YOUR WAY AROUND
By Emma Prior The north east Victorian region has some of the best walking and cycling tracks in Australia for those who love to spend their time in the great outdoors. Whether you like to take an easy stroll, are more of a runner; if you like the cruisey road rides or mountain biking is more your style, there is something for everyone in this region.

GOOD TIMES S SUMMER 2021-2022• 13
Cycle your way around our picturesque regions Rutherglen, Bright & Wangaratta. More recently the shared trail network has been extended from Wangaratta to Milawa, Bright and Wandiligong.
Popular Rail Trail Rides Porepunkah to Bright - 6km Myrtleford to Bright - 30km Beechworth to Bright - 41km Wangaratta to Bright - 83km Bright to Wandiligong - 10km return Bright to Germantown - 5km Harrietville to Stony Creek - 5km
Bright and surrounds Bright and Surrounds offer some of the most challenging and stunning road riding as well as mountain biking in Australia. And if you’re a keen walk/runner you can try to conquer some of the beautiful trails. Riders more primarily than walkers, come to conquer some of the biggest, longest and steepest mountain climbs in the country. Cyclists have several mountain summits to aim for including Mount Buffalo and Mount Hotham, which are generally tackled starting from Bright. For those who love a challenge take on the Mystic MTB Park which is renowned for its technically challenging trails through predominantly radiata pine plantation environment. There is also the Tombstone Loop which is 5.3km long or the hero loop which will take you 8.04km. Falls Creek is another challenge with Mount Beauty at the base as a popular departure point. For a longer challenge why not try the Big Hill
Mountain Bike Park which has over 40kms of topquality cross country and downhill trails suitable for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders. You can also take on the yellow loop, blue loop or red loop all around 10km long with a range of styles. The Omeo side of Falls Creek is ranked one of the hardest rides in the country. Omeo is also the starting point for the scenic ride up the back of Mount Hotham via Dinner Plain.
The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is the perfect way to discover the diverse countryside with its natural bushland, hidden valleys and some of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Australia. Not to mention the endless wine, beer, food and fresh produce you will find along the way. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels, for cyclists and walkers, and for all budgets, the trail provides over 100 kilometres of sealed trails and the perfect link between the culinary villages of Beechworth,
Albury Wodonga Albury Wodonga are also no stranger to beautiful cycle or walking trails with one of the most popular trails being the Wagirra Trail. This trail incorporates Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk, which extends from the Union Bridge in South Albury through to the picturesque Horseshoe Lagoon in West Albury. This trail also links with Wodonga’s network of pathways. The more adventurous can head to Nail Can Hill, to find many trails ideal for mountain biking and hiking. State and National mountain bike championship events are often held there, and riders rate the challenging courses as among the best in Australia.
North of the Murray Corowa Wetlands and Rail Trail is one of the popular trails to take on North of the Murray. Using some of the existing network of trails and roads, this is a fantastic trail for all the family. Take in part of Australia’s Federation History while also enjoying the array of native life and flora while travelling through the Corowa Wetlands. Lake Moodemere trail is also popular with a delightful river red gum forest trail which is shaded in Summer. Experience the splendour of Lake Moodemere and why not stop and enjoy a picnic on its banks on the way 14 • GOOD TIMES SUMMER 2021-2022
Yarrawonga – Burramine Cycle and Walking Trail This recently built cycle and walking trail from Yarrawonga to Burramine loops for around 40km in and out of the Murray River regional parks from the Murray Valley Highway. The trail features a sealed track along the Murray Valley Highway part, which is just a 13.4km to Burramine. Campers who are staying along the river will love the track to access Yarrawonga. Those that are riding out to Burramine can reward themselves with something to eat and a nice cold beverage with a visit to the Byramine Homestead and Brewery. The Homestead was built in 1842 by famous explorer Hamilton Hume for his sister-in-law Elizabeth and her nine children after her husband John was killed by bushrangers. The National Trust listed homestead was designed by an English architect for use in India and built on a beautiful site by a lagoon on low sand hills, forested in Pine.

Wangaratta Wangaratta is also a great cycling area with 80 cycle routes to explore. The most popular is the North East Victorian Grand Tour which is 311km but takes in a large part of the local region before looping back and ending in Wangaratta.
Murray River Trails The Murray River and its surrounding river tracks provide some great biking trails. Make the most of the Murray region’s flat terrain by getting around on your bike.
Venture off the beaten track and discover a world of towering red gums that protect the banks of the mighty Murray. Many tracks meander their way alongside the river. The Yarrawonga Regional Park has some great tracks which link up to Yarrawonga and the world heritage listed Barmah Forest also has some interesting trails. Cobram boasts a fantastic cycle track from Thompson’s Beach around Quinn Island and Horseshoe Lagoon. The 3.5km ride to Quick’s Beach Campground from Barooga is also a good one. The unsealed tracks were not purpose built for bikes but do make for a beautiful, picturesque ride following the shadows of the River Red Gums.

GOOD TIMES S SUMMER 2021-2022• 17
Life’s a beach on the Murray The areas around Tocumwal and Cobram Barooga feature some of the best beaches and are extremely popular with visitors year in year out. The river twists and turns around these beaches snaking its way through the thick Murray region’s state forests. There are numerous walking trails at many of the beaches weaving their way through the unique native bushland and wetlands.
Scott’s Beach Just a few kilometres to the south-east of Cobram is Scott’s Beach, which has a large and popular camping and day visitor’s area. On the way to Scott’s Beach down River Rd, stop off at the Quinn Island wetlands, a nesting area for waterbirds that’s accessed by a footbridge.
You will find access points to over 100 river beaches on both the NSW and Victorian side of the Murray River. Bush tracks (some are rougher than others) lead from the Murray Valley Highway, Goulburn Valley Highway and TocumwalBarooga-Mulwala Roads. Remember to check the current road and weather conditions, as some beaches may become inaccessible due to high water levels, or rain.
Here are some of the more popular beaches in the Central Murray region. Thompson’s Beach A few minutes’ drive from the centre of town, Thompson’s Beach is located in an idyllic setting and is a lovely spot to soak up the tranquillity of the Murray River and is close to Cobram and Barooga. The locals claim that Thompson’s Beach is the largest inland beach in the Southern Hemisphere and when you visit it you will see why. Shaded by the magnificent, towering river red gums and floodlit in the evenings, it is the perfect spot to relax or for a family gettogether. Enjoy a free electric BBQ’s, a playground area for children, swimming, walking, beach cricket, volleyball, canoeing and fishing. Spoil yourself and enjoy a close look of the river surrounds with a cruise on the unique Cobba Paddle Boat.
Tocumwal Town Beach Tocumwal Town Beach is located within walking distance to Tocumwal. Town Beach is another large beach and is popular with families and visitors with recreational boats. There is a campground adjacent the beach with camping available to caravans, motorhomes and tents.
Dead River Beach Dead River Beach has an extended beach backed by a green grassed level bank shaded by stands of immature River Red Gums. It continues around into an old horseshoe bend, which the river now bypasses (the land to the west, on the new south bank of the Murray, is in NSW). Surrounded by River Red Gum flood plain forest prolific bird life and some cattle grazing. Dead River Beach is just to the north-west of town along a track off Racecourse Road. Non flush toilets are provided. There are picnic areas to the north at Big Tom’s and Little Tom’s Beaches (access via Wondah Street).
Big Toms Beach Big Toms Beach has an expansive 300m beach and plenty of flat, grassed areas. The low entry into the water here makes launching a rubber dingy or canoe really easy. The campground is an easy 15-¬20-minute walk into town. Access for Big Toms and neighbouring Little Toms Beach is via Wondah Street. Follow the track further west along the river to reach Dead End Beach campground.

Forges No. 2 beach is popular with motorhome owners and those who fish. Two-wheel drive access is possible to Forges No. 1 beach. However, the access can become slippery after rain and has limited access during the wetter months. Forges No. 2 beach has good access most of the year but is closed regularly during periods of high water over winter. Non-flush toilets and shared picnic tables are provided at this basic bush campground.
Forges Beach No 1 and 2 Closer to Yarrawonga you will find the access to Forges No.1. This beach is one of the most popular sandy beaches on the Murray. Grassy banks make this an enjoyable place to visit. Forges Bend gets busy over summer and public holidays. At other times of the year you can have the entire beach to yourself.
You can enjoy access to many of the beautiful river beaches from the Victorian side of the Murray River. Many beaches are featured on free camping websites and apps. www. visitthemurray.com.au have compiled a list of the popular beaches reached from road around Cobram, Barooga and Tocumwal. OF THE MURRAY COD
By local fishing guru Tony Bennett December 1 has come and gone and with that came the opening to a new Cod season. Where else would you wish to be tempting the iconic Murray Cod than at “the home of the Murray Cod” - Lake Mulwala. As the new season has just opened, it’s time to get motivated and get out amongst them. The Murray Cod have been given a fair spell over the past 18 months thanks to “Covid” so hopefully they are up and about willing to play the game. Along with the mighty Murray Cod, anglers are also in with a chance of crossing paths with Golden Perch / Yellowbelly or European Carp.

Home of the Murray Cod
By local fishing guru Tony Bennett Soaking a bait under one of the many willows along the edge of the Murray is a great option. For those who choose to troll the deeper waters of the river, larger lures in the 90mm+ size with the ability to reach depths of 20ft / 6mtrs+ are preferred. Kuttafurra Mud Honeys, AC Invaders, the old faithful Stumpjumper in size No1 or a Gidgee Barcoo are good starting points. Searching some of the backwaters that come off both rivers upstream of Bundalong can be very rewarding this time of the year.
Bundalong and upstream in the Ovens and Murray Rivers produces some great cod. Options are plenty for those fishing in Lake Mulwala, upstream in the Ovens and Murray Rivers above Bundalong and downstream in the Murray River below Yarrawonga / Mulwala. To look at this closer I will break the lake and surrounding area into five different regions looking at tips, tricks and techniques for each area. The only problem you may encounter over this summer period is the everincreasing amount of weed taking over much of the shallower parts of the lake that range from 1-3 meters deep.
Bundalong and upstream in the Ovens and Murray Rivers
They tend to be much quieter with zero speed boat traffic and hold some quality Cod. Casting 1/2oz spinnerbaits, Mumblers or TN70 Jackall’s or the like are a great option. These backwaters tend to hold numbers of Golden Perch also.
Majors Creek area The Majors Creek area is a magnificent starting point for anybody wishing to explore the lake. The top end of the lake in the general vicinity of Majors Creek tends to be a lot shallower than the town end and averages between 3-6ft / 1-2mtrs. Once you get out of the Murray River that runs through the lake itself, be careful as you are into heavily timbered areas where seeing what you are about to hit is nearly impossible. The shallower margins are a favourite for those who choose to cast lures to the plethora of fallen timber that sits on the lakebed.
From slightly upstream in the everglades, back down to Drain Lane and the This area produces some great Cod this time of year, but for those fishing in the Taramia area, and across to the south side of the lake, any snag that has a bit of water covering it has the potential to hold a Cod or two. Murray itself, the plethora of oversized ski boats can be a pain in the backside. Again spinnerbaits, Mumblers and shallow running hard bodied lures are proven Getting out on daybreak or the last hour of daylight will see you in with your fish catchers in these areas. These areas that are slightly shallower also prove to best chance. be brilliant for surface fishing for those who like to get up extra early or stay out into the dark. Any surface lure or wake bait that has the ability to make some sort of surface commotion is in with a chance of being smashed.

If you haven’t done this style of fishing before, make sure you take a new pair of duds with you for when you get your first hit. I can guarantee you will have a slight moment and it may end with trouble! Kuttafurra Joe the Rat or Barambah Bidgeewongs are a personal favourite and have accounted for many Cod off the top. Unfortunately, much of the shallower water in this region consists of a lot of weed at present. Well placed casts tight into the timber are required. Many times you may only be fishing small clear pockets before encountering weed once again.
Hogan’s Rd and Woodlands areas As you venture down the lake getting closer to the twin towns of Yarrawonga / Mulwala, Hogan’s Rd has a large three lane boat ramp and is another ideal place to start your fishing adventure from. The water depth around the general vicinity of Hogan’s Rd / Woodlands averages around the 6ft - 10ft or 2 to 3.5 meters. There’s plenty of structure to cast at and trolling off the edge of the river is quite often very productive. The general area around Hogan’s Rd around to Woodlands, down to Ski Land and across to Kyffin’s Reserve gives anglers the best chance of getting away from the speed boats this time of year. Lure selection again is fairly The shallower areas in the upper areas of Lake simple - use something Mulwala are a favourite for those who choose to that will suit the depth of water you are fishing. If it’s cast lures.

For those not confident of bashing around out in the timber, trolling the open water around town is perfect.
Anglers must be aware the fully protected Trout Cod exists in this area and tends to form around 1 in every 3 captures. Certainly, do not discount trolling a lure around especially if fishing near the weir. Surprisingly the river is not very deep with 15ft / 5mtrs being about average.

There are at least half a dozen ramps spread throughout the twin towns, all being well maintained and easy to use. The water down “the town end” is deeper again with it averaging 10 25ft / 3.5 – 8 meters.

Boat Rock, Yarrawonga/ Mulwala Boat Rock was made by Bpangerang people who used the reservoir catch and hold water for use over the summer period. The site is about 25 kms north from Mulwala and is very seldom visited. The exceptional quality of this site is that it is the only site in the whole of Australia that demonstrates that Aboriginals were able to construct a water (Continued on page 37) storage from solid granite rock.

Boat Rock, Yarrawonga/ Mulwala.
Another amazing factor at this site, is that it takes very little rain to completely fill the water reservoir. The hole that was “dug, built or made” is in the perfect position to catch the entire run off of the granite outcrop into which it has been made. A small shower of rain is sufficient to fill the hole with water, which is very necessary over the summer period. The Bpangerang Tribe were the original aboriginal inhabitants of the area, from Howlong to Berrigan, and are attributed with naming the twin towns. ‘Yarra’ means ‘water running over rocks’, and ‘wonga’ was named after the ‘wonga pigeon’ which were abundant in the region at the time. ‘Mulwala’ means ‘big lagoon’ or ‘big back water’.
Wagirra Trail and Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk The Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk in Albury features a series of stunning contemporary Aboriginal sculptures lining the Wagirra Trail from Kremur Street to Wonga Wetlands.
