I’m extremely passionate about the industry, which drove me to my career in vocational education and to train our future vet nurses. As a previous student of GOTAFE, I have always valued my trainers, and have always known training others would be an element of my career path. There are so many aspects and areas of veterinary science for everyone to find their niche and develop their education and skills. I have loved working with each student to find out their key interests of the industry and where their qualification will take them in future.

Revved up for success
Mark has been with GOTAFE for over 19 years and is excited by helping students excel in the automotive industry. One thing is clear though, and that is Mark’s passion for industry which he shares with many GOTAFE staff and students.
“Competing in WorldSkills has been quite a unique experience for me,” Hayley said.
MARK WARD
“It is an exciting time for the automotive industry,” he said. “I love watching the apprentices exceed over the years and helping our staff succeed.”
Tesla arrivals a jump-start for local industry
Following the arrival of two new Tesla vehicles, GOTAFE’s automotive workshops at Fryers Street and Docker Street campuses are now training the mechanics of tomorrow, with students learning to service and repair electric and hybrid vehicles (EVs).
Certificate III in Motorcycle Mechanical Technology (AUR30820) student Hayley Hopkins was among the 12 GOTAFE students who competed in the National WorldSkills Championships.
“It had a lot to do with proving my worth as a female in this trade.”
While working in a male-dominant industry and being the only female in her class has been challenging, GOTAFE has provided her with a study and work environment wherein the teachers are supportive, and classmates are always open to helping each other. “Connecting with other people that share the same passion as you is fantastic,” she said. “Everyone is happy to help out and you can build some really close friendships.”
“Local workshops are experiencing a large demand for electric vehicles. The biggest benefit of having access to electric vehicles is the support it will provide to our learners,” said Mark Ward, Automotive Coordinator.

BUSINESS, IT & EDUCATION Ready to upskill?
Emily Duke completed a Diploma of Leadership & Management (BSB50420) to improve how she could support and lead her team at GOTAFE. “Completing a Diploma of Leadership & Management allowed me to upskill, and improved my ability to lead my team,” she said.
“My trainers provided me with as much support as possible – they wanted to see me succeed.”
Brian Murphy was one of 12 managers from Mawsons Concrete and Quarries, which employs 550 people across 80 Victorian and NSW worksites, enrolled in GOTAFE’s Emerging Leaders training program. After the positive experience Brian had with Emerging Leaders, he decided to enrol in a Certificate IV in Leadership & Management (BSB40520) course at GOTAFE. “It was all about self-improvement in areas I felt were lacking,” he said.
“They really care about your learning journey and their passion for industry really shone through at the end of each class.”
“I was given the opportunity to complete the course and take on an extra challenge.”
Brian feels better equipped to navigate challenges in the workplace, and says he is a better manager to his six direct reports because of completing the course and GOTAFE’s Emerging Leaders program.
