JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas — Total Force airmen and guardians now have the capability to learn anywhere, anytime, and on any device, with the help of a myLearning username and password.

Air Education and Training Command officials announced the addition of the new identity access management tool to the learning system, which will give personnel with a Common Access Card the ability to create a username and password to log in to myLearning and myTraining on personally owned devices (e.g., phone, tablet, laptop, etc.), with the aid of a third-party authentication application.

The program launched Thursday.

This also allows units that have missions outside the office environment, such as maintenance, security forces, or logistics readiness, to complete their training away from a government-owned computer.

In order to create a username and password, users must first log in to myLearning with their CAC on the government network. Airmen can use a mobile device with the security authentication applications FreeOTP or Google Authenticator, which are both free and available on your device’s app store.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) — Brig. Gen. Charles E. McGee, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen and an Air Force legend, was laid to rest June 17 at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

Along with his family and distinguished guests, many senior military leaders attended the service to bid a final farewell to the historic figure.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Mark A. Milley, Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr. all participated in the service.

McGee died Jan. 16 at the age of 102.

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — The Phoenix Spark lab hosted an industry day at the Gonge Innovation Lab for external companies to pitch ideas to the base populations through presentations June 17.

The event was designed to bring the latest innovations in the private sector and bring them to Team Travis to develop new ways to win the next fight.

According to U.S. Air Force Capt. Wes Williams, Phoenix Spark deputy director, it is important to develop new ways to solve problems and discover

greater capabilities for airmen.

“If we are going to beat our peer threats, we need both private companies and creative airmen to work together and accomplish that goal,” said Williams.

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — One month ago, on May 18, Travis Air Force Base and the city of Fairfield entered into a blanket intergovernmental support agreement.

An intergovernmental support agreement is an agreement between Department of Defense installations and state or local government that serves the best interests of both parties and improves installation support services and mission readiness.

The nonbinding letter of intent for the intergovernmental support agreement revealed the city’s position to offer services to Travis Air Force Base through the use of municipal employees and subcontractors in a timely manner.

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFNS) — The Air Force Materiel Command has released $8 million in support of multiple innovation initiatives across the enterprise.

The funded projects support ongoing AFMC “We Need” efforts with an emphasis on technology, innovation, talent management and infrastructure across the mission.

“All of the projects that were funded have a direct impact on our airmen,” said Lindsay McNeely of the Air Force Materiel Command Commanders Accelerated Initiatives, or CDX,

team. “For projects that were submitted but not funded this round, our CDX teams are continuing to work with the innovators and intrapreneurs to help them further develop the ideas and find resources to support.”

Air Force Materiel Command has since 2020 designated funds that CDX manages in support of improvement and innovation. In 2020, nearly $20 million was allocated in 2020 in support of specific AFMC “We Need” efforts. The command designated $10 million of funding in 2021 and the same amount this year in support of efforts to accelerate change across the mission.

Hearing and vision are important to everyone, including active duty service members. They must be alert at all times to their surroundings and potential dangers.

Fortunately, there are resources available from the Defense Heath Agency’s Hearing Center of Excellence and Vision Center of Excellence to keep your eyes and ears sharp.

Experts from these centers help advance research to diagnose and treat diseases and conditions that affect military personnel and their families.

Hearing Loss Limiting the risk of hearing loss is critical for a service member’s health and readiness. Department of Defense policy requires the military services to each manage a comprehensive hearing conservation program to reduce hazardous occupational and operational noise exposures.

The Army and Marine Corps provide annual hearing tests to all service members, while the Air Force and Navy conduct annual testing on service members who are routinely exposed to hazardous noise.

Noise-induced hearing loss, or NIHL, is a common medical concern reported to military hospitals and clinics, according to Air Force Lt. Col. April Taylor, an audiologist and a deputy branch chief of the Hearing Center of Excellence, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

“NIHL is caused by exposure to harmful noise, which can damage the delicate hair cells in the inner ear. Once damaged, these microscopic hair cells . . . cannot repair themselves,” she said.

NIHL can occur gradually over time or with one single exposure. Repeated exposure to loud sounds over a period of time

can cause permanent inner ear damage.

“The consequences of NIHL can be substantial in combat and non-combat situations, but it can also affect your personal life,” Taylor said. Hearing and communication are fundamental to: n Relating with family and friends. n Developing relationships. n Joining in team and community activities. n Appreciating life events. n While noise is the number one workplace hazard for service members and civilian employees, hearing problems overall are declining in the military, according to a 2020 report.

A review of the data in 2022 has shown a plateau in the

decline of hearing loss, but the trend has not continued downward, said audiologist Dr. Theresa Schulz, HCE Prevention and Surveillance section chief.

Hearing Loss Resources Here are some resources to prevent, diagnose, or treat hearing loss. n Concussion (mild TBI) is one way you may experience both hearing and vision loss. n Tinnitus is deemed “bothersome” and can impact your everyday life. Tinnitus is often experienced as a ringing in the ears. n Protecting your hearing either on-duty or off-duty is crucial to readiness.

n Mobile boothless hearing test units are being piloted by HCE and the U.S. Army.

Eye Injuries and Vision Trauma Two common types of eye injuries include chemical exposure and burns, and blunt trauma such as falls, accidents, or recreational injuries.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine dominated the NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels, but the ministers – including Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III – also considered a range of actions and programs in preparation for the Madrid Summit on June 29.

Not since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 has there been as serious a threat as Russia’s unprovoked invasion of neighboring Ukraine, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said yesterday at a press conference.

This drastically changed the security environment in Europe and the globe, he said.

“We must set out NATO’s response for the longer term,” he said. “At the summit, we will take decisions to make NATO even stronger and more agile in a world that is more dangerous and more competitive. I am

confident that the Madrid Summit will be a transformative summit.”

The secretary general said there are a number of areas where the heads of state and government will make decisions in Madrid. He expects the 30 NATO nations to significantly beef up deterrence and defense.

“We will also decide on a new NATO strategic concept, setting out our position on Russia, on emerging challenges, and – for the first time – on China,” he said. “And in this context, I welcome that the leaders of our Asia-Pacific partners will take part in our summit for the first time.”

The Indo-Pacific nations that will attend the summit are Australia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea.

The leaders will also look at better burden-sharing and resourcing for the alliance.

This theme “aligns closely with our priorities,” said Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen H. Hicks, who spoke remotely at the conference.

Small businesses are indispensable in helping DoD defend the nation, she said.

Among those encouraged to attend the conference include DoD small business professionals, program managers and contracting officers.

Small businesses provide critical parts for weapons and systems platforms and develop innovative technologies so DoD can maintain its battlefield advantage, Hicks added, noting that small businesses generate 16 times more patents than larger firms.

“Their smaller size gives them an

ability to rapidly experiment and implement change,” Hicks said. To maintain its technological and military advantage, the U.S. needs to out-innovate competitors and any would-be adversary. Unfortunately, the number of small businesses in the Defense Industrial Base has declined by over 40% in the last decade, Hicks said.

“We know that working with DoD as a smaller firm isn’t easy,” she added.

Small businesses don’t always have the resources to navigate complicated compliance practices, which can discourage them from working with the department, she said.

Reducing these barriers and creating more opportunities for small businesses will allow the department to expand, innovate, and diversify, increasing the warfighters’ advantage, strengthening supply chains, increasing competition in the marketplace, and growing the U.S. economy, she said.

The department is also ensuring Procurement Technical Assistance Centers are better integrated into DoD’s broader small

DoD is also providing tools and technologies that the acquisition workforce needs to perform more effective market research, she said.

The virtual conference, which aims to provide attendees with insights into the current state of competition and systemic challenges to expanding competition while explaining the positive actions that DoD is taking to broaden its competitive base, will continue through June 23.
