BIG BOATS
AGAIN
Lake Mulwala has played host to some of the world’s fastest boats for annual boat racing events with the EC Griffith Cup becoming the signature attraction in recent decades. The event continues to grow in popularity alongside a carnival like atmosphere with the Yarrawonga Fair and this year an aerial display by current Red Bull Air Race World Champion is set to attract thousands of people over three days.

Big boats roar again
Reminiscent of the days the boat races were held on New Year’s Day, a huge crowd flocked to the foreshore last April for the successful 2022 EC Griffith Cup boat racing event and Yarrawonga Fair. For more than half a century boats of all shapes and sizes have roared around Lake Mulwala in an annual racing event which has attracted thousands of boating enthusiasts and some of the world’s fastest Grand Prix Hydroplanes. In recent decades, the event, which includes the coveted EC Griffith Cup, has been proudly held with the assistance of the fantastic partnership between the Victorian Speed Boat Club (VSBC), Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism and Business as well as major supporter Mulwala Water Ski Club.
Lake Mulwala will reverberate with the familiar rumble of the GP Hydroplanes for the popular EC Griffith Cup this April.
This April 21 - 23 there will be even more excitement and noise with the festival atmosphere to include a street parade of the boats with race teams, the Yarrawonga Fair on the lake foreshore, an action-packed aerial show, joy rides over Lake Mulwala with current Red Bull Air Race World Champion Matt Hall and daily solo display and daily formation flying with Emma McDonald.
Boats of all shapes and sizes have roared around Lake Mulwala since the 1960s.

Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism and Business (YMTB) Executive Officer Noel Wright said large crowds of people swarmed to both the Yarrawonga and Mulwala foreshores last April to watch the speed boat racing whilst also enjoying the atmosphere and hospitality on offer with the Yarrawonga Fair on the lawns at the Yarrawonga foreshore. “Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism & Business (YMTB) has again committed the host fee of $25,000 to attract the EC Griffith Cup to Lake Mulwala. YMTB will be running the Fair onshore to recoup some of the host fee,” Mr Wright said. “We are planning now for another big event and the economic benefits will hopefully come again as we expect our new additions to add significant visitor numbers to the already large crowds that flock to the Yarrawonga foreshore. “There will be a market, sideshow alley and thrill rides for kids of all ages, a selection of food vendors, a licenced bar for 18+ and some great static displays. “The three-day event will be free for all to enter. It should be a great opportunity for families all over the region to enjoy the festivities and watch some exciting boat racing on the vast foreshore. “New inclusion, the aerial show will bring in some new interest as Matt is the current Red Bull Air Race World Champion and a former Royal Australian Air Force top gun fighter pilot. “Matt has placed third in his world championship racing debut in 2009 and has since accumulated seven wins and 25 podiums, making him the most successful air racing pilot in the modern era.”
ABOUT THE EC GRIFFITH CUP The EC Griffith Cup gets its name from the trophy’s donor, Earnest Charles Griffith, who in 1910 presented a hand-beaten solid silver trophy for the Australasian Championship. Boats can be of any design to contest the cup, as long as they are inboard and powered by a single automotive engine.

The event is generally the domain of the Grand Prix Hydroplanes, the world’s fastest circuit race boats which roar across the water at surface speeds in excess of 280kms per hour. Lake Mulwala has a long proud history with power boat racing and in 2010 hosted the World Grand Prix Hydroplane Championships.

By resident golf fanatic Robert “Moose” Muir. Visitors from all over the country and even overseas visit our great region for its renowned golf courses. But for the benefit of those golfing enthusiasts who want more than a basic insight into our great courses we asked our resident journalist and golfing fanatic Robert ‘Moose’ Muir to come up with a few of the more challenging greens at some of our region’s best golf courses.

Our toughest golf greens By resident golf fanatic Robert “Moose” Muir. Many tough greens exist on Yarrawonga Mulwala and neighbouring golf courses and the Good Times has ascertained from course professionals what they believe are the toughest greens in the region. All these greens mentioned demand plenty of consideration by golfers, otherwise a three-putt – or worse – will be the result.
Corowa Golf Club-4th hole The East Course’s 4th hole, the 114-metre Par 3 has at least a 50-metre long green. Get well onto the green if the pin’s up the back!
Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club CourseLake Course 11th hole The Lake Course’s 11th, Par 4, 346 metre-long hole plays hard and fast even in the middle of winter. Without your authority, the ball can run off the green to the right or take up residence at the back.
Cobram Barooga Golf CourseOld Course 13th hole The Par 4, 13th Old Course is a beauty. The 325 metre-long hole has a smallish green with three tiers in different directions.
Black Bull Golf Course, Silverwoods Yarrawonga-Black Bull’s 3rd hole Before entering the Bull Ring, Black Bull’s 3rd hole, a 359 metre Par 4, has a tricky green, sloping from front to back with a lot of different undulations.
Come into Yarrawonga News and Gifts & say hello to our friendly team.

Whilst the sand scrapes at Rutherglen are all about the same size, if you land on the approximate 280-metre Par 4, 10th hole sandscrape the ball will continue its trip over the back creating a difficult shot back up.
Tocumwal Golf Course-The President’s 18th hole The President’s 18th hole, a Par 3, 152 metres from the blue tees, contains a tricky green of 40 metres long, sloping from back to front, as well as right to left straight towards the deep green side bunker. Any tee shot that is short of the green and to the left will leave the golfer with a difficult shot or putt to a back pin position.
Former Corowa golfer turned professional Marcus Fraser learnt his craft on the many golf courses in the region.
Putting onto the green and skirting the left edge of the bunker and that will pull any ball not aimed high enough off the green and possibly into the bunker.

Tantalise
YOUR TASTEBUDS IN RUTHERGLEN Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Rutherglen region is internationally famous for its deep complex reds and fortified wines. Dating back to the late 1850s, the history of the Rutherglen wine region begins with Lindsay Brown who planted his four-acre vineyard as the Gold Rush drew prospectors to the area. After emerging from the gold rush in the midnineteenth century, the region is now referred to as the liquid gold capital. The beautiful old winemaking houses which sprang up in the gold rush days are still owned and managed by fourth, fifth and sixth generation descendants. Today, there are over 20 wineries in the region, many offering exceptional cellar door experiences, picnics, barrel tastings and award-winning winery restaurants.

IT’S PRIME
Cod TIME
BY LOCAL FISHING GURU TONY BENNETT
Cod fishing is a fine art and in Autumn “the home of the Murray Cod” - Lake Mulwala provides a prime time to catch one. Options are aplenty for those fishing in Lake Mulwala, upstream in the Ovens and Murray Rivers above Bundalong and downstream in the Murray below Yarrawonga Mulwala. At the moment there is plenty of weed to work through and local fishing guru Tony Bennett provides some advice into fishing these conditions with various style lures and bait.

It’s Prime Cod Time By local fishing guru Tony Bennett With conditions nearing perfect as the summer sun eases, the next few months of March, April and May is the prime time to be hitting the home of the Murray Cod, Lake Mulwala. The lake was drained in 2022 to eliminate the weed but unfortunately this has not worked this time around. Sure, the weed has reduced a bit but nothing like what was hoped for. Once again, for those fishing Mulwala on a regular basis, it’s better to get yourself geared up to fish in and around the weed rather than trying to avoid it. In time the lake will be “chock-a-block” once again. With this comes a concentration of cod, some big ones at that. The most successful anglers’ fish either the faces of weed beds, over the top of the weed or in small pockets around timber. The following will delve a bit deeper into fishing these conditions with various style lures/bait and look at what else is hot in fishing tackle at the moment. Spinnerbaits - The majority of fishos that lure fish Mulwala on a regular basis will have a plethora of spinnerbaits at their disposal. The two most popular types of spinnerbaits are fitted with either Colorado or Willow blades. The Colorado blades (spoon shaped) give you more vibration whilst the Willow blades (Willow leaf shape) offer you more flash and also tend to run slightly deeper as they catch less water. Water clarity greatly effects the style you use. Clearer water = Willow blades, dirtier water =

Colorado blades. Weighs of spinnerbait vary from 1/4oz up to 3oz but if you are fishing around weed, it tends to be in the shallower margins ranging from 1 – 3 meters and a heavier offering is not needed.
various ways. Upon being hit by a fish they tend to collapse/crush and allow for the hook point to be exposed and thus the fish being hooked.
A nice gentle retrieve with the odd pause will see you in with a good chance. Retrieve your SB too fast and it will rise to the top of the water column quickly and out of the strike zone. Going the other way, too slow, will see your SB have no action and floundering around on the bottom. Casting along the face of visible weed beds or tight into timber structure will see you in with a good chance. Winding a SB slightly quicker across the top of weed beds is another good option. Hard Bodied Lures – The use of hard bodies is always popular but in and around weed they tend to foul up on a regular basis. With half a dozen hook points exposed, this is a common occurrence.
Cast tight into the weed allows anglers to search for that elusive Murray Cod whilst not being fouled up every cast. A very effective way to fish in and around the weed. Some of the more popular “weedless lures” at present are the Zerek Flat Shads. Swimbaits – Swimbaits have been the most popular trend in lure fishing bar nothing over the past few years. With them have come many great captures. With the majority of swimbaits being either slow
Instantly your lure will lose all action and become nothing more than a painted stick trailing through the water with weed hanging off the back of it. Do not discount them if you have clear pockets or faces of weed to fish but there do tend to be better options when in and around weed. Weedless Lures – Now these things make sense! With the boom in plastics fishing, along with it has come the progress in lure design to suit various fishing situations and this situation being weed.

surface, be it birds, ducks, moths, cicadas, mice, rats or even snakes and lizards. The anticipation of a smashing surface strike is second to none and can quickly bring a grown man to his knees!
Likewise, a chin weight can be added to them and they can be fished exceptionally well in the deeper water, especially by those who are using a “scope”, the latest piece of fishing technology. Swimbaits come in varying sizes and the ability to cast them is only limited by the weight of the rod you have. Sure, you can cast them off your standard rod but the use of a longer and more specific swimbait rod makes things much easier. Undoubtedly the Jackal range that includes the Chibitareal, Gantarel and Gigantarel have been the most popular by far. We here at Lake Mulwala Fish Camp & Ski are lucky enough to have our own two exclusive colours – the Baby Cod and Mulwala Magic that cover these three styles. The Baby Cod has proved to be a must have and vanishes as quick as it hits the shelves. Call instore to secure your own piece of fishing necessity. Surface Lures – Prior to the swimbait boom, surface lures were all the rage and continue to catch more than their share of fish. For those who haven’t “surface fished” before, this is done when water conditions are preferably flat. A lure with a paddling bib is cast and gently retrieved resembling anything that tends to be found on the water’s
Fished in, over and around weed beds or any fallen timber structure is a perfect place to start. Wakebaits are another similar lure that have a very shallow diving bib that imparts a wobbling action compared to a surface lure paddling action. Fish these the same way as your surface lure.

Bait Fishing – There’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to bait fishing, its more about where you put it! The traditional baits of bardi grubs, yabbies and worms still remain the preference for many but cheese and chicken have become the favourite for many over the last 10 years. It’s more important to have the correct rig set up and again that’s open to discussion. Personally, if I was to fish in and around weed beds, I would be using a Paternoster rig that has the sinker on the bottom and either one or two hook droppers up the line around 300mm apart. This allows the bait to be suspended of the bottom and more visible to fish.

Lowesdale and Daysdale Just 15 minutes north of Corowa, travelling along Federation Way, is Andrew Whitehead’s ‘Shearing the Rams’ sculpture outside the primary school in Lowesdale. This fascinating piece reflects the area’s proud connection to Tom Robert’s iconic painting. Whitehead invited the school kids to collect metal cogs and other pieces from their family farms to create this personal and universal tribute to Roberts. Another 15 minutes north is the small farming village of Daysdale. See the ‘Hardworking Horse’ sculpture situated in the picnic area across from the Exchange Hotel. Unveiled in 2021, the sculpture by Doug Munroe is made in honour of the late Len Hanrahan, a local farmer who lost his 40 year-long battle with cancer in 2020. Len’s motto, featured on the plaque, reads “Coming together as a community brings people together”. This sculpture, along with Jimmy Hewson’s ‘Man on the Pump’ in the same vicinity, give an artist’s impression of how Daysdale’s water used to be pumped in the late 19th century.
Urana There’s plenty more sculptures to see in the northern part of the Federation Council local government area. As you drive into Urana from the south, you’ll be greeted by the ‘Not So Itsy Spider’; a menacing giant metal redback perched 16 metres up the side of the Urana Water Tower. The piece is made by
Arachnophobes beware. The ‘Not So Itsy Spider’, located in Urana, is a favourite with young children legendary sculptor Andrew Whitehead. Towards the centre of town is the Stockman and his Mob right next to an iconic Annis and George Bills trough. The display features corrugated iron sheep, iron drovers, and a scrap metal horse- all part of a community art installation, where families around the area each paid $100 towards a sheep. Outside the Urana Tennis Courts you’ll find another Andrew Whitehead sculpture, the Urana Goanna. The piece is inspired by the bark drawings of Yolngu artist, David Malangi, illustrated on the first Australian one dollar note (1966).

Morundah and Boree Creek After Urana head over to Morundah to see the Toolbox and Jockey sculpture, commissioned to celebrate 100 years of bush racing. Made completely from scrap metal, this beautiful Andrew Whitehead sculpture was made in 14 different pieces that allowed for easier installation if indoor installation was required. The Swagman and Rusty sculpture is another must see commissioned by the Boree Creek Town Improvement Committee to celebrate the 2010 Boree Creek Centenary. The theme of the Whitehead sculpture was chosen to remember the passing of the travelling ‘swaggy’, which was once a common sight 50 years ago on country roads. At Boree Creek you will also find an incredible

Welcome to country Wagirra Trail and Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk The first stop along the Murray River is the Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk in Albury which features a series of stunning contemporary Aboriginal sculptures lining the Wagirra Trail from Kremur Street to Wonga Wetlands. Eleven sculptures created by local Aboriginal artists have been installed along the five kilometres of trail. Take a leisurely stroll or cycle the two-metre-wide shared pathway which meanders through the riverside parks (Noreuil, Australia, and Hovell Tree), past the Adventure Playspace at Oddies Creek, Albury Swim Centre, through Padman Park and west of Kremur Street (3.2km) to Wonga Wetlands. The last section of the trail, from Kremur Street to Wonga Wetlands is sealed. The Wagirra Trail also links to the Bungambrawatha Creek Trail, West Albury Trail, South Albury Trail and beyond to the Albury– Thurgoona Trail.

Marmungun Rock is at the beginning of the Bullawah Cultural Trail, with the word ‘Marmungun’ meaning ‘of this group/area’ – it is the closest traditional Bpangerang word for community. The featured hand prints are an enduring tribute to outstanding individuals in our community. To delve deeper into the Aboriginal stories along the trail scan your smartphone wherever you see a QR code to unlock some amazing short films.
Aboriginal Exhibitions Gallery at De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate Operating as a commercial art gallery housed within the Rutherglen cellar door complex, visitors to Rutherglen can enjoy free entry to curated exhibitions that are presented quarterly. The Aboriginal Exhibitions Gallery is a unique joint venture between the winery and Australian Aboriginal art collector, Hans Sip. De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate has unlimited access to the complete Hans Sip collection; one that consists of more than 700 paintings, prints, artefacts and sculptures.

Ovens Riverside Path and Bullawah Cultural Trail The Bullawah Cultural Trail project was created to celebrate and share the ancient stories, knowledge and skills of local Indigenous people. This self-guided family experience in Wangaratta snakes 2.4 kilometres along the Ovens River. In the Bpangerang language, Bullawah (bulla meaning two and wah meaning water) signifies the two suspension bridges crossing the river as well as the joining of the two rivers and the coming together of Indigenous and nonIndigenous people.
Works in the collection include paintings from significantly collected and highly recognised artists including: Trevor ‘Turbo’ Brown, Frederick William ‘Billy’ Doolan Jnr, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Craig Charles and Djambu ‘Sambo’ Barra Barra.
Boat Rock, Yarrawonga/ Mulwala Boat Rock was made by Bpangerang people who used the reservoir to catch and hold water for use over the summer period. The site is about 25 kms north from Mulwala and is very seldom visited. The exceptional quality of this site is that it is the only site in the whole of Australia that demonstrates that Aboriginals were able to construct a water storage from solid granite rock. Another amazing factor at this site, is that it takes very little rain to completely fill the water reservoir. The hole that was “dug, built or made” is in the perfect position to catch the entire run off of the granite outcrop into which it has

The Bpangerang Tribe were the original aboriginal inhabitants of the area, from Howlong to Berrigan, and are attributed with naming the twin towns. ‘Yarra’ means ‘water running over rocks’, and ‘wonga’ was named after the ‘wonga pigeon’ which were abundant in the region at the time. ‘Mulwala’ means ‘big lagoon’ or ‘big back water’.

Mount Pilot was used by a number of clans as a waypoint on a migratory path and as a spiritual and ceremonial site. The Yeddonba site boasts many significant areas including a rock shelter and bush tucker area. The site is of particular archaeological importance as it features an Aboriginal red-ochre painting, which is believed to be of a Tasmanian Tiger (thylacine), supporting the belief that the animal once inhabited the mainland. The thylacine, along with the goanna and snake, were the spirit animals of the local clans with the site serving as an important ritual location for the clan leaders. A well laid-out circular walking track will take you by these significant sites, with information boards along the way to help narrate your journey. This walk can easily be completed in an hour.
The Big Tree is a Meeting Place and is considered culturally significant with Traditional Indigenous owners. The age of the tree is estimated to be between 500 years and 1000 years. This area has great cultural and historical significance for the local Wamba Wamba people, who have hunted, fished, cooked, camped, and held ceremonial gatherings in this area for hundreds of years.

Jimmy has painted a wayward fishing hook into this picture as a reference back to the past. Picola was nicknamed ‘The Hook’ in the early days of the railways coming to town because it was ‘on the end of the line’. See if you can find it.
This was the first silo to be painted in North East Victoria. Sobrane, who is the first Australian female silo artist, used 60lts of paint and 142 spray cans. The entire project took just 8 days.
Look hard on the first silo and you will find the face of artist Tim Bowtell driving the horses beside the load of wheat.
The Barking Owl is Milli (Millibar) from Healesville Sanctuary. The Clydesdales are Clem, Sam and Banjo, bred in Goorambat by the Trewin family.
Things to do
• If you’re travelling in a self-contained recreational vehicle (RV), you should stay at the creek side RV overnight parking site
It was decided early in the piece to go for a Military theme, telling a story about our service men and women who left the district to head off to WWI. With two days to go before opening (Anzac Day) we decided we wanted poppies painted on the silos, racing over to Shepparton to get paint. They were possibly still wet during the service.
