HCP SERVICE SUPPORT COORDINATOR, CAROLYN MCDOWALL As a Community Interlink Home Care Package (HCP) Service Support Coordinator (SSC), Carolyn McDowall is responsible for setting up HCP consumers’ care and services. She helps schedule these bookings while ensuring that they align with the consumer’s schedule and is available to reschedule, cancel, or extend a consumer’s care and service appointments as needed. Carolyn works closely with the consumer’s HCP Case Manager and family members to ensure the consumer is getting the most out of their HCP. “Family members and the client’s

children can become overwhelmed, it can be draining, and people might be unsure on what decisions are best. “My role is to help them make those decisions and support them to allow the client to live a fulfilled and happy life,” she said. Carolyn said the move to Community Interlink is one she will never regret. “I was originally an Executive Assistant at GV Health, which is organisation on a different level but moved to Community Interlink because I wanted to help the community.

“I look at the clients and think ‘you could be someone’s mum or dad’ and somebody must look after them. “A lot of people are lonely because they have no one, so we fill that gap. “If someone is community minded I encourage them to look into the role of Service Support Coordinator, because it’s not only about serving the community but it’s personally rewarding,” she said.

GOTAFE empowers students to achieve GOTAFE has launched its “YOU’VE GOT THIS” campaign to let members of the community know they are supported to take the next step in changing their lives through education.

Current staff and students have been sharing their “YOU’VE GOT THIS” moments with each other over the past few weeks, with affirmation cards filled with encouraging messages being shared across campuses. Mature-age Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology (AUR31120) student Tracey Burge is one current student who has never regretted telling herself “YOU’VE GOT THIS”. Her advice to others considering study is “you can’t be afraid to try something different.” “I’ve got a lot of determination — I don’t throw the towel in very quickly,” she said. “If your heart is in it, and you’ve got grit and determination to succeed, then you should just follow your dreams.” She entered an apprenticeship after landing a job at the School of Armour in Puckapunyal.

“It was suggested that I ask to do an apprenticeship and that’s where it all started,” she said. “Completing bookwork at TAFE allows me to have a rest one week each month and be taught how things work together. “It is a good way to meet new people and I am looking forward to doing the hands-on work. “It’s weird being the only female apprentice in my course here at TAFE, but everyone is so respectful.” It hasn’t been easy and in spite of this, the achievements of community members like Tracey have been nothing short of inspiring. Many students have to overcome their own challenges and uncertainties to begin, then complete their studies. Whether you’re following your passion, chasing ambition, seeking security or career progression, GOTAFE’s industry experienced trainers and first-class facilities will support you.

Training consultant Talissa Crosby said Lyster Inc. McDonald’s provided many opportunities for their workers. “At all our Shepparton McDonald’s stores, we aim to provide more than just a job,” she said. “We are incredibly proud of our amazing store management teams, and seeing their hard work being recognised is incredibly rewarding.” Lyster Inc. McDonald’s restaurant managers were also recently given the opportunity to attend the Restaurant Manager Conference in Las Vegas earlier this year, and their shift and department managers got to attend the Future Leaders Conference in Melbourne at Crown as well. At the Future Leaders conference, some high-performing managers received an

Outstanding Future Leader award to recognise their knowledge and skills in achieving great results in the business. Among this year’s recipients was Thomas Pinchbeck, an assistant manager at Shepparton North McDonald’s. Thomas has been with the company for five years now and, at 21, has risen through the ranks. “I don’t see myself stopping enjoying being here for a long time,” he said. “The team here is more like a family than anything, with a mutual circle of respect and giving back to each other and the community. Over the past five years, he’s worked at almost all of the Lyster Inc. stores and enjoyed every second of it. “You get to work with your mates,” Thomas said. “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have been given at McDonald’s. Lyster Inc. McDonald’s covers all stores in Shepparton, as well as Wangaratta, Mooroopna, Swan Hill, Seymour, Cobram and Yarrawonga. Where success and support go hand in hand Matthew Calleri thrives in his role as a senior physiotherapist at GV Health. “My speciality area is musculoskeletal physiotherapy and I work in outpatients and in the emergency department, but also encompassed in that role is the development of junior staff,” he said. Matthew said he always dreamed of pursuing a career in the specialised field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy, which was made possible with the support of GV Health and a scholarship through GMCU. “I was given the opportunity to complete a postgraduate study of musculoskeletal physiotherapy whilst working at GV Health. “Over the last few years, I’ve completed that study part-time or while working and was given study leave days to help complete that work. Matthew said the financial support he received and the encouragement from his manager has allowed him to broaden his ability and grow in his career. “Musculoskeletal physiotherapy is a career

pathway I’ve always wanted to go down, and working in the outpatient and emergency department has increased my skill set. “Previously, I worked as a secondary contact physio, but with this qualification and eventual credentialing, I can now work as a primary contact physio in the emergency department, which is a role that requires a postgraduate study to achieve,” he said. Matthew said one of the unique aspects of his role is the ever-changing environment. “I am currently building my skill set and developing the advanced physiotherapy practice role in the emergency department. “This is an area that we previously haven’t worked in this capacity to a great extent, and it is an exciting opportunity to be able to offer best practice treatment for musculoskeletal patients presenting to ED. “I am excited to come to work every day, and I’ve stayed at GV Health because of the ongoing support that has been provided to further my career in the specialty area that I am passionate about.”

Inspiring excellence in rural healthcare For three years, Steph Simmonds has been a valuable part of the GV Health team. As an inpatient speech pathologist, Steph works closely with patients on the ward, helping them with eating, drinking, swallowing, and communication. Compared to working in a metro hospital, working at GV Health has allowed Steph to gain experience working in a wide variety of areas within the healthcare sector. “That was really appealing for me, particularly starting in my career as I wasn’t particularly sure what I wanted to do. “So having a role like this and working in a large rural hospital means that I get to do a little bit of everything and gain complex and specialised skills,” she said. Throughout her time at GV Health, Steph has been given the opportunity to attend

education workshops, supported by her managers, to further her skill set and elevate her career. “I have been fortunate enough to attend a variety of professional development events, which were supported through GV Health, my manager and the allied health manager, some of which were interstate, which was fantastic. “GV Health has been a really great place to learn and a fantastic place to start a career because you get see such a broad variety of patients which allows you to develop diverse skills, as well as the experience working within the multidisciplinary team. “We’re very fortunate that we have a supportive allied health team and great individuals to work with. “I’ve been very lucky to make great friends throughout my time at GV Health.”

Empowering Aboriginal youth Local Aboriginal organisation Ganbina is well known for its education services, but not as many people know about its employment and training services for Aboriginal youth. Yorta Yorta woman and Ganbina Employment and Training Program Project Officer Dayna Seymour wants to encourage Aboriginal youth to access the support available to them, which she benefited from as young Aboriginal person. “I was in Ganbina’s employment program in high school and it helped me get an after-school job at Target. “Ganbina also paid for my childcare course, which led to a five-year career in that industry. “After that I felt I was ready for a career change so I reached out to Ganbina again who were able to help me look for other positions,” she said. Dayna wants to remind Aboriginal youth Ganbina is a voluntary program, whose support extends beyond high school.

“I was with Ganbina’s employment program at 18 and then came back at 22,” she said. “I think it’s important to remind people Ganbina is a voluntary program and they can help you no matter where you’re at in your employment journey. “A lot of local Aboriginal participants need reminding that we offer our services until the age of 25, so we want local community to know our support is there post secondary school.” Key services Aboriginal youth aged 15 and over can access include help with resume writing, job applications, job interview skills and understanding your rights at work. Ganbina also offers one-on-one career mentoring, access to TAFE and university networks, scholarship information for training, funding support for uniforms, course fees

and other items relating to training and/or employment expenses. Dayna stresses it doesn’t matter where you’re at in your employment and training journey, Ganbina is here to help. “It doesn’t matter where you’re at in your employment and training journey. Whatever your current level of education is, or if you have limited experience in the workforce, Ganbina can support and work with you to achieve your goals,” she said. Aboriginal youth aged 15 to 25 who are interested in accessing Ganbina’s employment and training services, are encouraged to get in contact with Dayna directly. “The best way to find out what help we can offer you is by emailing me at dayna@ganbina.com.au or phone the Ganbina office on 5821 7333 and ask to speak to Dayna,” she said.

Rural medical students key to improving doctor shortage The second cohort of students to undertake the entire Doctor of Medicine (MD Rural Pathway) in a rural setting has commenced at the University of Melbourne’s Shepparton Campus. The degree is offered as part of Murray Darling Medical School Network and entry to the degree includes a collaboration between the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University to provide regional students an end-toend rural medical pathway specifically aimed at retaining medical graduates in regional Australia. All students entering the University of Melbourne Rural Pathway have previously lived for at least five years consecutively or 10 years cumulatively in a rural location. Head of the Department of Rural Health at the University of Melbourne Professor Julian Wright is delighted that the Rural Pathway program is in its second year, and said: “This program will change the rural medical workforce landscape as more students have the option to study medicine through

our end-to-end delivery of the MD curriculum in a regional setting. “This is a really important initiative that is benefiting both the students and the rural communities in which they will practice. It is great to witness the development of these students as they become terrific medical practitioners. “Importantly, we are seeing an increase in rural preference from our students, and we already have many University of Melbourne Rural Clinical School alumni working across regional Victoria,” Prof Wright said. Indian born twins Senita and Menita Jaji are both qualified pharmacists, but decided to make the move to medicine after experiencing the welcoming nature of rural Victorian life. “After having lived and worked in rural Victoria, both my sister and I have experienced the sense of belonging

to a community where you are valued,” Menita said. “There is the potential to forge strong relationships within the local community. “I believe rural medicine will be incredibly rewarding in the sense that I will be able to assist a community in their times of need and shortages and help people access good quality health care regardless of their location.” Senita echoes these sentiments, and said: “The Doctor of Medicine (Rural Pathway) offers a great opportunity to gain experience in a wide variety of cases and clinical settings. “My experience as a pharmacist in a rural/regional area, highlighted the inequalities that exist in relation to access to high quality healthcare services. “This is my opportunity to make a difference to this situation.”

Twins Menita and Senita Jaji are undertaking Doctor of Medicine (MD Rural Pathway) at University of Melbourne’s Shepparton Campus.
