Lake Mulwala provides a great location for many kinds of recreation such as swimming, fishing, canoeing, jet skiing and water skiing but it also provides a fantastic backdrop for various types of cruising. Cruising around Lake Mulwala is a cherished past time for many locals who have their own boat (barby boat) but visitors also have many options these days to enjoy the lake and all its beauty.

While cruising you may also be able to stop at some of the hospitality venues dotted around the lake such as the Sebel Yarrawonga. For many locals cruising around Lake Mulwala on a warm summer’s evening is part of their every week. But it’s not just for the locals to enjoy, you too can take in the beauty of Lake Mulwala from a different perspective. Hiring a boat or hopping on a larger cruise boat allows you to take in much more of Lake Mulwala’s jaw-dropping beauty, magnificent milliondollar homes, picturesque parks and foreshore spaces, learn about the areas diverse history and experience the incredible birdlife. Many tough greens exist on Yarrawonga Mulwala and neighbouring golf courses and the Good Times has ascertained from course professionals what they believe are the toughest greens in the region. All these greens mentioned demand plenty of consideration by golfers, otherwise a three-putt – or worse – will be the result.

Corowa Golf Club-4th hole The East Course’s 4th hole, the 114-metre Par 3 has at least a 50-metre long green. Get well onto the green if the pin’s up the back!

Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club CourseLake Course 11th hole The Lake Course’s 11th, Par 4, 346 metre-long hole plays hard and fast even in the middle of winter. Without your authority, the ball can run off the green to the right or take up residence at the back.

Black Bull Golf Course, Silverwoods Yarrawonga-Black Bull’s 3rd hole

Cobram Barooga Golf CourseOld Course 13th hole

Before entering the Bull Ring, Black Bull’s 3rd hole, a 359 metre Par 4, has a tricky green, sloping from front to back with a lot of different undulations.

The Par 4, 13th Old Course is a beauty. The 325 metre-long hole has a smallish green with three tiers in different directions.

Tocumwal Golf Course-The President’s 18th hole The President’s 18th hole, a Par 3, 152 metres from the blue tees, contains a tricky green of 40 metres long, sloping from back to front, as well as right to left straight towards the deep green side bunker. Any tee shot that is short of the green and to the left will leave the golfer with a difficult shot or putt to a back pin position.

Putting onto the green and skirting the left edge of the bunker and that will pull any ball not aimed high enough off the green and possibly into the bunker.

Lookout at our wonderful region Lookouts are a great way to see a large amount of our local scenic areas, with Mount Buffalo in particular, a terrific place to visit especially for photography lovers. With many mountainous terranes in our region and untouched land for miles, you will not be disappointed in spending time visiting beautiful lookouts. Here are several lookouts in the region we suggest exploring but do some research into the viewpoints in our greater region before your next daytrip adventure and you are sure to find a plenty. • Powers Lookout Three kilometres off the beaten track from the Mansfield – Whitfield Road in the King Valley, you will find yourself overlooking the beautiful King Valley. • Paradise Falls This stunning lookout is nestled deep in the King Valley, located in the Alpine National Park. • The Gorge and Mount Buffalo Chalet The Gorge is the place to visit for stunning views at Mount Buffalo and the Ovens Valley. • The Horn Located at the highest point in the Mount Buffalo National Park (1723m) and with the beautiful mountains of the Great Dividing Range stretching into the distance, the Horn is the perfect place to enjoy a sunset or sunrise. • Kurrajong Gap Lookout – Lake Hume Bethanga Kurrajong Gap Lookout is a 25-minute drive from Albury and 29 minutes from Wodonga and is located between Bellbridge and Bethanga along the Kurrajong Gap Road. • Morgan’s Lookout Morgan’s Lookout on the Culcairn to Walbundrie Road is a beautiful white granite outcrop which was used as a vantage point for bushrangers in the 19th century.

The Wagner’s Store and residence was restored and painstakingly furnished so as to recreate its 19th-century appearance. The shop building is preeminent in NSW for its original shop fittings and furnishings and is stocked with authentic goods of the 19th century. The living area at the rear is also furnished in its original style. Within this amazing 16 room complex is another beautiful display gallery. You may also wish to take in the Jindera Heritage Walk around the 24 historic sites – stroll, read and imagine what was happening in Jindera over 100 years ago!

Burke Museum Beechworth Originally built as the Beechworth Athenaeum in 1857, the museum was named in honour of Robert O’Hara Burke, the famous explorer and former Beechworth Superintendent of Police. The award-winning museum boasts a fascinating and historically significant collection of more than 30,000 individual items, many dating back more than 150 years.

Yarrawonga-Mulwala Pioneer Museum The Pioneer Museum features one of the largest and most comprehensive exhibits of early pioneering days in Australia. From flying machines to wool presses, to bicycles, homewares and trinkets of yesteryear, there is something for everyone to enjoy. A highlight of the museum’s collection is a biplane built by local pioneer aviator Douglas Sloane in 1913. It is one of very few designs from the early period of aviation in Australia to have survived to the present day.

The collection includes the significant R.E. Johns collection of Aboriginal weapons and tools, a large collection of 19th Century native animal and birdlife taxidermy, significant Gold Rush era artefacts, as well as a new section of the museum, the Ned Kelly Vault. The Ned Kelly collection is the most comprehensive of its type in regional Australia and includes the original death mask of Ned Kelly and numerous original items relating to the bushranger and his gang.

With beautiful Spring weather upon us, a short drive to have a picnic in our picturesque region is the best way to spend the day. From the mountains of Myrtleford and Bright to the beautiful lake of Yarrawonga Mulwala, there is many places for you to take a break and enjoy a spring afternoon picnic. Pack up the blanket, picnic basket, children and pets and visit a number of the beautiful parks and picnic areas in our region.

Bright is well known for its stunning spring colours, mountain views and overall picturesque location.

Yackandandah Sir Isaac Isaacs Park is a beautiful little park on the edge of Yackandandah with a playground, a short walking track to skate park facilities, barbecue, picnic facilities, public toilets and rotunda.

With vast open spaces, there are several beautiful spots to take the family for a day trip and picnic. Along the Ovens River which runs alongside the town is the majestic Centenary Park which also has electric barbeques and a shelter. This is a safe and friendly park that also offers toilets, seating, swimming, fishing, shelters, and ample parking close to the town centre, so why wouldn’t you want to picnic here? Another area of Bright that is popular for picnicking is Apex Park which is located at Gavan St. With such beautiful views of the mountains there is no better place to enjoy a relaxing day. Just south of Bright is the beautiful quant town of Wandiligong. The stunning Alpine Park in Centenary Avenue, Wandiligong is set on the banks of the peaceful Morses Creek. With tables and chairs near the park and toilets located nearby at the oval, this is a lovely place to picnic. Slightly northwest of Bright is Porepunkah which has a family friendly picnic area in the Porepunkah Riverside Park. Situated by the river, the park offers BBQs, toilets, seating, swimming, fishing, shelters and ample parking close to the town centre of Porepunkah.

Just at the end of the main street is Yackandandah Soldiers Memorial Park which is a shady, cosy place to sit and picnic. With seating, a war memorial to provide you with some history and a rotunda, sit and relax before wandering the main street.

Harrietville Harrietville is a photography lovers dream with nature galore to photograph especially as the leaves change colour in the springtime. Situated tight at the foot of Mount Hotham and Mount Feathertop, during Spring Harrietville is ideal for a day trip to have a picnic or a weekend away. Take in the Alpine National Park which is the state’s largest and covers 646,000 hectares or wander down to Tavare Park which has everything needed to spend a fun family day out with play equipment for the kids, a BBQ to cook your lunch and a gazebo to seek shade. Make sure to pack your picnic basket and camera before you head off to Harrietville.

Spring is the best time to visit Myrtleford with beautiful scenery, tranquility, rivers and mountain views to enchant any visitor. Jaycees Park on Buffalo River Road, is a lovely spot to have a picnic, unwind and relax. There is also a great display of old agricultural machinery for you to view. Rotary Park which is situated at the junction of the Barwidgee and Happy Valley Creeks on the Great Alpine is a terrific picnic area which has electric BBQ’s and a shaded playground to keep the kids entertained. There are also shelters, seating and toilets so you don’t have to go too far. Right in the beautiful township of Myrtleford is Apex Park which is situated right on the banks of the river providing a lovely setting for a picnic or barbeque.

Beechworth is a picnicker’s paradise with the town centre and nearby parks and bushland very aesthetically scenic. Town Hall Gardens across from the old Beechworth Gaol is a great picnic spot with magnificent hundred year-old trees shading much of the park, a beautiful fountain and toilets available, this is a great place for a picnic away from the tourist crowds of Main Street. The Gorge Scenic Drive is also a unique spring picnic spot. Carefully make your way down to the smooth granite beds by the pools and falls of Spring Creek and be sure to pack your towel and swimmers along with your picnic hamper, as the mineral rich waters of the swimming pools are not just for photographing. Located in the Stanley State Forest eight kilometres south of Beechworth, the Murmungee Lookout is one of the region’s most spectacular spots for a picnic. With panoramic views of the flood plains of the Ovens and King Rivers and the breathtaking sight of Mount Buffalo, it’s well worth packing your hamper and taking the short drive to the lookout. Lake Sambell is a short stroll from the centre of Beechworth and is a picturesque recreation reserve and a popular venue for water and boating activities. Woolshed Falls which is a ten-minute drive north from Beechworth, is also where you can view the cascading falls, enjoy a leisurely picnic and is a tourist favourite.

Albury/Wodonga

One of Australia’s biggest inland cities, Albury Wodonga has several picturesque picnic spots with just a few mentioned below.

Noreuil Park is a favourite with locals and visitors alike. With a vast expanse of river frontage, the Riverdeck Café, children’s playground, BBQ, toilet facilities and wide-open spaces to run around, Noreuil is a relaxing area to have a picnic. Just a short distance from Noreuil is the secluded Browns Lagoon. Just out of the centre of town with lovely Spring flora and fauna walking and flying around, this secluded picnic area is great for a short picnic break. Wodonga also has the beautiful Sumsion gardens/ Belvoir Park. An easy walk around the beautiful lake in the heart of Wodonga, this area offers lush greenery, well maintained children’s play areas, a dog park and multiple rest areas to enjoy the peaceful serenity and wildlife that call the park home.

Corowa Bangerang Park which is located in the centre of town at the bottom of Sanger Street, has all the features of an all abilities play system surrounded by beautiful, grassed areas that are ideal for a picnic or lazing under the shade of the trees. The Corowa Lagoon is a scenic space to enjoy a family picnic on the lawn or tables provided whilst you

throw a line into the Murray River as you try to catch some dinner. Rowers Park also has a lush lawn area perfect for a long lunch as well as Ball Park Lagoon. Willows Reserve Wahgunyah, just a short drive from Corowa, also offers picnic tables, BBQ and public toilets on the banks of the Murray River where swimming is also likely to occur.

Yarrawonga/Mulwala

Lake Mulwala is the perfect picnic destination with kilometres of foreshore to sit and enjoy on both sides of the river and several cafes and eateries within short walking distance. The Yarrawonga Weir Park, just off the main road that connects Yarrawonga and Mulwala, is a great place to have a picnic and has great views of the Murray River, with Lake Mulwala not far off in the distance. A rotunda, shelter and toilet facilities make this a great place to set up for the afternoon. With beautiful views of Lake Mulwala, Chinaman’s Island Reserve is a great space to bring the family for a Spring picnic. On the Mulwala side, Purtle Park Adventure Playground has plenty of fun for children, and the children at

heart. Adjacent to the park is a rotunda with barbecue facilities so pack a picnic and relax under old gum trees while the children play or make use of the undercover facilities. Digger Loughnan Park is another quiet spot to sit, have lunch and relax in Mulwala with views of the lake in front while Mulwala’s main street passes you by behind.

Cobram/Barooga Thompson’s Beach in Cobram is a fabulous sandy beach which is a great place to have a picnic, swim or general rest-and-watch with an abundance of beautiful flora and fauna, interesting tree carving and iron works. Alongside Thompson’s Beach is also an excellent bushwalking track. Across the river in Barooga is also the Ski Beach picnic area in the Murray Valley Regional Park. The picnic area boasts a great river view with a sandy beach, and river red gum shade. It is only a short walk from both Cobram and Barooga and is wellequipped with barbecues and picnic tables.

Lastly King George Gardens which is situated in Ovens Street in the heart of the CBD, is lined with plane trees providing plenty of shade for a relaxing picnic as well as a playground and toilet facilities.

Barmah

The Barmah Lake Day Visitor Area is a secluded and a wonderful area for a picnic. The Barmah Lakes area is equipped with toilets, fireplaces and tables with the Barmah National Park home to the largest stand of River Red Gums in the world, meaning there is also plenty of shade to sit under for a picnic. Wangaratta has several charming picnic destinations, both in the centre of town and just a short drive away. Merriwa Park is one of the charming locations for a picnic as it is partially encircled by an ornamental lake and has several majestic redgums trees, scenic ponds and sweeping lawns.

The regions best hidden gems The northeast, although not swimming in a vast amount of waterfalls, has a number of spectacular sites for visitors and locals alike to explore. Start in Beechworth before making your way to Yackandandah then head over to Cheshunt and Warby Ovens National Park to view some of the breathtaking waterfalls our region has to offer.

The regions best hidden gems Baranduda Range Waterfall This waterfall which is located off Ewarts Road Yackandandah is a beautiful little waterfall that you can get right up close to. After rain particularly it is known to look spectacular and is around 20 metres from the road however it is not visible from it. In an amazing location and only a short walk from where you will park your car, make sure to bring decent shoes as it is a little slippery under foot and good shoes are needed to get to the top.

Woolshed Falls Woolshed Falls is a popular destination for visitors and locals to the region alike. A ten-minute drive north from Beechworth, you can view the cascading falls, enjoy a picnic or take a walk around the gold workings. There is also an observation deck which provides you full views of the falls as well as the valley below. There are also shallow rock pools that you can dip your feet into but be very careful on the rocks as they are slippery all year round.

No matter the time of year, Woolshed Falls is a gorgeous waterfall to visit in a beautiful location which is great for a family walk/exploration and rock scrambling whilst also taking several photos amongst the rocks.

Paradise Falls (pictured on page 33) This waterfall situated on Paradise Falls Road Cheshunt is absolutely stunning with many reviews preparing people to be amazed. The falls, although often only a trickle of water falling down except after heavy rainfalls, it is worth the drive just for the experience alone. The falls which come down from the cliff of a large wave like cave structure is a very peaceful and interesting place with lovely views and a nice hike to reach the main aspect.

Briens Gorge and Pine Gully Falls – Warby-Ovens National Park Both the Briens Gorge and Pine Gully Falls are situated in the Warby – Ovens National Park, located between the Victorian Alps and the Murray Valley. The surroundings of Briens Gorge are lovely with interesting rocks and the water is unique, mysterious and enchanting as no stream of water leads from the base as it goes underground. The Gorge is an easy place to get to. Although no water streaming, it can be seen running between the rocks.

Pine Gully Falls, a short distance away is a nice nature walk with great views and plenty of wildlife. Not a vast amount of water trickles along here however it does look spectacular with a deep gorge.

Mount Buffalo Mount Buffalo has a number of picturesque waterfalls that are part of the mountain’s most popular attractions. Crystal Brook Falls is one of the most well-known and visited as it falls around 200 metres from The Gorge rim and can be viewed from a section of the Gorge Heritage walking track. Ladies Bath Falls which is at the base

of Mount Buffalo is also a favourite location to cool off on a hot summer’s day with Eurobin Falls also following the track past the Ladies Bath pool. Eurobin Falls has viewing areas to see bother the lower and upper part of the falls. Approximately 10km up the Mount Buffalo Road on the right is the Rollason’s Falls track which is a beautiful walk down to the two waterfalls. At the bottom you will be able to admire or have a swim in the two deep and cool pools at the base of each waterfall. The last of the water areas is Dickson’s Falls which is located on the eastern side of Buffalo.

In the footsteps of Dreamtime Murray Valley Regional Park Collendina Located just outside of Corowa along Spring Drive, this trail will take you through the old River Red Gum trees beside the Murray River. The Corowa district was originally inhabited by the Bpangerang

people, and the river was not only a vital source of food and water but also a gathering place for trade, ceremonies, and storytelling. Canoes and rafts, as evidenced by the many Aboriginal Scar Trees along the walk, were used for transportation, allowing for interaction and the sharing of traditions along its length. The riverbanks are dotted with sites where Aboriginal communities once thrived. Be sure to call into the Corowa Federation Museum to learn more about the region’s region Aboriginal history including the region’s famed Aboriginal artist Tommy McCrae.

Wagirra Trail and Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk The first stop along the Murray River is the Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk in Albury which features a series of stunning contemporary Aboriginal sculptures lining the Wagirra Trail from Kremur Street to Wonga Wetlands. Eleven sculptures created by local Aboriginal artists have been installed along the five kilometres of trail.

Take a leisurely stroll or cycle the two-metre-wide shared pathway which meanders through the riverside parks (Noreuil, Australia, and Hovell Tree), past the Adventure Playspace at Oddies Creek, Albury Swim Centre, through Padman Park and west of Kremur Street (3.2km) to Wonga Wetlands. The last section of the trail, from Kremur Street to Wonga Wetlands is sealed.

In the footsteps of Dreamtime Aboriginal Exhibitions Gallery at De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate Operating as a commercial art gallery housed within the Rutherglen cellar door complex, visitors to Rutherglen can enjoy free entry to curated exhibitions that are presented quarterly. The Aboriginal Exhibitions Gallery is a unique joint venture between the winery and Australian Aboriginal art collector, Hans Sip. De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate has unlimited access to the complete Hans Sip collection; one that consists of more than 700 paintings, prints, artefacts and sculptures.

Marmungun Rock is at the beginning of the Bullawah Cultural Trail, with the word ‘Marmungun’ meaning ‘of this group/area’ – it is the closest traditional Bpangerang word for community. The featured hand prints are an enduring tribute to outstanding individuals in our community. The exceptional quality of this site is that it is the only site in the whole of Australia that demonstrates that Aboriginals were able to construct a water storage from solid granite rock. Another amazing factor at this site, is that it takes very little rain to completely fill the water reservoir. The hole that was “dug, built or made” is in the perfect position to catch the entire run off of the granite outcrop into which it has been made. A small shower of rain is sufficient to fill the hole with water, which is very necessary over the summer period.

The Aboriginal Exhibitions Gallery at De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate is one of the largest Aboriginal art galleries in Victoria and is regularly updated with new work.

The Pangerang Tribe were the original aboriginal inhabitants of the area, from Howlong to Berrigan, and are attributed with naming the twin towns. ‘Yarra’ means ‘water running over rocks’, and ‘wonga’ was named after the ‘wonga pigeon’ which were abundant in the region at the time. ‘Mulwala’ means ‘big lagoon’ or ‘big back water’.

Barmah State Forest / Heritage and Education Centre

Boat Rock was made by Pangerang people who used the reservoir to catch and hold water for use over the summer period. The site is about 25 kms north from Mulwala and is very seldom visited.

The Yeddonba site boasts many significant areas including a rock shelter and bush tucker area. The site is of particular archaeological importance as it features an Aboriginal red-ochre painting, which is believed to be of a Tasmanian Tiger (thylacine), supporting the belief that the animal once inhabited the mainland. The thylacine, along with

the goanna and snake, were the spirit animals of the local clans with the site serving as an important ritual location for the clan leaders. A well laid-out circular walking track will take you by these significant sites, with information boards along the way to help narrate your journey. This walk can easily be completed in an hour.

This newest silo artwork showcases a Wedge Tailed Eagle and indigenous figures camped along the Boosey Creek with a Scar Tree down the centre. The design also features local plants and rare wildflowers. The top right silo showcases the first passenger train engine that serviced Katamatite in its early settlement days. The bottom of both silos features a depiction of horses pulling a scoop to create irrigation channels, which played a crucial role in opening up the region to farming.
