Solano County in line to be among 1st to have Bay Area wayfinding capacity Daily Republic Staff

FAIRFIELD — Solano County will be among the first counties to be part of a united mapping and wayfinding system in the Bay Area. The Operations Committee of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission on Friday approved a $6 million contract with Applied Wayfinding Inc. “to develop a single mapping and wayfinding system for use by all Bay Area transit agencies.” “This is a great step forward in making transit more accessible and understandable for regular and new riders alike. As more people come back to public transit after the pandemic, a unified system of maps and signage will make it easier for Bay Area residents to feel comfortable riding transit wherever they find themselves in the nine counties,” Napa County Supervisor Alfredo Pedroza, who is the chairman of the MTC board, said in the agency statement. Work on the new wayfinding system is scheduled to begin in 2024 and continue into 2025 at transit locations in Sonoma County before expanding into Solano County and then the rest of the Bay Area in 2026 and beyond, MTC announced. “The goal of the project is to design and deploy a fully harmonized suite of maps, signs See Solano, Page A11

FAIRFIELD — Several local organizations joined together this weekend to help take guns off the streets. Faith Partners and Community (Faith PAC), The Matt Garcia Foundation in partnership with the City of Fairfield and Solano County District Attorney’s Office hosted a no-questions-asked gun buyback event Saturday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church. “We want people to know that

church is not just about Sundays,” said Pastor David Isom of St. Stephen CME Church, Fairfield. The gun buyback is a way to get guns off the streets, according to Isom. Faith PAC is an organization made up of various churches from Solano County that help bring religion and civil services to the forefront through helping with various community events. “This destroys weapons of mass destruction and saves lives in the process,” said Claybon Lea, Jr. Senior Pastor at Mount Calvary

Baptist Church. The goal of the event was outreach, education, and getting unwanted guns off the streets, according to the new Fairfield Police Department public information officer, Jennifer Brantley. “This will help decrease accidents and domestic violence,” Brantely said. For the days event they took back 97 weapons ranging from handguns to AK-47s. “Last year we recovered 480 See Guns, Page A11

Fairfield-Suisun summer programs end with students mastering new skills Susan Hiland

SHILAND@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET

FAIRFIELD –— School was out in June, but for some students, their learning continued for a bit longer in summer programs. Unlike years ago when it was a drudgery to be stuck inside for another two weeks, the FairfieldSuisun Unified School District has designed summer school programs that include a lot more to do than catch up on math. Robert Matlock, 13, was virtual-learning for the last couple of years. His mom got an email from the school about the various programs, and she mentioned videography and visual arts programs

to him, and he was really interested in what they offered a Sheldon Elementary School in Fairfield. “I wanted out of the house. I am tired of staring at the screen all day,” Matlock said. “It strains my eyes.” He figured he spent eight hours a day online for school. “I thought at first doing school from home wouldn’t be that bad,” he said. But it has proven not to be that good, either. He missed people and interacting with them. That is why the summer videography and visual arts program was so good. He met new students from other schools

and made new friends. Eric Green, also 13, was nervous about taking the class. “I thought it would be more fancy,” he said. “More green screens and lighting.” The classroom was not
