Acme Glass going strong for more than 50 years

Acme Glass has been family owned and operated since it was founded in 1968 by Doug Robinson, who started it with a partner.

Originally named National Glass, which mainly did auto and residential glass work, the business moved to its present location on Martin Road in 1979, and Robinson passed the busi ness to his sons in 1992. Scott Robin son bought out his brother and took over the running of the company.

General Manager Eric Wortman bought the business from Scott in

2020 and has been steering it ever since.

Dee Dee Ada, the newest general manager, said it was a challenging time for everyone.

“We still are experiencing delays because of supply chain issues,” she said.

The business has continued to thrive and is currently looking at work projects clear into 2023.

Acme’s commercial projects have included the Amazon building in Vacaville and the Fish and Game building in Cordelia. They stopped doing car window repairs year ago.

From residential glass work for new construction, remodeling or repair,

Acme Glass Company does it all. The projects range from windows, shower doors, storefronts, cabinet glass, patio doors, security doors or even screens. Acme also replaces foggy, leaky or cracked windows on RVs and motorhomes so those drivers can see clearly again.

They have also worked on commer cial projects at the Texas Roadhouse in Fairfield and the Lake Solano Nature Center.

“We don’t have any place to expand or anything,” Ada said. “Keeping the business small is important.”

They currently have about 18 employees.

Rancho Fino Cocina Mexicana the newest eatery in Rockville Corner

Rancho Fino Cocina Mexicana is the dream of Antonio (Tony) Salazar since he was 16 years old and started working.

A native of Mexico, he came to America when he was just 6 years old with his family. His mother, Patricia Martinez, would cook for the whole family with recipes from her great-great-grandmother. Sometimes she would be making meals for 300 people.

“She would teach her to cook by having her put everything in the skillet,” he said. “She was disabled, so Mom learned to cook for her.”

Those home-cooked meals turned into the inspiration for his own restaurant, Rancho Fino Cocina Mexicana, at Rock ville Corner.

“Without those recipes, I wouldn’t have a restaurant,” he said.

Salazar opened in March of this year with his mother in the kitchen cooking. His wife, Natalie, joined him with her own contributions being that she came from a family in the restau rant business.

“I had no idea her father had two taquerias when I met her,” he said.

His mom has since stepped away from the kitchen and let someone else

take the reins, but her love of good cooking permeates each and every dish.

It took some time for Salazar to get where he is today, with years of working in other people’s kitchens and slowly working his way up the chain of command until he was a manager.

“Then I fell and love and quit,” he said.

Salazar started working at another restaurant and realized he wanted to be in business for himself. He reached

out to a friend to join him as a partner. Jesus Murillo said yes to a partnership and they started looking for a place.

“Murillo is no relation to the Murillo restaurant, he just happens to have the same name,” Salazar said.

They found the perfect spot at 4163 Suisun Valley Road.

“I loved this area and wanted to have a restaurant here after working for Vezers,” he said.

His partner brings his own recipes for delicious tacos and homemade sauces from his own family.

Salazar thinks some crowd favor ites are the beef birria with onion and cilantro, tacos and chili verde.

“Traditionally birria is made from goat but we make it with beef in a sauce,” he said.

“It really just came together with two families’ recipes,” Salazar said, “and without my mother and my wife I wouldn’t have anything.”

Native Daughters of the Golden West supports California’s heritage

Native Daughters of the Golden West started officially in March 1887 with the goal of maintaining the history of California for generations to come.

The Order of the Native Daughters of the Golden West is a fraternal and patriotic organization founded on the principles of Love of Home, Devotion to the Flag, Veneration of the Pioneers, Faith in the Existence of God.

The mission of the Native Daugh ters of the Golden West, as one of the oldest associations of diverse Califor nia-born leaders, is to preserve Cali fornia’s history and better the quality of life through active participation in education and community service.

The first meeting occurred Sept. 11,

1886, in the basement of what is now a historical landmark, the Pioneer Hall, in Jackson. The founding members called the space a parlor, and the founding group was called “Ursula.” Charter officers were seated March 7, 1887, with 33 founding members.

The Solano County parlor was offi cially formed during a formal event on March 20, 1971, in the Holy Spirit hall in Fairfield.

The organization focuses on proj ects that retain and support the heri tage of California. This includes historic restoration of California mis sions, the maintaining of the Roster of California Pioneers, scholarships, environmentalism, child welfare and the development of historical land marks.

For many years, the primary cause for the local parlor was a children’s

organization, but the group also cared for a section of the Linear Trail for about a decade. It also has, over the years, supported veterans groups, and after 9/11 brought cookies to firefight ers.

Now most of the funds it raises goes to support the larger organization.

Because there is no Sons of the Golden West in the area, men are welcome to participate with the local group.

The members meet the second Wednesday of each month at the IOOF Building, 805 Main St., in Suisun City.
