A Solano County Supe rior Court jury this week found a Fairfield man guilty of seconddegree murder for the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist last fall. Nadhir M. Ghuzi, 31, also was convicted of felony hitand-run causing injury, the Solano County Dis trict Attorney’s Office said in a statement released Thursday, the day after the jury conviction.Thevictim was later identified as Darryl L. Mitchell, 52, of Vallejo. Fairfield police offi cers were dispatched at approximately 7 p.m. Oct. 19, 2021, to the inter section of North Texas and Wisconsin streets to respond to a fatal traffic collision, according to the District Attorney’s Office statement. City cameras showed a dark SUV-style vehicle had struck a bicy clist while traveling at a high rate of speed. Mitchell had life threatening injuries and died at the scene. The crash occurred on Ghuzi’s birthday. “The driver of the SUV fled the scene. Offi cers located a hubcap belonging to the SUV. Using the hubcap, city cameras and license plate readers, officers were able to identify the vehicle. Additional sur veillance footage from a nearby gas station identified the (Ghuzi) as the driver of the vehicle at the time of the collision,” according to the District Attorney’s Office statement.

At that time I was in third grade and Ken was in Oursixth.argument esca lated and we started calling each other names. Then, to my shock and amazement, boom! –Ken dropped the verbal atomic bomb, the effword. Now, at our house we weren’t even allowed to say “dag” because it sounded too much like a cousin to “damn.” So once Ken uttered that radioac tive expletive, I had one thought: checkmate. Once I reported his monumental infraction to our parents, our dad would remove several layers of skin from Ken’s butt that night using The Dreaded Belt™. However, Ken was an expert at pushing my buttons and in no time managed to get me to blurt out that he was an a**hole. Uncheckmate. We kept sniping at each other and using increas ingly profane insults, caution now thrown to the wind. It was only when we got to the front doors of the school that we actu ally started fighting. It was quickly broken up by faculty members and we were hustled into the vice principal’s office. He yelled at us and was aghast when he learned we were brothers. Fortu nately, since our fisticuffs

It has been cathartic for us to explore and share our evolving emotions around that tragic event and hopefully help others. Kelvin was a founder of Bay Area Survivors of Suicide and I was involved for a number of years with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Com munity Walks when they had them locally (the closest they now have is in San Francisco on Sept. 10). Four things con verged around this time that make me want to once more write about Ken today. For start ers, Aug. 31 would have been his 61st birth day, but he is forever 28. Second, September is National Suicide Preven tion Month. All month, mental health advocates, prevention organizations, survivors, allies and com munity members unite to promote suicide preven tion awareness. Third, National Suicide Preven tion Week, a time to share resources and stories as well as promote suicide prevention awareness, is Sept. 4-10. Finally, World Suicide Prevention Day, a time to remember those affected by suicide, to raise awareness, and to focus efforts on direct ing treatment to those who need it most, is Sept. 10. My brother Scott becoming a Grand pappy last month made me reflect on some of the many things that Ken has missed out on in our family, in the tragic,somefulthemhissinceinandcommunityintheworldthe32yearshetooklife.Someofaredelightthingsandofthemarebutallare a part of the mysti cal mosaic called life that I have come to believe is an exquisite journey to be experienced and savored.

This was Board 31. At the other table, Gawrys (South) did not stretch to open two no-trump, so he and Klukowski stopped safely in three no-trump. After a heart lead, North took 11 tricks, losing two clubs. At this table, di Franco (South) opened two no-trump, Manno (North) used Stayman and then jumped to four hearts to show slam interest with a five-card club suit. South tried to sign off, but North was not to be denied. After Brink (West) led the spade nine, promising one higher card but not the 10, what should declarer have done?Di Franco had only nine top tricks: four spades, two hearts and three diamonds. He could try to collect four spades, three hearts, four diamonds and one club, but that required a lot of fancy footwork. Much simpler was to hope that West had the club queen and at most three cards in the suit. So, declarer led his club jack at trick two. West won with the ace and played a second spade, East discarding the club two. On the next two spade tricks, Drijver (East) threw two diamonds. Note that he kept his five low hearts, trying to look like someone with the queen to protect. Now South led his second club to dummy’s nine, but East produced the queen for down one. That gave Zimmermann 11 IMPs.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). As members of the kick-line know, everyone working in the same timing, energy and move ment creates a powerful effect. A dancer who’s able to kick higher than the others will, in the name of conformity, save that for another dance.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Love sends you on a mission. Your heart carries a question and your mind finds a way to answer it. Take care of your self along the way because this journey takes work and you’ll be stretching and growing to get it done.

Your life is growing in an adventurous direction. You’ll wish widely and wildly, then narrow your options to one very meaningful purpose and work toward it for most of the year. Though you don’t focus on the financial aspect of a job, it flourishes anyway, a natural byproduct of changing people’s lives for the better. Libra and Aquarius adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 4, 1, 11, 38 and 8.

Dear Annie: Our son “Kyle” got a divorce after eight years of mar riage. (He later told us it was because his ex-wife had an abortion.) Since then, he has had a few girlfriends, but none of them wanted or could have a baby. He des perately wants to have a child, but he doesn’t have $50,000 for a surrogate. My question is, what do women want at childbearing age? Kyle is 38, of average height (5 feet, 10 inches) and a runner, so he’s in great shape. He has a good job, a master’s degree and a condo in a beautiful city. He’s tried dating sites with no luck. What else can he do? — Rocky Mountains Dear Rocky Mountains: Kyle sounds like a catch who just hasn’t found his perfect match yet. While he may have tried dating sites in the past, not all of them are created equal. A newer app, heybaby, is designed specifically for those who want or already have chil dren. eHarmony, an already popular dating site, is known for being a good fit for singles seeking serious relationships andAsidemarriage.from the digital dating scene, Kyle might also con sider getting involved in local goings-on, like speeddating events or singles mixers, targeted to those waysbuilding, eventsclasses, runninggeneralthingslookingintentionallyforthesameheis.Evenhishobbies, likeorfitnessorperhapsinhiscondomightbegoodtomeetwomen with shared interests and things in common. Does Kyle have any close couple friends with single friends of their own? Some times, the greatest matches are made by the people who know us best. I have no doubt that with more time and a continued openness to love and possibility, Kyle will find exactly what he’s looking for – and make some lady incredibly lucky. Dear Annie: The letter from “Super Spender,” who felt she was contributing more to the household spending than her husband, reminded me of how my late husband and I handled our finances. I want to explain what we did in hopes that it will help solve her problem. We kept our own bank accounts, but we also had a joint account that we each contrib uted to equally. Our mortgage, car payment(s) and utilities were split in half. Then we determined how much we spent on groceries and entertain ment and agreed on a monthly amount for those and each contributed half to the joint account. If we spent all of that in a month (sometimes we did; sometimes we didn’t), then it was up to us individually if we wanted to pay out of our own accounts for an extra outing or activity. The money in our own accounts was ours to spend as we saw fit. If we had a large expense – refinancing our mort gage, buying a new car or large appliance, doing home main tenance – we discussed it together, and our joint account contribution was adjusted accordingly.Weweretogether for 27 years, and we seldom had issues about finances that we saw other couples deal with. Hope this helps. — Happy Budgeter Dear Happy Budgeter: Thank you for this perspective. You were one of many readers who wrote in suggesting the couple start a joint account to cover shared expenses, and this indeed seems like a great solution. Tribune ConTenT AgenCy Sigourney Weav er’s still a working girl – and plans on keeping it that way. The “Alien” and “Working Girl” star, 72, shared in a new interview with Inter view Magazine that she intends to keep the grind going, age be damned.

“I’m fine that I might be the oldest person on the set,” con tinuedWhileWeaver.she often adjusts to “a period of “Oh my god, it’s happening again,” the three-time Oscar nom said that feeling doesn’t hold a candle to “the joy and the explosion of letting this person out to That, live.”said Weaver, is “the most exhilarating thing in the world.”

Weaver won’t retire from acting: ‘I enjoy it more now than ever’

A graduate of Yale School of Drama, where she was classmates with Meryl Streep, Weaver made her stage debut in 1973 and was first seen on the screen in 1970, with a role on the series “Somerset.” She made her big screen debut as one of the women dating Woody Allen’s Alvy in the “Annieromanticwriter-director’snow-controversialseminalcomedy,Hall”in1977.

About three-quarters of the state’s general fund revenues come from personal income taxes and the top tiers of taxpayers gener ate the vast majority of those taxes, largely from their gains in the stock market and other investments.Intheshorter run, however, economic expansion may be hindered by an increas ingly acute shortage of workers. The proliferation of help-wanted signs in Califor nia attests to the troubling fact that relatively few working-age adults are either employed or are available for work. The state’s “labor force participation rate” of 61% is two per centage points lower than it was a decade ago and one of the nation’s lowest. CalMatters is a public interest journalism venture committed to explaining how Califor nia’s state Capitol works and why it matters. For more columns by Dan Walters, go to calmatters.org/commentary.

California’s unemployment rate is also 1.2 percentage points higher than Florida’s, a state that Newsom delights in disparag ing, and only a tiny bit lower than the rate in Texas, another Newsom foil. So, one might wonder, where does Califor nia’s economy go from here? There are some indications of economic softening. For example, state income tax revenues are running somewhat below the 2022-23 budget’s expectations. Economists are divided over the direction of the national economy – whether it’s already in recession or on the cusp – in light of sharp increases in interest rates by the Federal Reserve system to counter runaway inflation. Upticks in interest have already cooled what had been a red hot housing market in California, reducing the pool of would-be buyers by increasing monthly mort gageWepayments.knowfrom past experience that when the nation’s economy catches a cold, it quickly turns to pneumonia in California and that a serious drop in the stock market due to rising interest rates would have a disproportionately negative impact on California’s budget.

Our election system designed to excuse officials from responding to constituents Be a VIP voter on Election Day

A poll by Morning Consult/Polit ico found that 68% of voters support stricter gun laws, up from 64% in a previous poll. When the biparti san Safer Communities Act of 2022, a firearm regulation and mental health bill, came up for a vote in June, all Democrats in the House voted yes along with 14 Republicans – none from Missouri. Blunt voted yes in the Senate. Hawley voted no. A functional government oper ates with a give-and-take structure between elected officials and the public. Citizens should know where their representatives stand on press ing issues, and lawmakers should understand the needs and desires of their constituents. Only then can voters determine whether their views are aligned with a candidate. At least in theory, that’s how it’s sup posed to work. The combination of gerryman dering, noncompetitive districts, hyper-polarization, dark money and the lack of accountability has created a stew of political dysfunction. Compet itive congressional districts have been steadily declining for decades and are only getting worse. The Cook Politi cal Report estimates that less than 8% of congressional districts will be com petitive come November. I suspect the lack of competitive districts leaves an overwhelming majority of Americans feeling their votes don’t matter, while parties and candidates feel they don’t need to work to earn anybody’s votes. Republicans living in St. Louis, where Biden won by 60 points, or Democrats living in Dunklin County, where Trump won in 2020 by 55 points, probably don’t think their votes will make a bit of difference. The truth is, unless it’s a statewide race or a ballot initiative, it doesn’t. Effective governing in America requires compromise. When more than 90% of congressional districts lean toward one of the two major parties, most representatives probably have little incentive to compromise.

Elected officials increasingly face strong pressures to be hyper-par tisan, which has made governing veryBackdifficult.in2018, Missourians passed the Clean Missouri Amendment with 62% of the vote. The amend ment required lawmakers to wait two years before they could turn around and lobby their colleagues. It aimed to eliminate almost all lobbyist gifts worth more than $5. It aimed to elimi nate partisan gerrymandering. It also aimed to tighten candidate-contri butionMissourianscaps. rolled back the Clean Missouri Amendment just two years later. The difference was 59,145 votes. Although Clean Missouri wasn’t perfect, it made progress in fixing what ails us. Thus far, the attempts to change the incentives and mend the system have failed. There should be no expectation that we will have a more responsive or functional lawmaking structure soon. Because when it comes down to it, we get what we vote for.

SOLANO

V ote-by-mail, ballots for the November Elec tion will be mailed to all active registered Solano County voters in early October. Pay close attention to infor mation included in the voter’s packet – especially your poll location. Your regular poll location may have been elim inated. Due to county budget constraints and the fact that 90% of voters return their vote-by-mail ballot either by mail or at one of the dropoff boxes throughout the county, poll locations have been reduced from an average of 100 locations to 70 locations countywide.Whyshould you care? Why not just mail or drop off your ballot envelope –almost everyone does it? Why should you bother to vote in person when you can just drop it off? It’s so convenient. Voting in person (no envelope) is the best way to ensure that your vote-by-mail ballot is promptly and accurately counted and the results reported on election night. In Solano County, it’s even easier and quicker than you may think. The “Official Ballot” you receive in the mail is exactly that, an official ballot. You can mark it at home, take it to your assigned poll location – (no envelope), check in with the e-roster clerk, sign the voter roster ticket and personally insert your marked vote-bymail ballot into the ballot scanner. Your vote is instantly and accurately recorded, and will be included in the election night tally when the polls close on Election Day. If instead, you choose to mail or drop off your ballot in an envelope, it embarks on a perilous journey before it is counted. Ballots and envelopes are often damaged during the trans port process. Sometimes they don’t arrive at all. Once at the Registrar of Voters Office, ballots and envelopes undergo “ballot processing” – a multiple-step, time- and labor-intensive process. This processing begins 29 days before Election Day and continues until the vote totals are certified, 30 days after ElectionEnvelopesDay. are sorted, scanned, prepared for signature verification; signatures are “verified” (a weak, sub jective, inexact process that is often so permissive as to be almost useless). Accepted ballots are then extracted from the envelopes and examined for damage – sometimes caused by extraction process. If deemed damaged, ballots are duplicated by two, largely unsupervised Registrar of Voters workers. Damaged ballots include those with any extraneous marks, creases, tape, spills or a voted sample ballot – this could be your ballot, and you will never know. Finally, the ballots are tabulated. It can be weeks after Election Day before your vote is (if it is) included in the vote Learntotals.more about our California elections and what citizens can and are doing to protect the integrity and transparency of the election process. State recessionlostregainsfinallyjobsinCovid

F or months, Gov. Gavin Newsom habitually crowed about Califor nia’s recovery from the recession that hit the state when he shut down much of its economy to battle Covid-19. By cherrypicking monthly employment statistics, Newsom claimed the state was leading the nation in job gains, even when Califor nia’s unemployment rate was near the highest of any state, topping out at 16.1% with more than 2.6 million Califor nians having lost their jobs. Finally, however, Newsom can legitimately hail an almost full employ ment recovery. In July, the state’s unemployment rate dropped to 3.9%, exactly the record-low number that California achieved in Febru ary 2020, just before he issued the first of his shutdown orders. Total employment in July was still a bit lower than it was 28 months earlier, 18.8 million vs. 18.6 million, but the labor force was also a little smaller, 19.5 million vs. 19.3 million, and virtually every private eco nomic sector saw full employment recovery. Government was the only major sector still lagging, about 100,000 workers fewer than it had“Californiabeen. is getting very close to fully recovering all the jobs it lost due to the pan demic,” said Taner Osman, research manager at Beacon Economics and the University of California, Riverside Center for Eco nomic Forecasting. “In fact, if we repeat this month’s job gains next month, we will reach that“Californiansmilestone.” are getting back to work with record low unemployment,” Newsom said when July’s data were released this month. “We have historic reserves and we’re putting money back in peoples’ pockets as we con tinue to lead the nation’s economic recovery.” If there’s any negative aspect to the latest data, it is that while 3.9% ties a record for low unemployment in California, it’s still the nation’s 38th highest, more than twice as high as No. 1 Minnesota’s 1.9%, and substantially higher than jobless rates in states Califor nians tend to see as economic backwaters, such as Mississippi and Alabama.

Opinion I f an employee was com pletely unresponsive to her or his employer, the employee would likely not have a job for very long. Unfortunately, this is not the case in politics. Americans’ approval rating of the job Congress is doing has fallen to 18%, yet in the 2020 general election, 93% of incumbents nationwide won their reelection bids. Our political system is so broken that elected officials are not motivated to be responsive or accountable.Withasingle question I wanted to ask Missouri’s congressional delega tion, I called or emailed the offices of Sens. Roy Blunt and Josh Hawley, Democratic Reps. Cori Bush and Emanuel Cleaver II, and Republicans Ann Wagner, Blaine Luetkemeyer, Vicki Hartzler, Sam Graves, Billy Long and Jason Smith. No one responded for comment. Zero. The failure to respond was sweeping and bipartisan.Thedisappointing reality is that none of them had any incentive to reply to me. Let’s take abortion. A St. Louis Uni versity/YouGov poll conducted in August showed wide majorities dis agreed with a lack of exceptions for rape and incest or when the life of the mother is at risk, with 75% of respon dents, including 60% of Republicans, supporting legal abortions in the case of rape. The percentage was even higher for incest, with 79% of those surveyed supporting legal abortions in these cases. Under Missouri’s trigger law, which passed in 2019, abortions will only be permitted in cases of a medical emergency. There are no exceptions for rape or incest.

Tribune ConTenT AgenCy WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden delivered an urgent call to the country Thurs day night, asserting in a prime-time speech that American democracy remains in great peril and bluntly singling out the person he sees as the biggest threat to the system: former President DonaldSpeakingTrump.from Inde pendence Hall, where the United States’ exper iment in self-government began 246 years ago, Biden sought to rally a divided public around the nation’s bedrock princi ples. At the same time, he accused the Republi cans most loyal to Trump of abandoning those prin ciples and undermining Americans’ faith in the democratic process and the justice system. “Too much of what’s happening in our country today is not normal,” Biden said. “Donald Trump and these MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of ourAttemptingrepublic.” to dis tinguish between more mainstream Republicans and those more closely aligned with Trump and his “Make America Great Again” or “MAGA” politi cal movement, Biden said that “MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards . . . to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love.” Although Biden’s oratory was largely a sermon about the poi sonous effect of political polarization, it was also 24-minutes of heavy polit ical bombardment. Like his speech about law and order Tuesday in Wil kes-Barre, Pa., Biden’s impassioned remarks were an effort to convince voters that the Republi can party is extreme. By focusing voters on Trump and his most ardent backers in Washington, the pres ident looked to frame the November midterms, which will determine whether Democrats main tain control of Congress, as a choice between two diametrically opposed political parties, not a ref erendum on Biden’s first two years in office. “We are still at our core a democracy,” Biden said. “And yet, history tells us that blind loyalty to a single leader and the willingness to engage in political violence is fatal to a democracy. For a long time, we’ve reassured ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed. But it is not. We have to defend it.” The issue of democ racy itself, long thought to be a political dud despite threatening the nation, has become a top consideration for voters. Dramatic congressio nal hearings into the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection and the Justice Depart ment’s investigation into Trump’s apparent refusal to return classified docu ments have dominated the news of late and captured Americans’ attention. In fact, an NBC News poll last week showed “threats to democracy” ranked as the most important issue for“Wevoters.are not pow erless in the face of these threats. We are not bystanders in this ongoing attack on democ racy,” Biden said. “There are far more Americans . . . that reject the extreme MAGA ideology than those who accept it.”

DAVIS — Dan Hawkins has seen his share of talented UC Davis football teams, some of them up close and personal. The sixthyear Aggies coach often prefers the blunt approach, so he put it out there clear as a bell this week with a ringing endorsement of his“Withproduct.all due respect to the Aggies teams of the past, I think this is the best Aggie team in the history of Aggie foot ball,” Hawkins said in a media session on campus as his club prepares for its opener at Cal on Sat urday. “We have more quality players up and down our roster than we’ve had here in the Division I era.”

Hawkins is right. There is depth unlike before. There is skill, speed and ferocity that is not to be confused with teams from the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s or 2000s.

The show is a continentspanning team effort between Pittsburgh-based Fred Rogers Productions, Canadian chil dren’s media company 9 Story Media Group and 9 Story’s animation studio Brown Bag Films. Fun fact: Fred Rogers actually started a version of “Mister Rogers’ Neigh borhood” in Toronto before moving the show back to Pittsburgh. “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” is animated in Toronto as an homage to those Canadian roots. There was quite a bit of pres sure surrounding the launch of “Daniel Tiger’s Neighbor hood” back in 2012. It was the first Fred Rogers Produc tions show following the end of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” in 2001 and Rogers’ death in 2003. Chris Loggins, the show’s supervising producer, said the production team was nervous about how the show would be received by the Mister Rogers“Everyonefaithful.had a lot of great care and attention to detail going into the show, but there was no guarantee how it was going to resonate until it was out on the air,” Loggins said. “I just remember a feeling of, we think this is good and hope fully others will like it too. ... I like to think that we got it right, because we’re still around and kids and families seem to enjoy the Tammyshow.”Langton, the show’s director, has also been with “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” since its inception. She and Bambrick grew up watching both “Mister Rogers” and “Mr. Dressup,” a Canadian chil dren’s show hosted by Rogers protege Ernie Coombs. Langton was excited about being part of a Mister Rogers-related project and getting “to contribute to thatShelegacy.”worked as an assistant director on “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” before she was named director in 2018. Langton always had a sense that it could be something special. “You felt it,” she said. “The more involved that I got to be with the creative team, you just knew and could feel in the room that it was so cared for and there was so much love for Fred Rogers. . . . It’s impressive and humbling in a really nice way that we’ve been allowed to keep going and be part of people’s lives for a decade.” For Bambrick, part of the show’s lasting appeal has been its “sense of authenticity in every respect.” She appreciates that “Daniel Tiger’s Neighbor hood” never talks down to its audience, whether it’s present ing a song designed to assure children that their caregiv ers will eventually pick them up or trying to explain early 2020 Covid lockdowns in a kidfriendly way. “The one thing Fred Rogers taught us was the idea of respecting young people and giving them truth that satis fies curiosity but does it in a kind and gentle way,” Bam brick said. “I think we need to tell these stories and explain things to kids as opposed to, ‘Oh it’s fine, don’t worry about that.’ I think kids need to know about things in the right way.” Ellen Doherty, Fred Rogers Productions’ chief creative officer, used Daniel’s “grr-ific” catchphrase to describe how happy she is that the show is “still relevant and going strong” after 10 years. That was evident last year when Daniel was fea tured in a holiday tour of the White House conducted by first lady Jill Biden and earlier this year when the little tiger made an appearance at the White House’s Easter Egg Roll. Loggins thanked parents and children for “going on this journey with us” for a decade, while Bambrick simply said, “How many ways can you say thankPhotosyou?” of Daniel-themed Halloween costumes and birth day parties never cease to make Langton smile. “It’s part of their life, and they’re sharing that with us or other people,” she said. “I think that’s pretty awesome.”

PITTSBURGH — Heather Bambrick’s first indication that “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” was catching on occurred at a Toys R Us. The longtime voice of Mom Tiger was picking up a gift for a pregnant friend and was pleasantly surprised to find a whole shelf of Daniel Tiger merchandise.“That’swhen I thought, ‘OK, there are some legs here,’” Bambrick told the Post-Gazette. As the years went by, she continued to see tangible exam ples of the show’s impact on its target demographic of pre schoolers. She visited a friend in New York City who told her that she regularly uses the songs and strategies featured on “Daniel Tiger’s Neighbor hood” in her own parenting. Her “heart melted” after seeing a video of a child coming down from a tantrum after his mother asked him, “What does Daniel say?” The first episode of “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” pre miered Sept. 3, 2012, on PBS Kids. To commemorate its 10-year anniversary Saturday, PBS Kids will air a five-hour “Top Ten Tiger Tales” mar athon of favorite episodes as voted on by fans. That’s just the appetizer, though, before Fred Rogers Productions and PBS Kids debut Season 6 of “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” on Sept. 5 and kick off four days of new episodes. Season 6 will consist of 18 30-minute epi sodes that contain “Daniel Tiger” hallmarks like orig inal songs, life lessons and live-action vignettes filmed in Fred Rogers’ hometown. “This is 10 years of liveaction segments on ‘Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood’ that were all shot here in Pitts burgh,” said Paul Siefken, president and CEO of Fred Rogers Productions. “I like to think ‘Daniel Tiger’s Neigh borhood’ is the best postcard for Pittsburgh that Pittsburgh has ever had.”

RUN Just over halfway through the final of the Spingold Knockout Teams, the Pierre Zimmermann team led Paul Street’s by 76 international match points to 38. Board 32 started a Street comeback.Attheother table, North for the Street team opened two hearts, showing a weak heart-minor two-suiter. After that, West played in three no-trump, made with two unstressful overtricks. In this sequence, Klukowski (South) opened light third in hand at favorable vulnerability. Zatorski (West) preferred pass to one no-trump, hoping for a penalty. Gawrys (North) responded one no-trump, as experts do these days. After South ran to two diamonds, Pachtman balanced with a double, and West was delighted to pass. What did WestBeinglead?strong in declarer’s side suit, West led the diamond king. When allowed to hold the trick, he continued with the diamond queen. Still on lead, West persevered with the diamond jack. South took that trick, cashed the diamond eight and exited with a club. One thinks East should have pushed through the spade jack, but he shifted to a low heart, declarer winning with his ace and playing another club. Now East did lead the spade jack, covered by the queen and king. Then West played his spade three, hoping his partner had the eight, but it was not to be. Klukowski had “escaped” for down four, taking one spade, one heart and twoMinusdiamonds.660and plus 800 gave Street 4 IMPs.There were several routes to down five (and 10 IMPs).
