Cordelia hills fire burns 22 acres
FAIRFIELD — The Solano County Registrar of Voters has certified the results of the June 7 primary election. There were no changes in the results that have previously been reported. “The (Registrar of Voters) performed an audit which included a random hand count of 2.5% of the valid ballots, comparing the totals to the electronic results submitted to ensure accuracy. No discrepancies were discovered during the hand count audit of the results,” a statement issued by the Elections Office said. That means Sheriff Tom Ferrara and District Attorney Krishna Abrams have officially won their re-election bids. It also means Suisun City Councilwoman Wanda Williams and Fairfield Councilman Chuck Timm will, officially, determine in a Nov. 8 runoff vote who will represent District 3 on the Solano County Board of Supervisors. FAIRFIELD — One firefighter was injured, but no homes were damaged in a three-alarm vegetation fire ignited late Tuesday morning along Cordelia Road west of Pittman Road, the Solano County Office of Emergency Services reported. Personnel from every fire agency in the county, plus the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, responded to the fire that burned 22 acres and forced residents in 11 homes to flee the area. According to the 2020 census, there are 140 people living in the evacuation area. It was not clear how many were at home when the
mandatory order to leave was given at 12:05 p.m. No property losses of any kind were reported, the OES said. The fire started at 11 a.m. along Cordelia Road west of Pittman Road. An investigator from the Vacaville Fire Protection District, working through the county’s Fire Investigation Unit, was working to determine the cause of the fire. As of 3:15 p.m., fire crews were mopping up in the area, but the fire had yet to be declared controlled due to strong winds and the threat of the hot spots flaring up again, Don Ryan, the OES manager, said in a phone interview. Dave Carpenter, chief of the Cordelia Fire Protection Dis-
trict, could not be reached for comment. His department was the lead agency. An evacuation warning was issued at 11:45 a.m. for Cordelia Road, from Link Road to Thomasson Lane, as well as for Thomasson and Romania Road, the OES reported. The mandatory evacuation order was issued 20 minutes later, and was lifted at 1:35 p.m. However, some roads remained closed due to emergency equipment in the area. Residents were finally cleared to return to their homes by 2:10, but the roads at that time were open only to the people living in the area and emergency personnel. That public closure was lifted by 3:15.
Groundbreaking held for extensive Lookout Slough wetland project Todd R. Hansen

FAIRFIELD — A groundbreaking ceremony for the extensive Lookout Slough Tidal Habitat Restoration and Flood Management Project was recently held, nearly a year after the project was stalled due to public access concerns. The Lookout Slough Project is a $118.86 million, 3,000-acre habitat restoration and flood management project in the Cache Slough Complex in Solano County. The Department of Water Resources and Ecosystem Investment Partners are heading the project. State, federal, local and other interested parties gathered last week on the levee portion of Liberty Island Road to launch the actual work, which includes breaching the road in nine locations. “The Delta is a place. The Delta is a people. The

Solano County Supervisor Mitch Mashburn speaks Friday at the groundbreaking ceremony for the $118.86 million, 3,000-acre Lookout Slough Tidal Habitat Restoration and Flood Management Project located west of the Liberty Island Ecological Reserve in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Delta is a history. The Delta is a future,” Solano County Supervisor Mitch Mashburn said during the ceremony.
“We are here today to begin a project that will change all of those things. It will change this landscape through our work
and the work of Mother Nature into something beautiful, and that my friend is truly powerful,” Mashburn added. “But with great power comes great responsibility and it lies upon all of our shoulders to make sure that this and any future projects in this Delta walk that narrow path of change and do not deviate, or that same power that creates can destroy all that is the Delta.” The project is located west of the Liberty Island Ecological Reserve in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. A new, 25-foot setback levee will be built, and about 20 miles of open tidal channels will be created. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2024, the state noted in a statement. “Drought and climate change have elevated the importance of these types of multibenefit projects,” DWR See Slough, Page A8

Highland Park suspect charged with murder Tribune Content Agency CHICAGO — Prosecutors on Tuesday filed charges against the man suspected of firing upon crowds gathered for a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park on Monday morning, killing at least seven people and injuring more than 30. Robert “Bobby” E. Crimo III, 21, is charged with seven counts first-degree murder in what Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart called a “premeditated and calculated attack.” He was apprehended late Monday afternoon after an hourslong manhunt involving more than 100 law enforcement agencies. Rinehart said he anticipates dozens more charges. Details about the attack and the background of the alleged shooter emerged throughout the day Tuesday, as the Highland Park community began grieving the losses. Crimo planned the attack for weeks, police and prosecutors allege, then climbed a fire escape ladder to the roof of a building and fired as the Independence Day parade was in full swing. He dressed as a woman in order to evade detection, according to Chris Covelli, a spokesman with the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force. After firing dozens of shots, Crimo exited the See Murder, Page A8
