It seems that Frank Munoz ignored this ruling when he and an old flame of two years back, namely Lorraine Sheldon, got together Saturday after noon, Saturday night and all day Sunday. She certainly received a demonstrative welcome back! Back roads permit free parking, so why waste the price of tickets to a show and then distract the attention of every one else by putting on a better show than that on theWellscreen?Ada, we have finally caught up with you. You seemed to be having a lot of fun the other night with Henry Theissen. And you are seen with him quite frequently. My, is this a budding romance? Well, well, Barbara! Still two-timing! Don’t you think it’s about time you got your heart affairs settled between Perry and Bud? Saturday you were seen with Perry and Sunday night you were with Bud at the show! Honestly now, do you consider this fair play? But then we saw Bud engrossed in a delight ful tete-a-tete with Doris Headlee. It looks like Bud also has double trouble!

Dear Annie: Recently, I got sick. My daughter texted my husband saying I don’t let others take care of me and that I want to be the caregiver. She said, “She doesn’t get taken care of very well. She always wants to take care of others.” My husband took that as a slam that he doesn’t take care of me. He exploded at her and said some not nice things. Anyway, they are mad at each other. My daughter is talking to me, but my husband has been giving me the silent treat ment as he feels I should have taken his side. I knew exactly what she meant, but he is just reading too much into it. He won’t even let me make him food. He says, “You take care of yourself. I will take care of myself.” I hate the silent treat ment and that they won’t try to talk this out. Now I’m stuck in the middle. Help! — Hate the Middle Seat
Dear Annie: My daughter and her husband have two darling toddler girls who I adore. Their parents had no plans for child care when the first was born and just assumed I would step up. Now the girls are in daycare because caring for them full time was too much for me. I still watch them when daycare is occasion ally canceled or the parents go out and often just spend time with them for fun. Daycare works out well, except when the kids are sick and can’t go. When this happens, they sometimes ask me to watch the children. My daughter is paid hourly and has little sick time. Her husband sometimes travels or has important meetings. They live modestly but do have dispos ableAnnie, income.Iam 68 and have elderly family and friends I see frequently, as well as other grandchildren. While I sym pathize with my daughter and son-in-law, I don’t feel right about potentially carrying germs around after caring for sick kids. I have explained this to the parents several times, but they are starting to talk about the cost of missing work and hint that I am not very helpful or supportive. I feel so guilty! Is there a better way for me to explain this to them or, alternatively, stop feeling so terrible about it? I love them all so much and do want to be reasonable. — Sad Nana in Idaho Dear Sad Nana: To answer your question, no, there is not a better way to explain this. But that doesn’t mean you should be feeling terrible. The Covid pandemic has put a lot of things into perspective – includ ing how irresponsible it is to expose yourself to viruses and then engage with the rest of the world, especially vulnerable populations like senior citizens or young children. Still, sick children do need to be cared for, but luckily, there are other options. Some hospitals have programs that provide care for sick kids with working parents. Or perhaps they can find a local babysitter who is more comfortable inter acting with a sick child. If all else fails, your son-in-law may have to miss one of his “impor tant meetings.”

THE NEGATIVE CAN BE POSITIVE John Keats claimed that Samuel Taylor Coleridge would “let go by a fine isolated verisimilitude caught from the Penetralium of mystery, from being incapable of remaining content with half-knowledge.”Wow–butyou get the gist. Look at today’s deal. Against South’s four-spade contract, West leads the club king. He continues with the queen, but East overtakes with the ace and shifts to the heart three. Should South play the jack or theSouthking?opened four spades because he couldn’t envisage a slam opposite a passed partner and wished to keep the opponentsDeclarerquiet.hadthree top losers: two clubs and one heart. If the diamond finesse was losing, he was going down. So he assumed that it was working. Given that (a fine isolated verisimilitude?), South would make his game as long as he didn’t lose two heart tricks. He knew of eight points in the West hand: the club king-queen and the presupposed diamond king. If West had the heart ace as well, probably he would have opened the bidding. So declarer should play for East to have the heart ace. Put up the king. If it loses, South will finish down two (because the diamond finesse will fail). However, if the king wins, he will probably be home. (If East had the heart ace and diamond king, he wouldn’t have overtaken at trick two. He would have willed his partner to shift to a diamond.)Byassuming where one key card lies, you may be able to conclude which opponent holds another key card. Perhaps – perhaps – the Penetralium of mystery isn’t so mysterious afterCOPYRIGHT:all.

Dear Middle Seat: Texting is a surefire way for wires to get crossed. Your daughter’s intended message is clear: The best caregivers often make the worst patients. However, her phrasing coupled with a lack of in-person delivery says some thingYourdifferent.wayout of the middle is to play mediator. Get your daughter and husband in one room together and help them talk it through. This miscom munication is far too minor and juvenile for anyone to be giving or getting the silent treatment. I’d also be willing to bet this tiff has done nothing to help your recovery, which is what should be the top priority here. Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@ creators.com.

Publicizing details about U.S. weapons could provide an intelligence road map to adversar ies seeking to build ways of countering those systems. One former Justice Department official, who in the past oversaw investigations of leaks of classified information, said the type of top-secret information described by the people familiar with the probe would proba bly cause authorities to try to move as quickly as possible to recover sen sitive documents that could cause grave harm to U.S. security. “If that is true, it would suggest that mate rial residing unlawfully at Mar-a-Lago may have been classified at the highest classifica tion level,” said David Laufman, the former chief of the Justice Department’s counterin telligence section, which investigates leaks of clas sified information. “If the FBI and the Depart ment of Justice believed there were top secret materials still at Mara-Lago, that would lend itself to greater ‘hair-onfire’ motivation to recover that material as quickly as possible.”

The city also has several “legacy” EV charger system sites that were installed in the early 2000s. These sites con tinue to be operated and maintained by the city. Councilman Michael Silva liked the idea of putting the stations closer to “more foot traffic” that will “help the economy.” The estimated cost for infrastructure and work is $1 million per new EV charger site, while upgrades to an existing city legacy charger site cost $500,000. Electric Vehicle Charging Solu tions will receive and manage grants and there is no local match required. The estimated comple tion time ranges from 18 to 30 months. Staff has reviewed the kilowatt charge rate of several local EV charger stations in Vacaville and throughout Solano County, McLean said, and found the rates range between 29 cents to 60 cents, depending on the time of use. The standard agree ment with Electric Vehicle Charging Solutions allows for the site-host to gen erate revenue at a rate of 5 cents per kilowatt hour used. Staff recommends forgoing that revenue generation and to direct the company to offset the charge rate by 5 cents, thereby reducing the kWh charge rate to 24 cents per kWh for Level 2 EV chargers and 44 cents for DCFC Level 3 fast char gers, McLean said. By Dieter KurtenBach BAY AREA NEWS GROUP SANTA CLARA — Let the games begin. No, I don’t mean the 49ers’ preseason, which kicks off the first of its three games on Friday at Levi’s Stadium. I’m talking about the game within those games. M att Miller MMILLER@DAILYREPUBLIC.NETFAIRFIELD—Armijo High School varsity football is prepping for the upcoming 2022 season with the motto, “Restore the Roar.” The Royals want to be competi tive and are working hard to do so. Armijo football teams haven’t been to the playoffs in 56 years and are currently riding 15 straight losing seasons. There’s no need to go searching for motivation. But Head Coach Don Mosley is optimistic. He can feel a change coming over the program. Armijo went 2-8 in 2021, 1-4 in the Mon ticello Empire League, but some of those games were strongly con tested and others that weren’t, there was no letdown in the lineup. The tide might be changing. It’s a very young team that if they can stay motivated and continue to work together, the future is bright.

About 7% of current major-leaguers are Black American, and that number drops to 4% in NCAA Division I baseball. “We’ve been kind of toiling in this area for the last six or seven years‚” Del Matthews, MLB’s vice president of base ball development, told the Tribune. “And we’re just now starting to see more consistent fruits of our labor, specifically with this year, and most kids that were drafted have had a chance to touch some of the MLB develop ment“Weprograms.really feel that we’ve played an impor tant role in providing them the platform and also the exposure and con tinuing to encourage and push them and inspire. Using his Instagram and Twitter accounts, Wyche esti mates he has helped more than 150 youth baseball players gain exposure. But Wyche doesn’t stop at baseball; he also is incorporating education. MBP plans to incorporate monthly online tutoring and SAT prep in 2023. “Our push now is just giving these kids the knowledge of understand ing what it really takes to go to these next levels,” he said. “We’re just scratch ing the surface. Get into the educational part. A big reason why a lot of minor ity kids aren’t (playing at the college level) is because baseball doesn’t give out full scholarships. We’re still on the surface of understanding how the educational part ties into the baseball part.” MBP travels the country hosting events and college tours at which scouts, coaches and other interested parties can see talent that may not have been on their radar pre viously and encouraging players to attend college. It has hosted showcases at Truist Park, where the Atlanta Braves play, giving kids an opportunity to experience a majorleague ballpark. The event, which Wyche said he tries to give an “HBCU homecoming feel,” has attracted about 900 kids. He is taking the show on the road and has events scheduled in Gas tonia, N.C., Detroit and Palm Beach, Fla. MBP’s reach extends to the Chicago area as well. Among Wyche’s growing Black baseball network is Earnest Horton, or “Coach E,” as he is known. A Chicago native, Horton attended University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff on a baseball scholarship. After earning his degree in physical education, he returned home and began teaching in Chicago Public Schools and was an assistant baseball coach at Morgan Park. “I saw there was still a need and that need is equi table training on and off the field,” Horton told the Tribune. “We hear this a lot (that) Black kids can’t afford baseball, but that’s such a blanket statement. We’ve got to really chisel down and say, ‘What can they not afford?’ We’ve got a lot of organizations that are playing baseball, believe it or not. I hear people saying nobody is playing, but I beg to differ. We’re playing it at a great rate, it’s just not being publicized.”SoHorton decided to help fill that need. During the early part of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 when everything was shut down, he started a baseball instructional program called Black Baseball Matters that pro vides free coaching and fundamentals training to youth all across Chicago. “A baseball lesson can be anywhere from $30 an hour to $150 an hour,” he said. “We don’t want kids and their families to feel they have to go broke to fit thatInfeel.”July, Black Base ball Matters hosted an event with Jackie Robin son West Little League. “We want to create a safe environment sur rounding Black baseball,” Horton said. “Most little leagues survive off volun teers that might not have ever played baseball. To really create a boom in Black baseball, we’ve got to give them the tools that they need instruction ally. We teach our kids we’re not making excuses or looking for a handout. We’re going to figure this thing out. You know, grassroots, blue collar – we are ThereChicago.”hasbeen much discussion over the years about Black American participation in the sport, and many organizations have made efforts to help grow the game. From the looks of this year’s draft and the move ment happening with local, grassroots organiza tions, there may be some momentum building. “I feel like as the years go on, we’ll definitely have those numbers grow because of events like Dream Series, Break through Series and Hank Aaron,” Johnson told WABE-FM in Atlanta last year. “You know, baseball is fun around here, and they definitely will love to play the game.”

In addition to the recommended Covid-19 vaccine, I also suggest an adequate sleep schedule, a healthy diet and lots of vitamin C. I encourage you to protect them with the fabric of good morals, ethics and parental guidance that will help navigate them around pitfalls and influences that will jeopardize their education. I encourage students to arm them selves with discipline, self-control and good judgment. Choose social groups wisely. T aiwan has been an insep arable part of China’s ter ritory for 1,800 years. In 1943, the leaders of China, the United States and Britain issued the Cairo Dec laration, which clearly states that all territories Japan stole from the Chinese, such as Taiwan, shall be restored to China. The Potsdam Declara tion of 1945 affirmed that the terms of the Cairo Declaration would be carried out. United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, passed in 1971, recognized that the repre sentatives of the government of the People’s Republic of China are the only lawful representatives of China to the United Nations. When China and the United States established diplomatic relations on Jan. 1, 1979, the United States recog nized in the joint communique with China that the government of the Peo ple’s Republic of China is the sole legal government of China. Four decades have passed since, and the United States has long been commit ted to not developing official relations withByTaiwan.orderof succession, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is the third-highest-ranking official in the U.S. government. Traveling in a mili tary aircraft, Pelosi paid a high-profile “official visit to Taiwan” last week, as her office described it in her arrival statement, and was given full-proto col treatment by Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party authorities, who make no secret of pursuing indepen dence in their party platform. Such a visit has openly broken America’s commitment not to develop official relations with Taiwan. These are extremely irresponsible, provocative and dangerous moves. The one-China principle is part of the postwar international order and has become a general international consensus. As a country that thinks of itself as a champion of the “rules-based interna tional order,” the United States should naturally abide by the one-China principle. In the past, the United States has violated and under mined the principle by adopting the Taiwan Relations Act and the “Six Assurances” to Taiwan. And it is doing so again now in a broader attempt to uni laterally change the status quo on Taiwan and alter the postwar interna tionalFiftyorder.years ago, Henry Kissinger, who was personally involved in the negotiations for the normalization of China-U.S. relations, witnessed how the Taiwan question was properly handled on the basis of the one-China principle. Recently, he noted, “The United States should not by subter fuge or by a gradual process develop something of a ‘two-China’ solution.” People on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are Chinese. China will show the utmost sincerity and make the utmost efforts to achieve peaceful reunifica tion, but China will not allow Taiwan to be divided from it in whatever form. The current Taiwan authori ties have rejected the facts and legal grounds that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one and the same China, in pursuit of independence with the help of the United States. Their tactics include trying to sever historical and cultural bonds with the mainland, erasing national identity and stoking confrontation. The United States, meanwhile, sees Taiwan as a means to contain China and has been hollowing out the one-China princi ple. In the past 18 months alone, the United States has made five rounds of arms sales to Taiwan. President Joe Biden has said many times that the United States will not change its one-China policy and does not support “Taiwan independence.” But for the “Taiwan independence” forces, Pelosi’s visit represents an exceptionally strong signal that “the U.S. is on Taiwan’s side.” This goes against the one-China principle, the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques and America’s own commitments. Moreover, the Pelosi visit will lead “Taiwan independence” forces further down a dangerous path, with peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait hanging in the balance. Just think: If an American state were to secede from the United States and declare independence, and then some other nation pro vided weapons and political support for that state, would the U.S. govern ment – or the American people – allow this to Thehappen?Taiwan question is about China’s sovereignty and unity – not democracy. But it is true that Pelo si’s visit has aroused the indignation of the 1.4 billion Chinese people. If the United States truly takes democ racy to heart, it should show respect for the call of the Chinese people, who constitute about one-fifth of the world population.Withboth Covid-19 and the Ukraine conflict growing into pro tracted crises, it is high time for China and the United States to strengthen cooperation and work with other countries to find solutions. Instead, some politicians choose to damage China’s core interests, either to seek the limelight or to cement their polit ical legacy. Their actions will only erode China-U.S. relations and subject our peoples and militaries to peril. Taiwan is one of the very few issues that might take China and the United States to conflict. Extra caution and a sense of responsibility are indis pensable when it comes to Taiwan. Qin Gang is the Chinese ambassador to the United States.

W hether a student is in middle school, high school or college, there’s often a touch of anxiety and relief this time of year for students and parents. In addition to paying for tuition, arranging for transpor tation, after-school activities as well as shopping for sup plies, there is quite a bit of preparation involved before the start of the fall semester. There is some critical information that every student should know before they step foot on a campus. Being a good student is some times not enough to avoid serious issues on campus. There is still an alarming unpleas ant increase in violence, assaults and fights on school campuses. Besides the common safety con cerns that may affect students, we also now have yet another concern of pos sibly being exposed to Covid-19 and most recently, monkeypox. Be sure to add hand sanitizer to the school supplies list. I’m also particularly concerned about the amount of students that get involved in preventable issues that lead to serious trouble. The best way to address problems is prevention. How do you avoid actions that could lead to suspension or expulsion? It is a good idea to read the parent student handbook with your student. All edu

cational institutions should have these available in phys ical or digital form. It should be on the mandatory family reading list before the start of the new school year. There may be some policy changes that you may not be aware of. One that often catches parents and students off guard is the cellphone policy. Each school has various ways of addressing students’ cellphone use on campus and in class. Depending on the district, students can be sus pended for cursing, repeated violation of the cellphone policy and getting into a confrontation on the way to or on the way home from school. There is even a blurb about the often-elusive dueAsprocess.ayouth service provider, I have learned that most of the students and parents felt that disciplinary action taken against their child was unjust due to the lack of due process. Quite frankly, students feel that their testi mony is not given valid consideration in the investigation of incidents involving them. The process is per ceived to be extremely one-sided. It’s their word against the school staff. I’ve also experienced this discrep ancy as a parent. Fortunately, I know when my kid is lying and I’m not a parent who is oblivious to my child’s behavior issues.

D own in the trenches of California’s seem ingly perpetual clashes over housing, warring factions are employing two decades-old state laws as weapons. One is the famous – or infamous – Cali fornia Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), signed by then-Gov. Ronald Reagan in 1970, that requires authorities to determine whether proposed developments have environ mental impacts that must be Themitigated.other, much less known, is the California Housing Accountability Act (HAA), signed by Rea gan’s successor, Jerry Brown, in 1982 to prevent local gov ernments from rejecting housing projects without good reason. Those who oppose specific developments, particularly high-density apartments for lowand moderate-income families, often invoke CEQA, claiming they have negative impacts on the environments of their communities, such as increased traffic. Construction unions also employ CEQA, threatening to use its provisions to delay or kill projects unless developers agree to use union labor. In response, housing advocates, including project developers, invoke the HAA, accusing opponents of violating its pro-housing provi sions, which have been strengthened in recent years, and filing lawsuits or complaining to the state housing agency. The housing conflicts have been par ticularly sharp in San Francisco, whose left-of-center Democratic politicians are often starkly divided by housing issues. Last year, their incessant squabbling manifested itself in a confrontation over a 27-story, 495-unit apartment building proposed for a former department store parking lot. After years of wrangling and modifica tions, the project at 469 Stevenson St. received CEQA clearance from the city’s planning commission, but San Francisco’s governing legislative body, the Board of Supervisors, voted 8-3 to overturn the commission action, agreeing with project opponents that it had potentially severe environmental impacts. The state Department of Housing and Community Development took an immedi ate interest, opening an investigation and sending a letter to the city, saying the board’s rejection of the project for “various vague con cerns” could put it in violation of the Housing Accountability Act. The board’s reversal was particularly galling to San Francisco’s state legislators, who have been particularly aggressive advo cates of pro-housing policies. “When San Francisco acts like this, it sends a very nega tive message to the rest of the region,” state Sen. Scott Wiener told the San Francisco Chronicle. “We have been pushing other cities to do their share, to be better, so when San Francisco does something like this, it puts the proverbial turd in the punch bowl.” The dustup over 469 Stevenson had another impact. Assemblyman Phil Ting, a San Fran cisco Democrat, introduced legislation that, if enacted, would make it more difficult for oppo nents of projects to use CEQA and easier for proponents to invoke HAA. The measure, Assembly Bill 2656, zipped through the Assembly on a strongly biparti san vote and is awaiting action in the Senate. It also enjoys support from dozens of pro-hous ing organizations, while environmental groups and construction unions are opposed because it would make CEQA a less potent tool. A Senate analysis of the bill frames its effect on the growing conflict between the two laws, saying it puts local governments between “a rock and a hard place” with “con flicting mandates to approve new housing under the HAA, but to simultaneously ade quately account for the environmental impacts of housing under CEQA.” That’s quite accurate, and it once again indicates it’s high time for Gov. Gavin Newsom and the Legislature to comprehen sively overhaul CEQA, whose original purpose of protecting natural resources has been dis torted beyond recognition. Former Gov. Jerry Brown once called CEQA reform “the Lord’s work,” but was never willing to undertake the heavy lifting it would require. The Senior Life Master decided to introduce a little theater history into his Inclass.1937 (he began), Ira Gershwin wrote a musical based on P.G. Wodehouse’s story “A Damsel in Distress.” Bridge Here’s how to work it:
When the pandemic turned early scenarios upside down, she ended up collaborating with screenwriters Madeline Walter and Paul Welsh on rewrites in 2020. “When Covid hit, we had to completely reimagine the movie all over again, in scope and size, and scale it way, way down,” she says. “So I did feel like even though I didn’t write it, I definitely had my hands all over Plansit.” to film Rita at Coachella, where all good influ encers go, went out the window, depriving viewers of seeing Keaton at large among the youthful throngs. “But now you get to see her on mushrooms, and you wouldn’t have gotten to see her on mushrooms had there not been Covid,” Aselton says of a new scene where Rita inves tigates ‘shrooms as a possible way to turn back into Mack. “You win some, you lose some.”
Diane at 30 Mack is 30 when she expe riences her existential crisis. For Keaton, who turned 30 in 1976, it was the age at which she filmed her Oscar-winning role as the title character in “Annie Hall.” “I would say I was anxious, a little anxious about life,” she says of her 30th year, which came after well-regarded roles in the first two films in “The Godfather” saga, but before “Annie Hall” sent her career skyrocketing. “Of course, I was very, you know, happy to have that opportunity to be in that role, which I really enjoyed. “But before that, you know, it was just trying to get moving and being,” Keaton says. “You know, I’d been in ‘Hair’ (the 1968 original Broadway pro duction) and all those things. “And finally, (‘Annie Hall’) happened, and that was so extraordinarily wonderful for me,” she says. “I loved it. That movie was great.” Aselton sees “Mack & Keaton on hats, finding her true self, not acting her age in ‘Mack & Rita’ See Keaton, Page B5 Courtesy of Gravitas Premiere/TNS Diane Keaton in “Mack & Rita.”
Tribune ConTenT AgenCy Diane Keaton starts to laugh when it’s suggested that one of the very stylish hats she wears in her new movie “Mack & Rita” looks an awful lot like one displayed in a video tour of her hat collection two years ago. “Oh, that’s terrible!” Keaton says, laughing harder, of the video she made for Insta gram while stuck at home in theSo,pandemic.hadshe given the film’s producers a headpiece from her collection?“Yes,of course, I’d loan them out,” she jokes. “Get a little cash. It didn’t hurt. “No, no, I didn’t.” It’s a perfect Keaton moment, funny and charm ing in equal measure, and the same can be said for “Mack & Rita,” in which Keaton gets to play Rita, the inner 70-year-old of 30-year-old influencer Mack, who comes to life in the movie magic seen in movies such as “Big” or “Freaky Friday.”
As Aunt Rita takes over Mack’s social media accounts, she stumbles onto even greater success as an influencer after an attempt to cover for Mack at the opening of a Pilates studio first goes off the rails, and then goes“That’sviral. the kind of thing that I love,” Keaton says of the phys ical comedy involved in what’s more or a less her losing battle with the Pilates machine. “Just being an idiot, falling over. “You know, I liked playing all of that,” she says. “I would like to have a movie where I get to do more of that. Just being a mess, falling into sandpits, and never know where you’re going, and being wrong. “I’d love that. Those little bits were fun for me. Really fun.”

The screenplay for “Mack & Rita” enchanted director Katie Aselton when she read it but she admits that wasn’t the top reason she signed onto the“Ifproject.I’m completely honest I would have to say the No. 1 draw was Diane Keaton, who was already attached to star and produce,” says Aselton, who as an actress has starred in both independent films, often with her husband Mark Duplass and brother-in-law Jay Duplass, and TV series such as “The League” and “Legion.” “That was beyond a dream come true,” she says. “And then beyond that, honestly, the story, the message, the heart of this movie really resonated with me. “As a woman on my own journey to self-love and selfacceptance it felt like a real honest look wrapped up in a big body-switching comedy, and I had never done anything like that before. It felt like a real swing that I was ready to take.” Aselton had written each of the feature films she’d directed before taking on “Rita & Mack.”

The Senior Life Master decided to introduce a little theater history into his Inclass.1937 (he began), Ira Gershwin wrote a musical based on P.G. Armijo From Page B1 always found the pre season to be more nuisance than a bless ing. Rams coach Sean McVay – a branch off Sha nahan’s coaching tree – sat his entire offense for all four preseason games in 2018. He’s maintained that position every year since, even as the NFL eliminated a preseason game from the schedule. To McVay, the risk of injury wasn’t worth the reward of seeing what he could reasonably ascer tain in practices and controlled scrimmages with other teams. The Niners can see the logic in that – last year Lance chipped the bone at the end of his right index finger in the Niners’ final preseason game. It was an injury that Lance said affected him all season. If the same thing were to happen this pre season, the Niners’ win total at sportsbooks in Las Vegas would be taken off the board – this season’s lofty hopes would likely be Theshattered.apple didn’t fall far from the tree with McVay and Shanahan. The Niners’ coach is yet to completely punt the preseason, but with so many head coaches in the league capable of tracing their coaching lineage to the two NFC West head honchos – and Shanahan and McVay’s success –the already watered-down exhibition schedule is likely to be more diluted than ever this season. Shanahan said that Lance might play Friday and in the team’s third preseason game at Houston. No guarantees were made on either game,That’sthough.the first game within the game. Do the players people pay to see even play? No matter which players are on the field – Lance included – it’s highly unlikely that Sha nahan would run anything but the most vanilla offense. For defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, expect a defense as bland as his press conferences.TheNiners’ offense will evolve with Lance at the help – his skillset demands it. We’ve seen hints of this new playbook during practices this past week. But why put the good stuff on tape for the rest of the league? That’s the second game within the game. Last year, Shanahan did put some good stuff in the Niners’ third pre season game. He put in a full-blown quarter back rotation with Jimmy Garoppolo and Lance. It proved foolhardy because of the Lance injury, but there was some benefit: he could laugh at the media Thanksfreakout. for that one, Kyle. The Lions – the 49ers’ Week 1 opponent – also freaked out at the quar terback rotation. The final preseason game has been treated as the dress rehearsal for decades. Here the Niners were busting out a big, bold newNo.offense?Shanahan admit ted after Week 1 that the quarterback rotation was all for show – a gaslight. He wanted the Lions to prepare for two quar terbacks. They did. And by the time they real ized Lance was only a bit player for the Niners, San Francisco had a fourtouchdown lead. I don’t think Shana han will show us anything in the preseason, but if he does, don’t take it at faceButvalue.then there’s the third game within the game, and this is the fun one for dorks like me. The Niners have been better than most through out Shanahan’s tenure at finding undrafted rookie free agents. The goal with many of these players is to have them on the team’s practice squad for possi ble in-season call-ups and year-over-year growth. But to get a player to the practice squad, they first need to be cut – anyone can pick them up and sign them to their active roster or practice squad. The issue here for the Niners is that the rest of the league knows that the 49ers are good at finding diamonds in the rough. And those are the players that would feature prominently in pre seasonTheregames.are a few players that fit that mold this season, but one stands out more than the rest: running back Jordan Mason. The Georgia Tech product looks like the real deal – he’s a smooth, upright runner with excel lent cut-and-go ability. The Niners have their four running backs for the 53-man roster set, barring injury: Elijah Mitchell, Jeff Wilson, Trey Sermon (who has been impres sive in camp), and rookie Tyrion Davis-Price, who was selected in the third round of the most recent draft.

sophomore quarterback Willie Nickson. Mosley said Nickson has been sharp in individual drills and looks good at making his“Heprogressions.canalsoget out of the pocket and run if he needs to get some good yardage,” Mosley said. The running back position has a stable of freshman Josiah Chavez, sophomore Markel Hazzard, sophomore Ryan Lee and junior Jalen“TheyWhite.all bring some thing different to the table,” Mosley said of the backs. “Ryan and Markel have been working all summer and showing skills in the passing game. Chavez is getting up to speed with us. He can get to the edge and also runs good between the tackles. Jalen brings us some experience.” Look for Nickson to seek out receivers junior Deonte White, junior Tre’veon Hen derson, senior Kaiba Washington, junior Evan Wortham and junior Jesse Reid as well. The tight end is Jordan Brown. Washing ton was a second-team all-MEL selection and Brown earned honorable mention recognition. “It’s a good group of receivers who we really tested during 7-on-7 this summer,” Mosley said. “Jordan is also a great blocker and a former lineman.
