Just another midterm election? Or does a November surprise await? Tribune Content Agency In one sense, the fundamentals of this election season have remained remarkably consistent. President Joe Biden’s approval ratings languish in the low 40s. High inflation stubbornly persists. And odds have stayed stacked against the sitting president’s party. In another sense, nothing about this moment feels predict-

able. The cycle has been bookended by two acts of political violence – the Jan. 6, 2021, siege of the U.S. Capitol and the assault on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband – that underscore the country’s jittery mood. The Supreme Court reversed nationwide protections for abortion rights that had remained in place for nearly 50 years. A See Election, Page A8

FAIRFIELD — Author Melissa Larsen remembers her first book, “The Ghost’s Dinner,” as being terrifying. “The characters turn into the textures of what they eat at this dinner party,” she said. “That scared me. I guess you probably could track that to my writing today.” Larsen’s debut novel, “Shutter,” came out at the start of the pandemic; she remembers editing it and getting it to the publisher. It quickly caught the attention of readers who fell in love with her writing.

The NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study graduate is working on a new novel. This one is a murder mystery set in Iceland. “I was in Iceland, when I hurt my knee on the ice,” she said. Larsen had surgery and is recovered from her adventure on the ice, but the experience fed her imagination, giving her fuel for a new story. She is one of the authors invited to the 22nd Annual Authors Luncheon. Larsen was joined by Diane Power Zimmerman; Danise Payne; See Local, Page A8

COP27 talks begin with deal to discuss climate reparations Tribune Content Agency U.N. climate talks began in Egypt Sunday with a deal to discuss how rich countries can help pay for the damages caused by global warming elsewhere. The breakthrough, reported in advance by Bloomberg, will allow diplomats to officially debate so-called “loss and damage” for the first time during the two week conference in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh resort. Developing countries have been demanding a discussion on climate reparations since Confer-

ence of Parties, or COP, meetings started in the early 1990s. But industrialized nations that have prospered for two centuries at the expense of the planet repeatedly blocked efforts to add it to the agenda, fearing it would open up demands for billions of dollars in compensation from poorer countries. Recent climate disasters, such as the floods in Pakistan, had put the issue back into focus. Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry See Climate, Page A8
