppres-
sion. We’re still struggling in America with the oppression of people of color.” Juneteenth – originally June 19th, 1865 – is considered the date when the last enslaved people in America were freed in Texas. Although the rumors of freedom were widespread, the actual emancipation did not happen in Texas until June 19, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
