Faced with opposition regarding the proposed development of the old El Dorado Hills executive golf course, Parker Development Company’s Director of Government Relations Kirk Bone surprised the standing-room only crowd at District Church Jan. 13. “We are open to evaluating alternatives to what’s in front of you this evening, including acquisition of the land,” Bone offered at the El Dorado County Planning Commission meeting. “If you can set up meetn

An El Dorado County supervisor candidate has been caught on camera apparently sabotaging one of his opponents. Ray Nutting, a former District 2 El Dorado County supervisor once again running for that seat, admitted Wednesday to taking a fellow candidate’s political literature from a Cameron Park home’s front door and replacing it with his own. (Video available on VillageLife.com) The campaign brochure belongs to Ken Pimlott, a former Cal Fire chief who’s also running for the District 2 seat. Nutting was caught by home security footage and when contacted by Village Life Wednesday morning he confessed to making “a silly mistake.” “I’ve been walking hundreds and hundreds of homes,” he said. “It was the first campaign literature I saw and I was curious. I had not seen any before. It was very wrong Residents unhappy with Parker Development’s proposal to build homes on the old golf course painted the rocks to voice their dissent.

t was a trip to the Boston Marathon that inspired Silva Valley Elementary School fourth-grader Giuliana Martino. “I said ‘Mom, I want to be a runner.’” Now this 9-year-old is taking cross-country to an all new level. Described by mom Jodie as a “barefoot hippie who loves animals, who then turns into a tiger with a goal,” Giuliana’s competitive spirit was realized after she won the El Dorado County cross-country finals two years in a row for her school. “This year she wanted to continue running competitively past what our public program school offers so we joined Buffalo Chips Youth Running Club, coached by Linda Frazier,” Jodie told Village Life. “I kind of like competing. It feels good to get a workout,” said Giuliana, who also plays
competitive soccer for the USA Stars and is the only sibling out of four who enjoys running. In 2019 Giuliana set records both locally and across the country. She placed first in her age group and 12th overall at the Sacramento’s BE THE GIFT 5K, finishing with a personal record of 21:40. She then went on to set an age group course record and finished first in two meets at the Sacramento Running Association’s Youth XC Meets after completing a challenging 1.2 mile course that included four hay bale jumps, beating her first meet time by 15 seconds with a personal record of 7:49.9. “Running makes me happy,” Giuliana told Village Life, adding that one of her favorite competitions was in Indiana, where she placed first for her age and seventh overall. “It was n

of me to take the brochure that was meant for the property owner. I personally apologize to the homeowner … My curiosity got the best of me.” The video that surfaced on social media captured Nutting taking a piece of paper from what appears to be a crack in the front door, placing it in his pocket and putting another paper in the same spot. The timestamp on the video indicates that the incident took place Jan. 8 just before 6 p.m. Nutting said he realized the brochure was “political in nature” at the time but said he didn’t know for what candidate or cause. Pimlott spoke lowly of Nutting’s actions, describing them as anti-democratic. “It’s disheartening,” Pimlott said. “We’re all just trying to do the right thing and give the voters all the information so they can decide for themselves what choices they want to make. For another candidate to do that, to willfully take information away from a voter and put his out there, it’s disingenuous.” While serving as supervisor of District 2 in May 2013, Nutting was arrested on suspicion of felony charges of failing to disclose income, filing false documents, perjury and failing to recuse himself from votes in which he had a financial interest, among other offenses.
After a year in limbo, Nutting was acquitted of felony charges but found guilty in May 2014 on misdemeanor charges of accepting loans from county employees or contractors. Felony charges of filing false documents ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury. In June 2014 Judge Timothy Buckley ruled that Nutting’s seat would be vacated due to his misdemeanor conviction and the former supervisor would serve three years probation. A special election was held for his vacated seat in September 2014. The winner of that election, Shiva Frentzen, who also won in 2016, is termed-out. County supervisors, under the rules of the El Dorado County Charter, are permitted to serve no more that two terms (up to four years each) in a row. Six candidates are running for the District 2 seat — Nutting, Pimlott, business owner George Turnboo, Libertarian Party of El Dorado County Chairman Tyler Kuskie, Cameron Park Community Services District board member Felicity Carlson and El Dorado Hills Community Services District General Manager Kevin Loewen. The primary election will be held March 3. If no candidate receives a majority of votes (50 percent plus one) the top two candidates will face off in November.

elcome to opening night of “The Murder at Haversham Manor” where things are quickly going from bad to utterly disastrous. With an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead and actors who trip over everything (including their lines), the time will never be more right to see “The Play That Goes Wrong” at Harris Center for the Arts. Winner of the Olivier Award, the national tour boasts a hilarious hybrid of Monty Python and Sherlock Holmes. Co-written by Mischief Theatre company members Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, “The Play That Goes Wrong” is a riotous comedy about the theater. The play introduces The Cornley University Drama Society, which is attempting to put on a 1920s murder mystery but, as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong … does, as the accident-prone thespians battle on against all odds to get to their final curtain call.
The Broadway production of “The Play That Goes Wrong” opened at the Lyceum Theatre on April 2, 2017, and by its closing on Jan. 6, 2019, played 27 previews and 745 performances, making it the second longest running show in the history of the Lyceum Theatre. Not yet done with New York, “The Play That Goes Wrong” officially opened off-Broadway on Feb. 20, 2019, at New World Stages, where it continues delighting audiences. And the production is now in its fifth year in the West End and playing on six continents. “One of the most amazing things about having the show running all over the world is to be able to go and see different people in completely different cultures in completely different countries really laughing and enjoying the show,” said Lewis. “To see people in Norway laughing the same way that they’re laughing in Mexico or in Moscow, or all these different places, is really, really great.” One of the American producers of the show is J.J. Abrams, well-known ■

His 1928 work, “An American in Paris,” caused an uproar. Snobby critics scoffed that the music “was very fine for 1928, but what will happen when ‘whoopie’ goes out of style in a few years?” Others took note of the melodies and energy in the music. Audiences embraced it. Gershwin was hailed by the public as a new classical music genius. This work has never left the repertoire. Nearly a century later it is still going strong.
‘Piano Concerto No. 1’ Pianist Jon Nakamatsu returns to perform the highlight of the evening: “Piano Concerto No. 1 in B Flat, Op. 23” by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1840-1893). Tchaikovsky was tremendously insecure and prone to periods of mania and severe depression. Seeking approval for his first concerto, his feelings were dashed by the person to which he originally intended to dedicate the work. Pianist (and friend!) Nicholas Rubenstein told him the work was “clumsy and unplayable” when it wasn’t “vulgar and chaotic.” Crushed (yet refusing to make rec-
ommended changes), Tchaikovsky dedicated his first piano concerto to friend and conductor Hans von Bülow instead. The first public performance in 1875 was received with much fanfare and subsequent performances in America received equal applause. Even Rubenstein was forced to concede that the “Piano Concerto No. 1” was a success. The music world recognized that Tchaikovsky was peerless for his melodies, rhythms and use of tension and release that bordered on the erotic. The concerto swept Tchaikovsky up into one of his most successful periods as a composer. During the next year he would compose “Swan Lake,” the “Third Symphony,” the “Rococo Variations” and “Francesca da Rimini.”

for his film and television work. This is his first venture as a theater producer. “I was shooting ‘The Force Awaken’ sin London and I had a free night. I checked out what was playing in the West End and I saw something called ‘The Play That Goes Wrong.’ It sounded like a funny premise so I
bought a ticket,” Abrams explained. “When I went to see the play, I was amazed by the whole construction of it. The way it was put together, the rhythm of it, the cleverness, the brilliance of the performers. And I met one of the producers — Mark Bentley — at intermission. He was an incredibly nice guy
and I found myself asking if there were plans to take this comedy to the States.” Abrams did some public appearances to promote the production in New York, including taking the entire audience of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” to see the production. The national tour of “The Play That Goes Wrong” comes to the Harris Center Tuesday, Jan. 28, and on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 2 and 7 p.m. (same time both days). Tickets are available online at harriscenter. net or from the Harris Center ticket office at (916) 608-6888 from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. The Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, facing East Bidwell Street.

T
he Umpqua is a compact shingle-style home. Its exterior exudes nostalgic appeal, while its interior is totally in tune with contemporary trends. You can’t help but be intrigued by the medley of shapes and textures outside. Two smooth slender posts, one behind the other, highlight the recessed porch. The posts are seated on a rectangular support covered with stone veneer. Shake-textured shingles fill the triangular gable fronts and extend down to the level of the wainscoting. Composition shingles cover the roof. Craftsman styling, with its distinctive gridded appearance, adds its appeal to the windows, entry door and garage door. Front windows are also highlighted by a lintel with a raised accent. Inside a long entry hall sweeps past the secondary bedroom wing, utility room and coat closet before opening out into the spacious family gathering areas. Natural light washes into the living and dining rooms through rear and side windows, and sliding glass doors access the covered patio. Both rooms are open to the kitchen, which is minimally separated by a work island. It’s easy to serve up snacks and light meals on the island’s eating bar. And while working at the kitchen sink you can keep tabs on activities in the larger spaces and even enjoy watching flames in the gas fireplace across the way. Cupboards and counters wrap around two sides and a roomy pantry nestles into the inner corner. Natural light spills down through a rectangular

Fremonts Loop from the kitchen are the walk-in pantry and laundry room. The master suite is on the first floor. The bedroom features a gas fireplace, sliding glass door to the backyard and new carpet. Relax in the master bathroom’s deep soaking tub or clean up in the glass shower with multiple shower heads. The bathroom has two sinks and access to the generous walk-in closet. Upstairs are two more bedrooms that share a jack-and-jill bathroom. Each room has new carpet and paint as well as a walk-in closet. A bonus room with a wet bar is also upstairs. This room could be converted into a fourth bedroom, if
needed. The fenced back yard has a partially covered patio on the lower level — set up the barbecue and a dining table and chairs. Up the stairs is the sparkling pool surrounded by a stamped concrete patio with plenty of room for lounge chairs. The home has an attached, three-car garage plus a detached 30-footby-50-foot garage with two tall doors. The impressive space with epoxy flooring is plumbed for a bathroom and RV outlets. The garage has a security system and is also plumbed for propane hookups for an RV. A circular, paved driveway branches off to

$495,000, the median selling price for homes on acreage was $620,000. The price difference between rural and suburban homes has been narrowing since. Harry was like thousands of Californians who moved from more populated areas of the state to rural areas like El Dorado County. Back in the 1980s and ’90s El Dorado County experienced a surge in population as many young families left Sacramento County and moved to the foothills where land was more affordable and parents found a better, natural environment to raise their children. There, they cleared the land, built homes, perhaps planted an orchard, got a horse or other livestock and enjoyed living the rural lifestyle. Today the kids are gone. Most have left El Dorado County because housing is too high and jobs are scarce. The pastures are now empty, orchards go unattended and maintaining acreage is becoming more difficult at age 60 or 70 than it was at age 30 or 40. Facing significant lifestyle changes, many rural senior homeowners are packing up and moving closer to medical facilities, children and grandchildren and choosing to live in active adult communities. The increased out-migration of rural homeowners is causing excess inventory. The percentage of county listings of large homes on acreage continues to increase while the percentage of their sales continue to decline. Typically, rural home sales account for one-third of all county sales. Today, while rural listings still account for nearly one-third of all county listings, their percentage of total sales has been reduced to 16 percent. Housing needs transition over a lifetime based upon lifestyle. Historically seniors with large country homes sell and downsize, providing an opportunity for younger families with children or folks who are upgrading and want to move to the country. While the number of rural homeowners selling their homes will continue to increase, the number of families looking to buy a home in the country is declining. Some rural counties are experiencing declining populations. According to the California Department of Finance, 13 of the state’s 36 rural counties experienced declining populations between 2017 and 2018. Normally, falling prices, excess inventory and low mortgage rates would trigger a wave of new homebuyers looking for an opportunity to own a home. A rural lifestyle is still much in demand but buyers simply cannot afford the cost of fire insurance. Insurance companies claim they have lost $24 billion in fire insurance claims over the past three years. PG&E is in bankruptcy and 2 million rural California homeowners are losing billions of dollars in property values. It’s not a very good start to a new year. Ken Calhoon is a real estate broker in El Dorado County. He can be reached for questions and comments at kebn@kencalhoon.com.
Continued from B1 each of the garages and to ample parking at the front of the property, making it easy for party guests to come and go. Other property amenities include a 5,000-gallon holding tank with two pumps for the well, a whole-house generator, two solar-power systems (one for the house and the other for the pool and garage), two sheds with electricity, a drainage system, a home security system and outdoor lighting.
