“One of my personal take aways from my first flight in my new career field is witness ing how these trainings support growth on the road, enhance communication and draw the crew closer to become one team, one fight when it comes to rapid global mobility,” Hopkins said.

Air Force seeks mediators to help with conflict resolution
“Conflictplaying.management seems like a simple skill; but in prac tice, it’s challenging to do well,” Mlinaz said. “It should be as pro fessional and comfortable as it can be, and this training only en hances the skills of our media tors in the field.”
AIR FORCE4 TRAVIS TAILWIND September 16, 2022

After advanced course com pletion, mediators participate in a mentorship program for six months where they meet to comediate with Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service media tors to continue sharpening their skills. Those mediators may then train and assist other inexperi enced mediators throughout the department.“Nomatter which installation you are assigned to – Air Force or Space Force – if you have some sort of issue and think you can benefit from a neutral par ty to have a conversation, you can reach out and get the asset,” Mlinaz said.
Don Satterlee, B-1 Bomb er Division chief for operations and veteran mediator, offers this advice to those considering be coming a mediator: “First, check your bias, hone your listening skills and hone your patience. The mediation process can take anywhere from a couple of hours to several months.”
Mediation provides airmen, guardians and civil servants an alternative solution to litigation for workplace conflicts. Both parties can come together with resolution neutrals who can as sist them in breaking down the issue.“Mediation looks at improv ing the workplace relationship going forward,” said Kimberly A. Mlinaz, Negotiation and Dis pute Resolution program direc tor. “While litigation primarily focuses on the specific instance, it does not address any under lying problems or the relation ship as a whole. When you take a workplace complaint to litiga tion, both parties lose control of theElliotoutcome.”Moore, Special Oper ations Command Equal Oppor tunity functional manager and veteran mediator, describes mediation as a place where disput ing parties can feel empowered.
Formal training is required to become a mediator for the De partment of the Air Force. Em ployees must complete a Depart ment of the Air Force-sponsored basic mediation course and are asked to co-mediate three me diations with Department of the Air Force mediators before they can mediate for Department of the Air Force independently. The department requires medi ators to attend eight-hours of re fresher training annually to keep their skills sharp.
ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) — The Department of the Air Force needs mediators for conflict res olution, and you can help.
“Mediation helps people to know they can agree to dis agree, agreeably,” Moore said. “They can come to the table and talk with one another instead of at one another. When they can come together to see the oth er person’s point of view, who knows? They may be able to re solve the conflict and become the best of Describedfriends.”as “guardrails,” mediators must remain neutral to create a safe and trusted envi ronment where open discussions can take place.
For Department of the Air Force’s more experienced medi ators, U.S. Air and Space Forces partnered with the Federal Me diation and Conciliation Service, a federal agency with a conflict management mission, for their Advanced Mediation Course Aug. 22-31 in Washington, D.C. This hybrid training allowed De partment of the Air Force mediators to take part in high-emo tion exercises, technology use and questioning techniques. The course consisted of virtual train ing as well as in-person, inten sive role
Student mediators, Gary Ratcliffe, Master Sgt. Lesli Pape and Donald Satterlee, role play during a mock mediation scenario of the Advanced Mediation course held in Washington, D.C., Aug. 31. During Covid-19, air advisers realized the importance of creating ways for members to maintain and increase their language abilities without the chance of traveling or in-per son learning. For them, the Oculus virtual reality system has been an answer to that problem.

The 818th Mobility Support Advisory Squadron airmen travel to roughly 20 different countries in Africa through out the year on a variety of relationship-building and knowl edge-sharing missions. These missions require that they be able to communicate in the local language, which is usually French or English.
“The point of this VR software is to prepare air advisers for complicated situations they may face on a mission in a foreign language, in this case French,” said U.S Air Force Tech. Sgt. Guillaume Allardice, 818th Mobility Support Ad visory Squadron air adviser. “The reason we do this in vir tual reality is because, there is never enough cadre to run each individual through practice scenarios.”

But August revenue figures from the Min istry of Finance signaled a lon ger-term problem, as Moscow gradually loses its most import energy market, in Europe, and must accept discounted prices in Asia.Russia had reduced gas sup plies to Europe via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline in recent months and finally cut supplies this month, in moves designed to tighten pressure on Europe and

“The last few months have been extremely difficult for you. Therefore, I am asking you: Take care of yourself; you are the most precious we have,” he said. The visit from Zelensky, appearing in army fatigues and standing in front of a burned building with the windows blown out, was one of his many com bat-zone trips that have provided a contrast between the youthful Ukrainian leader and the aging Russian president, Vladimir Pu tin, who calls the war a “special military operation” and has not visited his soldiers in the field.
European Commission Presi dent Ursula von der Leyen con demned Russia during her State of the European Union Speech on Wednesday for “actively ma nipulating our energy market.”
“They prefer to flare the gas than to deliver it,” von der Ley en said. “This market is not func tioning anymore,” she added, warning that Europe faces tough months ahead as a result.

Zelensky visits liberated Izyum as Ukraine seeks to keep Russia on the run
Ukrainian President Volody myr Zelensky made a bold vis it on Wednesday to the recent ly liberated city of Izyum, in Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv re gion, where he participated in a flag-raising ceremony to mark the nation’s most important mili tary victory since Russian invad ers were repelled from the sub urbs of Kyiv in late March.
Von der Leyen insisted that Russia’s financial sector was “on life-support” thanks to sanctions

struggling in Ukraine, Moscow’s finances are coming under sim ilar intensifying pressure. Gov ernment financial data released on Wednesday showed a dramat ic drop in oil and gas revenue in August because of sanctions and lower sales of energy to Europe.

Western military and intelli gence analysts say Russia’s forc es appear to be severely deplet ed, largely incapable of offensive operations to retake ground, and potentially vulnerable to further attacks. Ukraine’s military, in turn, seems intent on pressing its counteroffensive in the east and the“Wesouth.thank all of you for lib erating our state from the ene my - from the terrorists of the Russian Federation and from the traitors who betrayed our state with the bills of artificial repub lics,” Zelensky said, addressing Ukrainian soldiers.
Zelensky said Tuesday that Ukraine had recaptured just over 3,0oo square miles during offensives in the Kharkiv and Kherson regions. Zelensky’s pre cise territorial claims could not be verified, but the Russian De fense Ministry has acknowl edged a major retreat, which it called a decision to “regroup.”
The swift and remarkably successful counteroffensive that liberated Izyum, and towns and villages throughout the Kharkiv region, has proved to be both a crucial military victory as well as a psychological triumph, lift ing national spirits, reinforcing Ukraine’s international support and sparking calls for addition al weapons and equipment, in hopes of capitalizing on what seems to be a turning point in the nearly seven-month war.

Republican senators are urging the Biden administration to move more quickly to spend funds authorized to blunt the global toll of the war in Ukraine, sin gling out the delivery of U.S. humanitarian aid as a major bottleneck.
“We are worried . . . that the American people’s generosity is not being proper ly and swiftly used to help Ukraine,” the senators said in a Sept. 9 letter to USAID Administrator Samantha Power. “These extraordinary Congressional appropria tions must be quickly and effectively mo bilized to address the unfolding crisis.”
The spokesperson said that USAID had decided to hold back some mon ey into 2023 to ensure continued funding and make sure that, if additional supple mental funds are not provided again, the agency has the resources to help those in need.“This will be a long-term crisis,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “We have to be prudent in our planning to en sure that we have enough funding to ad dress emergency needs over at least the next six months.”
They said requests for USAID to work through a more diversified group of aid organizations and accelerate food aid deliveries had not been adequately an swered. After the conflict erupted, Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian grain exports and spiraling inflation intensified food insecurity worldwide, with particular problems in places including the Horn of Africa. A Turkish-brokered deal to resume grain exports in July has provided some relief.

On Tuesday, a USAID spokesperson, speaking on the condition of anonym ity under rules set by the agency, said the United States had provided almost $7.6 billion in global food security aid since the war began and was working to distribute a major “scale up” of aid levels in recent months.
The lawmakers requested that USAID provide a detailed plan for spend ing the remaining money, asking that no more than a quarter of funds allotted for Ukraine be held over for the subsequent year. They also asked USAID for a staff ing plan for contracting officers to match workloads to their staff.
Nine senators, including the rank ing Republicans on the chamber’s For eign Relations and Judiciary committees, urged the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to spend humani tarian aid funds totaling $7 billion allocat ed in two aid packages related to the war in Ukraine.Seeking to assist Kyiv following Rus sian President Vladimir Putin’s Feb. 24 invasion and mitigate the global effects of the war, Congress has passed sever al large packages including funds for de fense, trade and humanitarian activities,
