The so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, as well as Kherson, may hold their votes as soon as this weekend, Interfax quoted officials as saying Tuesday. Ukraine and its allies have denounced the referendums as illegal and few countries are likely to recognize the results. Russian-backed officials in Zaporizhzhia, where they don’t hold even the regional capital, still vowed to move quickly toward a vote.

My sister has a big birthday this week. I’d tell you how big, but if she knew, she’d kill me and refuse to go to my funeral.

Cousin Sara and her husband Dennis (I call him Bear Man but that’s another story) will host a party for Bobbie, who will be thrilled to see us all, as long as the food is good. (Bobbie’s a mite picky.) I’m sure the food will be good, and plentiful.

We are, for now, the last of our Family Reserve. Fewer in number. Scattered apart. But our children and grandchildren and all the children yet to come will one day take our place and be our family forever. This week we will gather once more to remember loved ones who are gone, but not forgot ten, and to celebrate the birthday of our matriarch, my sister Bobbie.

my husband and I lived in Las Vegas, I flew once or twice a month to speak at events or visit our children.

For example, some rural districts in Texas have gone to four day weeks in order to attract teacher can didates. Florida recently passed a law that allows veterans with at least 60 hours of college course work to teach. Arizona passed emergency legis lation allowing college students to teach. There are many variations.

The women would gossip in the kitchen. The men would smoke and joke on the porch. And the girl cousins would watch the boy cousins try to kill each other with sticks.

Once, as Sara and I planned food for a crowd, I said, “Do you think we’ll have“Don’tenough?”worry, honey,” Sara said. “If we run short, we’ll just put out a few funeral home signs

It’s been more than two years since I boarded a plane, and almost four years since I’ve seen the mountains where I was born, or hugged the necks of folks in a big-hearted family that, despite how I turned out, tried to raise me right.

We had no grand children when we moved there. Then they started coming out of the woodwork. Nine grand babies in 10 years. So we moved back to Cali fornia to be closer to our growing family. Then the pandemic hit and life changed in ways we never imagined.

The bottom line is that shortages do exist, but they vary by region, demographic characteristics, dis trict dynamics, grade levels and subject matter (special education, math and science teachers remain in high demand nationwide).

Fabiola Cineas (VOX Magazine) explains that teacher shortages in one form or another have existed for the past 50 years. What is dif ferent today is “how little America values its teachers.” Many teachers suffer from a widespread crisis of morale and confidence.

I hope Bobbie likes the food.

A good time will be had by one and all, by our Family Reserve and countless others smiling down on us from above.

We were a family, certain we always would be. Then life took its toll. Some of us moved to foreign lands like Califor nia of All Places. In time, we lost our grandpar ents and parents, aunts and uncles, even some cousins. Many of them lie buried side by side on a lovely hill with a view of the BI-LO parking lot.

This gathering won’t be nearly as big as some we’ve shared in years past. Our grandparents had 10 children (nine talk ative girls and one quiet boy) and more grand children than they could count. Report ers Sharon Lurye from AP News and Michael Antonucci from The 74 report there is little evidence to suggest teacher turnover has increased nationwide. They point out that federal pandemic relief funds provided a huge shot in the arm to districts that literally had to close up shop and lay off teachers during the pandemic. Many dis tricts found themselves flush with relief money and not only main tained existing staffing ratios but created new teaching positions (beyond pre-pandemic levels).

It brings to mind a beautiful song by Lyle Lovett that recalls members of his family who are gone, but not for gotten, and describes those still living as the last of the “Family Reserve.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the total number of employees in American public schools dropped from almost 8.1 million in March 2020 to 7.3 million in May 2020. A recent survey by the Amer ican Federation of Teachers revealed that 75% of respondents (nationwide) reported that teach ing conditions have changed for the worse over the past five years. According to Dirck Roo sevelt (Columbia University), increased state mandates, topdown oversight, culture wars, loss of professional autonomy and the politicization of education are driving people from the profession.

Madeline Will (EDWeek) reported that enrollment has declined by 35% in recent years. Consequently, the pipeline of newly minted teach ers is drying up. Moreover, nearly 50% of new teachers leave the pro fession within the first five years.

Dear Annie: The neighbor who is annoyed by a politi cal yard sign – displayed in a yard two months after an elec tion – can report this to their city zoning department. Look up the city code on the internet and check for yourself: Political and other signs are regulated in residential areas, and there is a time frame for before and after an election for them to be displayed legally. Most likely, someone from the city will knock on the door and ask for it to be removed. This has nothing to do with the candidate on the sign, by the way.

as quickly as Castillo’s career. And while the global appeal of the National Football League has helped fuel flag football’s rise in Panama and elsewhere, about the only thing the two sports share is the shape of the ball.

Flag football is typically played with five people on a side on a field about two-thirds the size of an NFL gridiron, which makes for a wide-open game played at a break neck pace. That also makes speed, agility and creativity more impor tant than size or brute strength, a reason women and girls are flock ing to the game in huge numbers.

The nation has some of the highest homicide and gun violence rates in Europe. Swedish journalist Paulina Neuding has chronicled this sea change for many years, mostly caused by drug gangs. In this fight, the conflicting claims about Proposition 27 have rubbed off on 26 and created confusion about it. Voters are turned off by both measures. They also must realize that more gambling –particularly online – would mean more gambling

It would codify the DREAM ers, people brought here as infants, some who’ve served in the military and gone to college and know only the U.S. as their home. It would have a guest worker program giving people a defined time for them to legally work in the states that would also work toward citizenship.

It is important to note the under standable concerns that the Sweden Democrats are anti-democratic, but the truth is these are largely overblown. The party has grown massively since the days when it was a tiny fringe dom inated by neo-Nazis – two decades ago. Leader Jimmie Akesson says he has purged the party of its racist and fascist elements, and most Sweden Demo crat supporters today are frustrated people who want change. Their chal lenge is to prove to the rest of Sweden that their party has moved on from its uglySweden’shistory.

Another reason for Proposition 27’s failure, I suspect, is its barrage of disin genuous TV ads. They imply that 27 is the solution to homelessness. That’s because 85% of their tax would be ear marked for homelessness programs.

In fact, Proposition 26 is seen by some as a savior of thorough bred racing in California.

This shift among working-class voters occurred nationwide, over whelming the left despite its gains in the cities and suburbs. Exit polls show that the Sweden Democrats received almost as many working-class votes as the Social Democrats, the traditional Swedish working-class party. Just as in Britain and the United States, eco nomic stagnation and cultural issues are causing the working class to move to the populist right.

Voters are fed up with the ad bom bardment and confused, I figure.

“If you’re a sports fan who wants to bet on games, that’s what you need to hear as opposed to a lot of other things,” Baldassare

Andmentioned.withProposition 26 not even pro moting itself, why should voters buy into it? Proposition 27 has always been a lousy bet. They’re both losers.

We should pass bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform. What does that look like? It would have an enforce ment component: Hiring 20,000 border patrol agents, stepped up deportation of crim

Immigration and crime are espe cially powerful issues with these voters, and sure enough that proved true in Sweden.

The country took in more asylum seekers per capita than any other country in the European Union during the mid-2010s migrant crisis, and many of those came from Muslim-major ity nations with very different cultures from Sweden’s. The decision to allow in so many refugees destroyed the gov ernment led by Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt of the Moderate Party in 2014. Governments since, led by Swe den’s Social Democratic Party, have failed to control the ramifications of this surge of immigration, resulting in the toppling last week of Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson. Crime has also become a real issue in Sweden.

But that amount – up to $425 million a year, based on legislative analyst data –isn’t much compared with what the state already is spending: $7.6 billion this

One big reason both measures are losing is that Proposition 26’s main backers, tribes, fear the approval of online sports betting more than they desire in-person sports wagering in their casinos. Their top priority is the defeat of Proposition 27. So, they haven’t been promoting their own measure. No wonder it hasn’t generated broad support. Virtually all their effort and money has gone into pummeling 27.

Henry Olsen is a Washington Post col umnist and a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center.

Norrbotten County is a perfect example. This far-northern province is a historic bastion of the left, dominated by working-class miners. Social Dem ocrats and the former Communist Left Party typically took close to 70% of the vote there in the mid-1990s. In 2018, these parties plus the center-left Greens won 62%. This year, however, the left parties won only 57.5% of the county, and the Sweden Democrats soared to more than 20%.

Sports betting, which is illegal in California except for horse racing, would also bring more gamblers into tribal casinos. And casino gambling would be upgraded by permitting rou lette and craps. They’re now forbidden in theBettorsstate.would need to be at least 21. Betting on high school or college games would still be illegal. There’d be a 10% state tax on sports-wagering profits at the tracks. The casinos have committed to paying the state 15%.

We’d need to provide a pathway to citizenship for longterm undocumented residents. That would come with strings such as a fine or back taxes and a longer glide path than someone who didn’t enter the country

Tribes currently have a monopoly on casino gambling in California. Voters gave it to them. They feel that’s threat ened by Proposition 27, sponsored mainly by out-of-state online interests, including FanDuel and DraftKings.

It would allow sports betting on professional games – football, etc. – at tribal casinos and four horse racetracks: Santa Anita, Del Mar, Los Alamitos and Golden Gate.

This fact cannot be ignored by any party that wants to govern Sweden –and by extension many other Western countries. Establishment center-left and center-right parties have tried demonizing or excluding national pop ulists from power for years. Nothing has dented their rise. National popu lism will stop growing only when the concerns of its supporters are seri ously addressed.

You can also bet on horse races at home – the one sport California OKs for online wagering. An estimated 60% of horse race bets are placed online, Fenton says. Around 30% are made at 23 simulcast facilities. Just 10% are wagered at Racing’stracks.efforts to bring more people to the tracks weren’t helped by imagedamaging thoroughbred fatalities in 2019. I don’t have the answers to everything that should be in that bill. Why don’t we at least put together a bipartisan com mission to study the issue and lead to a bill? Politicians on both sides of the aisle love to dem agogue the issue, raise money off of it and do nothing. Solving this problem is another job we Americans don’t want to do but we must. Peace.

But while urban, prosperous Sweden didn’t want to change, the rest of the country certainly did.

A center-right coalition in Sweden narrowly secured victory last Wednesday, anchored by a national populist party called the Sweden Democrats. This has unnerved many in the West, but it shouldn’t. It’s simply yet another example of how the refusal of elites to deal with the legitimate concerns of voters is fueling populist backlash. National populism, a term coined by British political scientists Roger Eatwell and Matthew Goodwin, is today found in virtually every Western nation. Its adherents tend to come from similar social classes – disproportionally mid dle-aged workers without high levels of formal education. They tilt male but include large numbers of demographi cally similar women. They swing to the left on economics, supporting strong welfare states, and to the right on culture. They are fearful of social and economic change that affects their stan dard of living and social status, and they organize to resist that change.

Californians seem content with the gambling that exists. There are 66 tribal casinos, 84 card rooms, 29 fairs with racetracks and 23,000 stores selling lottery tickets.

Or you’ve suffered through slow service due to the establishment being understaffed. With a public anxious to go out after a pandemic, people quitting service jobs over low play and terrible treatment and an unemployment rate of 3.7%, what are employers to do?

The goal is to attract more bettors to the tracks, where attendance has slumped in recent years.

Only recently, on major game tele casts, has the 27 side been telling viewers what the proposition really does: allow fans to bet on their teams without leaving the couch.

Sweden’s populists have surged to power

Coincidentally, we have record numbers of people on our southern border who’d like to come to the U.S. to work. Tons of job openings. Tons of undocumented immigrants. Hmmm. A smart country would seize the opportunity.

Yet Brodner, 67, says much of his half-century-long career has involved imbuing his art with his pointed outlook. So, increasingly, he drew other voices and news stories that also reflected the pandemic era, particularly as he realized that the U.S. Covid response exposed ways in which “we are not all in this together.”

That approach heightens his sense of artistic sympathy. In his studio or at his dining room table late at night, he would become overwhelmed with sadness: “I would sit and feel the loss.” He didn’t know any of the victims he rendered, yet he felt such a strong emo tional bond that he would weep. (Brodner, who is vaccinated and boosted, notes that neither he nor his acupuncturist wife has contracted Covid.)

To slow down your play, consider sitting on your hand!

Steve Brodner sat in his Upper West Side art studio in the spring of 2020, absorb ing the obituaries as the whir and cry of dead-of-night ambulances broke the city’s disquieting silence. It was all moving too fast.

So Brodner, an illustra tor and political caricaturist, carried out one personal act each day. He would pick up his pen and brush to spotlight a prominent aspect of the coro navirus pandemic from the current news cycle – one face or event at a time.

As Brodner chose whom to spotlight, he was particularly affected by the loss of a nurse, a cancer-surviving boxing coach, musicians and Nick Cordero, the Broadway actor who died in the summer of 2020, at age 41.

Yesterday’s solution: 9/22/22

Leo Sorel/The Washington Post Chronicling the pandemic through art was “a day-to-day reaction,” says Steve Brodner, pictured in his New York studio. Nearly two years of illustrations are collected in his new book, “Living & Dying in America.”

Day after day, name after name, he couldn’t shake the sense that Covid-19 victims were dying in waves too great for them to be properly appre ciated. As the lockdown lasted, he thought: “We’re losing these people and they’re really important, even though we’ve never heard of most of them.”

East, knowing his partner had led a singleton, returned the spade two at trick two – a suit-preference signal for clubs. West ruffed and switched to a club. Declarer won in the dummy and played a trump. East put up his ace and led another spade, but declarer ruffed high, drew East’s last heart and claimed.Eastwas unrealistic in expecting West to be able to overruff South on the third round of spades. South had to have all of the missing 21 points as East could see the four jacks. East should have considered his target. Four tricks were needed, not three. East must organize a club ruff before giving West his spade ruff. At trick two, East should shift to the club seven. Declarer will win in the dummy and play a heart, but East wins that with the ace and leads the spade two. West ruffs and, reading East’s card as a suit-preference signal, returns a club. East’s ruff defeats the contract.

“There are a lot of jobs tied to the port, clearly, but the impact on the pollution side is real,” Garcia said in an inter view at Bloomberg’s Los Angeles bureau. “They want to know when we talk about ports growing – when we talk about Long Beach – that it has to grow in a way that’s headed toward zero-emis sionGarciagrowth.”said efforts are underway to cut emis sions from the thousands
