The California condors’ vast wingspan helps them soar up to 15,000 feet without flapping for long periods. They can cover up to 150 miles in a day to search for food and soar up to 50 miles per hour.
The Yurok Tribe and government partners drafted a plan to release condors into Redwood National Park. The tow ering old-growth coastal redwoods provided ample space for them to nest and rest, while the birds could forage in vast open prairies. Consis tent winds also help the birds glide for extended periods of time and reduce energy spent flap ping their large wings.
Now, the opposite of how cool that feels is what kept happening when I was the emcee at the first Fairfield cancer charity fundraiser Pink Fest in 2013. The stage manager would tell me the band was ready and I would do my intro all loud and proud and then . . . nothing. They band would still be tuning up.
The Yurok, who char acterize the condors by their kind heartedness and sense to renew the Earth, also gave each bird a Yurok name at the time of release: Hlow Hoo-let (translated to “at last I or we fly!”), Ney-gem’ ‘Nechween-kah (“she carries our prayers”), Poy’-weson (“the one who goes out ahead”) and Nes-kwechokw’ (“he returns”).
A3 inched his way to the open gate and then pushed off, like a child diving into the deep end for the first time. A2 was a little more hesitant, standing at the open gate for a few seconds before following his compan ion in flight.
Finally, the time came to release the first two condors into the wild.

A California condor (Gymnogyps califor nianus) sounds almost mythical: A bird larger than any person. Teeth that can rip through whale flesh. Yet a gentle conservator that does not kill, but rather feeds on animals that are already dead.
As the condors took their first flight among the redwood trees, hun dreds of people logged on to the Yurok Tribe’s live stream of the release. Yurok tribe members, friends from Ventana Wildlife Society and zoos as well as bird nerds from near and far rejoiced as the first condors entered Northern California in more than a century.
As of July, all four condors in the first cohort were reintroduced back into the wild in Redwood National Park. Four more condors have entered the pens, waiting for their time to take off and join their friends. The Yurok Condor Restoration Program plans to release four to six birds per year for the next 20 years.

In the 1800s, Cali fornia condors were the heartbeat of the region, soaring higher than any bird – but humans pushed the condors to the brink of extinc tion. Now, the Northern California Condor Res toration Program, the native Yurok Tribe and government agen cies have introduced a program to blend the species back into the natural landscape of the Pacific Northwest over the next two decades.
But here’s the thing: I am terrible with names and even though I may know someone, the lil’ old dude who retrieves those files in my head uses a card catalog and not a search engine. This was part of the intro for local Beatles tribute band Hey Jude:

I was the emcee for the stage at the intersection of Madison and Texas streets as well as the one on Webster and Texas streets. My vendor booth was right in front of the Webster Street stage and navigating between that one and the other one two blocks away was a challenge. The bands were stag gered by 15 minutes, but it was very rare for one band to be able to remove their gear, the next band load theirs and then have a soundcheck and then start on time. It was catch-as-catchcan when I tried to be there for each group and just did the best I Montecould.“Voice of the Fairfield Fourth of July Parade” Hoover used to do it before me and he would ride his bicycle between the two. Well, I don’t have a bike or rollerblades or a skate board. Actually, what would work best would be a jet pack or transporter. After winning trick one or two with the spade ace, he led a heart to his ace and cashed his three top clubs, ending on the board. As the suit did break 3-3, South crossed to hand in a red suit and cashed the club seven for his contract.

Dear Annie: We’re in a bit of a crisis here. My daugh ter has gone through a messy divorce. Her ex-husband took her to court for custody of their two younger children, calling her neglectful and unfit, as well as seeking to reduce support pay ments, to name a few charges. She won the case, but now he is appealing.Hehaspractically unlim ited funds, making over $400,000 per year, while she makesThis$70,000.hasalready cost her tens of thousands of dollars in attorney fees. Dear Concerned Mother: It sounds like the crisis is not just legal. The ex-husband appears to be using the divorce to wreak psy chological havoc on his ex-wife and, sadly, his own children. It is important that her attor ney point this out to the court and make sure he is paying all support pay ments during his appeals. If your attorney can show that the ex-husband is not paying child support and any other require ments from the court ruling, your daughter can ask for her ex to be forced to pay her attorney fees.

Dear Shy: The best way to express your gratitude is to be honest with your friends. Tell them how much this sit uation has meant to you and how grateful you are. But also tell them exactly what you told me – that you don’t like to be the center of attention. Allow them to have a party with all their friends, but maybe ask that it not be FOR you but rather just a party to celebrate life and your friendship. It sounds like you have a wonderful friendship, which is such a blessing in life. Best of luck on the next chapter of your life with your husband.
I would be interested in hearing suggestions from readers who are divorce attor neys or who have gone through a divorce and can offer insights. I am sorry that your daughter and grandchildren are going through this.

The bill focuses on physicians accused of disseminating misinfor mation to patients under their care. (It does not extend to comments in the public domain, such as social media.) On a surface level, this is defensible: The expectation should be that doctors always abide by the gold standard of care. Therefore, those who deliberately give patients advice that counters established guidelines should lose their medical license.
With 70 years of data, the biggest factor influencing the weather and climate changes of Earth is not caused by cars and buses, which do contrib ute 10.8% of the total CO2 emission increase (0.15 parts per million per year). The sun and Earth’s variation of orientation and distance from each other are the major drivers.
ne of the many lessons from the Covid-19 pan demic is that misinfor mation can be deadly. It can lead people to forgo life saving precautions and turn instead to potentially harmful therapies. If it’s egregious for politicians and celebri ties to purvey misinforma tion, it’s far worse when the lie peddler is a physician. Surely, such an individual would be in vio lation of their oath and should be stripped of their medical license.

Look carefully at the recent accomplish ments under President Joe Biden. He’s doing stuff for “us,” not for “them,” for the first time in a long time.
George W. Bush, a clearly failed president by 2004, won re-election as Midwesterners flocked to the conservative culture war side.
Let’s see what happens when the dog catches the Social Security and Medicare cars. The majority seems to like those programs. Let Republicans dump them and see the triumphal parades blaring loudly that we’ve been liberated from those government oppressions.

Astrophysicist Milutin Milankov itch developed a climate theory that is accepted by the National Research Council of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (https://earthobservatory. nasa.gov) that states, “. . . Orbital variations remain the most thor oughly examined mechanism of climate change on time scales of tens of thousands of years and are by far the clearest case of insolation of the lower atmosphere of Earth.”

Earth’s orbit is an eccentric oval shape. When Earth’s orbit is most elliptical, about 23% more incom ing solar radiation reaches Earth at its closest approach to the sun (peri helion) than at its farthest distance from the sun. At perihelion, Earth is 5.1 million kilometers closer to the sun. Earth’s obliquity (changes of axial tilt) and rotational orienta tion also effect climate perihelion changes. Earth’s seasons become much more extreme at higher tilts, and considerably milder at lower tilts.
would have ignored his advice and obtained it anyway from a livestock shop, where the dosages intended for cows and horses could be deadly to humans. This action certainly devi ated from what the California bill calls “contemporary scientific con sensus,” but that physician shouldn’t have to fear for his license because he tried to reduce harm to his patients.
Global warming is real. So are greenhouse gases and deforestation.
That’s the thinking behind Assem bly Bill 2098, a bill that passed the California Legislature and is waiting to be signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom. The measure would make California the first state that could take legal action against health care professionals for conveying false information about Covid-19 and its treatments.Whilewell-intentioned, this leg islation will have a chilling effect on medical practice, with widespread repercussions that could paradoxi cally worsen patient care.
Will Republican candidates thunder today about how homosexuality threatens standard marriage and the average family? Or any of the other illogical barkings we heard? Today the country has gotten thoroughly used to it.
But times change. So Democrats are now circulating the Respect For Marriage Act in Congress. Why not? Some 70% of Americans now believe in marriage equality.

The problem is that medical prac tice is rarely black and white. Much of the time, broad recommendations are intended to be tailored to the indi vidualTakepatient.therecent guidelines on booster shots. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that everyone 12 and older receive updated boosters. Most doctors would probably agree that elderly individuals should get the new booster right away. But many might advise – as I would – that it’s fine for some patients to hold off and time the

It wasn’t so long ago that same-sex marriage shocked most of us. In 2004, Karl Rove – that evil genius – put gay marriage initiatives on many state ballots in the Midwest. It worked.
Next, take economics. I have a good friend who is super conservative. At least a decade ago he barked to me that Social Security had to go. He was serious; I was shocked. I told him the party that abolished Social Security would become a minority party for the next half-century.NowSen.Rick Scott, head of the Republi can Senatorial Committee, wants to be able to reauthorize Social Security and Medicare every five years in Congress. he GOP, after years of agitation and hard work, has gotten rid of Roe v. Wade.
Many Republican officeholders are purging their websites of their enthusi asm for ending Roe. There’s no triumphal bragging at all.
The majority of Americans have been taking an economic shellacking under the Republicans.
But the majority didn’t embrace it. Now the GOP, which had for decades used such culture war topics, are finding themselves on the defen sive. The dog caught the culture war car.

In a way, though the California bill was introduced by Democratic leg islators, it is not unlike the Trump administration’s Title X “gag rule,” which barred health care providers who worked in clinics that received federal funding from referring patients for abortion care. I strongly opposed the Title X gag rule for the same reason I oppose AB 2098: Both censor what doctors can say to our patients. Both represent polit ical interference with the practice of medicine.Bothmeasures could also set a precedent with downstream reper cussions. Imagine if anti-vaccine legislators introduced a bill that forbids pediatricians from offering parents information on routine child hood immunizations. Imagine if states that already limit reproductive health services or transgender care prohibit health care providers from discussing options with their patients.

Here’s another liberal economic car the Republicans have been barking at and chasing –“Obamacare.” After at least 70 attempts to alter or end it, Republicans came within one vote of trashing the program under Donald Trump.
State’s anti-misinformation bill a bad idea
NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Alan Buis in “Milankovitch Orbital Cycles and Their Role in Earth’s Climate” (https://climate.nasa.gov) states: “The Milankovitch cycles cause variations of up to 25% in the amount of incoming solar radiation at Earth’s mid-latitudes. . . . A study in the Journal of Science by Hays et al using deep-sea sediment cores found that the Milankovitch cycles correspond with periods of major climate change over the past 450,000 years, with ice ages occurring when Earth was undergoing different stages of orbital variation. Research using data from ice cores in Greenland and Antarctica provided strong evidence of Mila nkovitch cycles going back for many hundreds of thousands of years.”

There was always a major ity of people who wanted to retain abortion in some cases.
Is California going to build three Diablo Canyons to provide the electric power to charge 31 million zero emis sion cars? Well worth it at $42 billion.
California’s bill is a recipe for medical practice to be subject to the whims of partisan politics. And it challenges the basis of the doctorpatient relationship. At a time of deep division, when trust in health officials has already been eroded, bills that threaten doctors should be reconsid ered before unintended consequences create far more problems than the legislation tries to solve.
The dog has finally caught the car
I would like to see what the effect is when 20 million to 36 million low-income Americans are cast out of health insurance. The Affordable Care Act was just ever so oppressive. It is paid for by 16 taxes on the wealthy. That’s who was “oppressed,” not “us.”

What we’re looking at is an unveiling of a giant, conservative scheme. The Republicans have catered to small but powerful minorities. These minorities have cleverly portrayed their peeves as “our” peeves using the cover of fear of cultural change. Using culture-war issues, they have been attacking political and economic pro grams that help “us.”

Take a political example. Will the Supreme Court “look at” the truly radical claim that after an election, a state legislature can over turn a popular winner and choose someone else? It’s called the “independent state legislature” theory, beloved of a tiny, nutty conserva tiveThere’sminority.asinister part of me that says, “Go ahead.” Let’s see what happens when, say, a Democratic candidate for Congress wins 60% of a state’s vote and the Republican state legisla ture refuses to certify the election and instead chooses a Republican, nullifying millions of Democratic ballots.
But a radical minority had long taken over the GOP, silencing any exponents of accommoda tion. The GOP had surrendered to radical conservative religious minorities who used words like “murder,” “slaughter” and even “genocide.”

A bill on Gov. The legislation is needed, she said, because Cal ifornia has among the strictest requirements for food safety and climate standards, and the state’s wage and benefits regula tions drive up labor costs.

In a new wrinkle, the availability of the flu vaccine this year coin cides with the majority of Americans becoming eli gible for the new Covid booster shot. Experts say it’s reasonable –though not necessary – to get a flu shot and Covid booster at the same time for the sake of conve nience and efficiency. For most people, getting the flu shot around the end of Sep tember or in October is ideal – generally by November is best, experts say. Newscasters changed into allblackSuddenly, outfits. comedy didn’t seem to fit the national mood. The BBC dropped scheduled comedic programming in favor of somber specials memorializ ing the queen. And throughout the country, venues canceled planned comedy nights – often to the chagrin of working come dians who rely on gig money to pay their bills.

“People can choose whether or not they want to come. The onus should be on them, not promoters, to decide,” she told the Post-Gazette. Other wise, she said, it’s oddly like “forcedAftermourning.”all,a nationwide “period of mourning” implies that everyone in the nation is in mourning – but that’s simply not true. Haddow has found that, for all the messages of grief online and in venues’ windows, comedy fans are sur prisingly ready to laugh at the wholeWhenthing.asked if she feels com fortable making jokes about what’s happening in the U.K., she said she has, and that “people are loving it.” (“I mean they’ve loved it at my gigs,” she clarified – every audience is different.)Inaway, Ms. Haddow’s sen timent is just one form of the age-old entertainer’s mantra: The show must go on.
For instance: The BBC pushed back the debut date of a comedy series indefinitely. It also pushed back the airtime for a taped stand-up special. The comedy news shows “Mock the Week” and “Have I Got News
A post from London club Up The Creek exemplified the uncertainty: “Please keep an eye on our socials & emails for any changes to our schedule over the coming weeks as more guidance emerges.” (Later, when it became clear that the comedy cancellations were only mandatory on the BBC,

“£350 potentially lost because of two jobs being post poned. Cool. God Save The King and my bills I guess,” wrote London comedian Alexandra Haddow, on Twitter.

And then there was the story of the comedian Mark Watson.
As Brits in the comedy world navigate this once-in-a-life time moment of ritualized grief, they’re having to consider: Is it okay to laugh? And will audi ences laugh, too?

Chortle ran an article with the clarifying title: “Comedy isn’t cancelled.”)Still, promoters and venues have been choosing to cancel comedy nights out of respect for the late queen. In Central London in particular, some of the city’s biggest venues have cut programming for Sept. 19, the day of Queen Eliza beth’sLaterfuneral.inthe week, Haddow was still waiting to hear back about the gig’s reschedul ing. The matter was out of her hands, which was frustrat ing – it was a promoter who’d decided to cancel, not her.
Watson was on tour in the town of Kettering, in Northamp tonshire, when he heard the news. He had a sold-out show booked at the Kettering Arts Centre that night (“If you’ve seen the venue, that’s not as big a claim as it sounds,” he joked later, to audience laughter). When news broke, the center canceled the show, as it also was a church that would need to serve as a place of consolation for the Insteadgrieving.of

Before the events of last week, Bennett’s job con sisted mostly of covering the ample goings-on of lively U.K. comedy scenes. This week, he’s reported far more on postpone ments and cancellations.

“It’s odd here at the moment because so much comedy has been put on hold,” said Steve Bennett, the editor of Chortle, a comedy news site in the U.K.
During the nationwide period of mourning, standup comedy is still permitted, but it wasn’t clear at first if it would be. The BBC’s wide spread cancellations of comedy programming led some to spec ulate that comedy writ large would be disallowed.

At the table, South cashed the spade ace at trick five. West’s discard resulted in much wailing but – surprisingly – no reproachful grief from South. What did he overlook?Eastwasknown to have started with a singleton diamond and only four clubs. To have opened one club, not one of a major, he must have begun with 4=4=1=4 distribution. Therefore, West had to have a spade void. South should have cashed the heart ace, ruffed a heart in the dummy and led a low spade, finessing the 10 if East played low.It is important not to ignore any of the clues that are scattered about the bridge table like leaves in the approaching UNITED FEATURE SYNDICATE
In times of national crisis, comedians can play an impor tant role. They did in the U.S. after Sept. 11, and they did in London as well during the mass atrocities of World War II. Of course, those were mass casu alty tragedies – far different from the orderly funeral rites proceeding in London lately. But the nationwide “period of mourning” also is unique in its formalized nature – a govern ment-issued proclamation that the nation must now honoring its late queen.

leaving town, Watson posted on Twitter that fans could meet him outside, where he’d perform a set in a public square instead: “Venue’s decision, rather than mine. I respect it, but it’s disappoint ing, and I already have my train tickets. So I’ll be outside the venue at 7.30 for a (free) unof ficial gig.” He ended up doing a 90-minute set.

In their Facebook post, it was hard to tell whether Down stairs at the King’s Head was entirely serious – but they’re a comedy venue, so it’s likely safe to assume the following was written with a wink: “Eliz abeth II. Sad News. RIP. We have decided to celebrate her life with communal fun and laughter, so all shows are going ahead. She was a fun woman. Hopefully, see you there. God Save The King!”
Can you see the clue that South missed in today’s deal? Against South’s four-spade contract, the play began with a club to the ace, a diamond to the ace, a diamond ruffed by East and a club return. How should South have continued?West’sthree-diamond response was a weak jump shift in competition, a method that is popular in tournament circles. Normally, the bid shows a good six-card suit but not enough points for a normal response. (I much prefer fit-showing jumps in competition because I dislike leaping into the stratosphere with no known fit.)
