South won with his heart ace, cashed the club ace and took two diamond winners, happy to see West follow throughout. Now came a heart. West was welcome to three tricks in that suit, but then he had to lead away from his spade king.

Dear Annie: I regret not visiting my mother enough when she was alive.
So, South played a heart to dummy’s king and returned a heart. When East discarded a diamond (playing red on red!), declarer paused. If West had five hearts, he surely had at least five spades. It is dangerous to lead from an unsupported king around to a big balanced hand. Maybe West could be given the lead in hearts and forced to sacrifice a third spade trick.

Strangely, despite having all four aces, that South hand is a borderline two-no-trump opening. Edgar Kaplan’s 4Cs method rates it at only 19.55 points. The barren 4-3-3-3 distribution and poor spot cards reduce the hand’s worth. North was right not to use Stayman. He had 4-3-3-3 distribution, and his point-count meant that they presumably had at least 29 combined points. Three no-trump was probably making, but four hearts might fall to a bad trump break.

The audacity of 9/11 – using 19 alQaida fighters, civilian lives and lakes of jet fuel to carry out a massively destructive attack – finally convinced Americans that we were at war. And for the next 20 years, we fought until we tired of the idea.
In the starting and ending of wars, the letting of blood and the waging of battle, the enemy has a vote. The day that has come to be known as 9/11 began a war only for us; for the enemy, the war had been raging for years. The little army of Osama bin Laden had hit American embassies in Africa, bombed a U.S. naval ship at Aden Harbor in Yemen, even signaled its intentions to destroy the twin towers by planting a truck bomb in a World Trade Center garage in 1993.

How to get kids to eat a healthy lunch?
Make the sauce: In a medium bowl, whisk together the sunflower butter, vinegar, soy sauce and ginger until combined. Taste, and if desired, whisk in the honey until combined. Whisk in the water, a couple of tablespoons at a time, until the sauce is creamy and to the desired thickness. Stir in sriracha, to taste. The dip itself is fun to make with kids – it’s espe cially eye-opening for them to see how it comes together in the food processor. You can use another type of bean, such as pinto or kidney, to make this dip, or you could substitute store-bought hummus. As for the dippers, the sky’s the limit. Roll-up sandwiches are always a win, but they somehow taste better when you get to roll them yourself in the moment, with ingredients you choose. Let your child help decide which elements to include. You’ll need some kind of wrapper – one large tortilla or two small ones, or a couple of slices of wholegrain bread flattened with a rolling pin. (Be sure to pack the wrapper in a zip-top bag so it stays pliable.) In another container, pack the filling ele ments – all thinly sliced or shredded for easier layering and rolling – such as slices of turkey or ham, cheese, shred ded vegetables such as carrot, and cabbage and lettuce leaves with the ribs removed for easy rolling. Add a small container or packet of whatever sandwich condiment your child prefers, along with a utensil to spread it. Q: You call strawberries “fun.” What exactly is fun about them?
A: We’re designing crosses or which pairs to combine. We’ve got genetic data on all the potential pairs, data from 50,000 locations in the genome, and we use that to make predictions on what the off spring are likely to be like. Then we plan out populations of those offspring. Once you get one good plant, you can multiply that up into millions of plants.

A: I want a strawberry that is juicy and not too firm but also not too soft, with a good balance of sweetness and acidity. Some of the strawberries that are superhigh in sugar are actually really insipid, because there’s just no balance to it – it’s like drinking Kool-Aid. Strawberries also have very cool aromatic compounds in them. Some are one-note, but I prefer a symphony of aromas.
Q: What’s the “perfect strawberry”?
A: There are definitely things we created that we quickly deter mined no one would want. There was a strawberry that we were calling the “body-odor berry,” because the aroma was way too reminiscent of that. And then there was a hybrid of two wild species that tasted just like gorgonzola – just really pow erful cheese.
Q: What’s on the horizon of strawberry research?
A: The things people were growing in the 1700s and 1800s, they’ve changed quite a bit. The most notable thing would be firm ness of fruit. The old varieties were very soft – you basically had to eat them straight from the field. And if you go back to old illustra tions of strawberries they’re all kinds of random, lumpy shapes with creases. We’ve gotten much more demanding on regular ity in shape.

A: Working with a plant where people actually want what you produce is kind of nice. The world needs alfalfa breeders, but nobody gets excited when you show up at a party with a crate full of alfalfa. People get excited about strawberries; they elicit a very spontaneous, posi tive reaction.
Q: What do you enjoy about being a strawberry scientist?
A: I kind of stumbled into it. I had a BA in biology and no real plans. I ran into a mother’s cous in’s husband at a family gathering who was working at Cornell’s enology (wine-science) program. I hadn’t heard of plant breeding before that, but I loved the way it brought together so many fields of science – genetics, horticulture, sensory science, chemistry. Greenlaw also had an earlier 15-yard penalty when he hit Fields late along the sideline – it was a marginal call that looked worse in real time than it did in slow motion – but Bosa said the 49ers should have known“Webetter.knew he was going to slide at the last second,” Bosa said. “It’s 15 yards for a team that can’t move the ball and it’s huge. We’ve got to be Thesmarter.”Bears had 68 yards on 30 snaps in the first half and 136 yards on 26 snaps in the second. Bosa con ceded that both the weather and Fields’ ability to escape were a challenge.“Wedefinitely rushed him well in the first half, just kind of bull-rushed and not with any moves because he’s going to run, so it’s not the most fun,” Bosa said. “But it’s the way to beat him, and we didn’t do it in the second half, so that’s whatFields, happens.”who was 3 of 9 for 19 yards, an interception and a microscopic 2.8 passer rating in the first half, was 5 of 8 for 102 yards and two touchdowns in the second. Fields is a legitimate prospect, no doubt, but consider ing his supporting cast, he should have contin ued to be fresh meat for a 49ers defense through the second half.
“Cobra Kai” helped reenergize interest, not only by putting a spotlight back on the visually-astound ing physical elements but also by exploring the philosophical complexi ties like its “Karate Kid” predecessor.“[Theshow] is still talking about all the great stuff that martial arts can do, but they’re doing it in a modern way,” Azhakh said. “The honor, the bowing, the respect, wishing good upon your opponent, sportsman ship – things like ‘Cobra Kai’ push that back. That, ‘Hey, it’s important to kick ass, but you still got to be a nice person.’”
On fourth-quarter rain’s“Theimpact:fourth quarter for sure was the tough est. We had so many opportunities, I had so many opportunities to make plays to run away with it far before that, where that two-min ute drill wouldn’t have been a factor.”
Exactly who was responsible for the breakdowns Shanahan wasn’t saying, but the 49ers are playing without deep safety Jimmie Ward, on injured reserve with a hamstring strain.
“I would say karate is the best sport to be telling the personal and philo sophical lessons we’re exploring on the show,” Heald said. “It teaches you all of those wonder ful lessons of balance and respect and confi dence, things that are so important to lead to well-roundedness when you’re a teenager or preteen and you’re coming into your own.”
On weather’s impact: “When it’s raining that hard, you can’t really do much, passrush wise. But it was better grass, too.”
“It has a ‘Rudy’-like quality to it,” Heald said. “If you apply yourself to this, and you practice and fight in a smart way, you can outwit an opponent and be successful with being of larger size. I think that’s what’s immediately accessible about it.”

The sport’s prominence declined in Hollywood productions. The once robust market of karate magazines and martial arts publications – such as one Matsuda used to publish – had nearly dis appeared. And in places like the Valley, the vast network of neighborhood karate schools that used to seemingly populate almost every street corner and strip mall began to slowly“It’sdisappear.nothinglike it used to be,” Matsuda said. “In my school, they had so many people I had to prac tice in the parking lot. No film had a greater impact than “The Karate Kid” in 1984, a block buster hit set in the Valley that offered a relatively realistic representation of karate’s real-world application.“Itkind of let people know [karate] was some thing they were capable of,” said Bob White, who was an adviser on the film and runs a karate school in OrangeAddedCounty.Azhakh: “Our business just blew up.
