NATURE AT ITS BEST Beauty can sometimes be found in the place you least expect it. You can find bushels of Darling Peas along the highway, and grey-crowned babblers circling their sweet petals, or bright yellow Billy Buttons cradling each side, bulbous and energetic. All of this beauty can be found in the Murrumbidgee Council region, and is depicted in the latest addition to the street art trail. The babblers are the primary feature of the mural created near the Jerilderie swimming pool. It is a vulnerable local species with unique features, and more than just a pretty central focus. Their presence is a subtle reminder the fragility of our ecoystem and the importance of living with nature and harmony. Grey-crowned babblers typically live in family groups, working together to forage for food and maintain nests. They embody the spirit of both strong family units and a tight knit, supportive community. Renowned graffiti artist Matt Thompson brought the breathtaking display of local flora and fauna to life, with help from his assistant Lloyd Knoles. Mr Thompson— who has had his work featured at Hobart’s Museum of Old and New
Art, the US Consulate and the B Side gallery, just to name a few – received design input from the local community to create what he and Murrumbidgee Council believe will be a piece the whole region can take pride in. “The billy buttons weren’t originally in. I was more focusing on the Darling Pea and the birds, but in the refining process, speaking to locals and naturalists, they said we needed billy buttons in there,” Mr Thompson said. “I took a look at them and decided it was a really cool element. “It’s not just me doing my thing, and imposing that on everybody. It’s a collaboration.” The centrally located mural is the perfect reason to take a road trip through historic Jerilderie. Once you’re done gazing at the unique art work, you can take a stroll through the past along the Billabong Creek Walk, look at military strategist Sir John Monash’s home of origin, or visit the bank vault, where outlaw Ned Kelly once held Jerilderie citizens captive. Step back in time The Depot offers something you won’t find anywhere else. The ‘50s themed, slick roadside venue in Deniliquin boasts a huge historical vehicle and memorabilia collection. With richly unique range of vehicles, you can tell from the moment you step in that you’re in for an experience.
“So, for example, one ‘32 Ford has gone home to its owner, but they’ve dropped off a ‘35 Ford in its place.
The huge range of vehicles date to 1908, including a 1959 pink Cadillac, and there are examples of retro Hollywood glamour, long haul trucking, and beyond.
“In the last year, we’ve had a 350 GTS Holden Monaro on loan to us, which is very high quality, as well as Phil Horton’s Holden Torana. For Holden fans, these are great vehicles to come and have a look at.”
The Depot has grown around the historic vehicle and memorabilia collections of Neville and Debbie Purtill and the Purtill family, which has operated businesses in the Deniliquin region for three generations. There are so many items in the collection there is a consistent rotation of displays on the museum floor. The Depot curator John Haig said a careful eye will always find something different, making The Depot a vibrant experience for returning and new visitors. “Keen-eyed observers will find main items in the displays changed or added,” Mr Haig said. “The bulk of our collection is always on show, but we do have vehicles come in and out on loan.
The Depot’s huge collection is not limited to cars. Its extensive collections of Elvis memorabilia, vintage toys, Australiana from the ‘40s, ‘50s, and ‘60s and movie memorabilia are all arranged in novel displays which will both evoke memories and fascinate. “We are catering for a broad range of people; we have a bit of everything,” Mr Haig said. “People sometimes come in expecting it to be all automotive based. “But they are often pleasantly surprised to find things that remind them of their childhood, or even their grandparents, from when they were growing up.” What’s On Winter 2021 5
Also unique to The Depot, is an exceptionally tailored experience, with key focus on the customer. “What I love most about The Depot and being here isn’t so much our displays, but our customers’ memories and stories, and the memories we spark in their mind coming to visit,” Mr Haig said. “We get a lot of people come in and there will be a vehicle, or something in the collection — a toy, or our kitchen display — that reminds them of what they had when they were younger, and just starts a story for them. “Everyday we talk to our visitors who come from all over the country. And they just have an amazing time here and just want to share their stories with us.” The Depot is located at 158 Hardinge St, Deniliquin and is open 7 days a week from 10am — right next to the Cobb Highway Roadhouse which is now home to 1950s style diner, Cruizin* Diner. NSW Dine & Discover vouchers can be used at The Depot including the gift shop and Cruizin* Diner until June 30, 2021.
DENI UTE MUSTER
DENI2021 What’s On Winter 2021 6
An experience like no other
THE Deni UTE MUSTER MORE THAN A CELEBRATION OF COUNTRY MUSIC, THE DENI UTE MUSTER EPITOMIZES OUTBACK LIFE, CELEBRATING EVERYTHING RURAL OVER THE TWO-DAY FESTIVAL. The annual event was established in 1999 with a vision to put Deni on the map. With a crippling drought drying up the land and income, a small group of community folk rallied together with the idea to start a rural themed festival, to bring visitors to this little town on the edge of the outback— and that gave birth to the legendary muster. Now going into its 23rd year, the event is considered a rite of passage for all Aussies and a quintessential symbol for Aussie way of life, utes and all. Held on the NSW Labour Day long weekend each year— including a virtual event last year during the COVID-19 pandemic— the event attracts an average annual crowd of 20,000 from all across Australia, and even internationally. They bring their utes in the thousands and don the iconic blue singlet as part of festival traditions – and to try and break the event’s two Guinness World Records.
The ute count record currently stands at 9,736 utes mustered at the famed site, and the blue singlet count stands at 3972. The Deni Ute Muster has attracted international superstars, with legends such as Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw and Cold Chisel taking to the famed muster stage. This year the festival will be a homegrown celebration, and held Friday, October 1 and Saturday, October 2. Taking to the main stage will be The Angels and John Williamson, as well as Busby Marou, Troy Cassar-Daley, Shannon Noll, The McClymonts, McAlister Kemp, Sara Stoner, Shane Nicholson, Felicity Urquhart, Hurricane Fall and Darlinghurst. Local and up and coming artists are also an attraction, with the muster hosting back-to-back music across the weekend. Taking the crowds through from sunrise to sunset will be the Deni Bush Poets, Deni Youth Band/Deni Uke Muster, Zac and Eliza Spalding, Ruby Saltbush,
What’s On Winter 2021 7
Pete Denahy and Band, The Weeping Willows, Homegrown, Hayley Jensen, Zara Lindeman, Sammy White, Ruby Gilbert, Duncan Phillips Band, Matt Joe Gow, Danny Phegan and the Turk Tresize Band. Around the ground entertainment on offer all weekend will include whip cracking, camel rides, bull ride spectacular, bogan bingo, carnival corner, driving comp, rock climbing, wood chopping, barrel races, hay bale hustle, Brophy Bros circus and more. There’s also some new activities including Dinkum Dinosaurs, mini golf, rescue dog extravaganza animal farm, a superslide and science workshops. The Deni Ute Muster is part of the community fabric in Deniliquin, with more than 1000 local volunteers each year raising a hand to help put on the event, resulting in $100,000 being donated back to community groups. And with Muster HQ and a Muster Museum now located at the festival site on Conargo Rd, there’s even more to see when you stop by the festival gates for that iconic photo.

Iconic event’s
MUSEUM OPEN The spirit of the Deni Ute Muster can now be celebrated year-round. The Deni Ute Muster museum extends on the iconic event, with a place to visit and learn all about the town’s famous festival. The Deni Ute Muster is a two-day festival held in Deni each year that celebrates country music and outback life. It features performances from world class artists, previously hosting stars such as Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood and Cold Chisel. The event is famous of course for mustering up world record numbers of utes to the town, as well as iconic activities of rural life such as whip cracking, bull riding and driving comps.
Items on display include the contents of a history box for each year of the event, including stickers, articles, tickets, wrist bands and merchandise. Honour boards listing competition winners have also been produced, and there’s also interactive touch screens where you can go through photos from each year of the muster. The retail space space means locals and vistors can pick up some great souvenirs. Goodies include shirts, hats, vests, drink bottles and stubby holders, as well as the classic blue singlets worn at the event.
Situated at the main entrance of the festival grounds, the tourist attraction built at the start of this year gives visitors a taste of what the muster is all about. The museum tells the story of the Deni Ute Muster from its beginnings in 1999 to present day, paying tribute to of course the ute, and all history behind the festival and its attractions. At the musuem, visitors can check out an amazing collection of memorabilia.
The centrepiece of the current exhibition is a 1979 HZWB Bitza designed and built by ‘Ferrel Kev’, and now retired to the exhibition. There are also two Isuzu Wasp utes which date back to the early 1960s, and a fully operational 30ft Comet windmill, which acts as tourism attraction giving a great photo in golden hour and educational tool. You can also grab a snap of the famous entrance gates while you’re there.
A library has been created containing magazines and newspapers which featured the muster, books about the Deni Ute Muster, and even books on the artists who have performed at the event.
Chat to the staff to learn all about the famous festival. The museum is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Weekends are by appointment, by calling (03) 5881 3388. What’s On Winter 2021 9

Find some peace and quiet at
WILLOUGHby’s Beach Willoughby’s BEACH Campground is the perfect place to RELAX this winter, and it’s only a stone’s throw from central Deniliquin. The campground, located in the Murray Valley Regional Park on the banks of the graceful Edward River, radiates simplicity. The unmarked sites are versatile; anyone with a tent, camper trailer, caravan, or vehicle can stay and camping is free. And the family dog is welcome too! Visitors are advised to bring their own food, drinking and cooking water. Picnic tables, barbecues and fire pits are available but toilet facilities and pottable water are not. Enter along Memorial Drive, then follow the winding dirt track through the trees and down onto the beach on your left. All you have to do is pick your spot and set up camp. Visitors can take a walk along the river, light a campfire or try their hand at fishing.
Those looking for an adrenaline hit can take their bikes out on the 12km of mountain bike trails which have entrances through Willougby’s Beach and Packenham St, Deniliquin.
From the campground, it’s an easy stroll on the sealed Beach to Beach Walk to town to grab a coffee or lunch before making your way back to camp.
The trails are a fast and thrilling way to see the beauty of the park, and cyclists can choose from three loop tracks of medium difficulty.
Look closely for an abundance of wildlife: kangaroos, parrots and galahs can be found under the canopies all year round — don’t forget your binoculars, and watch out for flashes of green, yellow, red and pink.
Don’t have your own bike? Rent one from Deniliquin Visitor Information Centre in George St. For those aquatic-minded guests, small to medium boats and kayaks can be lowered into the river from boat ramps accessible at Willoughby’s, giving visitors a chance to meander down the river from an entirely new perspective. Pull up on the opposite bank to explore the Kolety Walking tracks, about 1.3km under river red gum forest.
Access to the walking and hiking tracks is free. A $6 per night booking fee applies to Willoughby’s Beach Campground and booking beforehand is required. Book online at www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/ camping-and-accomodation/campgrounds/ willoughbys-beach-campground or call the National Parks contact centre on 1300 072 757.

For novice campers, and those who want a comfortable, quiet stay, there are many established camping grounds that offer the perfect mixture of comfort and the raw outdoors. Willoughby’s Beach Campground in Deniliquin offers a rich opportunity to immerse yourself in the outdoors, without giving up access to amenities in the regional towns CBD. It’s the perfect holiday spot for young families, and first timers, with access to the stunning Beach to Beach walk, a breezy stroll that takes you along the Edward River to sandy McLean Beach. Keen fishers will find prosperous spots studded along the rivers banks, with breakfast only a cast line away. Visit the information centre for extra tips on where to find the best spots. Deeper south, Tocumwal offers natural beauty with a modern edge. The emerging tourist town is well known for koala sightings and novel innovation, as well as gorgeous camping spots. The Tocumwal Town Beach camping ground gives campers access to the Murray River, the huge Murray cod below its surface, and plentiful wildlife, but is merely a stone throw away from the citys centre, giving visitors the best of both worlds. Tocumwal is a hotbed of historic sites and quaint eateries, offering something to please everyone. Closer to the iconic Murrumbidgee river, Bunyip Hole Campground is just 10 minutes from the scenic town of Darlington Point. Explore Deniliquin’s
LOCAL HISTORY The Deniliquin and District Historical Society Museum displays some of their oldest treasures, in the freshest ways. The society intricately explores the rich and complex history of Deniliquin, with an original and authentic flair that will help even the most reluctant of tourists feel at home. When you drop in to Macauley St museum, you never know what to expect. You may even catch an eyeful of some old bloomers. Yes, on purpose. The ladies of the historical society have been known to dress up in historical clothing to welcome tourists. “Doris (a historical society member) started dressing up because she had some old fashioned bloomers, that belonged to her grandmother,” secretary Meg Christian said. “The people on the tours always get a good laugh out of it. “Jan (another member) struggles to find old clothes she can use for that purpose— I think one of the photos we took of her, the cap she had on was a shower cap really, because she couldn’t find a genuine cap!” Ms Christian said the costumes don’t always make an appearance, but members always welcome their guests with genuine enthusiasm and an open mind. Often if you visit, you will be invited to sit down and enjoy a cup of tea with society members, many of whom lived through the events on display throughout the museum. “We have a core group of volunteers that are always there,” Ms Christian said.
“It’s the friendliness of the volunteers that makes people come back. “When visitors come in, they are always welcomed, they are shown around, and if they have any particular interests, we point them out to what’s specific to them. “Most of our members are elderly, and some of them have lived in Deniliquin all their lives. “So they have a lot of history just in their headsif you’re interested to sit down and have a chat. Visitors are always invited to sit down with us for our cup of tea about 11am. The museum has an enormous and well cared for collection, with a large variation in scope. With such a large amount of information on everything ‘Deni’, there is something for everybody— from history buffs to farming enthusiasts. “Some people are into trains, or planes, and we have a lot of photos. We’ve also restored the original railway station awning. “We often find photos to do with whatever they’re interested in. “They might be interested in having a look at what we have from the old police station, including a door from the old jail on display. “We have a lot of old shearing memorabilia, a lot of clippers, and all sorts of old tools and equipment. “Many come here for family history, looking for information for a relative from the past. “The thing that impresses people is the scope of what we have here. “There are so many different rooms with different things, and we just have so many things on display— we cover the social history of Deniliquin and beyond.” The building alone is something to behold. The open faced museum is tasteful and an insight into riverside elegance. With a rose studded garden crawling beside the footpath, the site is classically beautiful. After exploring the museum, Deniliquin’s eateries and cafés are a perfect treat. The Deniliquin and District Historical Society Museum is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am to noon. Other times and group bookings are by appointment. Call 0408 454 948. What’s On Winter 2021 15

From farm to provedore The Rich Glen Estate came in to being in the late 1990s, when Franc Vodusek and his son Damien planted 36,000 olive trees across the family’s two properties near Yarrawonga. On Rich Fields and Glen Loth, the family olive grove made way for Rich Glen Olive Estate — a working farm where olive oil and by products are made, and where you can tour the farm and enjoy a lovely meal in the farmgate cafe.
The shop was ‘‘bursting at the seams’’ by the time
The family started with olive oils, and Daimein’s wife Rosalind added her five generations of farming knowledge and her magic for making premium products for the home, pantry, and bathroom.
the main street of Yarrawonga.
The 36,000 olive trees and 100 avocado trees thriving at Rich Glen today provide the primary ingredients for Rosalind’s creations — including allnatural, preservative-free skin care, soaps, cleaning products, candles and baby care, all naturally and carefully scented to make your home smell fantastic. There are 150 products in the range including the famed Rich Glen Estate extra virgin olive oil, salad dressings, olives, sauces, condiments and pasta, or they can treat themselves to something extra special. Dukkahs, relishes and tapenades, and olive leaf teas are just a few of their premium table products. Rich Glen started small with products originally sold from a shop in the kids’ bedrooms to relatives who visited.

At RG Provedore — at Shop 3, 137 Belmore St Yarrawonga — you can sample the salad dressings, flavoured olive oils, dukkahs, sauces, condiments, olives, pasta, cordials, olive leaf teas and the gourmet provedore offering. RG Provedore is generally open 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 3pm on Saturdays, 10am to 3pm Sundays and closed on public holidays. Hours may vary due to COVID-19. Visit and explore
river country Beautifully framed by waterways and native bushland, Murray River Council is home to a vibrant mix of riverside communities where relaxed country living and modern-day indulgence collide. Known as River Country, you can step off the beaten track and unearth an exhilarating world of award-winning wineries, restaurants, coffee shops, golf courses, artisan stores, clubs, touring routes, cycling trails, walking tracks and homegrown festivals in the Murray River Council region. Discover a more relaxed rhythm of life with morning bushwalks, river swims, evening sunsets and campfires. The locals have put together a series of suggested itineraries for visitors to ensure they get a taste of what the region has to offer, which includes the Wakool Murray Trail. Beginning in the Riverina’s oldest town, Moulamein, this trail follows the Edward River west to Kyalite before winding south through Tooleybuc and Koraleigh, and then following the Murray River to Murray Downs outside Swan Hill. Covering a distance of 147km, the driving time is just under two hours. But leave yourself a full day to explore the attractions at each stop.
Morning in Moulamein Start your adventure with coffee and cake at the Moulamein Art Gallery, which is open Thursdays and Fridays, or by appointment. There’s always something interesting in the gallery, which features art and craft from local artists. From there, it’s just a minute’s stroll to the old Moulamein Wharf and nearby restored courthouse, where you can see and read about Moulamein’s vital role in the establishment of river trade across the entire Riverina region.
Kyalite – two huge drawcards Head west on the Kyalite Rd for about 40 minutes, and you’re in the small town of Kyalite — where the
Edward River meets the Wakool River, just a couple of kilometres from the Murray. Kyalite, known as Wakool Crossing until 1927, has been a popular draw card for years due to two things: the pub and the fish. The Kyalite pub is a local watering hole, community centre, general store and museum. Stop by for supplies and enjoy a chat with the locals. If you left your fishing gear at home, supplies are available for purchase here too. Many people will declare, hand on heart, that the very best fishing anywhere in River Country is right here. Ask around for tips on where they’re biting, and head out for a few glorious hours at the water’s edge.
Tooleybuc and the timber truss Head south on Yanga Way and you’ll be in Tooleybuc in 15 minutes. Pop by the Tooleybuc Sports Club to see the Giant Mallee Root (the biggest stump in NSW and second largest in the world according to the Guinness World Records), and learn all about the rare and endangered Dinosaur Ant. The Tooleybuc Bridge crossing the Murray River to Victoria is also worth a visit. It’s a timber truss and steel lift-span bridge of technical significance for its sophisticated design and construction. It is still in operation.
Koraleigh lunch break It’s less than 20 minutes to Koraleigh, following the Murray south towards Nyah. About half-way there, look out for a sign to the Koraleigh Ring Tree on the right-hand side of the road. Part of the ancient customs of the Wadi Wadi people of the area, rings are formed by binding and training branches to grow in a ring shape over time. Ring trees marked boundaries and other important sites. This rare example is a large tree standing 10m from the road.

In Koraleigh, stop off at the General Store for a massive, unforgettable burger. You may never eat again.
Ferry across the Murray From Koraleigh head south to Speewa and take the ferry across back into Victoria. The Speewa Ferry is one of only two cable ferries to cross the Murray River between New South Wales and Victoria. The ferry operates daily although times can vary on different days. Check with NSW Roads and Maritime Services for operating hours.
Murray Downs golf Work off some of those carbed-up kilojoules with a round of golf at one of Australia’s most spectacular courses. The Murray Downs Golf and Country Club is an award winning 18-hole championship golf course open every day of the year, and serving bistro and café meals every day. Tee off for a lazy nine holes or an invigorating 18, and grab a drink and light snack after your round. If golf isn’t your thing, Swan Hill is just 15 minutes away, and features the impressive Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery as well as the famous Pioneer Settlement, which is a favourite for kids.
Continue your journey If you’re keen to continue exploring River Country, take the Murray Meander Trail alongside the river southeast to Barham. If you follow the trail in reverse order and finish up in Moulamein, keep heading through the heart of the Riverina east on the Edward River Trail to Mathoura and Picnic Point.

Through the support of generous businesses and visitors, Altina has assisted in conservation efforts with many species within Australasia, as well as others animals on the boundary of extinction worldwide. Some of Altina’s successful achievements are with the programs involving maned wolves, African wild dogs, scimitar horned oryx, addax antelope, przewalski horses, hog deer and the southern white rhino. LOCKHART
A centre of bright, colourful art, and dogged country resilience, Lockhart is not your average regional town. It’s the urban centre of one of the most agriculturally fruitful regions in the nation. Cropping farmers, drovers and milkers visit the town for supplies, cotton sleeves coated with dust. Every second car on the street is a ute with a flat tray and a Kelpie tied to the back. It’s known as ‘the Verandah Town’ because of the classically designed buildings throughout. But this Riverina gem brings also something new to the table. It’s a bustling centre of the arts. Lockhart is well known for its October ‘Spirit of the Land’ festival, but art is on display in the town yearround. When wandering down the main street, you will find more than 400 images etched right into the pavement, depicting life in Lockhart. It’s a literal step back in to the past. A huge painted water tower is the central focus of town. The mural captures the stinging blue sky and unique landscape of Lockhart, alongside just some of the native animals that live in the area.
Its introduction has been a drawcard for many new tourists to the area already, and they’ve all been blown away by the sheer scale of the artwork. Also scattered around the town are some of the best sculptures Australia wide — 20 of them and counting. The Lockhart Sculpture and Heritage Trail has a strong focus on animals and rural life. A flock of emus with finely welded feathers peck for food in the CWA park. You can see some locals bursting out of their cars to go to the town dance on Urana St. The massive and detailed ‘Australian Rain Dragon’ — which won the 2012 National Farm Art Awards — is the highlight at the edge of Brookong St. A family dog, made of slick reddish metal, calls for attention on Green St. All this, and more, is just within the shallow boundaries of town. Before, during or after the sculpture trail, take time to relax and reflect in one of Lockhart’s many quaint roadside cafes or visit the Greens Gunyah Museum and Doris Golder Wool Art Gallery. Finley has never had a park in its main street before, UNTIL NOW. The Finley Foundry Park will be completed and opened this winter. The cozy park, flush with greenery, benches, places to play and rest, is due to open to the public on June 30. Huddled between two businesses, only two doors down from the iconic Finley Bakery & Patisserie in Murray St, the pocket park provides a place for community and visitors to come together. With the sun flooding in at just the right angle, the pocket park is an ideal location to catch a glimmer of winter warmth. When the winter turns wet, you can seek refuge under the spacious undercover area. Practical amenities like a water fountain and toilets will make sure you have plenty of energy
left to continue your exploration of Finley or your journey through the Southern Riverina. If you’re on your way through the town, stop to stretch the legs, and let the children let off some of that pent up energy in the state of the art mulched playground. There’s plenty of room to picnic after picking up a tasty treat at one of the nearby shops. Beautiful ornamental trees surround the perimeter, providing an element of privacy and shade. Packed full of history
VISIT BERRIGAN The town of Berrigan is living history. It might NOT be as large as neighbouring Tocumwal and Finley, but it packs a powerful punch of atmospheric history that belies it’s small size. The Berrigan Post Office opened in 1884, and is still used today. And many of the friendly faces you may see around town could be descendants of the first settlers. The roads which carry passengers to Jerilderie and Albury follow the same dusty tracks which carried stockmen and carriages through early colonial Australia. The Berrigan Heritage walk is best way to immerse yourself in the rich and ever-present history of the town. It takes sightseers on a walking journey through 20 of Berrigan’s most historical locations.
You could complete the whole walk and spend hours investigating the intricacies of early Berrigan life, or just take a leisurely quick stroll. On your journey, you can imagine townsfolk dancing jigs along the soft Jarrah wood floorboards, drinking a pint after a rough day on the road, and perusing a shop alongside the ghosts of the past.
originally a bank, it still boasts the old safe and is more than 120 years old.
“You can go into the churches— the Anglican church in particular has beautiful stained glass windows.”
“The Soldier’s Memorial Hall is another. One half was built in 1902, the other 1927.
The walk is just the beginning of what Berrigan has to offer, with other historical elements scattered around town and fantastic leisure activities and businesses to explore.
“It’s got a Jarrah dancefloor that was very popular back in the old days. It’s got beautiful features.
Berrigan Heritage Society President, Marney Dalgliesh says there’s something for everyone along the pretty, informative walk.
“Our old banks and churches are on the walk, and our fire brigade was the first started in New South Wales, so we have a plaque commerating that.
“There’s Museum

the Berrigan Heritage itself. Because it was

“It’s a unique and friendly town,” Mrs Dalgliesh said. Plaques will guide you on your historical journey through Berrigan or you can collect the pamphlet guide from the verandah of the Berrigan Heritage Museum, at 60 Jerilderie St, Berrigan.

The best local knowledge and suggestions for when you visit the Southern Riverina What’s On Winter 2021 36
New WAAAF Creek Walk
Tocumwal is a bustling tourist town, with the Mighty Murray flowing through the centre. It’s also a historic goldmine. It was the host of one of the world’s largest Royal Australian Air Force airbases during World War II, training fighter pilots and launching huge bombers from their hangars. Less well known is the legacy of the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force, which was formed in 1941 after substantial lobbying from women wishing to help war efforts. WAAAF members were also stationed in Tocumwal during the war, but their efforts and sacrifices sometimes go unnoticed in the history books. Tocumwal is changing all that.
The highlight of the walk is a two-dimensional trailhead sculpture depicting WAAAF servicewomen guiding a plane in the sky. As you make your way along the walk you’ll read firsthand accounts from WAAAF members and see images of servicewomen elbow deep in plane engines, and fixing intricate motors — you truly get an idea of what WAAAF servicewomen did to keep everything ticking along. The expertly designed panels and sculptures make learning a fascinating treat.
The recently constructed WAAAF Creek Walk commemorates the efforts of the women who laid down everything for their country when they were needed.
When you’ve finished your WAAAF Creek Walk, and explored the history of Australia’s first female military force, the town of Tocumwal will be ripe for exploring.
It’s a journey of interesting information, and intricate, eye catching artwork which takes a scenic trail to the Tocumwal Aerodrome, and is known for its koala sightings and beautiful flora and fauna.
If you want to keep dipping into the vast historical depths of Tocumwal, the visitor information centre not only provides rich accounts of the town’s past, but can point you in the right direction for more. What’s On Winter 2021 37

ROAD TRIPS & TOURING ROUTES The Timber Cutter’s Run
River Country Trails
The Timber Cutter’s Run is a unique touring route along ancient waterways and through ethereal forests... a touring route that reveals a story of an earthquake 60,000 years ago, the Cadell Fault, the Narrows (Barmah Choke), a 50km sand ridge, the redirection of the Murray River, and the creation of the Millawa-Barmah forests— the largest stand of River Red Gum in the world. The Timber Cutter’s Run is a touring route through the central Murray Catchment of the Murray-Darling Basin from Moama to Balranald visiting Barmah, Mathoura, Deniliquin, Moulamein, and Kyalite along the way.
With a variety of towns and attractions to visit throughout your journey we invite you to discover River Country’s history, heritage, sensational food and wine through a series of touring routes. Each trail can be completed as a standalone day trip or you can link each trail to explore all of River Country at your own pace. The trails include River Forest Trail, Edward River Trail, Wakool Murray Trail, Murray Meander River Trail and Perricoota Trail. Find out more @visitrivercountry.
The Kidman Way— Backtrack to the Outback This trail starts at Jerilderie and officially ends at the near-desolate town of Barringun on the NSW/ QLD border. After leaving Jerilderie (a keystone in the Ned Kelly story), the Kidman Way heads north through the productive farming town of Coleambally, past the largest solar farm in Australia and onto Darlington Point on the Murrumbidgee River; learn about the history of the punt and bridge.
Bird Trails of the Riverina Collectively The Rock Reserve, Galore Hill, Brookong State Forest, Mundawaddery Travelling Stock Reserve & Cemetery, Milbrulong School Forest, Tootool Wetlands and Pleasant Hills are recognised as Bird Trails of the Riverina.
Discover Murray River Heritage Trail The Murray River region was a frontier in the 1800s, a place of legendary tales including explorers, bushrangers, pioneers, inventors and experiences for you to discover. Find out more @ visitrivercountry.
Long Paddock Touring Route The Long Paddock is a unique touring route, which follows the 610 kilometres of the Cobb Highway (named after the famous coach company) from Echuca/Moama on the Victorian border, through the towns of Deniliquin, Hay and Wilcannia, leading to the outback towns of Bourke, Broken Hill and White Cliffs. Interpretive panels are located at significant sites along the Cobb Highway.
Long Paddock Sculpture Drive Trail The Long Paddock boasts 11 major public artworks along the route, reflecting the heart and soul of our small rural communities. The route also showcases a series of timber sculptures, designed to pay tribute to the significant economic and social contribution of the timber industry to the region.
The Backroads Trail Take a detour off the beaten track and discover the wonder of the Backroads Trail. Meet the locals, taste the home-grown produce, sample the boutique wines and explore our rich cultural, artistic and social heritage. The trail also highlights the close ties farmers have with their land and the innovative ways in which they are working to ensure its sustainability for future generations. The Backroads Trail is located in the rural area north of the Murray River between Barham, Moama, Mathoura and Deniliquin. It’s simple to navigate and offers a true farm gate experience!
