Crenshaw cannot remember a time when she wasn’t quite aware of Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, the young woman who would become queen for seven decades. The news of the death of Queen Eliz abeth II on Thursday morning left Crenshaw in tears. “It was a shock. I put the TV on this morning, and I was very upset, and I wept all morning,” said Crenshaw, 90, who was born in northern England, but raised in Kent. Many of her memories are tied to World War II, and the leadership provided by the Royal Family, who as Crenshaw recalls, never left even as the palace was bombed. Center to all of those memories is Eliz abeth, and one of the strongest is of her coronation June 2, 1953 – 16 months after she succeeded her father, King George, on Feb. 6, “We1952.will never have anyone like her again,” Crenshaw said. In her reign, which began in February 1952 after the death of her father, King George VI, Elizabeth served as a constant and reassuring figure in Britain and on the world stage as she helped lead her country through a period of profound shifts in geopolitical power and national identity. The designs of postage stamps and bank notes changed through the decades, but they all depicted the same, if aging, monarch. The British national anthem now shifts to “God Save the King,” but most Britons have only known the other version, for the queen. Her son and heir, Charles, summed up the power of her constancy in a rare television documentary aired in 2012 to mark her 60th year as queen. “Perhaps subconsciously,” he said, “people feel encouraged, reassured by something that is always there.”

from me on Bolling Drive and after school he showed me his massive and impressive comic book collection. I said I had some, too, and rattled off a few of my favorites like The Flash, Green Lantern and Batman. He scoffed and gave me a scholarly education on the superiority of Marvel comics, which has lasted me to this day, the golden age of Marvel motion pictures. In short order in the class I went from obscurity to part of what we soon dubbed the Cluttered Closet Comics Club. Brian, Boyd, Craig and I met every Thursday and would read and swap comics and also have sleepovers at each other’s houses on the weekends. I sometimes ponder what it would have been like if I had sat in a different part of the classroom, like near eccentric Forrest Glithero or sixth-grade cutie Veronica Esser or a wild and disruptive kid known only as “Bru.” While their desks were only a few feet away, that kind of distance in a class room may as well have been miles. Fortune smiled on me and I quickly cultivated three trueThenfriends.inJune of that year we moved to Fairfield and that Sep tember I was the new kid all over again.

The lilting, delicate harmonies of the Eagles song “New Kid in Town” would not have been an appropriate soundtrack to that moment, plus it wouldn’t be released until the end of that year anyway. I took an empty seat and was just glad all my anxiety didn’t trigger an asthma attack. The weight of not knowing a soul was compounded because most of the kids in the class had been there since the start of the school year and some had been living on the closed base for years so they had deep (for ele mentary school students) roots and fully formed friendships. There were some cute girls in the class, like Yvonne Dav enport and Wendy Deloatch, but I was so painfully shy and awkward (someone needs to coin a new word to describe that – shawkward?) that I made no eye contact, much less spoke to Fortunately, them. shortly after I got to class and got settled, it was time for recess. That was a lifesaver because three of the guys I sat near – Brian Elliott, Craig Powell and Boyd Taylor –needed someone to round out their four square game and Brian asked me. I thought I knew how the game was played, as I had seen girls in Virginia nicely patting the red ball to one another like tennis without a net. Uh, no. They played a cutthroat style of four square and took no pris oners. There was gloating and laughter and some good-natured put-downs when someone was bounced out of the game. All of a sudden, I was in. Brian lived down the street

A s a smart, insecure and asthmatic kid, I couldn’t imagine what could be worse than enduring the annual shock to the system called the first day back to school after summer vacation. That is, until I experienced three first days back to school in three different cities in two different states in one calendar year. The Laura Scudders bar becue potato chips, honeydew melon and jumbo cheeseburger my dad had grilled in the back yard didn’t help me get over the deep sadness I felt on Labor Day of 1975. The days of going swimming and bike riding with my brothers, spending a week at Bible camp, learning to play Scrabble from my mom in the evenings and just hanging out with my friends in Norfolk, Vir ginia, were over. On Tuesday I would have to get up earlier than I had since June and ride the bus from my Navy Cape hart neighborhood to start sixth grade at the dreaded James Monroe Elementary School. I had gone to Camp Allen Elementary School, which I could walk to, from the first to the third grade. It was new and modern (for the early 1970s) and had a killer library, which I loved. But forced busing laws designed to desegregate Virgin ia’s schools resulted in me and others being bused across town to James Monroe, which was in a pretty rough part of the city. I was not a fan of James Monroe. Now, I had friends who lived in the neighborhoods around the school as well as ones who lived near me in Navy housing. It wasn’t so much about people; it was the school itself. At that time, James Monroe Elemen tary was more than 70 years old and looked every second of it. I remember there was a basement the faculty accurately nicknamed “the dungeon” that was used for storage. I never saw a rat in there, but that’s only because they had perfected their hiding techniques. The dungeon was poorly lit and spooky and you had to walk through it to get to theThebathrooms.bathroom stalls didn’t have doors on them, like we were in prison or something. They had side barriers between them, but if someone was looking for an open stall and you were in there doing your business, they could walk by and see you. I never used those Shaw shank bathrooms. I would instead sneak into the teach er’s lavatory that was backstage in the auditorium. I never got caught in the two and a half years I was at James Monroe and it was worth having to endure the lingering stench of staff members’ cigarettes for theJamesprivacy.Monroe was danger ous. They had Norfolk cops, not security guards, patrolling the hallways. After the jarring first day of getting acclimated to new teachers and classmates and avoiding bullies, I settled in for the long haul of my final year at James Monroe. With good behavior, I would be paroled to Blair Junior High the next year, where my brother Ken went. But all that changed when we learned my dad, a career Navy man, had been given orders to move to Northern Cal ifornia to some place called Vallejo (which we pronounced “Valley Joe”). We were an anomaly for a military family as we had not moved in my entire 11-year life. So it was a very big deal to be uprooted and be relocating 3,000 miles away. The hardest part was moving away from my best friend Sam Inabinet, who had helped fuel my affinity for DC Comics and introduced me to his love of all things James Bond. In December 1975, my dad drove us across the country in our Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser station wagon and it was an adventure and a vacation rolled into one. We visited the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest among other roadside attrac tions, and overnighted in numerous Ramada Inns. When we got to California, we stayed with my Uncle Huey and his wife we called Nana in Oakland for a month until we moved to Hamilton Air Force Base. My dad worked on Mare Island in Vallejo (we learned the correct way to say it), but we never lived there. So my second first day of school started in mid-January 1976 and it was a magnitude more stressful than the Sep tember one because I literally only knew one other person in the school, my brother Kelvin. I was in Mr. Guthrie’s class and remember being escorted in by a member of the office staff.

unanimous support of Mayor Harry Price. She said Vice Mayor Rick Vaccaro had told the group they should not support Moy. “It’s hardball politics. I understand,” Moy said. Vaccaro could not be reached Wednesday forTonnesencomment. said he did not hear the comment personally, but had been told about it from at least four people, including an individual at Tuesday’s council“Honestly, meeting.I’ve just had enough,” Tonnesen said. The call for censure did not sit well with at least one member of the public who attends most of the council meetings and in many ways has been a watchdog on city finan cial“Lastmatters.night, Council man Tonnesen moved to censure Councilwoman Moy for something he was told happened at a meeting. That motion was seconded and approved. Shame on you,” John Takeuchi wrote Wednes day in an email to three of the council members, a copy of which was sent to Daily Republic Managing Editor Glen Faison. “First of all, even if true, Councilwoman Moy has the same (First Amendment) rights to express a personal opinion as any private citizen. Second, it’s hearsay,” Takeuchi added. “I expect that whoever said what Councilman Tonnesen found offensive should provide a written and signed statement to that effect. Now that you’ve opened the box, I expect a waste of everybody’s time if this ever comes up at a meeting.”Moysaid she believes the tactic will backfire on Price because Fairfield residents historically have not responded favorably to “dirty politics.” But this is not the first time Moy’s com ments have created a stir at City Hall. The council also met in closed session Tuesday on an item in which Showcase LLC, a can nabis firm, had filed a defamation claim against the city for comments the company asserts Moy made that were harmful to theShowcasecompany. had been seeking a financial settle ment from the city, but now is seeking a letter of apology. Tonnesen said there was no reportable action taken during the closedMoysession.hasdefended her Showcase remarks, calling them “protected speech,” and refuted any impres sion that she is a “loose cannon” with her words. “I am not a loose cannon. I think very much about what I say,” Moy said. She also has called the defamation claim a polit ical “smear campaign” to try to keep her from becoming the next Fair field mayor, a campaign she linked to two of her fellow council members who have ties to one of the minority owners of Showcase.Thosemembers are Tonnesen and Timm. The minority owner is Dan Sharp, who is a political operative and has worked on campaigns for the two councilmen.“That’s what it is,” Moy said about what she contends are the polit ical motives. “But it won’t work. They try this every four years and it neverTonnesenworks.”said his call for a censure has nothing to do with the cam paign for mayor. “I grew up with Cat Moy, and she’s fine. I don’t agree with her pol itics, and if the people want to elect her, fine, but I’m not going to sit by and be called corrupt; (to) call us all corrupt,” Tonnesen said. Price did not respond Wednesday to a call, nor to an email seeking comment. The third candi date running for the mayor’s seat is business man Chauncey Banks. He was not aware of what happened when reached for“Ofcomment.course, it’s a comment I can recog nize,” said Banks, who said “all African-Amer icans” are often lumped into a single category of thought or behavior. “If someone called out a comment like that to me, I would feel the same way as Mr. Tonnesen,” BanksAgain, said. Moy disputes calling all of her col leagues corrupt.

Dressed in black and with her face veiled by a mask, she seemed alone if not isolated in the oaken pews of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor. The ensuing months were marked by increas ing frailty, a rare hospitalization and a covid infection. She was unable to perform long-standing and familiar public duties. Into her 90s, she maintained a rigorous calendar of events and appearances. They num bered more than 400 in her diamond jubilee year. Her public life was defined by these duties, some seemingly trivial, such as handing out sym bolic alms, others mantled with pomp and pag eantry – the opening of Parliament or the hosting of a state dinner. To an outsider, such recurring events might seem perfunctory, but in their recurring char acter, Charles said, they “help to anchor things” in a dynamic world and, moreover, threaded the monarch through the tap estry of British life. Her role as queen defined Elizabeth’s life, but her unflagging ded ication to the job also defined the monarchy. Unlike her sister and several of her children, including Charles, she kept her personal life intact and avoided private scandal and public con troversy. The prospect of abdicating – there were calls for such a move when her great-grand son and third direct heir, Prince George, was born in 2013 – was alien to someone who clung not to power, but to duty. Dickie Arbiter, a former royal spokesman, said at the time that Eliz abeth’s piety alone would prevent it: “She sees herself of having sworn to serve for life not only to the people, but to God.” The paradox – and pos sibly the greatest feat – of her reign was her ability to be so visibly dutiful for so long without reveal ing her inner self. “Of all the world’s public figures, she is the most private,” veteran British journalist Bill Deedes wrote on her 80thThebirthday.queen never gave interviews, published her journals or stepped any where near the fray of party politics. In his book “The Real Elizabeth,” journal ist and historian Andrew Marr wrote, “Her view of her role has been that she is a symbol, and that symbols are better off keeping mostly quiet. The Queen’s style of monar chy has buried much of a sense of self, as we under stand that today. . . . The Queen is still what she does. There is only a little space (though an interest ing space) between Queen Elizabeth II and the woman who lives her life.” Toward the end of her life, as she cut back her public duties and confronted a series of per sonal crises, that space seemed ever smaller. In 2020, her grandson Prince Harry essentially defected from the royal family after his marriage to American actress Meghan Markle. In 2021, Eliza beth lost her near-lifelong soul mate Prince Philip after 73 years of mar riage, and she had to deal with the fall from grace of her second son, Prince Andrew, accused of sexual misconduct.Andyet for most of her reign, the queen was so deft at subordinating herself to her role that her subjects “actually know much less about the queen than they imagine,” said biographer Robert Lacey in a 2015 interview with The Washington Post. “But it seems to me that’s less important than that people feel they know her veryWerewell.”it not for a divorcée from Baltimore, however, the world would hardly have registered a woman known to friends by her childhood nick name of Lilibet. nnn Elizabeth Alexan dra Mary Windsor was born a royal princess on April 21, 1926, at her maternal grandparents’ house in London’s Mayfair district. Her mother, also Elizabeth, was from Scot tish aristocracy. Her father, Albert, Duke of York, was the second son of King George V. Prin cess Elizabeth’s younger sister, Margaret Rose, was born four years later. The family eventually moved to a mansion on the Windsor estate upriver from London that gave their dynasty its name. As a child, Elizabeth looked set for a genteel life of relative obscurity as a minorTheroyal.Duke of York’s older brother, Edward, was in line to succeed their father as king when he died in early 1936. But by then, Edward (called David by his family) was in love with the American socialite Wallis Simpson, whose impending divorce – her second – made her wholly unfit to become his queen in the eyes of the British establishment, including the Church of England. Edward abdicated –a shocking decision that H.L. Mencken called “the greatest story since the Crucifixion” – and Edward’s brother became King George VI. Suddenly, at the age of 10, Elizabeth lived with a king for a father and the likelihood that she would be queen one day. She was tutored in British history, and the lives of the monarchs and their fraught relationships with Parliament became less an academic lesson than a map for navigating public life. She was taught to drive a carriage and to ride sidesaddle, a skill needed later on when she reviewed her troops. During World War II, which ended when she was 19, she conspic uously did not sail to the safety of Canada, as some had advised, but stayed in England and joined the army. By then, she had found her life’s companion, Prince Philip, also a greatgreat-grandchild of Queen Victoria and the son of an exiled Greek prince. Philip was making his mark as a young officer in the British navy under the patronage of his uncle LouisTheirMountbatten.wedding on Nov. 20, 1947, amid postwar reconstruction, provided what Winston Churchill called “a flash of color on the hard road we have to travel.” Now barely remembered, the storybook nuptials between a radiant prin cess and a dashing blond naval officer foreshad owed the royal weddings of Prince Charles and the former Diana Spencer in 1981 and Prince William and the former Kate Mid dleton in Elizabeth2011. had four children, Prince Charles (1948), Princess Anne (1950), Prince Andrew (1960) and Prince Edward (1964), all of whom survive. Dear Annie: My fiancee of 10 years wants us to move forward based on lies. Last year, I found out my fiancee was having an affair. I called her out on it, and she broke it off with him. We’ve been working on things (two deaths in the family slowed things a bit and made times difficult), and for the most part, we’re doing OK. I want to forgive her and con tinue on to marriage. Problem is, she swears it was a one-week affair where they had inter course three times. But I’ve found plenty of notes, pictures and their goings-on on social media, and her family suggests it was a yearlong affair. I’ve asked her plenty of times to just tell me the truth so I can forgive and we can move forward. She keeps telling me to quit living in the past. I keep telling myself that I know the truth and that I should just let it go. But I feel I can’t move forward based on lies. What should I do? — Confused Heart in Missouri Dear Confused Heart: Enlist the help of a couples counselor to work through your fiancee’s affair and mend the damage it has caused. I also wonder – why a 10-year engagement? Perhaps in your counseling you’ll find solutions to other underlying issues that have prevented you from tying the knot sooner. It seems you and your fiancee both want to put this event behind you and move forward in your relationship and into marriage. However, it’s clear that your fiancee’s infidelity is weighing on you both. This matter can’t simply be swept under the rug or ignored. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). What's rare isn't always worth more, but if a thing is very desirable and also happens to be in limited supply, hefty prices will be paid. You possess something both rare and in demand. Don't give it away for less than it's worth.

After 49 of 60 boards in the final of the Spingold Knockout Teams, Paul Street’s team led Pierre Zimmermann’s by 10 international match points. The teams traded 2-IMP swings on the next two boards. Then came today’s deal. What happened in four hearts after West led a low diamond, covered by the king and ace? At the other table, declarer Ron Pachtman ran the heart 10, Piotr Gawrys in tempo playing the nine as a suit-preference signal for spades. South led another trump, going up with the ace when West discarded a diamond. Then came three rounds of clubs. Michal Klukowski cashed his spade ace and played another spade for down two.In this auction, three clubs was a mixed raise (four trumps and nine losers), three diamonds asked North if he liked his hand, and four hearts said that he did. The play began identically, with a diamond to the king and ace, heart 10 ducked, with East playing the nine. However, what did declarer Sjoert Brink do now? East had paused slightly over the heart 10, so South was sure he had the king. East had also produced the diamond king and had to have a high spade; otherwise, West would have led the spade ace. Thus, West had to have the club queen; else, East would have opened the bidding. At trick three, Brink led the club five from his hand! Manno, as would we all, played low, so dummy’s jack took the trick. Still not out of the woods, declarer played a club to his ace, cashed the club king, crossed to the heart ace and discarded a spade on the 13th club.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). Some minimize their talents to blend in, but you'll go the other way. Show what you can do. Stand out. Someone has to be the best, at least for a moment. You'll raise the level of com petition, and everyone will get sharper.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22Jan. 19). Focus on your per sonal fulfillment and what needs to be accomplished for you to meet your goal. It's also a good time to let go of goals that no longer seem to fit well.

DECLARER PLAY OF THE YEAR?

Dear Annie: I recently had my 50th birthday. My boyfriend and I have been dating for seven years, with a two-year break. His friend recently asked me if my boyfriend gave me a present from him. I hadn’t received the present, so I didn’t say anything to my boy friend, hoping maybe time just got away from us and he forgot. It has been over six weeks now, and still nothing. There is no chance my boyfriend is jealous of his friend in any way. Could my boyfriend be holding an old grudge from our past breakup? We broke up because of a trauma of mine that he did not handle well; he ended up disrespecting me rather than consoling me. There are some other things I feel he is shielded about, but this feels different. Is he steal ing my present, or is there something I’m not getting? This seems out of character for him. I don’t want to be in a one-sided or dishonest relation ship. — Confused Dear Confused: The fact that you’re unwilling to ask him point-blank what happened to your gift is evidence of a dis connect. Figure out what’s holding you back – are you afraid of the answer? Of him getting angry? Of other things he may be hiding from you? It’s clear that you and your boyfriend need to work on open, worksoutapistThepartiescommunication.honestNorelationshipcansurvivewithoutit–especiallyonewhereoneorbothhaveenduredatrauma.helpofaprofessionalthermightallowyoutofigureacommunicationstylethatforyouboth.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Opinions are of little value since everybody has one. Judgments, however, have consequences. You'll be asked to make a ruling on an issue that's more impor tant than it seems. Hold off until every bit of information is in. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). The very essence of an adven ture is that you don't know what's going to happen. Because of this, it's pretty commonplace for the adventurous to be some what ill-equipped. Growing into the role is half the fun.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20Feb. 18). When you're fully immersed in a situation, it's easy to lose perspective. It may feel like what you're living is your whole story when it's really just a chapter or mere paragraph in the book. Keep thinking of the big picture. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Good organization can make hard things easy. Even so, there are some messes that are not even worthy of organizing. Others dancers include actor Joseph Baena, singer Jessie James Decker, “90210″ alum Trevor Donovan, “CODA’s” Daniel Durant, “Charlie’s Angels” star Cheryl Ladd, “Sex and the City’s” Jason Lewis and former “Bachelorette” Gabby Windey.

Pimlott wrote that “in her reserve there was a vein of sadness: some claimed to see beneath the surface a hint of passion, though for who or what it was impossible to tell. Yet she remained self-sufficient, and did not lose her grip.”

She had a small and discreet circle of friends and relatives with whom she could decom press from so public a life, but even they would curtsy in greet ing to her, and she maintained a certain distance, accord ing to her biographer Sally BedellSmith,Smith.in an interview, said she came to understand Eliz abeth by delving into her Sunday-morning routines. Eliza beth would worship at the Royal Chapel at Windsor and then drive herself to see her cousin and lifelong friend, Marga ret Rhodes, who lived in a cozy cottage on the Windsor estate that the monarch had given her. Elizabeth would sit on a com fortable but faded sofa, sip her favorite cocktail of gin and Dubonnet, and chat with her cousin about the week’s events amid framed photos of family. In a rare reflective mood during an address to the Com monwealth leaders in 2011 in Perth, Australia, Elizabeth sum moned an Aboriginal proverb to express her feelings.

nnn Biographers who probed Eliz abeth’s life found that in private, and in unguarded surroundings, she was an excellent mimic, saw thrift as a virtue and enjoyed rather tame and old-fashioned amusements, such as square dancing, jigsaw puzzles, photog raphy and watching television. She owned a horse racing stable and stud farms, engaged a racing manager to work with trainers, and was actively involved in buying thorough breds. In 2013, six decades after her coronation, she watched as her horse Estimate won the Gold Cup at Ascot and reacted with unalloyed joy, beaming and clapping her hands with childlike glee. On the occasions when her safety was threatened, she showed her mettle. As she rode to Trooping the Colour, the annual ceremonial review of troops, in June 1981, a youth beth calmed her startled horse and continued on as a Scots guard tackled the youth. The next year brought an even more chilling threat. In July 1982, a stalker named Michael Fagan found his way into the queen’s bedroom. Her efforts to summon help failed, at least initially. Elizabeth later recalled, according to Lacey, that “I got out of bed, put on my dressing gown and slippers, drew myself up to my full regal height, pointed to the door and said, ‘Get out’ – and he didn’t.” Elizabeth was 5 feet 4 inches tall. (Victoria was shorter, at 4-foot-11.)Shewas a creature of habit and seemed inherently fastid ious. She followed a calendar that changed little over the years. She resided, variously, at Buckingham Palace or her pre ferred Windsor Castle, where she spent April and most week ends. She decamped to Windsor permanently at the start of the covid-19 pandemic. She spent most of August and September at Balmoral, where guests were treated to a barbe cue run by Philip. “The royals cook, and serve the guests,” recounted Tony Blair. “The Queen asks if you’ve finished, she stacks the plates up and goes off to the sink” to wash them. For Christmas and the New Year, she reigned over her family at Sandringham, her estate in East Anglia. Perhaps her favorite getaway, a bluehulled ship named the Royal Yacht Britannia, was retired in 1997 at an event where the queen was seen to shed a rare public tear. At Balmoral and Sandring ham, the public got glimpses of how Elizabeth might have lived had she not become queen: as a well-heeled English country woman in green wellies leading a gaggle of muddy Welsh corgis.

to isolate her young grandsons from the mounting hysteria. The anger became focused on the flagpole above Bucking ham Palace. The crowd outside wanted to see a flag at half-staff. For the queen, that would have been a breach of protocol and tradition – the palace flagpole was there to fly the royal stan dard only when the monarch was in residence.“Inthe strange symbio sis between ruler and ruled, the people were insisting that the Queen acknowledge that she ruled by their consent, and bend to their insistence,” Tony Blair, prime minister at the time, wrote in his memoir. “Public anger was turning towards the royalHerfamily.”initial intransigence, however, melted after entreat ies from her advisers. The flag flew, she returned early from Balmoral, in time to appear with the crowd in front of Buck ingham Palace, then broke her silence in a televised address. She refused to lionize Diana, but she grieved for her: “No one who knew Diana will ever forget her. Millions of others who never met her, but felt they knew her, will remember her.” The episode was a rare reminder that for all its history and presence in the fabric and psyche of British life, the monar chy is a fragile institution. Wallis Simpson, the woman whose fate altered Elizabeth’s destiny, wrote of being unpre pared for Edward’s abrupt rejection by an establishment that had put him on a pedes tal. “Nothing that I had seen had made me appreciate how vul nerable the King really was, how little power he could actually command,” she wrote. nnn Then-Princess Elizabeth and her husband were in Kenya and on their way to Australia, taking the place of her ailing father on an official visit, when she learned that the king had died. She flew home as the 25-year-old queen, to be greeted at the airport by a somber phalanx of leaders, including Churchill. Her crowning the following year provided a much-needed dose of glamour and optimism –about a new Elizabethan Age – in a country suffering from postwar austerity, sharp political and social divisions, the dismantling of its colonial empire and declin ing global influence. Her coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953 – the day that word reached London that mountaineer Edmund Hillary of New Zealand had placed a Union Jack atop Mount Everest in a British-led expedition.Formore than 400 years, the English sovereign has had to navigate the role of being head of state while ceding political power to Parliament and main taining strict partisan neutrality. By dint of her longevity and dil igence, however, Elizabeth had a significant behind-the-scenes advisory role to a succession of prime ministers who traveled each Tuesday from Downing Street to Buckingham Palace to see her. In those sessions, she offered the political leader of the day confidential advice from her unique perspective of national life and knowledge of foreign leaders and diplomats. Whether the prime ministers took her counsel may have been another matter – the sessions were as private as conversations in a confessional.Atfirst, her influence was limited by her lack of experi ence: Churchill was by 1952 an old lion who still spoke fondly of Queen Victoria. But with the passing years, Elizabeth saw prime ministers come and go, and could offer a long-term view enriched by a fierce memory for names and events. “The boot is on the other foot,” Prince Charles said in the 2012 BBC documentary. After so long, “it’s the queen who has Sir Winston’s span of experience.” In general, Elizabeth was known to have clicked more with some prime ministers than others. In the early 1970s, Edward Heath “treated her as a piece of necessary business,” wrote an Elizabeth biographer, Ben Pimlott. Worse, the proEuropean Heath was openly antagonistic to Commonwealth interests and once blocked her from attending a conference of leaders in Singapore. As the monarch of the Com monwealth of 15 realms and more than 50 nations, Elizabeth kept Britain closely linked to its former territories. In 1999, Aus tralians rejected a referendum to become a republic in a vote seen as reflecting a loyalty to Eliza beth rather than the U.K. Much was made of the supposed chilly relationship between Elizabeth and Marga ret Thatcher, who denied any undue friction. The Iron Lady’s grandiose manner made for an awkward pairing, Pimlott argued. Thatcher would sit tensely on the edge of her seat, which in itself unsettled the queen. “Audiences ceased to be intimate occasions, and became brisk, formal ones,” he wrote. Two of Thatcher’s prede cessors, Anthony Eden and Harold Wilson, found a form of therapy in the sessions, and drew them out. “Wilson was most enthused about his royal audiences as he came to feel besieged by minis ters from left – and right-wing factions,” wrote Marr, the jour nalist and historian. nnn As a wife and mother, Eliz abeth guarded her privacy withThereferocity.were times when Prince Philip’s will clashed with the wishes of the prevailing political leaders. Given Philip’s take-charge persona, those epi sodes led to some of the queen’s most trying times, according to biographers.Philipbalked at moving to the cavernous and court-domi nated Buckingham Palace but was overruled. When his uncle smugly announced after the king’s death that the House of Windsor would become the House of Mountbatten, the name change was swiftly put down by Churchill, to Philip’s humiliation. amoeba,” he complained. Javin White, the former Vanden High School football player and MyClymonds High graduate, was waived by the Chicago Bears by injury designation after suffering a season-ending ACL tear himself. White opened summer camp with the New York Jets before being traded to Chicago where he was subsequently injured. Will C. Wood graduate Carson Strong was signed as a free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was released after throwing only four passes during the preseason. Walker has quickly earned himself respect around the league, giving the Falcons plenty of pro duction since being selected as a fourth round draft pick (119th overall) in 2020 out of Fresno State. The former high school and collegiate Bulldog has played in 33 games during his three-year career and started eight of them. He has a total of 80 tackles, four pass deflections and a forced fumble. Cam Inman BAY AREA NEWS GROUP SANTA CLARA — Running back Elijah Mitchell looks ready to emerge in a marquee role Sunday, while most eyes are fixated on two other second-year players: quarterbacks Trey Lance and Justin Fields. “Last year I did good, but every year, you want to build. I’m excited to see what I have in store,” said Mitchell, who did not play in the preseason because of a hamstring injury. “I had 900 yards last year (963 in 11 games) and I definitely want to top that,” Mitchell added. “That’s one of my goals, and the Super Bowl –that’s what we all want.” As Thursday’s practice opened amid 99-degree heat wave – the hottest on these fields in recent memory – Mitchell went over the script with running backs coach Anthony Lynn before team drills began at about the 30-minute mark. That’s when the media is ushered off the field. But Mitchell has been No. 1 in the rushing rotation since returning last month’s hamstring issue – and since bursting on the NFL scene in last year’s opener at Detroit.Mitchell scored the goahead touchdown in last season’s win at Chicago, but only after nine team mates helped push him across the goal line on the 5-yard, fourth-quar ter score. That was the first play shown in the 49ers’ film review the next day, because it showed: “that they have my back and we’re all working together. That’s the men tality we’ve still got.” Mitchell ran for a season-high 137 yards (18 carries) in last sea son’s win at Soldier Field, which installed Bermuda grass last week for the first time in its storied history.

A’s withsystemminor-leagueimprovesbigtrades by m att K awahaR a SAN FRANCISCO OAKLANDCHRONICLE— One aim of the Oakland Athletics’ teardown this season was to use bigname trades to fortify the minor-league system, which has garnered less esteem in recent years. And the A’s did acquire a wave of new prospects – especially on the pitching side, with a group of arms already being tested in the majors and another at the minors’ lower levels. Yet the extent to which that bolstered the overall system is viewed with temperance, at leastEnteringoutwardly.this year, Baseball America ranked the A’s farm system 27th in the majors – that rose to 19th in its midseason rankings after Oakland executed a series of ros ter-altering deals. MLB Pipeline placed the A’s at 28th as of late 2021 and 17th at midseason this year – a jump, yet still in the majors’ lower half. “I think it’s definitely stronger,” A’s director of player development Ed Sprague said. “If you look up and down the system, I wouldn’t say we have a tremen dous amount of depth at every position because it’s all kind of at differ entThelevels.”A’scurrent stand ing – Baseball America placed their system ninth in 2019 – reflects a few factors. Their top pros pects that year ( Sean Murphy, A.J. Puk, Jesús Luzardo – since traded to Miami) graduated to the majors. A series of light draft classes left a bit of a gap behind them. Murphy and Puk were taken in the early rounds in 2016. Shortstop Nick Allen, a rookie this year, was the A’s third-round pick in 2017. But the A’s first-round picks from 2017-19 – Austin Beck, Kevin Merrell, Kyler Murray, Logan David son – are toiling in the minors or didn’t pan out. Add in touted inter national signings yet to make an impact ( Lazaro Armenteros, Robert Puason) and some pros pects traded to aid the major-league roster (Luzardo, Dustin Harris, Greg Deichmann) and it helps explain the dip.

Newsom feels heat on farm labor measure from union G ov. Gavin Newsom will soon write a new chapter in California’s decades-long con flict over the unionization of workers in the state’s huge agricultural indus try – and what he does could affect his obvious quest to become a national political figure. Assembly Bill 2183, a measure that would make it easier for the much-troubled United Farm Workers Union to orga nize farmers’ employees is sitting on his desk, passed by overwhelming margins by New som’s fellow Democrats in the Legislature.Theunion’s drive for using a card check process or mailed ballots took on urgency when the U.S. Supreme Court declared in 2020 that it had no right to enter farmers’ property to talk with their workers, exacerbating the UFW’s chronic inability to make significant organiza tionalThatinroads.failure, union leaders say, is due to farmers’ undermining organizational elec tions, which now are conducted by secret ballot. However, the UFW has also suffered from its own organization shortcomings as journalist Miriam Pawel chronicled in her authoritative book, “The Union of Their Dreams.” Newsom vetoed an earlier version of the bill last year, saying it “contains various incon sistencies and procedural issues related to the collection and review of ballot cards,” and adding, “Significant changes to California’s well-defined agricultural labor laws must be carefully crafted to ensure that both agricul tural workers’ intent to be represented and the right to collectively bargain is protected, and the state can faithfully enforce those fundamen tal Thisrights.”year’s version contained some changes the UFW and its allies hoped would placate Newsom, but just before final votes last month, Newsom once again indicated his opposition. “We cannot support an untested mail-in election process that lacks critical provisions to protect the integrity of the election,” Newsom spokes person Erin Mellon said. Newsom’s unusual preemptive declaration may have been an indirect request that the Leg islature not send him a second measure, but it didn’t deter legislators from acting with 55 votes in the Assembly and 26 in the Senate. If anything, it spurred the UFW to redou ble its public campaign, including a highly publicized weeklong march to the Capitol from Delano, site of a 1965 grape worker strike that led to formation of the UFW and in 1975 to passage of the state’s Agricultural Labor Relations Act.

The UFW also formally joined the California Labor Federation after former Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez took the umbrella organiza tion’s helm and obtained expressions of support from national political figures such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and, this week, Presi dent Joe Biden. “In the state with the largest population of farmworkers, the least we owe them is an easier path to make a free and fair choice to organize a union,” Biden said on Labor Day.

Today’s youth losing some practical skills

Opinion DAILY REPUBLIC — Friday, September 9, 2022 B3 CALMATTERS COMMENTARY

probably reading this and reacting with the same expression I had on my face. I gave them a moment or two to tap into their creativity for a practical solution. Five minutes . . . 10 minutes . . . Still no solution until I walked up to the garbage bin to rip off a piece of cardboard. “Any ideas now, fellas?” I said. Finally, I see their faces light up with relief as they use the cardboard to sweep up the debris. I wouldn’t have been surprised if one of them pulled out their iPhone to search Google for “How to clean dust from the floor without a dust pan.” This was very concerning. How can we cultivate more problem solving and creativity in our current youth? Activities that culti vate cognitive development include board games, arts and crafts, cross word puzzles, engaging discussions and playing an instrument. If you are working with youth, give them phys ical projects that encourage them to be resourceful and creative. Even simple chores around the house will help in their development. Hopefully your young ones will actually figure out how to replace the battery in the smoke alarm. Lord help us!

All of this puts Newsom in a political pickle. If he signs the bill, he will not only be revers ing himself on a high-profile issue – never good optics for an ambitious politician – but could be providing critics with ammunition should he someday be seeking presidential votes in agri cultural states that are critical in White House contests, such as Iowa, Ohio and Florida. However, if he vetoes the measure, it could make it much more difficult for him to gain support in the Democratic Party’s progressive/ activist wing, to which unionization of workers in agriculture and other low-wage industries is a holy grail. Delores Huerta, the UFW’s most revered figure, has predicted that Newsom would sign the bill because he’ll want union support for a presidential campaign.

T he sun has finally set on the British Empire. Its last rays were embodied in the stead fast person of Queen Elizabeth II, who died Thursday after more than 70 years on the throne. Hers was the longest reign in British history, during which the country strug gled to find its postcolonial identity. Ten days of ceremonies will mark her passing – no one outdoes the English on ceremony – during which everything that can be said will be said of the Forever Queen. Here, while the news is still news, are a few brief observations on the person, the historical figure and the symbol that was Elizabeth Windsor. We often think of duty in the context of a particular moment: the soldier in battle, the first responder in an emergency, the citizen in the jury box. The queen's entire life was a duty fulfilled. She first appeared on the cover of Time magazine in April 1929, a public figure at age 3. You might think the palaces and courtiers and jewels were ample com pensation. But consider all the people around her who saw the royal life up close and wanted out. Her uncle abdi cated the throne. Her children chafed under the scrutiny. A grandson decamped to Hollywood and bared his soul to Oprah. Each wished in some way to have a life apart from royal duty. They wanted it to be a job, not an identity. They wanted to be individuals, with passions and quirks and the occa sional bad day. Elizabeth understood her duty to efface herself in service to a highly abstract role: The Queen. The same tomorrow, the same next year, the same more than 70 years after she began. I met her briefly in 1985, at a com memoration of U.S. aid to Britain under the Marshall Plan. I was in graduate school; she had been queen since my parents were in college. I was warned not to initiate a hand shake, but she reached to shake mine, supremely dignified but not aloof. She was as close to a complete blank as anyone I had ever encountered. That was her duty: not to be inter ested or uninterested; not to be happy or grumpy; not to hurry or tarry. She wasn't there as a person. She was there as The Queen. History will record that Queen Elizabeth's self-discipline and devo tion to duty most likely saved the monarchy. Tidal forces of the 20th century – the world wars, the spread of democracy, the end of colonialism, the decline of institutions and the rise of individualism – conspired against the anachronism of inherited author ity. She neither resisted those forces nor gave them an opening against her. Instead, she maintained a relation ship with Britain's former colonies and realms as head of the Common wealth. This attractive enterprise of more than 50 nations grew out of the imperial past, but instead of power and exploitation it stands for shared prosperity and mutual ideals. Nations have joined the Commonwealth that had no colonial ties to Great Britain at all. Her husband sometimes said offensive things – but Elizabeth never did. Her children sowed wild oats – but Elizabeth never did. When people complained about the cost of the monarchy, she volunteered to be taxed. When people com plained about the coldness of the Windsors, she warmed her affect. For the 2012 Olympics, 60 years into her service, she played herself in a film spoof, parachuting into Olympic Stadium in the company of James Bond. She made monarchy palatable to the modern age. We'll see how long that lasts without her. This is not a question for Britain alone. As queen, Elizabeth sym bolized something in short supply throughout the West: unity. She was not of any party or faction. She was not of the left or of the right. She was not of the North or of the South. Though she was once the wealthiest woman in Britain, she liked loyal dogs and muddy boots. Her very existence – so diligently and dutifully fulfilled – was an appeal to the idea that such a thing exists as a British people, bound together not just by geography, and certainly not by belief, but by a past and a living culture. When the voters elected a Conservative government and later elected a Labour government, and switched again, and again, and again, across decade after decade, every prime minister's first act was to see the queen. Her ceremonial invitation to form a government embodied the principle that dueling parties serve the same nation. It scarcely needs saying that this principle is endangered today, not just in Britain but in every nation where people are free to express their differences. We begin to fear that differences alone will destroy us, should we lose the remaining threads that bind us. David Von Drehle writes a twiceweekly column for The Post. He was previously an editor-at-large for Time Magazine, and is the author of four books, including "Rise to Greatness: Abraham Lincoln and America’s Most Perilous Year" and "Triangle: The Fire That Changed America."

I t is an honor and privilege to work with our current youth in various capac ities as an instructor, coach, mentor and parent. With much love and respect, I am reasonably concerned about the develop ment of today’s youth. Over the years, it seems we are progressively losing good old common sense and practical wisdom. Part of the blame is on the conve nience of modern technology, which has enabled this youth generation into dependency. Take away the smart phones and social media and some of them are all but dysfunctional. It seems as though our dependency on technology has resulted in a sedated mindset. It has also hindered their capacity to be resourceful. Reading a compass, a map or a newspaper is obsolete to them these days. Is this a fair generalization of our current youth? Is it safe to say we have declined in practical problemsolving skills? The most resourceful genera tion of modern society are now baby boomers who are currently around the retirement age. My generation learned and was raised by these inno vators, but we have lost our power of influence on our own children. Those of us who grew up in the 1970s had to create our own entertainment from hop scotch to hide and go seek. We built our own bikes; we made slingshots with hangers and kites out of news paper. We had skills. I have a few youth in my circle. Some are college stu dents who struggle to use a manual can opener. On a previous occasion, we were working to clean up the facility we were using for a youth activity. My simple instructions to the group of youth and young adults were to sweep up the dust and trash from the floor. I’m not the microman aging type so I left them with the freedom to handle the task on their own. When I returned, I saw a pile of dust and debris still in the corner of thePuzzled, facility. I asked why the pile was stillThethere.response was interesting: “We don’t have a dust pan.” Really? So you’re going to leave it there? I asked. The look I received from these three young men was that of, “Yeah, dude! What else are we going to do?” Now I was exercising patience but growing frustrated at the same time. Between the three of them they couldn’t figure out how to get the trash up without a Everyonedustpan.overthe age of 30 is

In its main feed, Amazon will overlay stats and game updates using what it calls X-Ray technology. It will offer an alternate stream for younger audiences, hosted by a group of YouTube personalities called Dude Perfect, and will also carry games on Twitch, an Amazon-owned site popular among video-game enthusiasts.

BloomBerg When the National Football League’s regular season kicks off Thursday, millions of fans will settle into their easy chairs to watch America’s biggest, richest sport. But a different, multibillion dollar match will unfold a week later. Starting Sept. 15, viewers who want to watch “Thurs day Night Football” will have to log in to Amazon.com Inc.’s Prime Video streaming service. The contest between the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs is the first regu lar-season game in an 11-year, $13 billion deal that makes Amazon the exclusive home of “Thursday Night Football.” It’s the first time a stream ing service has obtained exclusive, season-long rights to NFL games in the United States, and it presents a big challenge to major net works – like CBS, ESPN, NBC and Fox – that have dominated televised sports for generations. If Amazon can attract the mil lions of viewers and prestige advertisers that football usually draws, other leagues, like the NBA, may be more willing to offer exclusive packages to online“Thisheavyweights.isaninflection point,” said Daniel Cohen, executive vice president of global media rights consulting at Octagon, a division of the ad giant Inter public Group of Cos. “We’ll look back on this season of Amazon exclusively produc ing and distributing NFL games as a turning point in sports broadcasting.”Sponsorsflock to the NFL because it’s one of the few places to reach a large live audi ence – this year’s Super Bowl, for instance, drew an audience of 112 million in the U.S., about seven times the number who tuned in for soccer’s World Cup final four years earlier. It’s also the last strong hold of the networks. While films and TV series have shifted to streaming, people still need cable or satellite TV to watch most live sports. Sports accounted for nearly all of the 100 most-watched broadcasts on TV last year, with profes sional football alone amounting to 75 of them. With an NFL deal in hand, Amazon is positioned to capture a cut of the $66 billion US TV advertising market. Over the last couple of years, Amazon and Apple Inc. have started to buy their way into this exclusive club, acquir ing rights to baseball, soccer, tennis and other sports around the world. But these deals have mostly been for partial pack ages or in smaller markets. “Thursday Night Football” provided Amazon with an opportunity to get in the big game. Three of the league’s biggest partners, CBS, NBC and Fox, had all aired Thursday night games and found it hard to make money, in part because the league tended to stick them with less-desirable matchups.

JUST AN OVERTRICK – WHO CARES? After 52 of the 60 boards in the final of the Spingold Knockout Teams at the Summer North American Championships in Providence, Rhode Island, Pierre Zimmermann’s team had just taken a lead of 1 international match point over Paul Street’s squad. This was Board 53. Look at the South hand. What would you bid after the given start to the auction? Since partner is allowed to double lighter in the fourth position than in the second, there is a tendency for the advancer (here, South) to underbid slightly. Andrea Manno saw it that way, advancing with one no-trump, which was passed out. However, Michal Klukowski upgraded for his aces and 10s. (Edgar Kaplan’s 4Cs method rates this hand at 10.9 points.) He sensibly invited game by jumping to two no-trump. Then Piotr Gawrys liked his hand enough to bid game. At IMPs, when you smell a game, bid it! The play was similar at both tables. The declarers won with dummy’s spade ace and played two rounds of diamonds. In the fullness of time, each declarer took one spade, two hearts, four diamonds and two clubs. That gave 10 IMPs to Zimmermann and the lead by 11. Each declarer had a couple of chances to take 10 tricks. If Manno had done that, the swing would have been only 9 IMPs. However, what does 1 IMP matter? Well, Street regained 10 IMPs on the next board, but the last six deals were all flat. Pierre ZimmermannFernando Piedra, Sjoert Brink-Sebastiaan Drijver and Gawrys-Klukowski had won by 116 IMPs to 115.

Amazon breaches TV’s last stronghold with $13B bet on NFL

The first challenge for Amazon will be making sure people know where to find “Thursday Night Football.” The company plans to buy ads on cable-TV channel guides to remind fans that the Thursday games aren’t on TV anymore. Amazon also struck a deal with DirecTV so the games will still be available in bars and restaurants, and home-town fans will be able to see their teams on local stations when they play on Thursday nights. In addition, the company plans to promote the broadcasts atop everything from the Amazon. com homepage to the cardboard boxes that Prime subscribers have delivered to their homes.

“We said let’s step back and look at it differently,” Donoghue recalled. “Let’s look at it as a once-in-a-decade opportunity to create appointment viewing for tens of millions of fans.” Amazon has long invested in entertainment to entice cus tomers to its Prime business. Prime members pay $139 a year to get faster, free shipping, as well as access to video and music services. They shop more than people who aren’t Prime customers. In March 2021, Amazon agreed to pay about $1.2 billion a year for exclusive rights to “Thursday Night Football” –an 80% increase over what Fox Corp. paid under the previ ous deal, but less than what other networks pay for Sunday and Monday timeslots. Not long after signing, the NFL added another wrinkle: The league was ending its Thurs day night deal with Fox after the 2021 season, a year earlier thanThatexpected.meant Amazon had to be ready a year early. Both Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy and Chairman Jeff Bezos signed off. The show is being shep herded by Fred Gaudelli, who has been producing primetime football for more than 30 years. Longtime broadcaster Al Michaels will handle play by play and Kirk Herbstreit, best known for his college foot ball analysis, will provide color commentary.Gaudelli will use most of the standard features of a football broadcast, includ ing a pregame show, sideline reporters and a halftime show. Several former NFL players, including Ryan Fitzpatrick and Richard Sherman, will serve as analysts before, during and after games. But he also knows Amazon needs to do more.

Amazon had streamed NFL Thursday games that also aired on the NFL Network and Fox. But it had never had an NFL package to itself. The company made early headway streaming sports in Europe. Deals there are shorter than in the U.S., creating more opportunities for newcomers.

Amazon snagged rights to stream the U.S. Open tennis tournament in the UK and Ireland and acquired Premier League rights in the UK, as well as the Champions League soccer tournament in the U.K., Italy and Germany. In the U.S., Amazon started showing some exclusive New York Yankees games and became the streaming home of soccer’s Seattle Sounders. But it had a harder time convincing major sports leagues to entrust a streaming service with multi billion-dollar media rights. As the NFL prepared to seek a new round of media deals, Marie Donoghue, Ama zon’s vice president of global sports video, moved to con vince her bosses to make a big offer. A near 20-year ESPN veteran hired by Amazon in 2018, she drafted a document that outlined all the reasons that NFL rights would benefit the company and its customers.

Amazon had over $60 billion in cash and marketable securities on its books at midyear, more than double the combined sums of ABC/ ESPN owner Walt Disney Co., CBS parent Paramount Global, NBC parent Comcast Corp. and Fox. Amazon has told advertisers it has an abundance of data on Prime subscrib ers and could serve up targeted ads that lead to purchases, said the person, who asked not to be identified dis cussing negotiations withAmazonsponsors.is guaran teeing advertisers it will reach more than 12 million viewers per game, down from about 16.4 million last year, the person said. Those pro jections were reported earlier by the Wall Street Journal. About 80 million households have watched Amazon Prime Video at least once in the past year, accord ing to the company, about the same number who subscribe to a pay-TV service. The arrival of Amazon and Apple on the sports media landscape has been celebrated by leagues whose media rights become more valuable when there are more bidders. It has worried media compa nies that now must compete with tech giants that have more money and other business goals.

Tribune ConTenT AgenCy Their raucous capacity crowd of 25,527 fans chanted “We want the cup” before a ball was kicked. Orlando City delivered Wednes day night, capturing the first major piece of silverware since the club joined Major League Soccer seven years ago. A couple thousand Sacramento Republic fans watched in shock as their team’s dream run through the US Open Cup fell apart in the closing minutes of the cham pionship game. Facundo Torres hammered the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute, and slotted home an insurance penalty five minutes later as the host Lions defeated sec ond-tier Sacramento 3-0. “We are very proud of the com munity, of the club, the fans, the players. To have this opportu nity to bring this trophy means a lot,” Orlando City manager Oscar Pareja said. “It was against a very tough rival, a very competitive match that after 50-60 minutes looked like a really tough final. After that, we could open the score and give more confidence against theirPriorblock.”tothis year, Orlando had never advanced beyond the U.S. Open Cup semifinals. The club has won just one MLS playoff game since its expansion cam paign in 2015. And yet, Orlando was far from the biggest underdog on the pitch Tuesday night – let alone in Ameri ca’s premier multi-tier tournament. Sacramento Republic embarked on a magical run to become the first second-division side to qualify for the championship game since 2008. “I think the guys made the city proud, everyone associated with the club proud,” Republic manager Mark Briggs said. “I think this run has ignited a flame in the city and got the supporters behind the club and buzzing about the club again after, obviously, a dark cloud was over it for a little bit.” Sacramento was awarded an MLS franchise in 2019, with plans to enter the league this year. However, prospective majority owner Ron Burkle backed out of the deal in February 2021. Republic took down MLS opposition in three consecutive round, San Jose, LA Galaxy iand Sporting KC.

Giants From Page B1

Kickoff From Page B1 relief in the second game, the happiest moment for the Giants – and anyone watching – had to be reliever Scott Alexan der exchanging lineup cards with his brother, Jason, a Brewers pitcher, before the start of the second game. The brothers grew up in Sonoma County, rooting for the Giants (though Scott claimed he was a bigger fan), where their parents, Rich and Marion, were almost certainly watching on television.Scott, who had never shared a field with his younger brother by four years, served as an effective opener for Jakob Junis in the first game, and called the experience with his brother – however brief – “a once-in-a-life time“I’mthing.”just really happy to be able to share that moment with him,” Alex ander said. “That was probably one of my favor ite moments I’ve had so far in my career. . . I know my parents will be proud andThehappy.”combo of Junis and Alexander held Mil waukee hitless once through the lineup, and Junis tossed six strong innings after taking over in the second, but one blip in the fourth was all the Brewers needed with Burnes on the mound. Their opener strat egy in the second game, however, put them in a deficit their anemic offense wasn’t able to make Leftyup.Alex Young walked two of the first three batters he faced in the bottom of the first and allowed a single to the other. All three came around to score, while Young failed to make it out of the inning. With the bases loaded and the infield playing in, Evan Longoria wasn’t able to handle a hard-hit ground ball from Hunter Renfroe, which snuck into the outfield and plated their first two runs. Once Hjelle entered, though, the Brewers’ bats wentHjelle, silent. the 6-foot-11 right-hander, had struggled to get hitters out in 22 Tri ple-A starts (4.92 ERA) and in his first three big-league appearances (9.00 ERA). But he was a different pitcher Thurs day, hitting 96 mph on the radar gun for the first time as a big leaguer and adding nearly full mile-per-hour in average velocity. A new, sharper slider helped him get out lefties, too, which he did twice against Christian Yelich, even striking him out.

“I will always be grate ful for not only our years coaching together, but the friendship we share,” Wight said. “One thing people may not know about Clint, that I really think is the reason for his success, is that his kids love him. It’s the kind of love that inspires people to do things they didn’t think they could do otherwise.” Armando Orozco filled half of the coaching position left vacant in 2015 when Wight resigned to pursue a career in school administration, and Birch and Orozco led the program together until this past March.
