on course for

Agility World Championship

Megan Miller realized her passion for animals, especially dogs, at a very young age. Growing up in a dog-loving household meant there was always a dog running around her house.

Story by Jana Rossi Photos by Great Dane Photos
6 HAPPY HEALTHY PETS 2023

Her passion for dogs, and all animals for that matter, grew even more, leading her to study at the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine. After graduating in 2019, she returned to her roots in El Dorado County, where she went to work at Goldorado Animal Hospital in Cameron Park. Today, you can find Miller using her veterinary gifts at Meridian Veterinary Care in Folsom.

But becoming a veterinarian is not where Miller’s story ends, and it is her second passion that she became involved with that is taking her to destinations much further than her hometown of Rescue.

Over the years Miller took an interest in the sport of dog agility but it wasn’t until last year that she took her enthusiasm for the sport to the next level. She and her four-legged partner Maeraki, Mae for short, whose name in Greek means “putting yourself into your work” flew to Pennsylvania to compete at the American Kennel Club 2022 European Open Team tryouts.

Although the two did not qualify during that trip to take part on the World Team, it didn’t break their spirits. Earlier this year, they made their way to St. Louis, Miss., where they qualified to be on the 2023 AKC/USA Agility World Team. Now this dynamic duo will be traveling across the globe to the town of Liberec in the Czech Republic to compete in the Agility World Championship.

It was years of training dogs and working with local agility trainers Amie Lambert and Kathi Kikuyama that helped prepare Miller for this opportunity, one that she said she is both excited for and nervous about. She described the sport as a mental game.

“Maeraki will rock it, but it boils down to the mental game, the human component, and it all happens so quickly,” Miller shared, referring to the competition and having to run 6-7 yards per second, all while completing the entire course in less than 30 seconds.

The sport of dog agility focuses on the handler giving cues to their dog, who is not only relying on hand signals but also their handler’s body language. The competition is broken up into height categories that signifies not only the size of the dog but the height

of the dog’s jump ability. Four-year-old Mae will be competing in the 24-inch jump category, as she is a border collie taller than 22 inches.

The agility course consists of pre-set obstacles. Handlers are only given eight minutes prior to the start of the event to walk the course and get a mental picture of what cues will be needed in order to get their four-legged athlete through the course, which can consist of between 14 and 20 challenges that are made up of tunnels, seesaws, weave poles, tire jumps and pause tables that each dog must stop at for a set amount of time.

Miller says she will continue in the sport and already has plans to try out for the European Open that will be held early December in Latrobe, Penn.

It is difficult to imagine that between work and competing Miller would have any downtime, but she said when she does get time to breathe, she loves to go hiking in the mountains and taking photos of, yes, her dogs.

The Agility World Open takes place Oct. 4-8 and will be streamed on akc.tv. U

Rising can’t keep rescues from caring costs

The driving motivation for many an animal rescue organization is as simple as the name implies; some people, given the opportunity, would like to help rescue animals. Sometimes the furry friends may have to leave their old homes due to owners moving, passing on or being unable to afford their care; other times, the animal might not have had a home to begin with.

HAPPY HEALTHY PETS 2023 13

For those trying to do

times can hit twice as hard. As inflation raises the cost of rearing animals, some owners may have to let go of their animals; in turn, the shelter that takes those animals in now has another animal to feed while prices are high. Some local rescues are feeling the economic pressure but continue to care for the animals they have taken in.

“Anyone with an animal, especially horses, has felt the price increase,” said Stacey Iverson, grants and program development manager for El Dorado County’s All About Equine Animal Rescue. “Between droughts, floods and labor difficulties, finding the kind of hay you want has been hard.”

All About Equine has been operating in the county since 2009,

motivated to rescue and rehabilitate “abused, neglected, abandoned, unwanted and/or slaughter-bound animals,” according to information on the nonprofit’s website. Since

AAE’s history puts economic challenges into clear context. When the rescue opened in 2009, a ton of hay could cost anywhere between $40-$150; this year, according to Iverson, the price for a single ton hit as high as $400. Considering that a mature horse can eat between 3-4 tons of hay in a year, according to an Iowa State University Equine Science study, the costs can ramp up quickly.

“When even bales have gone up to more than $30, it’s impacted a lot of rescues and people in general,” Highcrest Farms owner Dr. RaeLynn Brister explained.

A neuro-psychologist who works with children with disabilities, Brister formed Highcrest Farms as a way to help animals while also helping people, saying she saw the

“A lot of the animals, they gravitate to kids with disabilities,” Brister said. “You see a child who doesn’t really have social skills with their peers able to end up with a

the Cameron Park-based rescue has been able to keep its animals well-fed thanks in part to a partnership with a local grocery store.

“We’re fortunate, being a smaller rescue, that we have contracts with Grocery Outlet in Folsom,” Brister added. “So, any of their produce they don’t feel is at a quality to go out on the shelves or it’s past the expiration date; as long as it’s not moldy, you know, the animals can eat that.”

All About Equine is also aided by local business, as they work closely with Lee’s Feed in Shingle Springs to find feed and other supplies at a cost that works for them. Such partnerships show the strength of the El Dorado County community, working together to make sure animals in need are taken care of.

“Animals don’t know when there’s a recession,” All About Equine volunteer Dana Schumacher remarked as she looked at a meticulously kept feeding schedule for the 50-60 horses currently at the rescue. “Their owners might not be able to afford to keep them anymore, but the animal doesn’t know that. If the economy is good or not, the animals just want to eat.” U

Mount Tallac, South Lake Tahoe

Mt. Tallac is a difficult 10-mile trail but the view from the top was worth it for me. Once you pass Cathedral Lake the steep grade and loose rock are hazards, as are the razor-sharp volcanic rocks near the peak. Views of Fallen Leaf Lake, Lake Tahoe and Desolation Wilderness are waiting for you at the summit.

Be prepared! The 3,250foot elevation gain is no small task. Winds can whip and wear you out. Take walking sticks as the trail is strewn with loose rock. Take plenty of water and snacks. Your dog may make it look easy but prepare for them too with water and snacks.

On the lighter side, the meadows are lush with grass and fern. The wildflowers are abundant in spring. The view from the ridge line is what epic movies are made of.

This trail is made for locals out for a jog. This is a family friendly and dog friendly trail. My sons enjoyed the exercise stations along the trail — pullup bars and sit-up benches, among others. The trail ends at 3.1 miles at Forni Road, making for a 6.2-mile outand-back walk, jog or ride.

Catecroft, Cool

Just south of the town of Cool and north of Northside Elementary School on Highway 49 is a roadside pullout called Catecroft gate. Room for eight or 10 cars can be found here but a few horse trailers can easily take up that space.

Catecroft is a short trail, about 1 mile, more of a connector trail to other treks such as the much larger Olmstead Loop Trail.

Pictured is a pit bull named TJ, one of 27 dogs rescued in June 2021 from an illegal dogfighting ring operated in Placerville. TJ was known as a “buy dog” in the operation, or a dog bred to be sold for fighting.

Following his rescue TJ was entrusted into the care of the folks at BAD RAP, a nonprofit organization based in the Bay Area that is focused in part on rescuing and rehabilitating pit bulls that were in dogfighting rings.

TJ has since been adopted by a family with experience rescuing fighting dogs.

“He’s a very traumitized dog,” said his new owner, whose name and location have been withheld for safety concerns.

Loud noises such as other dogs barking, new men and kitchen aprons are all things that cause TJ to panic.

Despite this, TJ is living a happy and spoiled life. He loves to eat sausage and bacon, enjoys swimming and is a very affectionate and curious dog, according to his owner. “He’s changed my life,” the owner said. “I can’t imagine a life without him.” U

The mission at All Souls Animal Rescue and Sanctuary is to provide animals in need a safe place to land. To ensure the safety and well being for each animal. Providing medical care, housing, and love to each and every one of them. Also working to help them overcome whatever their past may hold.

Our vision is a simple one. To provide animals in need a safe, loving, and forever home. To provide a place of peace where they are free to roam, lay in the sun, enjoy belly rubs, one to many treats, and know that this is their last home. VOLUNTEER DONATE

helps the pets PetAid that need it most

When El Dor-ado County Animal Services officers first met Jewels in May 2021, she was in about as rough a shape as a horse could be in, according to Chief Henry Brzezinski.

“When we take in horses, their health is ranked from one to nine,” Brzezinski explained, noting one was the low end of the scale. “This horse we had taken in from a really bad hoarding case, and she was at a one, maybe honestly a half.”

Jewels was immediately transported to an animal hospital for a week of treatment, which was only the first step in her long road to recovery. Severely malnourished and underfed, Jewels

required constant attention and periodic feeding to help her get back to a healthy weight.

Volunteers like Marianne Cann would go to her trough every six hours, like clockwork, to give her more food to eat. When Jewels had a health issue

flare up in late August 2021, she saw two more vets, and had to have her feet iced by Cann two or three times a day for weeks.

Jewels was eventually able to be adopted and has been thriving since.

“She’s been living the good life for

about two years now,” Cann said. “It took a lot to get her back to health, one of the wonderful things that Pet Aid does.”

Jewels is only a single success story among hundreds of animals helped by the Pet Aid Fund, according to El Dorado County

Animal Shelter Supervisor Brittany White. With a law on the books in California that requires animal services to help all animals capable of being adopted, Pet Aid is a set of funds set aside to specifically help the animals that may require extra care

24 HAPPY HEALTHY PETS 2023
Story by Odin Rasco

and attention from the shelter.

“Pet Aid is a special fund that people can donate to that helps adoptable animals more adoptable,” White explained. “If an animal comes in and they have a broken leg or needs major surgery, or come in with heartworms, it’s an extra medical fund that helps those animals.”

Depending on the animal’s needs, vets at the shelter may be able to help, with the county budget going toward regular basic services such as spaying and neutering. But in other cases, Pet Aid will provide the funds needed to be treated by a specialist.

Another animal helped by Pet Aid is Duke the dog. Found wandering the roads in terrible shape, Duke’s skin was raw and infected; Pet Aid covered the costs of a dermatology specialist. The specialist was able to determine the pup was suffering from pemphigus, an autoimmune disorder that attacks the animal’s own outer skin layer as if they were dangerous foreign cells.

Duke is now on immunosuppressants and his coat has grown back in, ready for petting. The new medication can be hard on the kidneys and liver, but Pet Aid saves the day once again, as it has covered the costs of his regular blood work to make sure that Duke stays happy and healthy.

Also at the shelter, Louise — a medium-sized black dog with a shy smile on her face — has been receiving treatment for her heartworms thanks to Pet Aid as well. Sometimes the fund goes beyond medical needs and can cover training that will help a pet and their new owners ease into a happy and harmonious adoption.

Shelter animals aided by Pet Aid come at no extra cost to adopt; all the extra care they received is covered by the fund, which is in turn able to operate thanks to generous donations from the community. The Buttercup Pantry in Placerville has put on a fundraiser two years in a row — 2022 and 2023 — where 5% of the day’s proceeds to

go toward Pet Aid, according to Cann.

Individuals can donate to the Pet Aid fund directly, and such donations are generally tax deductible, according to the county web site. Donation information can be found at bit.ly/petaidfund. U

For those who have pets — those who have had times when animals have inexplicably healed a heart in a moment — there are no words. These dogs have an innate understanding of what is needed. When doing their work they have been described as “working a room” and know who needs their help and they have gone to that person.

In physiological terms a dog’s presence lowers blood pressure, reduces anxiety and stress and can technically be described as oxytocin release. They are like antidepressants without needing a pill. When going into a group environment where tensions may be high, the pawed healers act like

an ice breaker as people are drawn to them and often forget about the aggravation they may have entered with.

Having witnessed a moment when Roy, the H4H dog serving

and the pain of the world diminished.

These dogs are not traditional service dogs as service dogs assist with their owner’s special needs 24/7. H4H dogs are dogs specially trained and called into service when necessary.

These dogs are trained at a very young age to respond to their environment and handlers in a particular way. For example, when these dogs are in service at a fire house they have been trained to deal with the chaos when there is a call, they know when to go crate themselves, they know how to deal with the related emotion.

At the Rescue Fire Department H4H dog Ash is at Capt. Brett Jones’ side. “This program is lifesaving,” said Jones,

who became a firefighter more than 20 years ago and added, “Mental health was not talked about. About five years ago we recognized we had to find ways to cope.” First responders see events in their daily work that most people won’t see in their lifetime and it’s important to find ways to handle this stress.

H4H was founded in 2021 by Shelley Martell, the wife of a Contra Costa County first responder who has been in service more than 40 years. They lost their dog through a traumatic experience and it had a profound effect on her husband. As a result, she saw the need for help for first responders, something deeper than traditional therapy and peer work, and found

the answer was a unique category of dogs.

H4H dogs are trained as puppies and carefully selected for the traits that work perfectly in the program. It was determined Bernedoodles, Labradoodles, goldendoodles and goldendoodle minis fit the bill. These dogs weigh 30-50 pounds and they are the ideal size for the work. Their coats are hypoallergenic, enabling them to be around allergysensitive people. The breeds are friendly, intelligent, easy to train and

they love people. Trainers start working with puppies as young as eight weeks. H4H pups have been placed with fire departments, police departments and hospitals.

Meet Roy and Ash

Roy the firehouse dog is an 8-month-old mini-goldendoodle and was donated to Garden Valley Fire by H4H. Roy was named after loved and respected Garden Valley Fire Chief Roy Buchmiller, who passed away last year. Roy has been

with Norman and GVF since February and comes to work with Norman every day. He has thoroughly planted his sweet loving spirit in the hearts

of those at the fire station and in the community. Roy will sometimes remain at the department overnight to accompany the overnight duty

watch. The plan is to get Roy trained so he is certified as a peer support therapy dog, also to get Roy fully certified as a fullfledged service dog.

This training usually takes a year or two.

When seeing Roy at the park he is pure puppy but when his fire dog vest goes on he knows it’s time to work. “Roy is very smart and he has been easy to train,” noted Norman. Roy has fit in well with Norman’s family too. They have kids and a family dog at home, and Roy fits right in.

All services necessary for Roy are supplied on the Divide. The community has been very generous in its support of Roy; Garden Valley Feed donated food and Black Oak Animal Hospital has been been generous in grooming Roy, a task that is a necessity every few weeks.

Ash is a Bernedoodle. Jones has had Ash since

December 2022 and she is with him every day. Ash and Jones attend therapy dog training every Saturday at Foothill Dog Rescue. Every couple weeks they are part of a group that visits public venues so the dogs can be used to being around each other.

Ash is very much part of Jones’ family life, with his 16-year-old daughter being in love with the pooch. The family’s two miniature schnauzers are buddies with Ash; they are a lot smaller than Ash, so Ash dictates play time.

But Like Roy, Ash knows when she is on the job. “One thing I noticed when she has her vest on she is in work mode then we go home and she is in puppy mode and wants to play,”

Jones shared. “The only training I did with her was sit and stay. She learned to go in the crate on her own.”

When there is a fire or Jones goes on a call where Ash is not able to accompany him, she will go into her crate. If Jones has to leave for an extended period of time his wife is the backup handler and she will tend to Ash.

Ash and Jones are working on getting an evaluation from Pet Partners that would certify Rescue Fire’s pup to visit hospitals.

As fire departments often struggle with funding these days one of the big jobs H4H makes sure of is that ongoing care of these dogs is handled through

fundraisers and the fire departments don’t pay anything. H4H pays for insurance for the dog and handler, food, grooming, vet bills and more

Individual handlers also have found donors to help. Jones has been taking his dogs to Wiggles Dog Grooming for years and Wiggles now donates grooming care for Ash. The Rescue Volunteer Fire Association has fallen in love with Ash and sponsors her dog food.

Each dog in the program has its own Instagram account. Find Ash @ashthefiredog83 and Roy @firedogroy. Visit hearts4heroesusa.org or call (916) 803-3289 for information about H4H. U

Emergencies may happen over the course of your pet’s life. Do you know the best practices for handling them? UC Davis critical care veterinarians have some tips for you on when to seek immediate medical assistance and what to do to make your pet more comfortable or possibly save a life.

First and foremost, stay calm. Take a few deep, slow breaths and focus on the task at hand – this will give you the best chance of saving your dog or cat.

Many emergencies happen outside the home, such as a car accident or hiking injury. As in the case of human first aid, your safety is paramount so that you can help an injured companion. Assess your surroundings. Are there cars, other animals or other hindrances nearby that could make the situation more dangerous? Is the injured animal showing overly aggressive tendencies? If so, a muzzle may be necessary. If you don’t have one, a rope or leash can be used as a substitute. Even the sweetest dog can become aggressive in a chaotic situation or when they are in pain. Never take anything for granted in an emergency.

Once you feel the situation is stable, examine the animal. Is your pet listening to you and responsive to sounds? If so, your voice could help reassure them. Try not to panic – your

calmness may help them feel less anxious.

Next, check your pet’s breathing. Is it heavy or labored? This may indicate a more severe issue. Check for any obvious injuries. Just because you don’t see wounds or major injuries doesn’t mean there aren’t any. Palpate your pet’s body to check for signs of pain. All of this will help you determine how quickly you need to seek veterinary care.

Remember, any first aid you administer is not a substitute for professional veterinary care. Even with minor injuries, it is always a good idea to follow up with your primary veterinarian.

Wounds, bleeding, fractures

Many minor wounds can be managed at home, but if there is excessive bleeding (continuous after 10 minutes of constant pressure), seek veterinary care immediately.

If the bleeding stops shortly after applying pressure, reduce environmental contamination by cleaning the wound with water and removing dirt or other debris. This may require trimming the hair around the wound if your pet allows. Do not use human medicine such as an antibiotic or pain relief ointment. Cover the wound with a clean, dry dressing such as gauze, and lightly bandage and wrap the area. If the bleeding is severe, keep pressure on the wound throughout transport to the nearest veterinary hospital. Internal bleeding is also a major concern in many accidents. Signs include: pale gums, weakness or collapse, distended belly and difficulty breathing.

Fractures can be some of the most painful injuries for animals, so keep your safety in mind, as dogs with broken bones may bite. Try to keep them as stable as possible while transporting them to the hospital. Securing your pet to a hard, flat surface

is best, but do not apply pressure to the chest while securing – this may cut off their ability to breath.

Do not bandage or wrap an open fracture in any way. Also, do not splint a limb before transport. This could cause more pain or make the break worse. Do not give dogs or cats any human pain medications as they all have the potential for significant side effects in animals.

Seizures

Seizures manifest as rapid, uncontrolled jerking movements. Remain calm. Often, a seizure is more stressful for the human than the animal experiencing it. Time the seizure. If it is less than two minutes, it may not be severe and you can follow-up with your primary veterinarian (if your pet appears fine afterward). If it lasts longer than two minutes, you should seek immediate veterinary care.

During a seizure, keep your pet away

from harmful objects or areas where it could sustain injury. Also, keep other pets away, as they may attack the animal in seizure. Do not restrain or hold your pet down; this could worsen the situation. Do not place your hand near its mouth, as animals tend to bite down while seizing.

Seizures may be symptoms of poisoning, epilepsy, meningitis or a brain tumor. It’s important to speak with your veterinarian to determine the cause and develop any needed treatment plan.

Heat stroke

Heat stroke can occur when a pet is trapped in a hot environment or through over-exertion. It can occur on both extremely hot and mild days if animals are not adjusted to the weather or caught somewhere without fresh air, like inside a car. Because dogs and cats cannot sweat, they rely on panting to cool down. Obese,

brachycephalic, and thicker coated dogs may be more prone to heat stroke.

Heat stroke can damage all body tissues; the brain, kidneys and gastrointestinal tract are particularly vulnerable. Severe heat stroke can be

fatal, even with advanced veterinary care. Prevention is the best option.

Never leave your pet in a car, even on a mildly warm day. In balmy 70-degree (F) temperatures, a car’s interior can increase to 89 degrees in 10 minutes and reach 104 degrees in 30 minutes.

Signs of heat stroke

Excessive panting or respiratory distress, drooling distress/ restlessness, weakness, unsteady walking or collapse, Pale gums

How to treat heat stroke

If the animal is weak, unsteady, collapsed, disoriented, or having trouble breathing, seek veterinary care immediately. If the animal is panting heavily but still able to walk normally, move it to a cooler area and wet it down with water. Avoid making it too cold – normal body temperature for dogs and cats is 101 to 102.5 degrees (F). If an animal is panting heavily, a fan will help cool it more quickly. Give the animal access to water. If heat stroke symptoms do not subside within 30 minutes, seek veterinary care.

Insect bites or stings

There is a long-standing myth that spider bites are a common occurrence

in animals. In fact, UC Davis faculty teach veterinary students that if an animal appears to have a bite, it is rarely from a spider.

Many animals however, do get stung by bees and wasps. These stings will cause swelling (often symmetrical, as the sting manifests as a systemic allergic reaction), pain and itchiness resulting in pawing at the site. If possible, remove the stinger. Common places for pets to get stung are on the tongue, in the mouth or on the lips because they often try to catch the insect with their mouth. Stings are often painful, so be cautious when handling your pet as they may bite when distressed or in pain.

If the reaction to the sting is mild, you can monitor your pet at home. Swelling will probably go down in 6-12 hours.

If the reaction is severe, causing your pet to vomit, have difficulty breathing and/or appear distressed or lethargic, seek veterinary care.

Signs of a snakebite may include: puncture marks, swelling, bruising or redness around the bite site, pain, bleeding, vomiting and weakness.

What to do if your pet has been bitten by a snake

Reduce movement – carry the bitten animal if possible. Walking on a bitten leg will increase the spread of venom throughout the body. Seek veterinary care ASAP – severe snakebites can be life threatening and the earlier treatment is provided, the less damage the bite will cause.

What not to do

Do not try to catch the snake. Do not cut around or suction over the fang marks. It is a myth that you can bleed or suck the venom out of the bite area. Do not place a tourniquet or wrap the bitten area if the bite is on a leg, as this can lead to more severe tissue injury. Do not place an ice pack on the bite. U

four-legged officers Foothills K9 devoted to

until the end

Dogs are truly a man’s best friend, providing the best company with unconditional love for their owners and have solidified themselves into everyday life. Many breeds are naturally social and playful, but have also proven themselves time and again to be useful in the working culture. Our versatile furry friendlies have taken up their own jobs beside humans and act as therapy pets, are essential in search and rescue situations for their sense of smell and have become an asset for law enforcement.

Story and photos by Eric Jaramishian
40 HAPPY HEALTHY PETS 2023

K9s are essential in law enforcement for detecting narcotics and explosives, apprehending suspects, providing security in controlled areas and additional officer protection. These K9s are important to their handlers, both professionally and emotionally, and a bond between human and K9 is cemented.

K9 officers need funding for expenses such as protective equipment or medical treatment.

That is where the Foothills K9 Association comes in. A group of law enforcement officials and community members in 2005 got together to answer the question of how to best support K9s when they get older and retire, which oftentimes can incur major medical expenses. Since then the nonprofit, consisting of members of the Placerville Police Department, along with the Placer County Sheriff’s Office and Roseville, Rocklin, Folsom and Twin Rivers police departments, has made it its mission to support K9 units and their handlers in their mission to help keep peace in their communities.

“That is the catchphrase: ‘For the dogs,’” said Julie Baldwin, secretary and treasurer for Foothills K9. “We provide support for anything that the dogs need in order to make their lives safer and better that isn’t already provided by local departments due to constraints or policy reasons.”

From expenses such as providing ballistic vests, heat alarms for law enforcement vehicles, and medical expenses for retired K9s, law enforcement officers who sign up for a membership with Foothills K9 have the benefit of being backed by an organization dedicated to providing support for the brave pets.

“These are the heroes that did everything for their handlers and they don’t ask anything from us,” Baldwin

said. “They want a ball tug, to be called a ‘good boy’ … that’s about it. But we want to be there to back them up with more than just that.”

Though their main focus is to support K9s in the areas surrounding Sacramento, they have helped dogs as far south as Galt and as far west as the Napa region, according to Baldwin. In addition to membership fees and accepting donations, the organization’s major fundraiser for the year is a private show for an annual comedy night at Laughs Unlimited Comedy Club and Lounge in Old Sacramento, complete with a silent auction and raffle, hosted the first Sunday in April.

In the event of an extraordinary event involving a K9, the organization will conduct a media blast to garner community support.

“That is the other half of Foothills, which is to inform the public about the needs of K9s,” Baldwin said. “A lot of times the public will see a dog and say, ‘Oh cool, you have a dog, that is awesome!’ and don’t really think about it. But we have a bank that is ready in case something happens.”

The organization has helped its members in a pinch, offering to pay upfront for major and immediate emergencies that involve shelling out thousands of dollars to help save the furry hero.

A Woodland Police K9 named Peydro was hit by a car while chasing a suspect in the middle of the night. Baldwin was contacted by Peydro’s owner and handler, who told her the German Shepherd would need surgery at a cost of $22,000. Baldwin, with the help of other community members, was quick to give the green light.

This is made possible only through the generous support of our caring donors. Please consider donating today to help HartSong continue its mission.

THE SANCTUARY ANIMALS

HartSong Ranch Animal Sanctuary is a 30-acre facility offering a lifetime of care to 60+ previously neglected and abused horses, cows, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, and geese. We provide a platform to observe firsthand the way farm animals behave when they are not expected to be used for milk, meat, clothing, or labor. We allow the animals living within our gates to simply be; and, as a result, connect to one another and humans with an awe-inspiring sense of calm and trust. Come to meet these remarkable beings! Schedule a fieldtrip/tour by calling us today.

HartSong Ranch pulls shelter dogs that are never allowed on adoption room floors due to failed temperament evaluations– ‘RED LISTED’ for euthanasia because they are terrified or shut down emotionally in the shelter environment. They are immediately placed into loving foster homes, allowed time to decompress and then once ready, placed up for adoption.

We pull senior dogs scheduled for euthanasia from the shelter environment. They are placed into loving, warm “fospice” homes (foster + hospice) until they take their last breath. Our mission is to make the last days/months/years of a senior pup’s life the best they have ever known. HartSong Ranch covers all expenses. Please consider becoming a fospice care provider.

Foothills K9 member since 2013, called Baldwin about K9 Jupp this summer after a diagnosis of gastric dilatation-volvulus, commonly known as “bloat.” Despite the organization’s best efforts and quick response from Willey, the retired K9 succumbed to the condition.

“They were my lifeline, and Julie was there for me for the next two days being supportive,” Willey said.

Placerville police officer Amber Robinson and her pup Ares, who have been working together since 2022, are submitting applications to become lifelong members of Foothills K9. “I actually found out about it through Willey and figured it would be a good idea for Ares and I,” Robinson said.

Folks can donate to the K9 cause via PayPal or through the organization’s website foothillsk9. org.

“It is an honor to dedicate time and energy to making sure each dog is healthy into their retirement,” Baldwin said. “Just as with humans, dogs may require a

good deal more healthcare in their retirement years. We are happy to cover those bills for our K9 heroes. At this time, that’s the biggest expense we have.” U

“This children’s book, written for ages 4 years and above, will resonate with young readers and adults alike. It tells a simple story of homecoming and friendship, imagined and told by a horse named Chance.

Chance was rescued along with other members of his herd and came to live with a Rescue Mom and Dad at their ranch in California. Readers may recognize some themes in Second Chance that are present not only in the animal world, but in our own: different models of parenting and home, the challenge of bullying or exclusion, and the care and compassion that we can give and receive. The book introduces young audiences to the story of a special horse and to an important face of animal welfare work—foster care and re-homing. In doing so, we hope to bring to life the mission of Horse Tales Rescue, the real-world organization represented in this story.”

48 HAPPY HEALTHY PETS 2023
Story and photos by Isaac Streeter

Susan Wirgler has always been a horse person. She started riding as a little girl and knew that working with horses was what she wanted to spend her life doing.

“It was my calling,” Wirgler said. “It wasn’t always my career, but I knew it was my calling.”

Now Wirgler has made it both, owning an operating Wirgler’s Horse Human Partnership in Shingle Springs. She has lived in the area for the past 23 years and opened her business in 2004 after a 12-year apprenticeship.

“I’m all about local,” she said. “I love the (El Dorado County) community so much and I love supporting the community.”

Wirgler’s training style revolves around not just training the horse, but the owner as well, with the belief the partnership between horse and rider is the most important thing.

“That’s why I put it in the (business) name, partnership

is the most important thing,” Wirgler said. “My goal in general is to help the horse community stay safe and enjoy their horses.”

Wirgler’s facility contains several stables and riding arenas

to service the dozens of horses that call her ranch home. Among those horses are the four client horses boarded at the ranch for what Wirlger describes as “horse boot camp,” where they are

worked out and trained every week day by Wirgler herself.

Other clients who opt to bring their horses to the Wirgler Horse Human Partnership can do hour-long private sessions on weekday afternoons or group sessions on weekends.

“The biggest thing is to teach a person is to read the signals a horse is giving, they have a language.” Wirgler said, “They’re talking to us all the time. The question is: do you have any idea what they’re saying?

“It’s normal for a horse to run, kick, bite and (do what they need to do) to survive and see another day. What is (comfortable) for a human rider? Don’t bite, don’t run, don’t kick, don’t go too fast; so we have to find that happy medium between their sense of security and survival and our sense of security and survival.”

The end goal for a Wirgler trained horse is selfsufficiency for the owner.

“My goal is for my clients to be able to go out on your own, to enjoy their horses safely without my guidance,” Wirgler said. “I want to get my clients to a point where they can have their horse in their backyard and not need me.” U

WHAT RABBIT OWNERS NEED TO KNOW

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease is a new disease that entered the western U.S. in 2020. It has been seen in both wild and domestic rabbits in 28 states, Canada and Mexico. Several cases have been seen in domestic rabbits in Sacramento County in the past few years, but has been more widespread in Southern California.

The disease is caused by the rabbit hemorrhagic disease type 1 or type 2 virus, which are classified as circovirus. Mortality is 70-100%. Rabbits who survive the disease can become carriers. Clinical signs can include lethargy, anorexia, congestion, watery eyes, bleeding from the eyes or nose, but most often sudden death is seen. The disease can be

contracted from contact with infected rabbits or through contaminated food or water.

Spread of the virus has been slowing due to vaccination and biosecurity in domestic rabbits, and natural slowing of spread in wild rabbits. The best way to keep your rabbit safe is to keep them indoors, carefully monitor their outdoor time and have them vaccinated if they spend considerable time outside or have any contact with other domestic or wild rabbits.

The current vaccine has been approved for emergency use and consists of two injections, three weeks apart, and then yearly afterwards. It is the only rabbit disease we

currently vaccinate for in the US.

Please give your exotic pet veterinarian a call if you are interested in vaccination for your

rabbits, have questions about their risk of infection or they are showing signs of the disease. There are other, more common causes of lethargy,

decreased appetite and congestion, but it is always best to get them checked out, as they may still need to be treated for those conditions.

Plan a lunch date with your best friend

For a dog-gone good time and something good to eat there are pet friendly restaurants to consider for yappy hour or just a nice outing with that special companion. Proper manners are always on the menu for both human and pet — no jumping on people or tabletops, no barking or growling and no begging or whining.

These El Dorado County eateries welcome well-behaved pets to their outdoor eating areas:

Moonraker Brewing Company

There’s plenty of outdoor space to have a great meal with your best friend by your side at Moonraker Brewing Company’s new brewhouse in Cameron

Park. Beer, wine and seltzer are available, and food offerings of salads, pizzas, sandwiches, tacos and more will soak it all up. Order a chicken or beef treat for your furever companion to enjoy while kicking back under a blue sky and the shade of oak trees. who take the outdoor stage Friday and Saturday nights.

Making Fleas Flee..

Imagine it is the dead of winter. e phone rings and it is your wife’s Aunt Polly from Minnesota. She wants to come and visit and stay at your house. A few days before her arrival you open up the guest bedroom, turn on the heat, vacuum the oors and open the curtains. e room is all set to go. e next day you walk into the room and suddenly your legs are covered with little, dark-colored jumping bugs.

Fleas!

Where did they come from and why are they here?

e reasons for the sudden emergence of eas in the dead of winter are determined by the unique life cycle of the ea. Fleas have complete metamorphoses. ey go from an egg to a larvae, to a pupae or cocoon, to an adult. is process from egg to adult can occur in as little as 23 days or take up to a year.

e ea life cycle begins when the female lays eggs after feeding. Adult eas must feed on blood before they can become capable of reproduction. e eggs are usually deposited on the host animal, which can be any warm blooded mammal including humans. e female ea bites the host animal and takes a blood meal. is blood meal is deposited on the host animal as fecal material. Eggs and fecal matter are easily dislodged from the host animal, usually where they spend the most time.

e eggs hatch in about two days to two weeks into larvae. Larvae must eat the dried blood to survive. e larvae go through several molts or instars and become pupae. Larvae will become pupae in as little as a week or may take up to several months. In the pupae stage, the adult ea will lie in wait until conditions are just right. Adult eas like vibration and movement. ey also need a warm environment (70- 85 degrees F) with humidity of around 70 percent before they will emerge.

As one can see, eas must have several conditions for them to be successful. ey need a host animal, eggs, fecal material, a place to grow such as your carpet, and the correct environmental conditions. Disruption of any one of these conditions can be the demise of eas in your own personal space. Simple vacuuming on a regular basis can remove fecal material and eggs and limit a ea population in your home.

Back to Aunt Polly’s visit and the occurrence of eas in the spare bedroom. You may have had a previous infestation in the rest of the house that may have been controlled by ea spray, vacuuming and treatment of the dog and cat. But that guest bedroom is seldom used, remains cold, and can be a perfect place for larvae and pupae to hang out and wait for the right conditions. ese right conditions occur when the room is opened up, heated and vacuumed, causing the dormant eas to emerge and jump on you (but hopefully not Aunt Polly).

If you should nd yourself with a sudden ea infestation, we at Koby recommend a ea treatment. Our ea treatments consist of treating the carpeting and surrounding areas with two separate but e ective products. One of these products is a growth regulator, which disrupts the ability of the larvae to molt and advance into the pupae stage. Growth regulators mimic hormones that are already present in the environment. Another product that we use is an adulticide, which will kill adult eas. Unfortunately, adulticides have very little e ect on eas in the pupae. We recommend vacuuming of carpets prior to and after a ea application as this will stimulate the adults to emerge and come in contact with the product. Treatment of the dog or cat for eas should be done around the same time as any treatment to your property. Not everyone has Aunt Polly, but many people will nd themselves with a ea problem.

Animal success stories

Over the years, many of UC Davis veterinary hospital’s patients have been featured in national and international news coverage. Their success stories were made possible by the dedicated teams of clinicians, staff and students who provide compassionate care on a daily basis.

IRISH STREETSINGER

In 2016, Thoroughbred Irish Streetsinger showed lameness while training. She became one of the first horses scanned using positron emission tomography (PET), an imaging technology pioneered at UC Davis. The PET scans picked up injuries not seen on other forms of diagnostic imaging, helping to better plan treatment and recovery procedures. By late 2017, Irish Streetsinger returned to racing, winning at Golden Gate Fields in 2018. Her journey was covered by Equine Chronicle, HorseTalk and other horse health publications.

MADONNA

In 2018, UC Davis veterinarians performed surgery on Madonna the koi to remove a softball- sized tumor from her abdomen. The tumor was nearly half the fish’s total body weight. Madonna recovered at the university for several weeks before returning to her home pond. Veterinary Practice News ran a feature article on the procedure, and the Times of San Diego published the news as part of a larger spread on fish surgeries.

VANILLA BEAN

In 2015, several UC Davis clinicians collaborated on an extremely rare heart surgery on Vanilla Bean. Blood flow

The case truly highlighted UC Davis’ collaborative and compassionate care, as well as the value of being treated at a large research university’s teaching hospital. The New York Times and CBS News took notice, as did dozens of local newspapers and television newscasts from around the country.

PICKLES

In 2017, Pickles the potbellied pig needed a blood transfusion to survive. His owner turned to the internet and found a 450-pound pig for sale, which she promptly bought and arranged for immediate transport to UC Davis. Following multiple transfusions and intensive care, Pickles survived. The

donor pig was named Tickles, and the story of “How Tickles Saved Pickles” (now a children’s book) went viral. A frenzy on social media, the story also became a national hit on CBS News.

KABANG

Kabang, a shepherd mix dog, was brought to UC Davis from the Philippines in October 2012 for surgery to repair massive facial wounds caused when her snout was torn from her face

after being hit by a motorcycle. Sources claim she ran into the motorcycle to save two children in her family. With insufficient local veterinary care to treat her extensive injuries, Kabang was brought to UC Davis, where it was also discovered that she had heartworm disease and a type of infectious cancer. Treatment for both was necessary before her facial wounds could be addressed. She stayed with local caregivers and was successfully treated at UC Davis until June 2013. Kabang’s story was a worldwide phenomenon, covered by more than 1,000 media outlets on six continents.

carrier and owner during a frantic evacuation. A week later, his owner saw his picture in a Facebook post from UC Davis veterinary school trying to identify owners of dozens of other injured cats that had been brought to the hospital for care. The Today Show featured a video of the joyful reunion between him and his owner. Their story was covered in the Washington Post, BuzzFeed News, the Huffington Post, CBS News, Yahoo News, and The Dodo among hundreds of other media outlets. Fortunately, Mayson recovered fully from burns to his paws.

CINDERS

Following California wildfires in 2017, UC Davis veterinarians started treating burned animals with a novel approach

pioneered by physicians in South America—covering their wounds with tilapia fish skin as a biological bandage. Collagen in the fish skin—sutured to an animal’s burns—hastens healing. Its first use on bears and mountain lions was covered by Reuters, ABC News, and NPR, prompting the team to be summoned to England in 2018 to treat a horse dubbed Cinderella or “Cinders” for short, whose face was burned by acid.

The story became national news on the BBC and dozens of other English media. The procedure would later be used to treat a dog in Alaska (2019), marsupials in Australia (2020), and a total of 13 species worldwide.

REGROWING BONES

Little more than a decade has passed since a collaborative research team at UC Davis pioneered the use of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) to regrow sections of canine jawbones due to trauma or removal of cancerous tumors. The team, comprised of veterinary surgeons and biomedical engineers, expanded the early technique and have now successfully regrown a full mandibular arch as well as areas of a leg bone. The following dogs represent four

of approximately 100 cases to date.

WHISKEY

In 2012, Whiskey was one of the first dogs in the world to have a section of his mandible regrown using bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) to stimulate new growth. The procedure, pioneered and exclusively performed at UC Davis, stimulates the remaining jawbone to grow new bone cells, eventually filling the entire removed section (due to injury or disease— cancer in Whiskey’s case) and integrating with the native bone. Whiskey was featured in the New York Times, as well as many veterinary publications and California newscasts.

FRANKIE

In 2012, a severely injured terrier was found by campers in the woods of Northern California. Upon arrival at UC Davis, veterinarians found three fractures in a paw, a gunshot wound fracture of his mandible, several gunshot pellets in his face, a healed injury to his cornea, and cataracts in both eyes. Dental surgeons used BMP to regrow his nearly shattered jaw. After cataract surgery restored his sight and his other injuries healed, the

lucky pup found a new forever home and was named Frankie. His long journey back to health was featured in an extensive Los Angeles Times feature on the UC Davis veterinary hospital.

HOSHI

In 2013, Hoshi the collie traveled from Montana to UC Davis to become one of the first dogs to have a full mandible arch regrown using the BMP procedure. Previous success with BMP allowed for the procedure to be expanded to more than just small sections of the jawbone. Cancer caused most of Hoshi’s lower jawbone to be removed, but since there was still healthy bone on each far side, the entire arch was regrown. Hoshi’s hometown veterinarian was delighted to read her story in Veterinary Practice News.

ETHEL

Following the success of BMP to regrow jawbones, the procedure was used on Ethel’s broken leg in 2018. The 2-year-old Yorkshire terrier severely fractured her right ulna and radius, and several surgeries failed to heal the injuries. While UC Davis surgeons estimated there was only a 1% chance to save the leg, the BMP procedure worked, and Ethel walked again after months in the hospital. DVM360 chronicled Ethel’s case, stating BMP “works wonders.” U

2) Raisins (toxic)

3) Chocolate (toxic)

Our dental philosophy is different. At Aloha Family Dental, we perform dentistry that protects and repairs your teeth, but most importantly, our focus is to prevent the disease and damage that makes repairs necessary.

At Aloha Family Dental our focus is not to x problems as they develop, but to prevent them. We want to keep your teeth in the healthy, natural state they were born to be in. Our goal is for you to have a healthy smile for life. Everyone wants to have a smile they’re con dent in.
