Mentoring helps lives turn around
“Being unemployed was really challenging,” Zavier said.
“Having a mentor helped me to gain the strength and courage I needed to make a change.”
Anty became the support that Zavier needed in her life.
“Zavier wanted a permanent residence, a place to call her own. We knew to achieve this, she had to get a job,” Anty said.
Anty started developing a pathway plan to help Zavier gain employment.
The plan included developing employability skills, such as interview techniques and confidence-boosting methods.
Anty encouraged Zavier to obtain her driver’s licence, and she arranged for Zavier to complete her White Card course, giving her the licence needed to carry out construction work.
“Zavier had the strength and determination. I just needed to mentor her in the right direction,” Anty said.
With Anty’s help, Zavier successfully landed a store worker role with a local employer.
Zavier’s transformation was remarkable, and she recently celebrated her six-month work milestone.
“Having a mentor was having someone I could look up to for guidance and support,” Zavier said.
“Anty taught me to never give up and always have hope. Believe in yourself and your dreams and even though it’s hard, you are stronger than you think.”
“It lights up my heart that I get to spend valuable time helping people see their worth and strength,” Anty said.

The largest education, training and employment expo is back in northern Victoria, and this year, they’re doing things a little differently.
Regarded as much for its connection of regional students and citizens to education and employment as for its showcasing of local businesses and trades, the spectacle that is Careers Day Out is here.
With more than 2200 registered attendees, event organisers said it’s looking to be their biggest Careers Day Out yet.
Case in point, more than 80 exhibitors have signed up to wow visitors at their stationed areas across Shepparton’s Wodonga TAFE, formerly known as DECA.
Previous Careers Day Out have been raging successes for the region and event co -ordinator Hannah Ryan is excited to exceed all expectations at this year’s expo on Wednesday, May 10 and Thursday, May 11.
“We’ve organised our curated ‘hubs’ and areas dedicated to certain types of careers and industries so students can explore the variety of job opportunities available,” Hannah said.
Hubs include:
• Health Hub Co sponsored by GV Health, University of Melbourne and Yarrawonga Health
• Arts and Creative Hub
• Think Tank
• Hospitality Hub
• Farming and Agriculture Hub
• Building, Construction, Warehouse and Logistics Hub
• GOTAFE Hair, Body and Beauty Hub
• Sports and Fitness Hub
Hannah said 27 schools region-wide were among those registered and she hoped the expo would spark interest and excitement for the students’ future pathways.
However, the day is not just for current students.
“From past students to parents looking to re-enter the workforce, career changers and those wanting to upskill, they’ll all have the opportunity to explore and interact with exhibitors and participate in career orientated activities,” Hannah said. Workshops, demos and talks will be featured by TAFEs, universities, industry associations, employers, employment and support agencies, and emergency services.
In addition to exploring prospective grinds, sponsors and suppliers have been encouraged to entertain the masses with interactive displays and activities.
This year’s sponsors include GOTAFE, Wodonga TAFE, GMLLEN, Greater Shepparton City Council, The
Apprenticeship Factory and GV Health to name a few.
Event-goers can fly a drone and see what activities the CAF Consulting team get up to, have a go at driving a forklift with Wodonga TAFE, or see if they’ve got what it takes to be a Watters electrician using their interactive activity boards.
With options aplenty and diverse interests piqued, no two Careers Day Out will be the same.
All share one commonality, though kickstarting one’s career journey is only an expo away. Further information can be accessed via: www.careersdayout.com.au/

In her final year as a painting and decorating apprentice, Kilby Todd is making people sit up and take notice.
She’s already a two-time award winner of one of the best young tradespeople in her field.
The 20-year-old Bendigo TAFE student was recently honoured in Master Builders Victoria’s Regional Apprentice of the Year Awards, which comes on top of another win in Bendigo TAFE’s Industry Excellence Awards.
“I’ve always set high standards for myself. I love being a problem-solver and I have a real eye for detail,” Kilby said.
“Winning these awards is recognition of my skills and the passion that I bring to my work. It shows that women can create a bright future for themselves in trades.
“Studying the Certificate III in Painting and Decorating (CPC30620) at Bendigo TAFE has set me up for success.
“Shane Kennedy, our painting and decorating teacher, is amazing. He’s taught us so much, including technical skills like marbling, ceiling roses, and how to apply gold leaf.
“The way Shane teaches has shown our whole group how the little things can make such a difference to the quality of your work.
“We have top-class learning facilities at our Charleston Rd campus
and in our workshop we get to practice as if we’re working in a real house.
“One of the most important things I’ve learned is how to communicate better with the people you work with and with clients.
“And also time management — how to plan and be organised. These things are more than just useful in your job, they’re great life skills to have.”
The world is now at Kilby’s feet. She hopes one day to take the skills that she has learnt to live and work in other countries.
“I wanted to study a qualification that was portable, something where I could travel and keep using my trade. I’d love to live in America or Europe while continuing to work in this industry,” Kilby said.
“My parents always encouraged me to do a trade, and they were right. Dad was a carpenter and he said that it’s great to have skills and knowledge.
They can take you anywhere!”

Yong Deng is a second-year medical student who completed his first year of the Doctor of Medicine (Rural Pathway) degree at the University of Melbourne Shepparton campus.
The Doctor of Medicine (Rural Pathway), is for students from a rural background who are committed to undertaking their medical education wholly in a rural setting and becoming a part of rural and regional Australia’s medical workforce.
Before moving to Shepparton, Yong worked in Melbourne as a pharmacist.
However, it was Yong’s experiences as a child which led him to study medicine.
Yong spent several years in a Kenyan refugee camp before moving to Australia. He saw first-hand the effects of living in a developing nation and the inadequate access to medical care.
From his lived experience, Yong feels it’s his duty of care to deliver quality healthcare in areas of need across the globe including rural and remote Australia. Thanks to the Doctor of Medicine (Rural Pathway) program,
he is on his way to becoming a rural doctor.
Yong said some of the highlights of the program so far had been, “Meeting so many incredible people and getting to explore Shepparton. I got to enjoy dinners with new friends and
–go bowling with local doctors, our lecturers/clinical educators and the university staff.
“To top it all, the student Outlook Rural Health Club organised a
skiing trip — it’s still one of the most memorable experiences that I am super grateful for.
“I also enjoyed living in a beautiful and affordable accommodation through the University of Melbourne.
“The new MD teaching building is remarkable, although we
never took the advantage of the Sectra visual dissection table more than we did with the outdoor basketball court!” For more information, search: ‘Doctor of Medicine Rural Pathway’.

“We also identify our employees’ skill gaps or progression areas we can invest in and offer licences, degrees, diplomas and certificates.”
Greater Shepparton City Council people and development manager Karen Liversidge knows a thing or two about council’s dedication to its members’ growth and development. Over nine years ago, the car salesperson turned human resource employee began her new job as a team leader for workforces under the umbrella of council.
“I moved into the manager role six years ago. I try to describe it as I manage the employment life cycle from recruitment to exit … I’m the go to,” Karen said. Karen had one word to describe her experience at council: Opportunity.
She said the council differed from other organisations through its capacity to develop people, investing in skills and training in their chosen career.
“Due to skill shortage in certain career paths, particularly regionally, we try to focus on growth, starting with creating
As with majority of industries, presently, council has a lot of vacancies — project managers, kindergarten and childcare staff, environmental health officers, engineers, graphic designers, and many more.
Karen said the job market was limitless but cutting through the clutter could be daunting — a double-edged sword of the vast options at one’s disposal.
“My advice would be do your research, find a job that relates to something you’re passionate about and see what’s out there,” she said.
“Personally, I think council is a great place to work — it’s full of really supportive people who recognise and appreciate skill, talent and effort.
“We invest in people and are always thinking about how people represent our community, which makes us deliver a better service to them.”

Greater Shepparton City Council accommodates its employees’ work-life balance needs.
Gone are the days when once women enter motherhood, that’s it they are a mother.
Not worker, not athlete, or artist.
Just a mother.
It’s true that priorities and mentalities shift, as they did for Mel Parsons when she had her son.
“I wanted to get back to work after having a baby, but in a nine-to-five role and flexibility with my son being in daycare.” What job would be equip to check all these boxes?
Mel’s interests lead her into maternal and child health nursing a job that requires prior nursing and midwifery education, plus a Graduate Diploma in Maternal and Child Health.
After completing training last year, Christmas came early when Mel was hired by Greater Shepparton City Council.
“There are several centres in the Greater Shepparton community, all very family-friendly,” Mel said.
“My job’s not just weighing and measuring babies as some people would believe we look at growth and development, answer parenting and general medical questions and can advise people on best avenues of care.
“I love engaging with families, seeing them grow and develop, and following them through their parenting journey.” As we’re talking, a small voice calls Mel over.
Her son has been running around the backyard, patience wearing thin now as he beckons his mother’s attention again.
“I better get back to it,” she said. Mel’s a mother and more.
SEDA College uses sport and real life industry experience to engage students in their learning
What is SEDA?
SEDA College is a co-educational Independent Senior Secondary School for Years 11 and 12 that specialises in applied learning through individual learning and real-life industry experiences.
SEDA College partners with Australia’s leading sport, recreation, community, and trade organisations.
Such as AFL Victoria, Cricket Australia, Melbourne United and Netball Victoria. SEDA College graduates are wellrounded individuals with academic and industry experiences to support their future educational and employment pathways.
When and why was it started?
SEDA started in 2007 to fill a gap in the education system that was not engaging students in their learning. This is achieved by using sport and real-life industry experiences to educate and empower student centred learning.
Since that first class of 17 students and an initial partnership with Cricket Victoria, SEDA College transitioned to an independent secondary school in 2017 and has grown to 800 plus students across Victoria.
How does SEDA differ from traditional secondary school classes?
The SEDA model places student interest at the forefront of their senior secondary education, alongside a practical connection to industry.
Students at our school are able to gain a first-hand insight into what it is like to be a part of Australia’s leading organisations and sporting clubs.
Our ‘one teacher, one classroom’ model allows our teachers to take on a true mentoring approach, where they walk alongside and support the individual journey of our students as they complete their secondary education.
We know from our connection to industry the key personal qualities and transferable skills that employers are seeking.
We place as much importance on developing these skills as progressing theoretical and academic knowledge.
To maximise student learning and deliver industry-based experiences, classrooms are in local community settings such as sport, recreation, community and trade facilities.
What sort of students are attracted to SEDA?
The SEDA College students all share
a similar passion for sport and thrive in an applied hands-on learning environment.
A learning environment that connects classroom learning with elite industry experiences and opportunities.
Who is now partnering with SEDA, and how important is SEDA’s links with its industry partners?
SEDA College partners with major sporting organisations such as AFL Victoria, Cricket Australia, Melbourne United and Netball Victoria.
The program provides a direct link to industry opportunities in a hands-on learning environment all connected to the students’ interests.
The connection between education and industry facilitates authentic learning experiences and student opportunities. This combination enables our students to acquire the skills to support future educational and employment pathways.
How much time do students spend inside and outside the classroom?
In a typical week at SEDA College, students will be in the classroom
2.5 days a week, one day out in a community setting delivering sport clinics on behalf of industry partners and one day gaining industry experience in a structured workplace.

Greater Shepparton City Council allows its employees to dip their toes into its abundance of services.
Kids are chatting away like parrots, some are laughing, others are screaming, but all are music to Caitlyn Menzie’s ears.
After completing a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care during Year 12, the Greater Shepparton City Council gave Caitlyn the opportunity to work at all of its childcare centres in Greater Shepparton.
“I finished Year 12 ready for the world, putting resumés into many places before I was hired by council,” Caitlyn said.
“They have 18 incentives and you get a taste of each place.
“I studied for my diploma while working and got a full-time position
as an education leader at Arthur Dickmann’s Children Centre.”
Rising through the ranks to become second in charge kept the young manager in an organised chaos of responsibilities.
“Children don’t go to plan you have to go with the flow,” Caitlyn said.
As for her fellow educators, Caitlyn supports the 23 permanent staff in policies, practices and programming at Arthur Dickmann’s.
Caitlyn calls it coincidence she ended up in this career. After hearing how passionately she speaks about her job, I’d call it fate.
“I was the type of person at school that wasn’t sure what I wanted to do … I tried (childcare) and fell in love,” she said.
“If you’re thinking about a career in childcare and you’re the type of person that values connections with people, you’ll succeed.”

Having just finished 13 years of school, Bethany Gray was anxiously debating her next steps.
However, when La Trobe University’s Shepparton campus offered Associate Degree of Teacher Education for the first time, her decision became infinitely clearer.
Bethany, 19, is a first-year education student, studying at the Shepparton La Trobe campus with dreams of becoming a primary school teacher.
She is a born and bred Shepparton girl, and having this course offered in her own town has had its benefits.
“I’m really grateful to have opportunities here,” Bethany said. “I’m able to finance, stay at home and build up that post-uni life while studying where I grew up.”
She started her course this year and has already been welcomed by the university’s community.
“It has been brilliant so far,” she said. “It is definitely a tight-knit, smaller community feel.
“Everyone is there to help you, always up for a chat.”
She said the community’s support had uplifted her on her educational journey.
“It’s great because we are in such a community, you sort of feel like you’ve been given even more of an advantage being on a smaller campus.
“You have more access to people, it has a more one-on-one feel to learning.”
Bethany has loved her course and encourages people looking to further their education to look into La Trobe’s Shepparton campus.
“I would definitely recommend education courses at La Trobe as it is a great way to stay local,” she said.
“Being able to keep those connections to past primary schools and high schools gives you an insight into what a career as an educator in this region looks like.”
