El Dorado County Fair
This year’s Fair theme, “Barrows, Boots and Bling” covers many facets of our county fair. The obvious – Barrows… This year will be the 80th year of the Johnny Studebaker Wheelbarrow races. The Placerville Kiwanis Club has been the steward of this hometown tradition for many years. It is unique to our county and participants are cheered on by a grandstand full of neighbors, friends, and family.
Then there is another “barrow” — the hogs. We have a lot of market and breeding hogs for fairgoers to see and learn about. Be sure to visit the livestock barns and ask kids about their projects. You might be surprised at how much you can learn from our livestock youth. The Jr. Livestock Auction is held in the Vicini Family Pavilions on Saturday at 10 am These kids are our future leaders; head over there and support them.
The Boots part of our theme covers, well … Boots! We love our boots! Cowboy boots, work boots, hiking boots and fancy boots. So, put on yours and join us!
And we can’t forget about Bling! We have over 80 local and traveling vendors selling their unique and fun wares. You will not want for Bling after checking out some of these energetic entrepreneurs. Even if you don’t need more Bling, be sure to wear yours!
People come to the county fair for many reasons, one of my personal favorites is to see all my old friends. Your hometown fair brings everyone together in a joyful celebration and if you are new to the area, the county fair is a great way to meet new friends too. Grab a beverage; sit under a shade tree and enjoy listening to one of the many bands providing live music. At any time, you can find live music on the Mountain Valley Health Plan Stage on the Main Lawn, on the Red Hawk Casino & Resort stage next to the Tiki Bar, on the Beer Tree Stage next to the American Legion’s famous Beer Tree, or on the Capital Stage next to the Capital Bar.
This year we have events in the grandstands ALL FOUR DAYS of fair. On Thursday, check out the thrilling tricks of FMX
RampAge Freestyle Motocross. These guys are crazy! And El Dorado County, you asked for it – we are bringing Truck & Tractor Pulls on Friday night from L&L Productions. Please note that an additional ticket will be needed for the Thursday and Friday night events in the grandstands.
On Saturday, the wheelbarrow races begin at 5 pm — this is a must-see event, and it is included with fair admission.
And on Sunday, at 2 pm, watch the Rubicon Challenge. Jeepers Jamboree plus Bob Sweeney and friends have put together an exciting imitation of the famous Rubicon Trail; this is your chance to see these talented drivers in action. Again, it is included with fair admission.
Of course, who can forget FAIR FOOD! Deep fried Oreos are my personal favorite; we have lots of great fair food. Look in the Fair Guide for a listing and brief menu of the food concessionaires and ENJOY!
Safety is first and foremost to us, and we have worked hard to provide a safe and fun environment for your family. Screening for weapons is done at all gates, so please leave your pocketknives, pepper/bear spray and concealed weapons at home. We encourage fairgoers to use a clear bag; lines for those with no bags or clear bags will be shorter and those with bags will be searched prior to entering the fairgrounds.
This giant party takes us a year to prepare for and there is SO MUCH more happening that won’t fit on this page! Thank you El Dorado County for your continued support and we hope to see you at the fair!

I would like to thank everyone entrusting us with your precious children since 1999. I love being
part of this community and helping children learn and grow. With 4 children of my own (now 25, 22, 13 and 121), my own journey began in the daycare preschool eld because I was unhappy with the care and education I was receiving.
I have been blessed to have a large facility in El Dorado Hills where I employ 30 loving teachers and care for 200 children. We offer education and care for babies, Preschoolers, Pre-K, and private Kindergarten. Don’t be fooled by our large size, our teachers make each classroom homey and warm. The kids have lots of outdoor space to play, we are on over an acre and have 4 large playgrounds, a soccer eld, and a an organic garden. The Gift of Kids outdoor area gives the kids space to explore, garden, and play on age
appropriate playgrounds.
The teachers at The Gift of Kids Daycare and Preschool include talent that brings us music, yoga, and even Spanish on a daily basis. We have been working with soccer shots for over 7 years and have a very structured and advanced curriculum! Teachers here are all educated in child development, CPR and First Aid certi ed, and make it a priority to continue their education.
24 years in business, with 14 years in our same location, Business Park 1. We could not have done it without the many wonderful families here in the community that I have called home for 20 years! Again...Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me live out my dream in a business that I love and families that continue to bless us with their children. We have newly renovated the inside of our school, so come by to check it out and say hello anytime!

The Traveling Wilburys Revue
One day in 1988 George Harrison (formerly of the Beatles, reached out to some talented musicians and said, “Let’s get together and write some songs.” Answering his call were Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne, who formed The Traveling Wilburys.
This band, loaded with experience and talent, never actually performed live together but wrote hits such as “Handle with Care,” “End of the Line” and “Last Night.”
Fast forward 30-ish years and another group of talented musicians gathered together to create the Traveling Wilburys Revue. Tom Finch, a California native guitarist and Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame inductee, plays George Harrison. Chris Sanborn, studied voice in Vienna and performed with jazz vocal groups throughout Europe plays George Orbison. Steve Love, who plays Jeff Lynne, was the lead guitar/singer for the NO. 1 ‘60s tribute band, Back Pages in Northern California. Jeff Kaplan, from Asbury Park, New Jersey, scored a NO. 1 hit on alternative radio as a guitarist in the ‘80s alternative band 700 club, and has done stints playing five-string banjo in many bluegrass bands. He plays Bob Dylan. And last but not least, Mark Burgess. Mark started playing guitar when he was 9 years old. He attended the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University as a jazz performance major. He has toured Japan, worked with Robert Fripp, Kevin Eubanks

The Spazilacious Spazmatics bring the ‘80s back
The Spazmatics are truly from the ‘80s … born from a lost bet between a pupil and a professor at a high school in Thousand Oaks.
This musically challenged physics professor, the loser of the bet, had to perform the song “She Blinded Me with Science” by Thomas Dolby during halftime at a state championship basketball game. Enlisting the assistance and skills of a fellow electronics teacher who could make music generated from computers, adding the guitar and bass skills of a brother and teacher’s assistant, the band was born. The professor, Kevin Stigwood, began performing a popular ’80s dance called The Belinda with a cheerleader and the crowd roared, ending in a standing ovation.
Enveloping a favorite musical era, the ‘80s, this highenergy, skinnytied, greased hair and hornrimmed glasswearing group is guaranteed to get you up movin’ and
groovin’ to the electronic sounds of the ‘80s. This iconic sound has a wide fan base, who doesn’t like music from the ‘80s? Especially when they blast into a few favorites from artists like The Knack, Wham, Cindy Lauper, Billy Idol and more.
Get on your big hair, your skinny tie and plaid pants, then head over to the Mountain Valley Health Plan Stage (on the Main Lawn), on Saturday, June 15. The first set begins at 9 pm and the second set begins at 10:30 pm Be ready to rock with the nerds!
The Outlaw Mariachi’s play it all
The Outlaw Mariachi group has an impressive repertoire of classic rock, heavy metal, traditional mariachi and other popular tunes from all genres and performs them in its original style which leaves crowds cheering and dancing throughout the performance.
With the mix of western wear, trumpets, drums, mariachi guitars and ZZ top-like beards, the Outlaw Mariachi is such a fun sight to see with its unique blend of rock, pop, metal, hip hop, classic rock and more from Queen, Rammstein, Beastie Boys to Sublime and Selena, as well as new takes on classic mariachi staples.
The Outlaws play on the Mountain Valley Health Plan Stage Saturday, June 15 at 5:30 and again at 7 pm

Celebrating 80 Years of the El Dorado County Studebaker Wheelbarrow Races
In the heart of El Dorado County, an event that began as a smalltown competition has rolled its way into the hearts of the community and is now celebrating a remarkable milestone. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Studebaker Wheelbarrow Races. This unique tradition not only honors the ingenuity of past generations but also continues to bring together people from all walks of life.
The Studebaker Wheelbarrow Races started in 1944, amidst the backdrop of World War II, as a way to lift spirits and foster unity within the community. The idea was simple yet captivating: competitors would race while pushing wheelbarrows, which were, interestingly enough, originally manufactured by the Studebaker Corporation — once a prominent wagon and automobile manufacturer who started his business during the Gold Rush. This quirky detail adds a historical flavor to the event, connecting the past to the present.
Over the decades, the races have transformed from a modest gathering into a significant annual festival, attracting participants and spectators not only from El Dorado County but also from neighboring regions. The event has grown to
include various categories, such as races for different age groups, and a high school team relay, making it inclusive for everyone from young children to seasoned adults.
As the community gears up for this landmark celebration, local businesses are also showing their support. Pioneer Community Energy is sponsoring the event, and local students are competing in a themed art contest, highlighting the community’s strong sense of togetherness and support.
The significance of the Studebaker Wheelbarrow Races extends beyond the racetrack. It’s a testament to the endurance and spirit of El Dorado County’s residents. It’s not just about the races; it’s about celebrating where we’ve come from and where we’re going. It’s about community spirit and the simple joy of participation.
As we approach the 80th running of the wheelbarrows, El Dorado County is not just celebrating a race; it’s honoring a cherished tradition that continues to roll on, year after year. This year’s event promises to be a memorable one, encapsulating the history, culture and community spirit that have made the Studebaker Wheelbarrow Races a cornerstone event for so many years.

Fair Safety – and You
SECURITY at the upcoming El Dorado County Fair is of utmost importance to the fair staff, board and local law enforcement. Law enforcement and the fair staff encourage people to follow the “if you see something, say something” policy. Law enforcement along with fair guest services staff will be highly visible and welcome any concerns a fairgoer may have regarding safety.
The El Dorado County Fair has implemented a “clear bag” policy. As with many venues across the country, promoters are requiring clear bags be utilized during large events. This enables staff to get people through the entrance lines quickly while being thorough.
Fairgoers should not bring the following into the fair: knives (including pocket knives), mace, bear spray, brass knuckles, alcohol, illegal drugs, marijuana, weapons, or guns. Gang symbols, attire and offensive clothing, or wearables are also not allowed. (Off-duty peace officers with valid ID may bring in their weapon after checking in with security.) All attendees will walk through the metal detector. (Those with medical issues, please address your concerns to security.)
EL Dorado County Sheriff’s Department will be the ongrounds law enforcement once again. Partnered with the Placerville Police Department, El Dorado County Probation, state of California Parole, and Alcohol and Beverage Control, in uniform and undercover, will again have a strong presence at the fair. In 2023, El Dorado County Sheriff’s department began handling the safety and security at the fair, and, along with the fair staff and board, have a zero-tolerance policy for safety violations.
Parents are encouraged to photograph their children as they arrive at the fair – in case someone gets disconnected, it is helpful for El Dorado County Search and Rescue volunteers, fair security and guest services staff to find the child quickly with an accurate description — and a picture is the best way. The fair utilizes the Code Adam process to find missing children, even closing the gates until the child has been located (depending on the circumstances). All reunions are supervised by El Dorado County Search and Rescue volunteers.
So, bring happy attitudes and smiles and enjoy the fair. Please visit the fair’s website at eldoradocountyfair.org or call the office at (530) 621-5860 with any questions or concerns.
Trials of the Rubicon
2 018 was the first year for this exciting Father’s Day event and has become a Father’s Day tradition for many. This homegrown competition is available for anyone with an off-road vehicle and some off-road skills to enter and compete. This year the UTVs will be making a big comeback.
There are vehicle safety requirements, such as fire extinguishers on board, seat belts, rollover protection and always helpful — working brakes.
This competition is held by the real pros — the Jeepers Jamboree, with Bob Sweeney’s close supervision. With the help of Doug Veerkamp Engineering, the infield at the Placerville Speedway turns into a miniature Rubicon Trail, with just as many challenges as you will find on the trail and then some! The Rubicon Trail is right in our backyard, so what better hometown competition can you have?
For information about entering this competition, please call the fair office at (530) 621-5860 or email experiencetherubicon@gmail.com. The challenge begins at 2 pm on Sunday, June 16 at the Placerville Speedway (on the fairgrounds). There is no extra ticket required to watch this awesome competition.

Enjoy Boot Stompin Country at the Fair
Brodie Stewart grew up in the Bay Area and Sacramento, spending his summers in Red Bluff. At a young age, his favorite things to do were going to the rodeo, listening to country music, singing and playing the guitar. He formed a southern rock band and has toured the country, opening for big artists in front of sold-out arenas.
With his southern rock roots, Brodie returned to what he loves the most, country music. In addition to writing songs for his album, Brodie wrote and produced songs for other artists, including Enrique Iglesias.
In Brodie’s debut album “Born American,” he teamed up with guitarist/producer/songwriter Adam Shoenfeld to co-produce and lay on the album with several other top players. When asked about his debut album, Brodie said, “I’ve found my place in country music where my heart has always been. The great lyrics, honesty, passion and one kick butt party is what it’s all about.”
Brodie Stewart plays Friday, June 14 on the Mountain Valley Health Plan Stage, his first set begins at 7:45 pm and his second set at 9:15 pm

Circus Imagination and Clown College — Free Family Fun
Back in 1985, Greg Hegwer and Criss Raintree decided to run away and join the circus. They traveled the United States for 20 years, bringing happiness to kids of all ages.
When the couple retired from the traveling circus life, their son Caton took on the ringmaster hat, keeping the family tradition going.
Caton married a costumier named Carolina, and together they make up the ‘impromptu’
theater of Circus Imagination. Add two kiddos, Kaike and Aylabella and you have a family of four that create the unforgettable Circus Imagination experience, performing for children aged 3 and up all over the USA.
Circus Imagination takes kids from the audience and turns them into instant performers. Each performance can take up to 30 minutes and is a mixture of the circus’s exclusive acts depending on the age groups present. Including up to 30 children in each show, as young as 3 to 12 years old, they wear custom-made costumes over their clothes and quickly become part of a theater-based improv circus in front of their families.
The Clown College is another interactive family activity area. This is a ticket-free place where children can play and learn basic circus talents. Juggling, hula hoops and balance beams along with free play with giant soap bubbles, mazes and more make this a safe
Circus Imagination and Clown College closes when the sun sets. Located on the Main Lawn, this free event will keep your child happy and entertained.

Livestock Auction — Support our Future Leaders
Participating in your local Jr. Livestock Auction supports our local youth, who one day, will be our future leaders. The lessons learned raising a market animal is an experience that for most kids, stays with them for the rest of their lives. They learn how to treat, feed and handle animals, plus a basic course in economics. Many of these young women and men will use the funds they earn selling their market animals to help fund their continuing education. The 4H, FFA and Grange kids work hard all year to raise their stock to show at the fair and sell at the auction. Not only will you be helping out your community’s youth, but you will be putting fresh, wholesome, healthy food on your family’s table.
Becoming a Buyer at El Dorado County Fair’s Livestock Auction is easy — come to the fair between 8 and 9 am then head over to Vicini Pavilion to register. There will be plenty of volunteers on hand to help you with your questions; if it’s your first time, they are here to make you feel comfortable. The best way to access the area is to park in the parking tiers and enter through the Armory Road Gate (the shuttle busses do not start running until 9:30 am).
Auction starts at 10 am Swine, steer, lambs and goats are typically available for bidding. After the auction, the market animals are transported to a USDA approved facility and returned to a selected local processor (butcher) — the meat you purchase is of the highest quality and safely processed.
Below is a breakdown of ways you can help:
• What if I don’t need that much meat OR I want to support kids, but I don’t want the meat?
Option 1: Buy half or a quarter of an animal.
You can share a purchase by bidding with friends and family members.
Option 2: Resell the animal. If you purchase a 1,200 pound steer for $3.00/ pound, the gross cost is $3,600.
If you elect RESALE, the processor buys the steer at current market price (let’s say $1.00 per pound.) Your credit would be $1,200, then you would owe $2,400.
The auction committee takes care of all of the paperwork and transactions for you; mark “RESALE” on your invoice after you make your purchase.
Option 3: Donate the meat to one of several local nonprofits. (More information is available at the registration desk.) Note: You will be charged for the processing of donated meat.
Option 4: Join the Group! The Group is a consortium of buyers who donate at least $200. These funds are used to raise prices for all exhibitors after the auction. Check with a tax professional regarding tax deductions for price paid above the market value of the animal.
36 El Dorado County Fair 2024 Mountain Democrat
• What if I can’t attend the auction, but I still want to help?
Send a proxy to bid! You can find the Proxy Buyer letter on our website. Many businesses send a representative from the company. Also, see Option 4 above. You can join “The Group” any day of
the year by emailing the Auction Committee edcauction@gmail. com. Buyers at auctions receive publicity and advertising at the well-attended auction, with business name being shown on a large screen above the stage when the bid is won.
So, head over to the Livestock Barns on Saturday, June 15 at 8 am to support your local youth.

Monkey around at the El Dorado County Fair
Returning to the El Dorado County Fair is a favorite of many, Wild About Monkeys.
This fascinating, and educational show is brought to you by Kevin and Martina Keith. They are excellent trainers, as well as gifted with incredible instincts of wild, as well as domestic, animals. They seek to share with their audience the fun facts about these primates, as well as entertain.
Training baboons is Kevin’s specialty. He believes baboons are by far the most socially intelligent primate. If you see a baboon in a movie, it is most likely one of Kevin’s friendly baboons. Currently, Wild About Monkeys is
the only traveling animal exhibition that features trained baboons. The Mandrill baboon is the only one of this kind to be safely and humanely handled on stage today. Wild About Monkeys has three shows each day on the Main Lawn. They will perform and charm you with their antics. And be careful, you may learn something while having such a good time. They will educate you on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 2, 4 and 7:30 pm, and on Sunday at 2:30, 5 and 7:30 pm You’re not going to want to miss these beautiful creatures.

A Rose is a Rose …
This year’s El Dorado Rose pageant winner will be announced in the Imagination Theater on Thursday, June 13 at 7 pm.
Who, (or what) is the El Dorado Rose? In 1976, the El Dorado County Fair Special Events Committee discussed the need for a program or event that would honor our local mature women. The first annual El Dorado Rose Ball was held in the Spring of 1980. At the ball, dressed in beautiful late 19th century period ball gowns, new candidates and their sponsors were presented during the grand promenade.
Rose candidates must be over the age of 60, have lived in El Dorado County for at least 10 years, and have contributed community service as a volunteer.
They are judged on several things, their costume must be a reproduction or original of dresses worn before 1910, their style, overall appearance (including accessories), workmanship, and their knowledge of El Dorado County.
You will see these beautiful “Roses” at local events, such as ribbon cuttings, grand openings, of course, the fair and other community events.
Their competition happens a week before the fair opens and is not open to the public, but the winner of the Pageant is a closely guarded secret until opening night of the fair. Best of luck to this year’s candidates, Gail Butler, Kathryn Gillihan and Sandra Hand.

Cool Carnival Rides for the Whole Family
Returning to El Dorado County Fair this year is Paul Maurer Shows. Paul Maurer Shows is a complete traveling amusement company, based out of California.
Currently, Paul Maurer Shows produce and support more than 100 events throughout the Western United States. Paul Maurer Shows is known for its unique, brightly painted rides, and their sparking lights (that shine brightly at night) including their newest ride, a thrill seeker’s favorite, the 55-foot tall “Rock Star.” This year, El Dorado County Fair includes the Giant Expo Wheel, a 65 foot view from the top! Also, locals favorite “Freak Out” and the Drop Tower. (Who wants to be dropped 100 feet?)
The Main Carnival is located on the “back lawn” area, right inside the Armory Road gate. Most of these rides require a minimum height between 42-inches and 54-inches tall.
The Kiddie Carnival is located inside the gate off Placerville Drive and is geared toward children between 36-inches and 42-inches tall. In addition to the Ferris Wheel, your children will get their thrills on Jumping Jeeps, Motorcycles, Safari Train,
Berry-Go-Round, and more.
From the colorful, three-toned canvases on the rides and games, the food concession wagons selling carnival favorites like Hand Dipped Corndogs, Cotton-Candy and Popcorn, Paul Maurer Shows continues to commit to making your fair experience one
of the best.
With so many rides, the best buy at the fair is the four-day unlimited ride wristband, available for purchase until June 12 at midnight for $85. This is not available once the fair opens. Other options are the single-day, unlimited ride wristband, offered
