The sun may have been hidden by gloomy gray clouds, but the day couldn’t have been any brighter for the 13 Wolfskill High School seniors graduating on Friday, May 25, at the school campus. As the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” played, the seniors, each wearing the color cap and gown of their choosing, filed through the audience and took their seats as high school students for the last time. Lead teacher Matt Moran welcomed everyone and congratulated the students on 12 years of hard work. Referring to the saying, “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child,” Moran said, “It takes a community to make a graduate.” He thanked everyone present, from parents to school staff to community members, on their contributions to helping the students succeed. Each student was personally acknowledged at the ceremony, beginning with Moran. First to be praised was Ivan Hernandez. Moran said, “No student will ever earn more credits than Ivan,” who amazingly began his years at Wolfskill with no credits at all, but still graduated on time. “He put his nose to the grindstone,” said Moran. “I have not seen a student keep focused like he kept focused.” Moran noted that he and Adrian Jimenez “have butted heads” over the years. “He’s smiling because he’s graduating, and I’m smiling because he’s graduating,” quipped Moran, adding that Jimenez was “one of the most real students I know.” Next, Moran honored the students

who participated in this year’s journalism class and wrote for the school newspaper, the Wolfskill News & Review.” Dominic Sinkovich, Moran said, “walked in a writer,” and praised him for not only the quality of his writing but also for his courage in taking on some tough topics. “Dom didn’t hold back in his writing,” said Moran. “You’re an excellent writer and you stand up for what you believe in.” Next to be spotlighted was Luis Uribe,

who wrote exclusively about high-end athletic shoes for the newspaper. Moran said Uribe sometimes questioned the point of being in school, but kept on going to get that diploma, and added that Uribe has “grit.” Moran noted that Sandy Rico didn’t think she could write and wasn’t really sure if she even wanted to write when she joined the journalism class, and was surprised to learn that she enjoyed See GRADS, page B7

Express Homes For new grads, roommates and shared living spaces can bring fresh challenges By MATTHEW KEYS Contributing Editor Six days after my high school graduation I boarded a train headed for Northern California. Months earlier, my parents had given me an ultimatum: I could go to California for college or I could move somewhere else for school or for work. The choices may have been different, but the outcome was the same: Mom and Dad wanted me out of the house. My experience is not atypical: Deep down, the same parents who are beaming with pride when they see their student walk in their cap and gown are ready — really, really ready — for their child to go into the world and grow up. For some,

this will mean going off to a four-year college or university and winding up in a dorm or apartment. Others will enroll at community college, a trade school or head straight into the workforce. Almost all circumstances will involve moving into a shared living space with other people. The dynamic of living independently or with roommates is different from living with` family — and that’s a good thing. The social skills young adults develop when they co-habituate with friends or strangers can have many positive social, emotional and even financial benefits later on in life — but only if everyone has realistic expectations going in, which can be made easier by planning

ahead for small conflicts that can arise. Here are some tips and tricks gathered from around the ‘net that can help you navigate some of the more-turbulent waters associated with shared housing: • Cleanliness is at the top of the list. Nearly everyone has a different level of tolerance when it comes to how clean (or not) a shared space can be. Some may expect everything to be neat and tidy, while others are more tolerant of the occasional dish or mug left out for a few days. This is one area where everyone has to be on the same page. Set ground rules on what kind of clutter is okay and what isn’t. • Most colleges usually let students

pick a roommate they already know — a friend from school or the neighborhood, or someone who grew up in the same town. Landing a roommate you’re already familiar with definitely eliminates the need for a pre-screening process. But living with a person is way different from knowing them as a friend or acquaintance. Easily overlooked is the need to communicate, especially when it comes to someone you already know. When choosing someone to live with, it’s important to ask yourself two things: Is the other person approachable, and would you feel comfortable confronting them about a problem before it escalates? Most conflicts are

caused when the other person assumes they know the thoughts or intention of the other person. Regularly talking with your roommates helps

avoid these problems. This article is an excerpt from a lengthier column. For the full column, visit WintersExpress.com
