As it has all over the world, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected life in Hamilton County. Socializing is an important part of the lifestyle here, and the way we socialize is changing. The Palladium is a 1,600-seat shoebox style concert hall in Carmel that will be celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2021. Adjacent to Carmel City Center and the new Hotel Carmichael, it’s one of three venues that comprise the Center for the Performing Arts. The four-fronted, symmetrical design was inspired by Andrea Palladio’s Villa Capra, La Rotonda in Italy and the concert hall is acoustically fine-tuned. Like all performance venues, the Palladium’s schedule has been impacted by the COVID pandemic. Find updated information at thecenterpresents.org. Photo by Mike Berry.

Carmel's Unique Style Carmel’s devotion to the arts is apparent throughout the community but the Arts & Design District takes center stage. The District surrounds the intersection of Main Street and Range Line Road and features galleries, interior design showcases, boutiques and special events. The nearby Center for the Performing Arts is the home of The Palladium concert hall. The venue also includes the Studio Theater, The Tarkington theater and The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook initiative. Midtown Plaza is fast becoming a central gathering place for visitors and residents. It includes pool and ping pong tables, benches, a fire pit, covered swings and a huge video screen, all surrounded by restaurants stores and office buildings and an improved Monon Trail. Some activities are being altered for safety during the pandemic but as socializing becomes safe again, Midtown Plaza will continue to welcome all. Just south of Midtown, adjacent to the Palladium, is Carmel’s newest hotel, the Carmichael. A member of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, the Carmichael is an architectural masterpiece that complements the other inspiring buildings in and around Carmel City Center. Carmel also provides many opportunities for outdoor recreation and active lifestyles. The Monon Community Center and Waterpark at Central Park, and Cool Creek Park and Nature Center are family favorites. Who Shot Cyclone Johnson? The story behind the policeman depicted in the statue at Main St. and The Monon By Fred Swift The full story of the most infamous shootout in Hamilton County history, which took the lives of a policeman and a preacher, is told in a new book coming out on the 120th anniversary of the shootings. Andrew Wright, historical researcher for the Carmel Clay Historical Society, has done months of digging into the 1900 incident and brings a conclusion to the question of “Who shot Cyclone Johnson? On the evening of June 8, 1900, a fiery, itinerant evangelist, Thomas J. (Cyclone) Johnson, was brought before the Carmel Justice of the Peace Court, held at the Jeffries Livery Stable, to face allegations of assault and battery against a teenage Carmel boy who heckled the preacher during one of his revival meetings. Carmel constable Edward Carey, knowing the volatile preacher, deputized his cousin, William Frank Carey, to help escort Johnson to court. For some reason, the supposedly reformed ex-con Rev. Johnson was not adequately searched. He was carrying a hidden revolver. Upon reaching the livery stable, where a large crowd had gathered, Johnson apparently panicked, pulled his weapon, and shot the deputy. William Carey died on the spot.
Now, more than a century later, Wright has discovered new information after combing through 78 pages of witness testimony which had not been seen since the incident. In it he finds the answers to who shot Cyclone. Deputy Carey is honored with a statue on Main Street at the Monon Trail near the site of the shootout. The only law enforcement officer ever killed in Carmel, his photo hangs in Carmel Police headquarters. The book, entitled The Story of Frank Carey and Cyclone Johnson, may be purchased at the Carmel Historical Society Depot Museum.
Chaos erupted, followed by gunfire from members of the crowd. Johnson was killed by multiple gunshot wounds. The county sheriff and coroner were called, but after questioning, no one in the crowd admitted to knowing who shot Cyclone. The shooter was listed as undetermined. The killings got wide news coverage at the time. Carey left a widow and three children. Johnson also left a widow and children.

Fishers Provides Family Fun with Urban Vibe Twenty six years ago, Fishers was a sleepy railroad crossing with a few thousand people. Today it is one of Indiana’s most desirable family communities and is transforming that railroad crossing into a thriving downtown. New construction around the Municipal Center on 116th Street is drawing people to the Nickel Plate District with housing, offices and retail businesses.

A Downtown Destination A stroll around the Noblesville downtown square is like taking a trip back in time to days of a past era. The centerpiece of the square is the historic county courthouse, built in 1879 in the Second Empire style and renovated in the 1990’s. Around the Courthouse Square are unique shops featuring antiques, art, local crafts, gifts, a pottery studio, a game store, home décor, clothing and more. Just a few steps away from downtown, a trail leads to some of Noblesville’s other historic attractions. To be enjoyed either on foot or on a bike, the 3.5 mile White River Greenway Trail is a winding pathway that follows the White River. It tours through Forest Park, a special park that offers an aquatic center, mini-golf, a carousel and more. The trail then leads to the 1871 Potter’s Bridge, the only remaining covered bridge in Hamilton County, and surrounding park. In Noblesville, history comes alive with a modern twist and inviting places.

The Best of Both Worlds Old meets new in Westfield, where historic attractions and activities are unforgettable and the upcoming new developments will be spectacular. The Westfield-Washington Historical Society preserves Westfield’s rich history as a part of the Underground Railroad. It is believed that eight historic Westfield houses were active “stations” on the Underground Railroad in the 1820s and 1830s. Events such as the Railroad Ghost Walk feature ghost stories from this era with other characters from Westfield’s haunted past. While Grand Park (in the northern part of the city) draws families for sporting events from all over the nation, downtown is starting to take shape as well. Park Street is fast becoming a dining destination, but two microbreweries and an eclectic assortment of shops and restaurants are also taking hold along Main and Union Streets. It's all part of a vision called Grand Junction, anchored by a park and served by the Midland Trace Trail, built on the railbed of the old Midland Railroad. youth sports at home in westfield Westfield’s Grand Park is a force to be reckoned with in the world of youth travel sports, attracting some 750,000 people last year. But a passion for sports and love of the game is a part of the city’s culture. Community-based Westfield Youth Sports, Inc. (WYSI) was organized to promote youth sports in the schools and throughout the county. It offers opportunities for kids in a dozen sports who use the Grand Park facilities to compete. Roundtripper Academy, now in its third decade of service to ballplayers in Westfield, has expanded its facilities to 65,000 square feet of dedicated indoor training space for baseball and softball players of all ages.

ATLANTA
CICERO
For years, Atlanta has had a single claim to fame: the annual New Earth Festival, one of the state’s most popular. On the fourth full weekend in September, Atlanta’s population grows from a few thousand to tens of thousands, as more than 600 juried fine artists, crafters, antique vendors, and food vendors gather on the early fall weekend. This year’s event was cancelled for the first time ever, due to the pandemic, but town officials are confident they will be able to bounce back in 2021. But something else is happening in Atlanta.
Cicero is a lake community located on the north end of Morse Reservoir. Over 600 homes in Cicero are on the water and have water views or access. Paddlers also head to Strawtown Koteewi Park, just east of Cicero. This 750-acre park offers a canoe launch into the White River, fishing, camping, nature trails, horse trails, a nature museum, an archery range, aerial adventure trails and, in the winter, a snow tubing hill. There are plans for even more attractions.
The Nickel Plate Railroad has run through town since its earliest days and the train business is being revived in the northern part of the county. The Nickel Plate Express offers round trip excursions between Atlanta and Noblesville for those seeking a railroad experience. Mr. Muffins Trains, a model railroading retail store that includes an impressive model train layout, is open on Main Street. The Choo-choo Café, a train-themed restaurant, is open on weekends, and about 10 minutes east of downtown, the old Wheeler’s Restaurant is being restored as a studio showroom, café, and local market. Things are starting to perk up in Atlanta.
Strawtown was the original Native American settlement in Hamilton County and the park is a historical adventure. Archaeologists have discovered artifacts on the site such as arrowheads and pottery. Researchers believe that early people lived on the site from 1200-1400 AD. And the Lafayette Trace, one of the first trails through the American wilderness, went right through here. The small town of Cicero features mighty experiences for outdoor adventures of all kinds.

Northern Hamilton County SHERIDAN Sheridan’s small town environment celebrates a historical site and the best of the fall season. The Boxley Cabin was home to one of Indiana’s first abolitionists in 1828. Today, the Sheridan Historical Society offers tours to share this part of Indiana history. The cabin is located on Pioneer Hill in Veteran’s Park.
ARCADIA
From this history flows the heritage of a community of 3,000. Over time, more history gathers, transforming the wilderness refuge area into a town charmed by Main Street and setting the stage for business and industry to flourish. Sheridan has long been a farming community and recently an enterprising couple opened a “farm winery.” John and Deb Miller turned their passion into a business at Blackhawk Winery, open daily during the summer. Sheridan is also home to Stuckey Farm Orchard and Cider Mill. Visitors can pick 27 different varieties of apples from 4,000 trees, visit the pumpkin patch and enjoy a wagon ride. Autumn in Sheridan is a favorite time with seasonal activities for everyone.
A small town art community makes its home in Arcadia. The Arcadia Arts and Heritage Center is housed in the old 1869 railroad depot and displays the town’s history in artifacts and authentic “Arcadia Glass.” The Arcadia Arts Initiative provides classes and learning opportunities in a variety of art forms including spinning, weaving, painting, wood crafting and even musical performance. White River Christian Church in Noblesville recently made the most significant change downtown Arcadia has seen in decades. The church purchased an entire block of buildings and renovated them into the Remnant Coffee House, which is open for business and sure to become a community gathering place.

School Districts
To attract families, a community has to have top notch schools. We believe in education. Hamilton County has six public school districts and all are above average measured on virtually any academic metric. Each has its unique traits, and you can learn more from their websites. A number of high quality private schools serve families who prefer a parochial education.

Roundabouts! Welcome to the roundabout capital of the United States With more than 120 roundabouts and counting, Carmel is considered the roundabout capital of the United States. In fact, there are only a handful of signalized intersections left in town. You don’t have to drive far in Hamilton County before you encounter one of these efficient traffic control devices. Some driving tips: Always look left as you approach as all traffic goes counterclockwise. Yield to traffic already in the roundabout, when its clear, pull in and keep moving until you exit. The system breaks down if traffic stops inside the roundabout. They really do keep traffic moving as long as everyone follows the rules.
