For many it was the first taste of freedom after slavery.” The group recreates the black cavalry units that served in the Old West from 1866 to 1891. Company G’s goal is to tell the story of the Buffalo Soldiers’ history by visit ing schools, community organizations, churches and public events. DAILY REPUBLIC — Sunday, September 4, 2022 A7

David Paul Morris/Bloomberg The Port of Oakland.

BloomBerg As summer winds down and the holiday season nears, Califor nia’s $1 billion walnut industry is gearing up for its busiest shipping season. The problem is getting nuts out the Farmersdoor.started the new market ing year Thursday with a massive backlog of product as they prepare to harvest what could be a bumper crop. The state, which grows about 30% of the world’s walnuts, makes up nearly all U.S. production. The dilemma stems from sup ply-chain bottlenecks that have cut into both foreign and domestic shipments, costing California pro ducers an estimated $1.3 billion in lost wholesale value this year alone. The logistical woes, including massive container ship congestion at California’s Port of Oakland, risk handing export rivals like Chile and China a competitive edge. The industry also has had to contend with angry customers and plum meting prices. “It’s a classic supply issue,” said Don Barton, president of GoldRiver Orchards, a walnut grower and processor in the Central Valley, a region that produces 40% of Ameri ca’s nuts and fruits. The risk of more logjams has prompted Barton to try something new: send product by rail from Cal ifornia to Virginia, where nuts are then loaded on ships for destinations like Europe and Israel. “The cost is higher but we have to do what we have to do to get our crop moving,” Barton said. The “mess” at the Oakland port, as well as a strong dollar denting the global appeal of goods priced in the U.S. currency, are among the reasons for the glut, according to Barton. Wholesale export prices for Chandler walnuts -- the leading variety grown in California -- have plunged to 80 cents a pound from $1.25 a year ago, he said. California is the biggest global shipper of walnuts and second-larg est grower after China. A third of the U.S. crop is consumed domesti cally and the rest is exported, with top importers including Germany, Turkey, Japan and South Korea. The shipping snarls began taking a big toll last year, adding to a raft of pressures.“Between trade wars, Covid and port issues, the industry has lost $3 billion over the last five years when you put it all together,” said Pamela Graviet, who serves as senior international marketing director for the California Walnut Commission.Walnuts, the oldest tree food known to humans and prized for their healthy omega 3 fatty acids, have a shelf life of around 12 to 18 months, depending on how the nuts are stored. That makes them harder to stockpile than nuts like almonds, which can stay good for more than two years. Container ship delays have meant some product sitting in hot vessels for extended periods and going bad before reaching custom ers. The top use for walnuts that are passed their prime is bird food, Graviet said. U.S. producers soon will head into their busiest exporting period as walnut demand revs up around worldwide holidays like Diwali, Christmas and Ramadan. The shipping snarls last season led to 70,000 tons worth of lost walnut sales, or about 10% of the crop, according to Graviet. “Walnuts are a part of all of those holiday traditions,” she said. “With the inability to get our product out we missed those windows.” California’s walnut output this year is forecast at 720,000 tons, down 1% from 2021, according to an updated estimate Thursday from the U.S. Department of Agri culture. If realized, the crop would be the state’s third-biggest since at least 2003. Farmers initially bene fited from heavy precipitation late last year but then orchards were hindered by hot and dry condi tions amid the the worst drought in 1,200It’syears.not just walnuts.

Almonds –California’s second high est-valued agriculture commodity after dairy – and other farm prod ucts have been hit hard by congested shipping routes. Walnut exporters and other agriculture shippers in the state are in talks with top steamship and rail carriers for a new trade pathway to bypass Oakland and get their products overseas“We’vefaster.gotmore than 2 billion pounds of almonds sitting in ware houses because they cannot get to their markets overseas,” said Gene Seroka, executive director for the Port of Los Angeles, the largest U.S. trade gateway. Agricultural exports out of southern California have been falling for at least three years now, he noted. The busiest port in California after Los Angeles and Long Beach, Oakland has faced issues ranging from capacity to labor during the pandemic. In July, the hub shut down for almost a week after truck ers protesting a gig-work law that could take 70,000 California drivers off the road blocked access to the operation.

The U.S. labor market added 315,000 jobs in August, hitting a 20-month streak in strong job growth that’s powering an economy through omi nously high inflation. The unemployment rate ticked up slightly to 3.7%, according to a monthly jobs report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday, with 344,000 more people unemployed than the pre viousThemonth.August jobs gains were the lowest monthly pickup so far this year, but the labor market remains an area of strength for the economy, especially as the Federal Reserve raises interest rates to rein in blistering inflation. The biggest gains were in professional and busi ness services, which added 68,000 jobs in August, shooting past its pre-pandemic numbers. The industry saw the strongest gains in com puter systems design, management and tech nical consulting, and architectural and engi neering services, while legal services lost 9,000Employmentjobs. in health care rose by 48,000 jobs, with notable additions in physicians, hospitals, and nursing and residential care facilities. Retail trade added 44,000 jobs, and manufacturing continued to trend up by 22,000 jobs. Employment in leisure and hospitality saw little change after average monthly job gains of 90,000 in the first seven months of 2022. The industry still remains below its pre-pandemic levels by 7%. The economy has more than recovered the 20 million jobs lost during the pandemic. Mean while, other indicators, such as a decline in economic output and per sistent higher prices for just about everything, suggest a less rosy picture, raising questions about how much longer the hot job market can last. The mixed signals have led many economists to warn that workers will eventually face a weaker job market, especially if there is a recession. And although inflation eased slightly while remaining high in July and workers have continued to see his toric wage growth this summer, paychecks have not kept up with inflation, hitting low-income house holds the Averagehardest. hourly earnings increased by 10 cents for private sector workers in August, or by 0.3 percent, to $32.36 an hour. Over the past year, wages have increased by 5.2Thepercent.labor force partic ipation rate also ticked up by 0.3 percent in August up to 62.4 percent, a sign that more Americans are looking to return to work, with many finding jobs. But that figure remains below its February 2020 levels, frustrating employers facing severe labor“Broadlyshortages.speaking, the economy is slowing even though the job market has been very hot,” said Daniel Zhao, lead econ omist at Glassdoor. “But the overall economy and job market can’t be out of sync for too long. I think the labor market still has gas left in the tank and clearly more than we expected a few months ago, but eventually it will have to fall back to earth.” The economy added 528,000 jobs in July, more than doubling fore casters’ expectations and substantially reducing recession“Thingsfears.are still very hot, but July’s report was more of a fluke than the start of an accelera tor,” Zhao said. Industries that are more sensitive to inter est rate hikes, including construction, durable goods production, mort gages and temporary help services, will see a decline in jobs first if the labor market weakens, economists say. “When we stop seeing growth in those industries, that’s when you think the first shoe is beginning to drop. It hasn’t yet,” said Erica Groshen, an eco nomics adviser at Cornell University and the com missioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics from 2013 to 2017. The strength of the job market has emboldened the Fed to take aggressive action to fight inflation.

ADDRESSESIMPORTANT

This is a rare time when I have to agree with Jack Batson. In his Sunday, Aug. 28 letter to the editor, he asks, “Do you think that ‘follow the money’ is a reasonable guide to voting?” He then asserts, “I do.” I also agree that “follow the money” is a reasonable guide to voting, which brings me to my point. Over the past six weeks or so I have received via the U.S. Postal Service an assortment of unsolicited requests from multiple political campaigns, all from back east and all from Democrats. I threw out the first few but have kept the rest just to track the trend. One was from Cheri Beasley running for Senate in North Carolina. I also received no less than three requests from Stacey Adams running for governor of Georgia. I guess she did not get the hint when I didn’t respond to the first two requests. I can only conclude that the Dem ocrats back east just assume that California has nothing but deeppocket Democratic contributors ready to respond to their desperate pleas for help.

DeSantis is the worst of it but Abbott and these other guys, they’re right there and forgive me, I’m naming them because we have to and I think people need to understand what’s going on in this country and there’s too much at stake.” On the issues that Newsom cites, par ticularly abortion and LGBTQ rights, his criticism is more than warranted. But calling rival governors “bullies” is over the top. After all, they were duly elected to their positions, as was Newsom, and like him, probably will be re-elected this year. Their positions on these hot button issues would not fly in California, but they apparently do in their That’sstates.notbullying; it’s governing, which often means compelling people to do things they’d rather not do. Newsom has done a lot of it since becoming governor nearly four years ago, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, when he was govern ing by Wasdecree.Newsom being a bully or govern ing when he ordered thousands of small businesses to shut down to stop the spread of the deadly coronavirus? Those affected, including more than 2 million workers who lost their jobs, might say he was being a bully, since larger businesses were oftenLikewise, exempted.parents complained that Newsom arbitrarily closed schools and forced their children into “Zoom school” even though Covid-19’s threat to chil dren was scant. Many of California’s city officials have complained that Newsom is bullying them into building high-density housing that their constituents don’t want, threatening legal action or financial sanctions if they don’t comply. Newsom says the state must act aggressively to solve its housing shortage. California gun owners complain con stantly that Newsom and the Legislature impose nonsensical, harassing regulations on their constitutional right to bear arms. Newsom considers all of those acts, and many others, to be governing – just as DeSantis, Abbott, et al, consider what they do to be governing. But in the eyes of beholders, he could be just as easily branded a bully. Finally, doesn’t Newsom’s name-calling make him one of the “people who demean other people” he professes to despise? Maureen Lechwar Fairfield Trump may be ‘Russian agent’ I’ve spoken with many people around the country and they tell me, “Sir, the reason top secret files were in Mar-a-Lago is because Trump was simply following Putin’s orders in his ongoing role as a Russian agent.” I say this because many media outlets are struggling to try to figure out why former President Donald Trump would have these documents. Since he rarely reads, the dis graced, twice-impeached former president may be looking for wealthy buyers. At least that’s what some folks are saying.

The actual action taken Thursday addressed to tentative subdivision maps: A large lot map to dividing 410.9 acres into 27 separate parcels, and a small lot map dividing 137.2 acres into “322 sep arate residential parcels and multiple addi tional parcels for right of way, parks and open space, Village Green, community service uses, and stormwater detention areas,” the county reports. The 1,905-acre prop erty is located in Lower Green Valley near the intersection of Green Valley and Mason roads and is designated as a “Specific Project Area” in the county General Plan. The property con tains multiple zoning districts that allow for residential, agriculture, open lands and agri tourism. It allows for 390 single-family homes, and 100 accessory dwell ing units are permitted. emyon Lohss started playing piano when he was about 6 years old. He wasn't con vinced he wanted to play, but with his father keeping a close eye on him during his first two or three years, it was less of a"Theychoice.enrolled me in a special music school," Lohss said of his parents and his early start. The music school was in addi tion to his normal grade schoolLohssattendance.eventually did take to playing, and even more so to conducting as he began rigorous aca demic training at some of the best music schools in Leningrad, where he was born and raised. He would not reveal his age, happy enough to count himself a senior citizen. His schooling was com bined at one point, and his music studies included working in a group and, more intensely, individ ual lessons. Step by step, as required, he began his musical journey. By the time he was in what Americans would con sider middle school, he stepped onto the path he has followed ever since. "In seventh grade, we had individual conduct ing lessons, so I started my conducting career when I was 13 years old," Lohss said. "I became very inter ested in conducting. But even working as a choral conductor, I thought about being a symphony conduc tor," he Lohss'said. studies included time at the world-renowned Lenin grad State Conservatory of Music, out of which he emerged, summa cum laude, with two music master's degrees in symphony and opera conducting and in choral conducting.Healso had to learn composition, but compos ing his own music was never anything for which he had a great interest. But he emphasizes that knowing how composers work is essential to being a goodDuringconductor.much of those later training years, he also worked profession ally as a conductor in both opera and symphony. "It was very interesting and extensive training," LohssThatsaid.training is still evident in how Lohss prepares each year for the Solano Symphony Orchestra season, and is marked in the career milestones that includes his 2002 debut at Carn egie Hall, for which he received a stand ingMaestroovation. Lohss is beginning his 30th season as conductor and music director of the Solano Symphony. The five-concert series begins Oct. 9 with Mozart's Flute Concerto in D. Major, and other classic works. Lohss, of course, is quite familiar with the master composers, but says there is always some thing to learn, so he immerses himself in the compositions.

That preparation is particularly necessary when the symphony is working on more con temporary and pop pieces – such as the works of John Williams that will be performed in the final concert May 21 – music with which Lohss is typi cally less familiar. One year the symphony performed a medley of tunes by The Beatles, arranged for an orchestra. Lohss recalls an even more challenging work, Chica Chica Boom Chic, a Brazilian, and some time Portuguese piece, made famous by Carmen Miranda in the 1941 film, "That Night in Rio." He said it was very difficult to find examples of the music to study.

It is also difficult to get contemporary work to perform because the material is copyrighted and very expensive, and cost is already a big factor in deciding what music to present.A75-minute concert can run the symphony up to $25,000, including paying musicians.

One of those musi cians, this season, will be Max Baluev, an accom plished violinist and the son of Lohss' wife, Anna Smirnova, a retired opera singer with an impressive international resume of her own as a mezzo-soprano.Baluevwill be the guest artist for the symphony's holiday cel ebration Dec. 4. It will include Bach's Violin Con certo No. 1 in A minor. Lohss moved from Russia to New York to be part of the BrooklynQueens Association, a private opera company. An opportunity to audition for the Solano Symphony led to crossing the U.S. to Fairfield in 1992. "The first impression was a little scary because the Solano Symphony was a very small community orchestra, so there was a lot of work to do to raise the level," he said. Lohss said by the reac tion of those who follow the symphony, the work has paid Lohssoff.also has held positions as conductor of the Leningrad Con servatory’s professional symphony and opera house orchestras, con ductor of the Leningrad State Glinka Academic Choir and music director of the Chamber Chorus of the Leningrad Choral Association.Hehasextensive expe rience in conducting orchestras, operas, ballet, chamber orchestras and choruses – in the United States and the former Soviet Union – and not long ago completed his term as associate con ductor of the Santa Rosa Symphony and music director and conductor of the Santa Rosa Symphony YouthLohssOrchestra.has a true commitment to young musicians. A competition is held each fall, with the winners in each category earning the opportunity to play with the Solano Sym phony. This season that "Salute to Youth" will take place Feb. 5. Mare Island Dock of the Bay Music Festival

Tony Wade DAILY REPUBLIC CORRESPONDENT S vocalist/composeraxophonist/flutist/ Karl Denson and his band Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe are the headlining act at the second annual Mare Island Dock of Bay Music Festival. Denson has built up a solid rep utation as a world-class musician, recording and touring with his own band as well as Lenny Kravitz and several tours with The Rolling Stones. The group’s most recent recording was 2019’s critically acclaimed “Gnomes and Badgers.” With constant touring, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe has built up a dedicated following drawn to their danceable mixture of funk, rock, soul, jazz and whatever else Denson can blend into their musical gumbo. He also records and tours with other groups that include the Karl Denson Trio, the Greyboy Allstars and, believe it or not, he was the saxophone player for the band Sexual Chocolate in the 1988 classic Eddie Murphy film “Coming to America.” Denson recently answered a few questions by telephone for the Daily Republic. Q: Let’s say it’s not 2022 with people using digital platforms to get their music. If it was back in the day and I went into Tower Records, where would I find Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe albums? A: Oh boy. That’s a very interest

The evening will include plenty of bunco but also a lasagna meal with salad, bread, desserts, wine and other beverages before kicking off the competition for cash prizes. Bunco is a dice game that has its roots in 18th century England. Its play during Pro hibition in the 1920s gave rise to the term “bunco squads” to describe law enforcement groups who raided speakeasies and other gambling dens. The game saw a rebirth as a family game in the late 20th century and early

Q: Finally, how did the Sexual Chocolate thing come to be? A: In the early ’80s I played with O’Bryan with one of my best friends from high school, Melvin Davis, who plays with Chaka Khan right now and we put a band together out of that sit uation called Kush. The drummer for Kush hap pened upon the gig of being a gopher for [“Coming to America” director] John Landis. Landis told him that he had a scene in the film that he needed a band for. So we got pulled into it. It was awesome. It’s amazing to be a part of one of the best come dies ever made. A: Writing. I’m a composer at heart. The writing is the single most important thing you do and the most challeng ing. All of us aren’t The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. I suffer to create music. Especially as an instrumental musi cian who decided to write semi-pop songs, vocal tunes, learning how to write lyrics and sing and produce is really a lot of work. There are certain people who do it so easy and are geniuses, but it’s not that way for me. I have to draw it out of myself. Every once in a while one does just fall in my lap. There’s a song on the first KDTU album called “Family Tree” and I wrote that bring ing in the groceries. It was completely done in about 10 minutes. That was kind of amazing. I think the process of putting myself in that spirit allows you to have those gifts every once in a while. You are working so hard on it that when something is all there, you recognize it immediately.

A: I think so. I think we’re easily identifiable. You know, it’s funny, so many pop singers today have the same lilt and to me they kind of all sound the same. But for my kids they are very dis tinctive. From a music lover’s standpoint, we have to watch out from becoming dated. Q: What are you working on now? A: I’m working on an Afrobeat record. Sort of an homage to Fela [Kuti –Afrobeat pioneer]. I love music and the way it makes me feel and I’m trying to make my fans feel that way, too. I try to stay current, I listen to what’s happening now, what happened before and try to make something that’s relevant to where we’re standing right now. Q: Even though you’re a world-class musician who knows a lot of other world-class musicians – is it hard sometimes to put together a band that jells? I mean, sometimes no matter the talent, it just doesn’t quite work, right? A: Sometimes, yes. As musicians get older sometimes they date themselves. Like, they don’t know what hip-hop is, they don’t know what electronica is, they don’t know what Afrobeat is. They might be in their own little bag and be great at it, but if you want to do something else, they may not have had expe rience with that. The same with playing with younger musicians who may know a lot about hip-hop and electronica, but might not know any thing about jazz or rock ’n’ roll. It’s always a chal lenge because I really try to draw from everything at the same time.

Festival From Page B1 ing question. You would find me in the jazz section. You might find me in the rock section. And it depends on what record, you know? My records change from year to year, too. I would have to say all of the above. Q: Years ago I read where someone said bands in the ’60s and ’70s had their own distinc tive sound. If you were to have The Doors, The Who, Led Zeppelin, the Motown Funk Brothers, The Beatles and Cream all play, say, “Johnny B. Goode” without the vocals, you would easily be able to identify each band. Is that true of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe?

Q: What is your favorite part of being a professional musi cian? Creating music, rehearsing, recording or performing live?

‘Let Her Sing’ concert set Sept. 10 in San Francisco

Q: Do you have any Rolling Stones or Lenny Kravitz ‘tales from the road’ stories? A: Lenny Kravitz got me The Rolling Stones gig, which is really cool. We talk once every blue moon, but we haven’t played together in 15 years and I left his band maybe 25 years ago. My best Rolling Stones story is this: Keith Rich ards has a shepherd’s pie delivered at every show. So around 7 p.m. I’ll go to his room and have shepherd’s pie with Keith Richards a couple of times a tour. Which is incredible.

A: Smart and obliv ious. (laughs) I like to think I grew up kind of “Leave It To Beaver”-ish, you know? My dad was a Marine, my mom worked, too, but was mostly home and I have five siblings. A very normal middle class family. I started playing saxophone in seventh grade and went through the school band and me and my friends had little bands all through high school. I played in a bunch of Mexican wedding bands because I was in Orange County. We had a band called De Nada, a band called Soul Incorpo rated and I was making good money on the week ends playing Tower of Power and Sly and the Family Stone, all that soul from the ’70s, at wed dings. I never thought of being a professional musician until I was into college. Q: How was the pandemic and the lock down for you? A: Other than the death and suffering it was the best year of my life. I never get that much time to be home. I like being home and being by myself. I’m pretty monkish by nature. I needed a reset. I was starting to break down physically. I was having what I thought were just old man aches and pains and I had to do things differently and it gave me a chance to figure all that out. By the end of it, I felt like a brand new guy. Like I was 10 years younger, just from having that time to reset.

New pastor coming to True Love Baptist FAIRFIELD — The Rev. Reginald W. Brown will be the new senior pastor at True Love Baptist Church in Fairfield.TheRev. Clayborn Lea of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, in Fairfield and Suisun City, will officiate the installation ceremony and worship service scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at True Love, located at 1956 Penn sylvaniaBrownAve.comes to True Love from Grace Community Church in Vacaville, where he served as senior pastor. E ver since President Joe Biden announced a student loan forgiveness program, the church has, predict ably, responded in one of twoOneways.response has been mostly posi tive. This response has focused mostly on texts like Deuteron omy 15, which prescribe that all debts are cancelled every seventh year, or on that peti tion in the Lord’s prayer that says, “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors,” or on the parable of the ungrateful servant who throws a debtor family in jail over a pittance, when he himself had been for given a lifetime’s worth of debt and more by the king (Matthew 18:23-35). A second response has been mostly critical. Forgiv ing student debt is immoral, according to some. It is a slap in the face to others who worked and scrimped to pay their debt, according to others. Such responses often deny that the principle in Deuteronomy 15, or the petition in the Lord’s prayer, refers to institutional ized financial debt and so cannot be legitimately applied to this political action by the president. I am not here to argue for either of these posi tions. I am here instead to wonder how the mostly negative and mostly critical response aligns with the New Tes tament’s call to “rejoice with those who rejoice” (Romans 12:15). I am here to wonder why the critical wing of the church is unwilling to rejoice with those whose debt has been (partially) forgiven, with those who can rejoice in part of their financial burden being lifted. It is, I suppose, possible to imagine a critical Christian response that says, “It’s great news that your debt has been reduced, and I am so happy to rejoice with you” while also thinking that the executive action to eliminate that debt is wrong. In the same way, I suppose it is possible to imagine Christians who welcome people who have had abortions all the while decrying the legality of abortion itself. But while it may be possible, I am not seeing much of that in practice. The church does not seem capable, at this moment in its history, of rejoicing with those who can rejoice over things that the church disagrees withThat’spolitically.aproblem because it exalts the church’s political views and positions above the New Testament’s proclamation about its expected behavior. So I hope those who are crit ical of the loan forgiveness that has been extended will spend some time reflecting on whether and how they can rejoice with those who are the beneficia ries of a political decision with which they disagree, on whether or not to rejoice with those who rejoice will be a fundamental part of their Christian charac ter, as Paul commands it to be. The Rev. Henry Sun is the pastor at Heritage Presbyterian Church in Benicia.

CDC researchers found that the New York man was infected with a weakened version of the virus that comes from the oral vaccine, which is still used in some countries abroad. Subsequent wastewater testing in New York found that polio has been circulating locally for up to a year, according to the CDC, which points to many more asymptomatic infections. “This one single case in New York has shown it can be the canary in the coal mine,” Wolfe said. New York is not the only place with a recent resurgence in polio. A handful of polio cases in Europe are also raising red flags for global health researchers.InJune, London health officials found evidence that polio was spread ing in the wastewater and recently announced that children between 1 and 9 would be offered a booster shot. An unvaccinated 3-year-old in Jerusalem became paralyzed earlier this year from the virus. A spokesperson for the N.C. Depart ment of Health said North Carolinians should talk with their doctors about their vaccine history and travel plans. Most people with polio do not feel sick or have minor symptoms, like a fever, headache or limb pain. In rare cases though, polio can cause perma nent and irreversible paralysis.

Then focus on ways you can connect with them. Reach out to your son and ask him what they would really be inter ested in doing with you. Give to them your time, love and atten tion, and my guess is that you will get it back tenfold. Try to let go of the jealousy you feel when they visit their deceased grandmother, and look at it as what beautiful grandchildren you have – that they honor their grandmother.

Tribune ConTenT AgenCy A dults who doubt they have been fully vaccinated against polio should talk to their doctors about getting additional shots, experts say. A confirmed case of polio in New York state has renewed a sense of urgency to make sure everyone is fully vaccinated against the potentially fatal virus, said Duke infectious disease expert Dr. Cameron Wolfe. “We never really worried about that because so many people had been vac cinated effectively that the disease was gone from the U.S. for decades,” Wolfe said. “Until now.” This is especially true for children who may have fallen behind on their vaccine series during the pandemic. The New York case, in which an unvaccinated man developed poliorelated paralysis, is the first time since 1979 there has been a polio case that originated in the U.S. The oral polio vaccine (which some may remember as a sugar cube in a paper cub) was replaced in the U.S. with a series of shots in 2000 because of its ability in rare situations to reac tivate itself into a form that was infectious.

Those who have only partially com pleted the three-dose series can go to a doctor to have their missing shots. Two doses of the vaccine are about 90% effective at preventing paraly sis while the full series is more than 99% effective at preventing polio relatedAdultsparalysis.whohave been fully vacci nated but are at high risk of exposure (e.g. health care workers who care for polio patients, or people traveling to countries like Afghanistan, where polio is still endemic) may qualify for a one-time booster shot.

The game couldn’t have started any better Friday night for Fairfield High School’s football team as quarter back Isaiah Nolan raced 50 yards for a touchdown on the Falcons’ first play from scrimmage. If only the next 47 minutes could have gone as well. Fairfield did manage to score three total touchdowns and moved the ball well, but still lost at home to Vallejo 41-18 at Schaefer Stadium. It was new head coach Alex Hubbard’s first home game. The Falcons lost their season opener last week at Benicia. “We learned we can play,” Hubbard said of the game. “If we minimize the mistakes, we can play. Every time it seemed we’d shoot ourselves in the foot.” The Falcons did do some good things, but mistakes proved costly. The Red Hawks broke free for some long offensive plays to break the game open. Vallejo was up 14-6 at the end of the first, 21-6 at halftime and 27-12 after three quarters. But the game did start well with Nolan’s touchdown on a fake handoff that caught the Vallejo defense off guard and sprung the quarterback free. The Falcons scored again when Nolan connected with Josh Tucker in the second quarter on a short pass that Tucker took down the middle of the field for a 65-yardJamontetouchdown.Mckinley had a picksix for the Falcons when he intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and raced 25 yards for a score. The 18 points is significant because Fairfield had no offensive touchdowns last season and just one last week. “We got three. That’s prog ress,” Hubbard said. “We moved the ball up and down the field in the secondTrevonhalf.” Moten rushed for 60 yards on 14 carries. Nolan com pleted three passes for 92 yards. BERKELEY — UC Davis head coach Dan Hawkins threw down the gauntlet earlier this week when he said this year’s Aggies football team might be the best in program history. So where does Hawkins stand on that idea following his team’s season-opening loss to “Well,Cal?the cool thing is, we knew we have a good football team, but that things will come together,” Hawkins said. “A lot of moving pieces.” The reality for Hawkins on Saturday was his FCS team was correctly a double-digit underdog to Cal, an FBS school in a Power Five conference, on the road. The Aggies fell, 34-13, in a game that was a touch closer than the final score indicated at Memorial Stadium on a beautiful Bay Area afternoon in front of 34,984 fans. There were a few silver linings. Davis got off to a fast start, taking a 7-0 lead early and having more yards than the Golden Bears after three quarters, 306-298. Cal’s first three possessions went for minus-7 yards and included two sacks and an interception before the Bears got going.

Vanden quarterback Tre Dimes connected with receiver Brayden Chavez for a 25-yard touchdown pass. The Vikings will be back in action Sept. 9 at home against Foothill.
