As CEO of the Solano Economic Development Corporation, I talk to employers all the time who are think ing about relocating to the Fairfield area. When considering where to bring their good jobs and economic activity, what are they looking for? The answer I hear again and again: goodWhy?schools.Good local schools are attractive to employers for a couple of important reasons. First, locating to an area with good schools means employers have access to the skilled and educated workers they rely upon. Increasingly they are looking for graduates with a strong foundation in science, technology, engineer ing and math. Second, good local schools make for desirable commu nities where employers will have success attracting and retaining quality employees.

We won’t know how the state as a whole fared until – and unless – the Department of Education finally releases 2022 complete “Smarter Balance” test results. But there’s no reason to believe that what happened – or, more accurately, what didn’t happen – in Los Angeles isn’t also true of other systems, particularly those with large numbers of at-risk students.

With schools closed, local administrators scrambled to provide online classes, what became known as “Zoom school,” but they were poor substitutes for the real thing –especially for English-learner students and those from poorThosefamilies.children – roughly 60% of the state’s nearly 6 million public school students – were already trailing their more priv ileged contemporaries academically when the pandemic hit. The closures made it worse, for obvious reasons.
Affluent parents, particularly those who could easily work from home during the pan demic, made certain their children attended online classes, helped them with their school work, formed informal collaboration groups and/or hired tutors. Thus, the ill effects of clo sures were mitigated. And, of course, private schools, such as the one Gov. Gavin Newsom’s children attend, either remained open or mini mized closures.

While the state Department of Education has not released 2022 academic test data that would allow comparisons with pre-pandemic results, individual school districts are doing so and the numbers from the state’s largest school dis trict, Los Angeles Unified, are stunning. About 72% of the district’s students are not meeting state standards in math and 58% are behind in English, essentially wiping out five years of progress the district had recorded prior to the“Thepandemic.pandemic deeply impacted the perfor mance of our students,” Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carv alho said. “Particularly kids who were at risk, in a fragile condition, prior to the pandemic, as we expected, were the ones who have lost the mostWhileground.”thedistrict released gross data, it did not break down the test results by ethnic or economic subgroups. The Los Angeles Times, however, gleaned the detail from a school board document marked “not for public release.”
The educational deprivation that Califor nia inflicted on its children is not only shameful, but will reverberate for decades. Children who fail to master the basics of education in lower grades will be ill-prepared for high school and post-high school training and education. If they are not prepared to take their place in the work force, the state’s economy will suffer.

This past Sunday (Sept. 11) the Daily Republic commemo rated the losses of life in 9/11 by thoughtful articles. Eulogies were given for the many who sacrificed their lives for the sal vation of others.

On a 5-4 vote, the justices said the religious school for now should comply with a New York state trial court ruling that, as a public accommodation, Yeshiva was covered under the New York City Human Rights Law and required to provide the Pride Alliance the same access to facilities as dozens of other student groups. The group said that includes a classroom, bulle tin boards and a club fair booth.
Now, for believing and discerning souls, there is a dramatic corollary of eternal proportions. As Christians and believers we have even greater stakes with mandates as “firemen for the Lord.”

Four justices dissented, saying Yeshiva’s response to the student group was the result of “an interpretation of Torah . . . after careful study.”

49ers await challenge of Seahawks, elements
The biggest issue with the 49ers is at quarter back, where Trey Lance is trying to get his footing and Jimmy Garoppolo is lurking over his shoulder. It would bleed off a lot of pressure Sunday if Lance were to pick up a victory.
Kyle Shanahan’s offense is predicated on a strong ground game, and that could be an issue for San Francisco, which lost top running back Elijah Mitchell in the opener. It was a flashback to last season when San Francisco lost Raheem Mostert in Week 1 against Detroit.
