Winters Healthcare opens pharmacy By Crystal Apilado Editor-in-Chief

Winters Healthcare staff, City and County officials, and the community gathered for the grand opening celebration of the Winters Healthcare community pharmacy last Wednesday. Winters Healthcare Foundation first announced it was planning to open a pharmacy last year. The Yolo County Board of Supervisors approved a $215,000 allocation on Feb. 9 to help Winters Healthcare construct the pharmacy inside its building. Director of Operations Stacey McCall

said when the new Winters Healthcare facility was constructed in 2019, they planned to expand services at some point and created a shell space inside the building. At the time, they weren’t set on what type that would be, and they didn’t want to be in competition with the longtime Winters pharmacy Eagle Drug. “It was important to us to not compete or take away from Eagle Drug. We thought about a pharmacy, or optometry or some other kind of medical service,” McCall said. “We knew that when Eagle Drug closed we wanted to make the shell space into a pharmacy.” When Eagle Drug closed after 32 years of business, Winters Healthcare began working with Yolo

The LNU fire has left an indelible scorch mark in every Winters resident’s memory. In response to the devastation, the Pleasants Valley Fire Safe Council (PVFSC) was created and recently received its certification as a Firewise Community. Essentially, a fire safety council — like the PVFSC — is a group of community members who come together to address fire risks in their area, have regular meetings to share information, concerns, ideas, observations and mitigate fire risks entirely. The PVFSC area spans from I-80 to 505,

participants a 50 percent discount incentive (up to $30 off) on eligible products purchased at partnering retailers. Since the inception of the pilot program in 2015, HHSA has distributed roughly $600,000 in discounts to CalFresh households with a $1 million budget for this edition, which runs through September

In fact, it was the LNU fire that sparked this group’s formation which had its first meeting around a year and a half ago. “I think the LNU changed everything because no fire in our history has been so devastating. It could have gone into our cities, impacted our greater communities and it destroyed our rural environment tremendously,” said PVFSC president David Stevens. “Three hundred and nine homes were lost, two

This year, students attending schools in Winters Joint Unified School District head back to classrooms on Wednesday, Aug. 10. Winters teachers and staff members are already busy prepping and getting ready for their return. One of the newest changes this year is the introduction of the Parent Portal online registration process. The process of updating a student’s emergency contact information online will replace the previous method of having families fill out and

submit a paper Emergency Card for each student. Families who have students enrolled in a Winters JUSD school received an email on July 25 that contained important login information to begin the online registration process. In addition to emergency contacts, families are also required to read through and sign important documents including the Winters JUSD and school site handbooks, technology use agreement, and other beginning of school documents.
