Oak Fire tops 18,000 acres, destroys 41 structures Tribune Content Agency LOS ANGELES — As the sun rose over the Sierra Nevada foothills, it appeared burnt orange through hazy skies in Mariposa County. Since Friday, the Oak Fire has consumed more than 18,000 acres of the sparsely populated mountain community. And by Tuesday morning, the blaze, located near Yosemite National Park, had destroyed 41 structures and forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes. But California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection officials are hoping that an end is in sight. Crews were still putting out hot spots and providing structure defense Tuesday. The northeast side of the fire is brushing against steep terrain and has a risk of bumping around the bottom side of the 2018 Ferguson fire burn scar, which could then ignite new brush and forest, making the fire harder to control, according to Escondido Fire Department public information officer Dominic Polito, who’s working with Cal Fire on the blaze. “Today’s gonna be a big determinant,” Polito said. “If it runs up and around that Ferguson See Fire, Page A8

FAIRFIELD — No one is saying that the proposed sales tax increase for wildfire prevention and protection will solve all of Solano County’s needs and wants – especially its wants. Supervisor Jim Spering said that the “status quo is not the solution. We must embrace solutions; we must seek solutions.” He said the ballot measure allows the voters to say whether this is an important issue for them. The majority of the Board

Justice Dept. investigating Trump’s actions in Jan. 6 probe

The Justice Department is investigating President Donald Trump’s actions as part of its criminal probe of efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, according to four people familiar with the matter. Prosecutors who are questioning witnesses before a grand jury – including two top aides to Vice President Mike Pence – have asked in recent days about conversations with Trump, his lawyers, and others in his inner circle who sought to substitute Trump allies for certified electors from some states Joe Biden won, according to two people familiar with the matter. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. The prosecutors have asked hours of detailed questions about meetings Trump led in December See Probe, Page A8

of Supervisors agreed. On a 4-1 vote, with Supervisor Erin Hannigan dissenting, the supervisors on Tuesday introduced the ordinance to place the one-eighth cent general sales tax increase on the ballot. The final vote on the ordinance will take place Aug. 2, which is also when the ballot statement will come to the board.

Hannigan said it is not an issue of whether the voters think the issue is important or not. She contends the county has failed to show city residents why they should support the measure, and again argued the county is not thinking big enough to do what is needed to deal with the threat of wildfires. Hannigan suggested the city fire departments must be included in any countywide reorganization of fire services, that way resources can be called upon for a wildfire,

FAIRFIELD — The Solano County supervisors on Tuesday endorsed the idea of a countywide fire safe council. Organizers of the two community councils – the Green Valley and Pleasants Valley councils – were glad to hear the board get behind the idea, but also wanted to make sure that government will not be in charge. Rochelle Sherlock, the president of the Green Valley Fire Safe Council, and David Stevens, who founded the Pleasants Valley Fire Safe

Council, each told the board that it was important to keep the energy and focus of the grassroots efforts in a countywide council as well. The kickoff event about forming the organization is planned for 6 p.m. Wednesday in Conference Room A of the county Events Center, 601 Texas St., in Fairfield. A formal vote on forming a countywide council will come back to the board. Green Valley was the first Fire Safe Council in the county, while Pleasants Valley formed within the past year. Both took on the
