El Dorado Savings Bank is celebrating 65 years in business.

T
he financial institution currently operates 31 full-service branches in California and four in Nevada. El Dorado Savings Bank opened for business in Placerville in January of 1958 to offer competitive savings programs to local residents while promoting home ownership through construction, purchase and refinance loans.
In expanding over the years, El Dorado Savings Bank has developed opportunities to provide more convenient banking, including ATMs, telephone, internet and mobile banking, and now also offers an online loan application option, although loan officers are always available for personal assistance. The underlying commitment that has distinguished El Dorado from the com-
petition during its 65 years is the insistence of the board of directors and management that each employee of the bank provide personal, efficient and friendly service to all existing and prospective customers. The combination of convenient branch locations, employees dedicated to customer service and a variety of products, services and delivery channels to meet the needs of diverse customers
and communities has allowed El Dorado Savings Bank to grow its operations, while continually recording consistent growth and profitability. El Dorado Savings Bank received the 2020 Business Hall of Fame Award from the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. In March 2023, Bauer Financial Reports of Coral Gables, Fla., awarded El Dorado Savings
Bank its highest 5-star rating as one of the safest banks in the U.S. for the 119th consecutive quarter dating back to 1993, and The Findley Reports in May 2022 awarded El Dorado its “Premier Performance” rating. The local bank has also earned numerous Mountain Democrat and Village Life readers’ choice awards over the years.

W
hat do you get when you combine an established business with a long time employee who worked his way up to eventually purchase the establishment?
Camino Power Tool Bill Bratcher, 61, said the business, located at 5436 Pony Express Trail in Camino, originally opened in 1971. He worked at the store for 30 years before purchasing it in 2013. For Bratcher, working at and owning the store was a logical choice. His interest in mechanics started early on in his life. “As young as I can remember my uncles all worked on their own equipment and I was just intrigued by it,” he said. “I always thought it would be kind of cool to work on engines and now I’ve
CAMINO POWER TOOL 5436 Pony Express Trail, Camino (530) 644-3038 caminopowertool 1p.stihldealer.net been working on them for over 50 years. I’ve got 40 years experience just in the two cycle power equipment business itself. It’s just been a passion of mine.” And he found the right place to do it because not only does the store carry snow blowers, chainsaws and other power tools, customers can also bring equipment in to be repaired. Bratcher said Camino Power Tool is well known in the community but he is concerned about the stores future following 2022 legislation that calls for

According to the California Air Resources Board, AB 1346, “prohibits engine exhaust and emissions from small off-road engines (SORE), such as lawn mowers, portable generators, and the profusion of other equipment utilizing small gasoline engines
for power, by July 1, 2022.” “It’s going to put a real hard road to hoe here on our business,” he said. “Most of the equipment we sell helps get us through these tough times and that’ll be gone soon.” He added the store will still provide repair services but he relies
on the winter sales of equipment such as snow blowers, generators and other options that help tide the business over until spring. “Now that money stream will be gone in the future,” he said. “It’s disappointing that there’s no demographics supplied to this big change over. It’s
one-size fits all and everybody fits into t he same pants.” When looking at the clientele who patronize the store, Bratcher said he prides himself and his employees on the good quality work that they have done over the years. ■ See CAMINO POWER

staple of the Pollock Pines community celebrates its 80th birthday this year. 50 Grand Restaurant and Bar has its roots dating back to the 1930s and the 50 Grand moniker — reportedly coming from the idea it would be a ‘grand” place to eat along Highway 50 — has endured since 1943 despite nine name changes over the years. The restaurant continues to chug along under the ownership of husband and wife duo and 25-year El Dorado County residents Kim and Jim McCarthy, who bought the restaurant in late 2018 and have overhauled the interior, from new windows in the front to heated

They took advantage of the pandemic closure to truly revive the local favorite, officially welcoming back eager and hungry diners in fall 2022. “We’ve been active in the community for a long time, helping in the schools, volunteering with soccer, baseball, all of that,”
Kim said. “But we never expected we’d buy a restaurant ... but it has grown up into what we wanted it to be.” The restaurant features a carefully curated aesthetic under the McCarthys’ ownership. Everything pays homage to the county it has called home for 80 years. Photos of the area from the mid-20th century decorate the walls along side vintage

he 50-year success of Madroña Vineyards traces back to the adage that it takes a village to get things done. According to family matriarch Leslie Bush a village of family, friends and community joined her and her late husband Dick to plant wine grapes on the Dart Ranch in Camino in 1973. The original plan was to buy some acreage and build a family home but the property turned out to be perfect for wine grapes so Dick the engineer and Leslie the school teacher became vintners. Children — Paul, 7; Carolyn, 9; Diane, 13; and David, 15 at the time were there for the adventure. The former grazing land featured a beautiful madrone tree that would lend itself to not only the name but be part of the branding. Then Ag Commissioner Edio Delfino and University of California, Davis, Ag Adviser Dick Bethell suggested to Dick that it might be a good idea to plant an experimental acre of wine grapes to see how they would do at such a high elevation. “Dad was adventurous and had a business mind so planting just an acre didn’t fit in his
thinking,” son and now winery proprietor Paul Bush said. The question was what grapes to plant. In 1973 California was emerging as a wine grape growing region and there was a big demand for rootstock resistant to phylloxera, a bug that lives in the soil and can destroy a vineyard. There was a high demand for the resistant rootstock but Dick came up with an alternative. “We had some Thompson seedless grapes growing on the property. My dad pulled a few of the old vines and had them tested. They showed no sign of phylloxera so it was decided to plant
clean, young grapevines,” Paul said. The popular grapes at the time — chardonnay, riesling, merlot,

For half a century, the MORE team has helped adults with developmental disabilities thrive in El Dorado County.
Happy 50th: MORE Andrew Vonderschmitt Mountain Democrat correspondent
M
other Lode Rehabilitation Enterprises Inc. started serving intellectually and developmentally disabled adults in a fruit shed on Mosquito Road in a time when this population was generally “excluded from the rest of the community,” according to 40-year employee and current Executive Director Susie Davies. Before that time institutions were built to confine, punish and devalue this community, she explained.
MORE opened its doors to eight clients served by three staff members in 1973. They all shared a vision to change the prevailing negative attitude. Over the next 15 years, they moved through several unexpected locations, eventually landing in an old bowling alley. In 1988 the organization found its home at 399 Placerville Drive where the dedicated team continues to serve the vision of “full inclusion” to this day. Expanded services, staff and facilities followed accreditation. Much of which was supported by the community through
monetary and in-kind donations. Today MORE serves more than 70 clients with 30-plus people on staff in a newly reimagined building. Services include life skills training, one-on-one counseling, creative arts courses, gardening and agriculture in a new garden and greenhouse facility, a brand new media arts lab with a sound booth and audio/visual capabilities, a theater arts program, culinary arts and independent living support among other things. Community partnerships and community integration are important parts of the
overall vision and mission of MORE. Davies, deflecting credit from herself, said the secret to MORE’s success lies with the many people who have come before her and all those who have made the organization what it is today. “In fact, I can attest
that everyone connected with MORE believes in the vision of ‘Full Inclusion for All People,’” she said, explaining that this unified vision should receive at least partial credit for the many successes of the nonprofit organization.

ularte’s Pizza and Deli has been a go-to favorite for county residents for decades, first opening its doors on Placerville Drive in 1983. The familyoperated restaurant is now located on Pleasant Valley Road in Diamond Springs, but the change in location certainly didn’t result in a change in quality. The family-friendly deli serves delicious fare for a fair price.
The pizza is the best according to many diners. The sandwiches, salads and pastas also get five stars. Each day of the week features an appetizing special. There is outdoor seating and for those looking for a great meal to bring home Gularte’s has the answer. very fall thousands of people venture to El Dorado County to partake in the scenery, visit orchards, enjoy great fruit pies and other delectable goodies and peruse various arts and crafts. Hooverville Orchards is one of those popular stops and Rachel Detweiler and her husband Del, along with other family members, work together to keep the family legacy alive and well. “I retired from the post office about 10 years ago,” she said. “My husband and I purchased the orchard in 2014 from my
mother and my siblings because I wanted to keep it in the family before she passed. I love this orchard. It’s beautiful.” Hooverville Orchards, located at 1101 Wallace Road, Placerville, offers visitors many fruit varieties including cherries, peaches, nectarines, plumbs, pluots, Asian pears, European pears, blueberries, blackberries, boysenberries, raspberries, apples, oranges and other citrus fruits. I’ll be 65 so that’s it for me.” She added that she does love the orchard and having grown up there, she even planted a lot of the trees. “It’s just a great sense of pride,” she said. Rachel said a typical day for her starts at 3 a.m. and on Tuesdays, she might bake or work on baked goods like breads or streusel bars. Wednesday is a baking day and Thursday, she does all her prep for her weekend baking which starts on Friday. She then continues baking on Saturday and Sunday. “On the average throughout the year I would say I work from six
hours to 14 hours a day,” she said. “It just depends on the time of year.” Rachel added that mother nature also plays a role in what is baked and sold in the shop. “This year all of our citrus froze,” she said. “So we don’t have our mandarin crop.” She added the business has a very loyal customer base and she feels that the pies are good. She utilizes the fruits that are grown on the property. It’s also a family run operation. “It’s a good product and my husband is a great front person,” she said. part of the zinfandel in 1983. “When the fruit started ripening in 1977, my dad would take the small harvest to Greg Boeger at Boeger Winery down the road,” Paul said. “Greg mentored my dad on winemaking and helped with many aspects around the vineyard.” In 1978 Dick decided to process the crop again using the knowledge and facilities at Boeger. The success of Madroña is due to many. “We were so fortunate to have so much help from other early wine pioneers.” Leslie said. The MacCreadys, Russells, Battjes,
Fitzpatricks and others were part of that early wine village. In 1978 the first bottle of Madroña Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon came off the line. Paul joined his dad at the winery following college and travel in the ’90’s. “I really enjoyed working at the winery and spending time with my dad,” Paul said. While pouring wine at events Paul met Maggie Clark, who was working for Sierra Vista Vineyards and Winery and pouring at the same events. Paul and Maggie were married and her office skills added to the success of the
vineyard and was appreciated by Leslie, who had been handling the books. Dick was also ready to pass the baton. In 2001 the business was restructured with Paul and Maggie at the helm and to this day Madroña wines continue the legacy started in 1973. Sister winery Rucksack Cellars opened in 2013. “My dad was there for me and I appreciate all that he accomplished and shared with me,” Paul said. “My mom still is a part of everything and is so amazing. Plus there is the wonderful community that has been here for us. We are very thankful for everything.”

Happy 75th: Naturwood Home Furnishings 75 years

amily owned and operated, Naturwood Home Furnishings started as a tiny furniture store opened by founder John A. Keyes on Stockton Boulevard in Sacramento 75 years ago. Keyes knew customers wanted their homes to reflect their personal style and he strived to offer as many choices as possible. Today the 87,000-square-foot showroom in Rancho Cordova showcases one of the largest and best selection of home furnishings in Northern California — stuffed full of the most exciting styles and the best name brands like Stickley, Flexsteel, Rowe, Simply Amish, Stanton, Martin, Magnussen, Serta, plus more than 50 other fine manufacturers. “We have a huge selection and a very large selection of made in the USA furniture,” said Michelle Benjamin, Naturwood’s director of advertising. Keyes envisioned a home furnishings company that provides the absolute best in value, selection and service. It’s that sentiment that continues today with fifth generation Naturwood President Lisa Keyes Chord at the helm and her team of courteous and knowledgeable staff ready to help customers with their specific home furnishing needs, from tracking down

Naturwood also has a large selection of decorator accessories. Naturwood also offers in-home design services. Design consultants will help clients discover a client’s style, from creating the perfect environment to doing a full room plan. The furniture stores affordable prices and distinctive looks make it possible for consultants and clients to create a wonderful and inviting environment on any budget. “And we still do business the way we started doing business — treating customers like family,” said marketing consultant Gary Benjamin. It’s a business model that has kept families coming back for generations. Gary said the staff loves hearing stories about that first dining table grandma bought way back when and how many times a favorite couch has changed hands among family members. If furniture could talk … imagine the stories it would have to share.

orty years of success and a successor in line, Doug Veerkamp General Engineering is set to continue for a long time. When he left high school, Doug Veerkamp tried college for six months and realized the college route was not for him. Following college he was connected with Joe and Gordon Vicini and worked alongside them for eight years and learned the business. After that time with the Vicini’s, Veerkamp and his wife Lori opened their own business on May 1, 1983. They have been in business since then and still have the first employee they hired working for them to this day. Forty years is a long time to withstand, and Veerkamp attributes the efforts of everyone to the reason the company has never went under and says that is the true secret to having a successful business for a long time. “Employees can
DOUG VEERKAMP GENERAL ENGINEERING 3701 Trade Way, Cameron Park (530) 676-0825 dougveerkamp.com make or break you, you are nothing without your people,” Veerkamp said. “A business like ours is a dime a dozen so we have to sell our service, honesty and integrity. If you have that, people will seek you out.” The company does a lot of residential, city, county and state work, and Veerkamp said that they have been blessed with consistent clients and the ones that come along at the right time. “I don’t know how to say it without sounding like I am bragging, but my wife and I have been blessed to be smart in business as far as finances, so we were never really in financial problems,”

Doug and Lori Veerkamp smile in their hard hats. Veerkamp said. “We have been very blessed through 40 years to have everything fall into place.” Another key part to
businesses like these having the longevity that they do is having someone you trust willing to take the reigns and keep it
going. Veerkamp is looking to retire and said that his son Matt will be taking over for him. Matt Veerkamp is
currently the vice president of the company and his father Doug said that the change is coming sooner rather than later.

Blain Stumpf started his hauling business with one dump truck 40 years ago. Now he has a full fleet and an unbeatable reputation.
Happy 40th: Blain Stumpf Rock, Sand & Gravel Jeff Little DDS 40 General and Cosmetic Dentistry years
Noel Stack Managing editor
“I started with one dump truck in 1983,” Blain Stumpf recalled. “It was just me out delivering rock.” Forty years later Blain Stumpf Rock, Sand & Gravel has replaced that 1964 Autocar with a fleet of Kenworth trucks serving El Dorado County and beyond. Stumpf credits his success to the opportunities sent his way — a family friend got him in the business and Blain’s wife Marcia also comes from a family dedicated to hauling via dump truck. He also heaps praise on his drivers and support staff (about 30 total) who have years of experience in the industry and whose quick thinking make them great problem solvers out in the field. The Placerville-based business moved into its current yard off Pleasant Valley Road 30 years ago and has expanded services to meet customers’ needs. Blain Stumpf Rock,
Sand & Gravel provides construction aggregates and contract hauling by the hour, ton or load as well as temporary fence rental, soil blends, stabilized decomposed granite and other landscape materials, bio-solids handling and disposal and spoils, waste and demolition handling and disposal. The yard also stocks culvert pipe in both corrugated steel and high density polyethylene. The company is also know for its generosity. Community involvement is routine for Stumpf and his staff, whether it’s delivering snow to local schools and daycares — much to the delight of the little ones — or supporting local Eagle Scouts, 4-H animal husbandry, Little League and other worthy organizations. Though not on the road himself anymore, Blain said he gets a lot of satisfaction from seeing a job through — from the order to the delivery. He also shared that the people, both employees and customers, make the job enjoy-

We will definitely recommend Nail It Roofing to our friends and neighbors.” “Most of our business is generated from customer referral, which says a lot about their satisfaction and loyalty,” Aaron said. Happy 35th: Lofty Lou’s is Thirty, Nail Perfection Flirty and Thriving!
I
n October 1993, amidst the quaint charm of 585 Main St., Lou Andersen fulfilled her dream by opening Lofty Lou’s Yarn Shop in her Victorian house. A haven for local fiber enthusiasts, the shop faced an uncertain future when Lou’s husband fell ill. However, the tight-knit community rallied together, with local businesses, employees, and Lou’s students pooling resources to acquire the shop. Since 2014, Lofty Lou’s has thrived as a community-run establishment with approximately 21 owners. Having outgrown its original Victorian location next to Sweetie Pie’s, the shop now proudly stands in a spacious spot on 263 Main St., doubling its capacity for an extensive array of yarn, fiber and notions and classes. From crocheting and knitting to spinning and weaving, Lofty Lou’s boasts a team of amazing instructors ready to guide and assist crafters of all skill levels, from novices to seasoned experts. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Placerville community for their unwavering support over the years, ensuring that Lofty Lou’s remains a beloved hub for creativity and connection. If you are interested in learning more about becoming an owner, or classes we offer, stop by the store, or give us a call at 530.642.2270.

Nail Perfection offers just that — beautiful nails on hands and feet courtesy of owner Susan Jones and Angela Storey. Clients get the full service when they come in for manicures, pedicures, gel sets, scrubs and much more. Jones credits her success to the salon’s homey atmosphere, a sentiment echoed by longtime client Page Patterson. “It’s personal, like a family,” Patterson shared as Storey worked on her maincure, “and they do an excellent job.” Jones has been in the beauty business for 35 years and said she really appreciates her loyal customers who keep coming back year after year. Her skills, as well as Angela’s, have earned Nail Perfection many
Mountain Democrat Readers’ Choice awards over the years — as well as rave reviews. “Susan and Angela are amazing,” noted client Dani M., who gave Nail Perfection five out of five stars. “Best place to get your nails done.” Gunter H., another very satisfied customer, raved, “This is the place to go. As the name suggests … you can’t beat it.” “Susan, the owner, is a lovely and personable person,” added Cyndi H. “She does excellent work. Mom’s nails are always perfect. If I lived anywhere near Placerville I’d have her do my nails.” Born and raised in Placerville, Jones began doing nails in her sister’s hair salon but quickly ventured out on her own, building her business in

We recommend them highly,” customers Carol and Tim C. shared. The company’s reputation has also earned it many large contracts with local school districts and public agencies. And to thank the community for its support over the last 45 years, Conforti gives back, participating in the El Dorado County Junior Livestock Auction during the fair and giving to other worthy causes and organizations. Because plumbing issues can spring up any time, Conforti provides critical emergency service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
