CELEBRATING THE BEST IN THE BIZ
By Emily Donohoe
Business owners’ night of nights, the Campaspe Murray Business Awards, acknowledged the many people working day-in and day-out to keep the region thriving.
Taking out the top award — Business of the Year — was Kyabram-based business Empire Signs Group. At Rich River Golf Club on Wednesday, October 30, many business representatives enjoyed a dinner dedicated to honouring this work.
followed by an introduction to the event by Campaspe Shire Council director of sustainability Michael Sharp.
Guests were welcomed to Country by Wollithiga elder Uncle Rick Ronnan,
While master of ceremonies Anthony ‘Lehmo’ Lehmann had some hiccups on his journey from Melbourne, Ace Radio general
manager Angela Parker was able to step in to keep the ball rolling, with the sponsors of each award given the honour of presenting the respective accolades. Making up for lost time, Lehmo was able to deliver the laughs after the first course.

Edge FM Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award
Vanessa Bronsgeest
After taking out the Excellence in Marketing Award, Vanessa Bronsgeest was once again on stage for the Edge FM Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
Founder of Soap Bar Co., Mrs Bronsgeest has been at the helm of her business for 18 months, facing challenges along the way.
Now thriving, Mrs Bronsgeest opened her physical Soap Bar Co. store on October 31, a big step from her beginnings making soap in her kitchen.
The term ‘entrepreneur’ is one she resonates with.
“I feel like I’ve just taken the leap to be an entrepreneur,” Mrs Bronsgeest said.
“An entrepreneur is someone who lives, breathes and does everything around their business and that’s exactly what I do.
“At the same time, you’re trying to be there for your family and friends. It’s exactly what I feel like I am.”
In the past few months, dealing with restarting her Instagram account and setting up the first Soap Bar Co.
physical shopfront, she has relied on her support network as she navigates a new chapter.
“At the moment it’s super hard because I am giving everything to my husband on the family side of things,” she said.
“The whole point of this is that eventually I’m able to build the business up in store with staff, which will lead to more family time.”
With her store now in full swing, stocking all things
bath, body and home, Mrs Bronsgeest is excited to see what lies ahead.
Soap Bar Co. is located at 578 High St, Echuca.

Cross Carpet Cleaning
At just 21 years old, Chloe Cross started Cross Carpet Cleaning in 2021, providing a range of cleaning services around the region.
Now, at 24, Ms Cross has won the Moama Bowling Club Best Home Based Business Award.
“I’m stoked,” she said.
“I absolutely was not expecting that, so many other finalists were in it and I didn’t think that a cleaning business would succeed ... must’ve done something right.”
Her business is an NDIS, TAC, WorkSafe and aged care cleaning provider, and offers services such as carpet, upholstery and tile steam-cleaning; domestic and commercial cleaning; and window and specialised cleaning.
Ms Cross suffered a major setback only months after beginning her business, finding herself in intensive care after suffering a horse-related injury.
After three months in recovery, she swung back into action, expanding to a team of now 10 and servicing more than 100 clients.
Ms Cross said being recognised by the judges was an honour.
“It’s amazing to know that people think that I’ve done a good job,” she said.
“Fellow businesses think that I’ve done a good job. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Business of the Year Award
Empire Signs Group tops the awards list
The much-anticipated Business of the Year Award made it a double for Kyabram’s Empire Signs Group.
Having taken out the Best Professional Service Business Award earlier in the night, the team was thrilled to be recognised with the highest honour.
Director Dale Coldwell said he was humbled by the award, a testament to the hard work put in by the group’s staff.
“This is massive for our business and it’s massive for our team,” he said.
“I am speechless.
“It’s the team, we all play our roles and we do a good
job, that’s just what it is.”
Open to any business that had received an award, the crew members did not think they would take out the prize among so many other deserving winners.
“I had no idea that we would win this, it was a massive shock,” Mr Coldwell said.
“I almost fell off my chair.” Empire Signs Group has strong connections to a range of companies around the area, particularly in Ky, where it has worked on projects with many local businesses.
These include the Kyabram Club, Kyabram Fauna Park, Ky West Pub, Brady Electrical and
Kyabram’s Santa Cave.
Mr Coldwell was proud to represent Kyabram on the big stage.
“It’s huge,” he said.
“We are a town that is so small. To be able to do what we do in the town ... it’s just huge.
“We’re definitely happy to
take this back to Kyabram.”
While the team specialises in all things signage, staff members will be applying their handiwork to show off their two new awards in the office.
“We were just saying, we definitely have to make a shelf,” Mr Coldwell said.
Melville & Hicks Lawyers Employee of the Year Award
Carmel Beck
With more than four decades of service to Echuca Regional Health, Carmel Beck has been acknowledged with the Melville & Hicks Lawyers Employee of the Year Award.
Beginning as a dental assistant in 1981 to the first dentist employed at ERH, Mrs Beck has been a long-serving contributor to the health and wellbeing of the region.
Having lived in Echuca for 48 years, Mrs Beck has a strong connection to the area, where she started her career at the age of 20 and has raised her family.
Being nominated was an honour in itself for Mrs Beck, who was overwhelmed to have won.
“To get nominated was amazing,” she said.
“It’s a huge honour and I just feel you can’t do it alone.”
Mrs Beck’s dedication to Echuca Regional Health is exemplified in her years of work, which she believes shows how wonderful a service it is.
“It’s such a great organisation,” she said.
“I’ve always been proud to
be part of that organisation.
“You wouldn’t be there for 43 years if you didn’t enjoy what you did.”
Following her selection as a finalist for the award, Mrs Beck had an opportunity to reflect on her career.
Her role as ERH Dental Clinic manager has allowed her to lead an ever-growing team, even if she does not necessarily resonate with the label of ‘manager’.
“I moved through the pathways to be the manager,” she said.
“I don’t like to call myself a manager, I think that I’m a leader.
“I don’t like to manage people. People have got their own individual things to learn and they grow from there.”
Mrs Beck is also looking ahead, excited for the next chapter for the oral health team as they move into a new space.
Scheduled to take place within the year, the upgrades come from April’s announcement of $9.7 million in Victorian Government funding towards the ERH Central
Sterile Services Department and Oral Health Unit.
“We’ve got a highlight coming, which is the movement to the new clinic,” she said.
“It will be happening hopefully over the next 12 months.
“We will be growing and moving on.”
Mrs Beck credited the connection with the community and with fellow dental clinics in the region as an important element to ERH’s success and reach.
“We’ve got a few dental services in Echuca who support us: Moama, Kerang, Cohuna and Rochy,” she said.
Mother of Sarah, Steven and Michelle, wife of Craig and grandmother of Archie, Mrs Beck thanked her family for the role they played in her success professionally and personally.
A true community spirit, she also acknowledged her fellow winners and toasted to their success.
“My family has been beautiful,” she said.
“It’s been a long time to be involved in one business, so I’ve been fortunate to have the
backing of them.
“Congratulations to all those other winners, too, because they have been so worthy.”
McPherson Media Group Best in Retail Award
The Town Barber Rochester
A newer kid on the block, The Town Barber Rochester took out the McPherson Media Group Best in Retail Award.
Owner Matt McMillan grew up in Rochy, moving to Melbourne to study barbering before bringing his skills back to town.
The Town Barber provides a range of haircutting services for men, including mullets and fades, along with beard trims and seniors’ cuts.
“It feels amazing,” he said.
“I lived in Melbourne for about seven years, and once I got qualified as a barber I came home.”
Mr McMillan opened the Town Barber in August 2022, only months later facing the October 2022 floods, which brought two feet of water into his business.
Since reopening in December 2022, the barber has proven popular with locals, providing a service that was otherwise absent.
“It’s a good feeling to get this kind of achievement,” Mr McMillan said.
“Especially when there is a need and a calling for this type of business around this area.”
Receiving the award came as a shock to Mr McMillan, who nominated his business due to encouragement from fellow business owners.
“I wasn’t expecting it at all,” he said. “I’m proud and pretty stoked.”

Gargarro Botanic Gardens Cafe
Gargarro Botanic Gardens Cafe has taken out the prestigious Nichol Trading People’s Choice Award, a fine feat for a business that has been operating for only 20 months.
More than 35 businesses were finalists in this category, which saw 3700 votes from the public received over a sixweek period.
Café owners Joel Raglus and Leon McAsey were humbled by the honour.
“We didn’t know,” Mr McAsey said.
“When I heard how many votes were cast, I thought, ‘yeah, I think so’, because we had a massive amount of people who voted for us.
“We had signs up at work.”
Opening in March 2023, the café has gone from strengthto-strength, attracting visitors from across the region and beyond to Girgarre, a dot on the Campaspe Murray region map.
Combined with the Gargarro Botanic Gardens, the café presents a unique offering for a town of under 600 people.
“It’s awesome that people come to us,” Mr Raglus said.
“We’re nothing, really, but they want to drive out and they see everything, and they love it.”
For a business that did not
even exist when the awards were held in 2022, the recognition was overwhelming.
“I am blown away,” Mr Raglus said.
Foodmach Excellence in Manufacturing and Trade Award
Brady Electrical Contracting
Kyabram’s Brady Electrical Contracting has once again taken out the Foodmach Excellence in Manufacturing and Trade Award.
With more than 50 years of combined experience, the Brady Electrical Contracting team provides domestic, commercial and industrial electrical work, including fit-outs, lighting and design installations, and testing.
Following up on the 2022 success, Laura Brady was shocked to receive the honour over the other finalists.
“We’re so honoured, we’re chuffed,” she said.
“I actually didn’t prepare a speech because I looked at the line-up of businesses and thought, ‘yeah, we will not win’.
“I’m so gob-smacked.”
Like many other businesses, Brady Electrical Contracting has seen the impacts of inflation and the cost-of-living crisis first-hand.
Despite these trials, the company has been able to move forward thanks to the work of the team.
“This year in particular has been the most challenging,”
Mrs Brady said.
“We’ve had builders gone broke, we’ve had to do redundancies, there’s been a mountain of things that have gone wrong.
“The one thing that we finally got right is the team and the culture.
“I’m just so grateful. Billy would be proud as punch.”
While managing director Billy Brady was unable to attend, Mrs Brady was happy to accept the award on his
behalf and that of the whole business.
“I’m so honoured, because it was really unexpected,” she said.

Empire Signs Group
Kyabram’s Empire Signs Group took out the Telstra Best Professional Service Business Award.
The business was founded in 2011 by director and Kyabram local Dale Coldwell, and has since expanded its services across the Goulburn Valley, Bendigo and metropolitan Melbourne.
Mr Coldwell was pleasantly surprised by the team’s win, keeping his fingers crossed after being named as a finalist.
“I was hoping, but not preparing,” he said.
“I wrote a quick speech on the way here — and I’m glad I did.”
As its name suggests, Empire Signs Group is made up of experts in all things signs, including building, illuminated, retail, vehicle and architectural signage, pylons, billboards and way-finding.
The team also provides graphic design, project management, sales and pre-press services, working on projects such as Melbourne Central Tower and Forever Fresh Echuca.
Mr Coldwell credited the group effort involved to

achieve the honour.
“It’s always the team, it’s always my wife, we’re a good team ourselves,” he said.
“It’s crazy, I’m very happy with it.
“It’s good to win something for them.”
Kagome Health and Wellbeing Award
Moama Dental Clinic
Moama Dental Clinic’s Dr Anup and Ketki Shenai have been honoured with the Kagome Health and Wellbeing Award.
Having relocated from India 16 years ago, Dr Anup Shenai started at Rochester Dental Clinic, buying the business in 2011.
Proving to be a hit in the region, he expanded his services and started Moama Dental Clinic in 2016.
Working alongside his wife, Ketki, and a team of visiting dentists and support team, Dr Shenai credited their work for the practice’s success.
“I’m feeling amazing,” he said.

Bar Lee
Opening mere days before a global pandemic, Bar Lee has pushed through the trials and tribulations, taking out the Rich River Golf Club Excellence in Hospitality Award.
Co-owners Jess Godfrey, Ryan Moorhouse and Jenny and Cameron Sutton did not expect to win, but were honoured to take out the top gong.
“I think we’re a bit surprised, and proud,” Ms Godfrey said.
“You want to be like, ‘yeah, we’re going to win’, but then you see everyone else and you think, ‘oh no, maybe we won’t’.”
Since being named as a finalist, the Bar Lee crew has looked back at the past three and a half years in business, facing unprecedented challenges head on.
The business opened on February 4, 2021, eight days out from a Victoria-wide lockdown. Then in October 2022, floods rocked the region.
but it’s something our team required.
“We have had a bit of rundown since COVID and then we had the floods, where we basically had both the clinics closed down for three months.
“The girls really stuck around and they really deserve this.”
Dr Shenai also acknowledged his fellow finalists, who he believes deserve appreciation for their hard work in a tough climate.
“I think running a business is challenging these days,” he said.
“Even (though) we won, everyone who is a finalist definitely deserves some award,
because running a business is getting tougher and tougher.
“An award and recognition definitely is encouraging.”
Mrs Shenai echoed the sentiments, feeling proud of the work that allowed the clinic to be honoured in this way.
“The fact that people chose it means we must be doing something right,” she said.
“Something must be working.”

Soap Bar Co.
Overcoming hiccups in the world of online marketing, Soap Bar Co.’s win of the Committee for Echuca Moama Excellence in Marketing Award is particularly pointed.
After having her business account’s Instagram hacked earlier this year, Vanessa Bronsgeest is proud to have made a strong comeback and be recognised in this way.
“This is the one that I care about because of everything that happened,” she said.
“I’m so excited to win this award.”
Since losing the account at 25,000 followers, Soap Bar Co. has regained these numbers and has now opened a physical store in the Port of Echuca.
Mrs Bronsgeest believes the experience of being hacked changed her business outlook, shifting her focus to other forms of marketing and customer engagement, including the opening of a bricks-andmortar store.

Winter Blues Festival
Entirely volunteer-run and driving around 20,000 visitors to Echuca-Moama each year, the Winter Blues Festival has been honoured with the Echuca Regional Health Community Impact Award.
An entirely free, all ages event, the festival draws top musicians locally and from afar to perform.
Festival chair Laurelin Berick was shocked to hear the event called out as the award winner.
“We were so thrilled to have found out that we were nominated, we had no clue at all,” she said.
“There are 11 of us here tonight who have come to
dinner, we never do things like that.
“We all paid for our own tickets because we don’t want to take from the festival that is meant to deliver to do the community.
“We were only here because we were nominated, we were just so proud of that.”
Ms Berick was chuffed to accept the honour, which she believes the festival encapsulates.
“Never in our wildest dreams had we have thought that we’d come away as the winner of the community award,” she said.
“It’s the exact thing we do, that’s the coolest part.”
With the event going into its 25th year, Ms Berick feels that the committee has worked hard to align the festival with the community.
“We’ve really focused in the last two years on having quite an aligned vision,” she said.

Billabong Ranch Adventure Park’s diverse and unique offerings saw it take out the Discovery Parks Group Excellence in Tourism Award.
Providing experiences for families, school groups and adults alike, the ranch boasts many activities based on the beautiful Murray and Goulburn rivers.
Owner Kerri Acquisto was thrilled to achieve the honour, which the business also took out in 2017.
The win came as a shock, having seen the other category finalists.
“I was a bit nervous but very excited,” she said.
“I didn’t have a clue, especially when Bar Lee and Gargarro both won other categories, I thought, ‘oh, we’re toast.’.
“It was very surprising.
“I didn’t have anything prepared at all, I just ad-libbed.”
Receiving the award from Discovery Parks Group’s Sheri Dawson made it extra special for Mrs Acquisto, due to their close relationship as local tourism providers.

“They have had us come in to do different odds and sods for ever, as well as us sending customers there.”

Local businesses shine on the big stage
From page 1
The whirlwind of emotions experienced by each award winner remained the highlight of the night, with plenty of tears, laughs and hugs shared by the room.
Murray River Council Mayor John Harvie highlighted the need for businesses in the region to be recognised for their hard work through such events.
“Our businesses are the backbone of our community, and it’s wonderful to be able to recognise their dedication and achievements through the awards,” he said.
“It’s great to see winners from all corners of the area, showcasing the incredible diversity and strength of our local economy.
“We hope the awards continue to inspire ongoing excellence and growth in our business sector.”
The awards saw 60 applications across its 14 categories, with two external judges reviewing each category, including through on-site visits.
Campaspe Shire Council chief executive Pauline Gordon said before the event she was excited to see the addition of three categories, Excellence in Health & Wellbeing, Excellence in Marketing and the Community Impact Award.
“The popular People’s Choice Award saw a tremendous response, with over 3700 votes cast from the community for their favourite business,” she said.
